TheAnnualReportreflectstheBCBS-NCIHHSfocusonimprovingregionalhealthandwell-beingthroughathreeprongedapproach:research,outreach,andclinicalservices.TheIHHS,aspartofAppalachianStateUniversity’sCollegeofHealthSciences,mustholdtrainingandeducationofstudentsasparamounttoallactivities.TheIHHSaspirestomeetitsobjectivesbyconnectingfaculty,staffandstudentswithregionalpartnerstofulfillitsmissionandtrainfuturegenerationsofhealthandhumanserviceprofessionalsintheartandscienceofregionaltransformational.AsdefinedthisyearbytheIHHSTaskForce:

“ThemissionoftheBlueCrossandBlueShieldofNorthCarolinaInstituteforHealthandHumanServices,withintheBeaverCollegeofHealthSciences,istopromotemultidisciplinaryresearchopportunities,clinicalservices,communityoutreach,andtrainingprogramsrelatedtoholistichealthandwell-beingwiththeoverarchinggoalofimprovinglivesthroughtransformativesocial,environmental,andhealthcareadvances.”

Theremainderofthisreportisdividedintothreesectionsrepresentingeachareaoffocus:Research,Outreach,andClinicalServices.ItmustbeacknowledgedthatResearch,Outreach,andClinicalServicesareintertwinedandwillbecomemoreintertwinedastheIHHSrealizesitsobjectivesintheyearsahead.Thisdivisioninthisreportreflectstheneedtodefinefinancialdivisionsmorethangoal-orientedobjectives.TheIHHSTaskForcewillcontinuetoexaminethemethodologyofannualreportsasitcontinuestodefinethefutureoftheInstitute.

PurposeOneoftheprimarygoalsoftheIHHSistoincreaseitsresearchactivity,makingitthebackboneofthethreeprongedapproachofconnectingAppalachianStatetotheregionfortransformativechangeinhealthandwellbeing—theothertwobeingoutreachandclinicalservice.Criticaltoallresearcheffortsistheintegrationofstudentsinallaspects:grantwriting,conductingresearchandcollectingdata,andanalyzinganddisseminatingresults.ResearchcanprovideexternalfundstosupporttheotheractivitiesoftheIHHS,andexternalfundsgearedtowardstudenttraining,clinicalservices,oroutreachmay,andshould,createresearchopportunities.Thus,outreachandclinicalservicescanbeprovidedinanempiricallyresponsiblewayastocollect,analyze,anddisseminatedatatodemonstratetheeffectivenessofourmethods.FundingInthe2014-2105academicyear10externalgrantswereeithersubmittedforfundingormanagedthroughtheIHHS(seeTable).Threegrantsclosedoutandfournewgrantsweresubmittedandsubsequentlyfunded.Threegrantsweresubmittedandnotfunded.Dr.TandreaCarterreceivedtworelatedgrantsfromtheHIVPreventionTrialsNetwork.TheseclosedoutinNovemberof2015.Dr.KarenCaldwell’sgrantinvestigatingtaichichuanonanxietyandsleep,fundedbyNIH,closedoutinAugustof2015.Dr.GaryMcCulloughbroughtwithhimathreeyearNIHresearchgrantinvestigatingtreatmentofmuscletensiondysphoniawhichwillrunthroughnextyear.Theremainderoffundedgrantactivitiesweretraining-focusedgrantswithunderlyingresearchobjectives.1)Onegrant,initiallyfundedfortheNCSchoolHealthTrainingCenter,waspickedupbytheIHHSandcompletedwiththehelpofDr.GutschallinNutrition.Noadditionalworkonthisgrantwillbeconducted,norwilldatabecollectedorpublished.2)EighteenmonthsoffundingwasreceivedfromtheGoldenLeafFoundationtotrainstudentsindeliveryofruralhealthservices.Todothis,weareinvestigatingtheutilityoftelehealthtechnologyforimprovingstudentaccesstothesepopulations.ThisgrantwassubmittedwiththehelpoftheAreaAgencyonAgingandWakeForestBaptistMedicalCenter’sPhysicianAssistantsprogram.3)AthreeyeargrantwasawardedbytheSubstanceAbuseandMentalHealthServicesAdministration(SAMHSA)totrainstudentsinadministeringascreening,briefintervention,andreferralfortreatmentprotocolforsubstanceusedisorders.ThiswassubmittedwiththehelpofAnnetteWardandHeatherThorpe,socialworkfaculty,aswellasanumberofregionalpartnersfromWakeForest,theLazarusProject,andtheDepartmentofHealth.

TaskForceDirectionsTheIHHSTaskForcemetthreetimesinthe2014-2015academicyear,andmuchprogresswasmade.Anewmissionstatementwasformulated,andmembershavedirectedresearcheffortsoftheIHHStofocusoninterprofessionalprojectsaimedspecificallyatimprovinghealthandwell-beingofpeopleinourregion.ItwasdeterminedthatanyfacultyatAppalachiancouldsubmitgrantsthroughtheIHHSinkeepingwiththisfocusbutthatinterprofessionaleffortswouldreceivepriority,especiallythosewithfacultyinvolvementfromtheBCHS.Inaddition,itwasdecidedthatwewouldincentivizegrantsubmissionsthroughIHHSwithan8%returnonindirectcoststotheprincipalinvestigatorsforfurtheranceoftheirresearchefforts.StaffingWiththeacquisitionoftwonewexternalgrants,theIHHSwasabletofund75%salaryonaclinicalresearchcoordinator.CarolCook,whohasservedasanoutreachassistantinrecentyears,waschosenforthispositionandwillbeworkingpredominantlyoncompletingtheGoldenLeafprojectandtheSAMHSASBIRTprojectforthecomingyear.Inaddition,DeanWhittapprovedfundingtohireagrantwriterfortheIHHS.Dr.DanielProudiscompletingapost-doctoralresearchexperienceinArgentinaandwillbejoiningtheIHHSinJanuary.Withhishelp,theIHHSshouldbeabletogreatlyincreasethenumberofgrantsubmissionsinthecomingyears.Asheisstartinghalfwaythroughthe2015-2016academicyear,moreprogressisexpectedinthe2016-2017academicyear.SummaryInsummary,theIHHShasbeguntointensifyeffortstoincreaseitsresearchandtrainingfocus.WithtwonewexternalgrantsawardeddirectlytotheIHHS,thehiringofaclinicalresearchcoordinator,andthehiringofagrantwriter,thefuturelooksbrightforachievinginitialgoalssetbytheIHHStaskforce.Muchmoreisneededtomeettheoverarchingobjectiveoftransformationalchangeinregionalhealthandwell-being,butthe2014-2015yearhasbeenproductiveandtargetedinitsefforts.

CommunityOutreachSUMMARYIn2014-15,theBlueCrossandBlueShieldofNorthCarolinaInstituteforHealthandHumanServices(IHHS)DivisionofCommunityOutreachcontinuedtobeactivelyinvolvedincommunityprogrammingandcollaboration.LedbyIHHSAssociateDirectorMarySherylHorineasthesoleFTE,staffalsoincludedCarolCook,ProgramCoordinator(50%FTE)andJackieDyer,GirlsontheRunSiteCoordinator(50%temporaryemployee).Initsseventhyearofoperation,theDivisioncontinuedsixprojects;receivedfivelocalgrants;formedcollaborationswiththirteencommunityorganizations;sponsoredonecommunityforum;advisedonestudentclub;andrepresentedIHHSatfourhealthfairs/forums.Additionally,CarolCooktaughttwosectionsofFirstYearSeminartotheActiveLivingResidentialCommunity(ALRC).TheALRCfostersanenvironmentthatencouragesawell-roundedbalanceofmind,bodyandspiritinordertoachievepersonalandacademicsuccess.Divisionstaffattendednumeroustrainingstoenhanceprogrammaticdevelopment.Intotal,theDivisionsupervised10internsandrelieduponthesupportof562communityvolunteers(ASUandbroadercommunity).InordertounitetheUniversity’sresourceswithcommunityneedintheareasofhealthandhumanservices,thefollowingprojectswereundertakenduringFY14-15:1.CommunityResourceDirectory(CRD):Numerouscommunitypartnershavecommentedonthelackofacentralclearinghouseoflocalserviceprovidersandresourcesintheareasofhealthandhumanservices.TheDivisioncontinuedresearcharoundcommunityresourcesina3-countyareaandcompiledthemintoadatabaseusingMySQL.ThedatabasewasthenconvertedintoaformatthatfunctionswiththeDrupalcontentmanagementsystemthattheuniversityutilizes.Considerableeffortwasdevotedtothenever-endingtaskofverifyingandupdatingcontent.TwointernsweresharedwiththeASUParenttoParentNetworkintheCollegeofEducation.Eachinterncontributedapproximately80hourstoassistwithdatacleaningandupdates.TheCRDcurrentlylists378serviceproviderswithfulldescriptiveinformationincludingfeestructure,populationsserved,referralinformation,contactinformationandlinkstowebsites.Thedirectoryremainsfreetobothsearchandtopostcontenttoforhealthandhumanserviceprovidersinthehighcountry.2.GirlsontheRunoftheHighCountry(GOTR-HC):Beginningin2009,BCBSofNCIHHShasbeentheaffiliatesponsorfortheGirlsontheRunoftheHighCountry(GOTR-HC)council.MarySherylHorinecurrentlyservesastheCouncilDirectorandamemberoftheAdvisoryCommittee.Themissionoftheprojectistoeducateandpreparepre-teengirlsinthe3rd–8thgradeforalifetimeofself-respectandhealthyliving.Theinternationalorganizationwasfoundedin1996andcurrentlyhascouncilsin200+communitieswithover150,000participantsannually.Thecorecurriculumoftheprogramaddressesmanyaspectsofgirls’development-theirphysical,emotional,mentalandsocialwell-being.Lessonsprovidegirlswiththetoolstomakepositive

decisionsandtoavoidriskyadolescentbehaviors.AnadvisoryboardofHighCountryleaderssupportthecouncilaswellasformgovernanceandlegalstructureandtoadministerthecurriculum.InFY14-15,GOTR-HCofferedtwo12-weekprograms,oneeachduringthefallsemesterandspringsemester.Additionally,GOTR-HCpilotedasummercampprogramwhichisdescribedbelow.The12-weekprogramsconsistedof27differentteamsofgirlsat20siteswithatotalof330girlsparticipating.Coachingstaffconsistedof80volunteerstoworkwiththegirlstwodaysperweekforthedurationoftheprogram.Eachsitewasrequiredtohaveatleastoneheadcoachovertheageof18withCPRandFirstAidcertifications.Allcoacheshadvalidmultistatebackgroundcheckscompleted.The80coachesconsistedof27elementaryschoolteachers,23ASUstudents(including5academicyearinterns),26communitymembersand4faculty/staff.Twonew-coachtrainingswereheldin2014-2015.Eachtraininglasted5hoursandcoveredthebasicsofcurriculumdelivery.AcoachtrainingwasalsoheldforthetwosummerGOTR-HCinterns.ACPR/Firstaidtrainingwasheldinthefallafterthenew-coachtraining.Twocentrallylocatedmid-seasoncoachupdatemeetingswereheld.Eachsitereceivedaminimumofonesitevisittomonitorprogramadministrationanddeliveryandtotroubleshootanyissues.AstheculminationoftheGOTRcurriculum,participantstakepartina5krunwiththegoalofcompletingthe3.1miles.Thefall2014ZAPFitnessGOTR-HC5k,scheduledtotakeplaceatValleCrucisPark,hadtobecancelledbecauseofdeterioratingweatherconditions.Allregistrationsfortheeventweretransferredtothespring2015event.Thespring5kwasheldatanewvenueforGOTR-HC--theLowesRiverEdgeParkinWilkesboro,NC.Withapproximately250-300participantsand250runningbuddiesandanother200spectators,thiswasthelargestGOTR-HCeventtodate.Aplanningcommitteeof8volunteersassistedwiththecoordinationofthe5kevents.GOTR-HCpilotedasummerdaycampprogramovera2-weekperiodinJuly.Twointernsservedasthecoaches/counselorsforthecamp.Thesummercampwasabletoincorporateall24lessonsintheGOTRcurriculumincludingaday-longcommunityimpactproject.Thecampwasenhancedbyphysicalactivity,nutritionandcreativeblockstoroundouteach8hourcampday.HomebaseforthecampwastheAPPRHSPaulBroyhillWellnessCenterwheregirlsweredroppedoffandpickedup.Eachgirlwasinstructedtopackalunch,2snacksandawaterbottleforeachdayofcamp.Theregistrationfeeforeachcamperwas$300andnoscholarshipswererequested.CampactivitiesoutsideoftheGOTRcurriculumincluded1ranger-ledenvironmentalhikeand2otherhikes,instructioninultimateFrisbee,atriptotheHunter/JumperhorseshowattheBlowingRockEquestrianpreserve,basketballinstructionfromtheASUwomen’sbasketballteam,tennisinstruction,soccerinstruction,dailyswimming,atriptoWildcatLakeinBannerElk,atourofMenchieswithsampling,yogainstructionbyCatherineScantlin,ZumbainstructionbyGwenZhingandnutritionalcookingclasses.ThecommunityimpactprojectconsistedofashiftattheF.A.R.M.CaféfollowedbyasustainabilitytourofASUandatrashpick-upproject.Seventy-twopercentofGOTR-HCparticipantsin2014-15receivedscholarshipsupportinordertoregisterfortheprogram.Programfeesforparticipants,loweredfrompreviousyears,werebasedonaslidingscale.Girlswhoqualifiedforfree/reducedlunchpaida$25fee;girlswithextenuatingfinancial

circumstancespaid$75;andthefullprogramfeewas$100.Eightgirlsin2014-15paidnoprogramfees.AnimportantaspectofGOTR-HCistoadequatelyfundraisesothattheabilitytopayprogramfeesisnotabarriertoparticipation.Projects3and4belowsummarizeGOTR-HCfundraisingefforts.OtherspecialprojectswithinGOTR-HCin2014-15includeda)Organizationalstrategicplanning;b)Shoefunddevelopmentandc)Lunafest.a.WiththeassistanceofAriHarris,developmentofficerfortheASUCollegeofHealthSciences,theAdvisoryBoardcompletedastrategicplanningprocess.Afive-yearplanwasdevelopedthatincorporatedthefollowingfivemostimportantgoals:� Boarddevelopment� Programgrowth� Staffgrowth� Coachrecruitment� Incomeandsponsorshipenhancementb.Arecurringprogramneedisthatofadequatefootwearforprogramparticipants.Inpastyears,GOTR-HChasbeenabletopurchaseshoesforallprogramparticipants.Howeverbecauseofthelargenumberofparticipantsthisisnolongerfeasible.In2014-15welookedforacommunityretailpartnerthatcouldoffsetthecostoffull-pricedshoes.MastGeneralStoreofferedGOTR-HCparticipantsa50%discountonBrooksrunningshoes.Becausethetimingoftheofferwastowardstheendoftheseason,relativelyfewgirlswereabletotakeadvantageofthediscount.Otheropportunitiesforshoeprovisionprogramswillcontinuetoberesearched.c.LUNAFESTisanationallytouringfilmfestivaldedicatedtopromotingawarenessaboutwomen’sissues,highlightingwomenfilmmakers,andbringingwomentogetherintheircommunities.Forthethirdyear,GOTR-HChasteamedwithMastGeneralStoreandtheWomen’sFundoftheBlueRidgetobringthefestivaltotheHighCountry.AshowingofthefilmswasofferedoncampusintheGreenbriarTheateraswellasinthecommunityattheHarvestHouse.ProceedsofthefilmfestivalbenefittheBreastCancerFund,GirlsontheRunandtheWomen’sFundoftheBlueRidge.Attendancewasverylowatthisyear’sevents(~30people)andafterpayingthefeestorenttheHarvestHouse,theeventincurredadeficitof$200.Lucko’theLassie(LOL)istheprimaryfundraiserforGOTR-HC.AdvisoryteammeetingsfortheeventbeganinDecemberwhenfundraisinggoalswereset.TheeventwasheldonSt.Patrick’sDayandheldatTheInnatRaggedGardens/BestCellarrestaurant.Auniquetwistatthisyear’seventwasthehighlightingofauctioneerJesseMiller.FilmcrewsfromPBS(PublicBroadcastingServices)filmedtheeventandinterviewedGOTR-HCcoachesandboardmemberstobeincludedinadocumentaryfilmaboutJesseMillerandhisauctioneeringexpertise.Thisyear’seventhad65attendeesandraisedover$12,500throughtheliveauctionanddonations.TheLeighCooperWallaceMakingaDifferenceAwardwaspresentedtolongtimeGOTR-HCcoachJessePresnell.HighCountryTripleCrown(HCTC)isthepremieradultrunningraceseriesintheHighCountryandalsoGOTR-HC’ssecondlargestfundraiser.Organizedbyaplanningteamof7communitymembersandASUfaculty/staff,theeventsconsistedofTheCub(sevenmilerace),TheHighCountryHalfMarathonandTheKnob(2miles).Inaddition,TheBonkwasaddedthisyearasa2milerundownHoward’sKnobthatransimultaneouslywithTheKnob.Intotal,385peopleparticipatedintheserieswith40peoplevolunteeringattheevents.The2014-15HCTCcontributed$8,000toGOTR-HC.

GOTR-HCBudgetInformationINCOME2014-15Privateandcorporategifts/sponsorship: $3,000.00Grantsupport: $5,000.00(Women’sFundoftheHighCountry,HighCountryRecreation,MountainElectricCooperative)EarnedIncome: $8,340.00Lucko’theLassieEvent $12,500.00HighCountryTripleCrownEvents $8000.00TOTALIncome $36,840.00EXPENSES2014-15Personnel $9,785.00ProfessionalServices $2,345.00Office $71.00Travel $662.00SpecialEvent $472.00ProgramAdministration $7,273.00Licensing $2,345.005k $1,570.00TOTALExpenses $24,523.003.CrinklerootRetreat:InaresponsetotheAutismCommunityNeedsAssessmentconductedin2009,CrinklerootRetreatheldits5thAnnualRetreatforkidsages8-14withanautismdiagnosis.Thename“Crinkleroot”wasderivedfromahealingherbcalledcrinklerootthatgrowsintheBlueRidgeregionduringApril,whichisrecognizedasAutismAwarenessMonth.Crinkleroot2015wasledbyinternDeborahThomas,anundergraduatepsychologymajorwhohadbeenapreviousCrinklerootcounselor.Twenty-eightASUundergraduateandgraduatestudentsservedascounselorsforthecamp.Allcampershadaonetoonecamper/counselorratioandothercounselorsorganizedgroupactivities.HeatherHolt-Hill,DirectorofCampLakeyGapprovideda4-hourtrainingtovolunteerswhohadvaryinglevelsofexperienceworkingwithpeopleontheautismspectrum.ThecampweekendbeganonFridaynightwithadinnerforfaculty,students,campersandcampers’families.Duringthisevent,onetoonecounselorsmetwiththe8campersandparentstoreviewspecialneedsandbehaviormanagementplansforcampattendees.Thefollowingday,campersweredroppedoffatCampBroadstonewhereCrinklerootwasheld.Overthecourseofthenexttwodays,campersparticipatedintypicalcampactivitiessuchasfieldgames,artsandcrafts,campsongs,boardgames,hikes,acampfire,smores,etc.Thecampconcludedwithatalentshowandawardsgiventoeachcampertorecognizetheirachievementsandspecialcharacteristics.

4.CommunityHealthandMobilityPartnership(CHAMP):CHAMPisanASUandcommunitypartnershipdesignedtoimprovestrength,balanceandmobilityandtopreventfallsinolderadultsandpeoplewithdisabilities.Theprogramoffersamultidisciplinaryapproachwithateamofprovidersincludingphysicaltherapists,nurses,athletictrainers,physicianassistants,gerontologypractitionersandotheralliedhealthprofessionals.CHAMPworkstodecreasetheamountoffallsinthecountybytestingthepatientsandthen,ifnecessary,recommendingthemtoanappropriatehealthcareprovider.StudentsfromthevariousdisciplineslistedaboveengageCHAMPparticipantswhilereceivingoversightfrompracticingprofessionalsandASUfaculty.Followingathoroughassessment,follow-uprecommendationsaremadeforparticipantsinordertomaintaintheirbalanceandhealthastheyage.Followingeachscreening,studentsoftheWakeForestPAprogramconductfollow-upphonecallstoanswerquestionsfromparticipants.Priortoeachparticipant’snextscheduledappointment,heorshereceivesanotherphonecalltocheckinandtoconfirmtheappointment.AllresultsfromCHAMPscreeningsarefaxedtoeachparticipant’sprimaryhealthcareproviderwhenprovider’scontactinformationissupplied.AllCHAMPscreeningsarefreeofcharge.In2014-15,CHAMPconductedassessmentsmonthlyattheMcDowellCountySeniorCenterinMarionaswellastheWataugaSeniorCenterandAppalachianBrianEstatesinBoone,andattheQuestforLifecenterinCaldwellCounty.Serviceswereprovidedto277olderadults.Volunteerscontributedover196hourstotheprogramandconsistedof332students/faculty/stafffromnutrition,healthpromotion,athletictraining,physicaltherapy,physician’sassistants,gerontology,sociology,nursingandexercisescience.AnadvisoryteamforlocalCHAMPplanningwasputinplacethisyearwith8membersrepresentingvariousdisciplinesandorganizations.ThreepeoplefromtheadvisoryteaminitiatedanefforttoformastatewideSteeringCommitteeinordertoclarifytechniques,programevaluationandoutreach.TheSteeringCommitteewassuccessfullyformedandmetthreetimeswith20peopleinattendance.Accomplishmentsforthesteeringcommitteeincludedthefinalizationofamissionstatement,worktowardsastandardoperatingproceduresmanual,logoanddesignconceptualizationandcombinedschedulingforallCHAMPofferingsinthethreecounties.InFY15/16CHAMPwouldliketobeabletoexpandresearchinitiativesandpossibilities.Inordertomakeprogresstowardsthisgoal,IRBapprovalneedstobeinplace.After5meetingswithRobinTyndall,chairoftheIRBcommittee,approvalwasreceived.ConsentformstoparticipateinCHAMPwereamendedandconfidentialityagreementsforprovidersweredevelopedinordertosafeguardparticipantsandtoprotecttheirrightsandwelfareshouldfutureresearchtakeplace.TheCHAMPprogramwasawardeda$1000grantfromtheAdultServicesCoalitiontobeusedforequipmentpurchasesforCHAMP.AdditionalequipmentfundingwasreceivedfromtheThorpFacultyEngagedScholarFundsatUNCChapelHill.Fundswereusedtopurchaseahanddynamometer,scales,pulseox,pillowcovers,aportableexaminationtableandweights.MembersofthelocalsteeringcommitteeattendedaFreeYourFeettrainingwhichwillenablelocalCHAMPparticipantstobeeligibleforbalance-worthyshoesthatwillbesuppliedfreeofchargeduringtheFY15-16FY.5.ResourceLendingLibrary(RLL):TheDivisionofCommunityOutreachcontinuestomaketheResourceLendingLibraryavailabletocommunitymembersforthepurposeofincreasingaccesstophysicalactivity.ItemsintheRLLweresharedwith6differentorganizationsandutilizedby525peopleofvaryingages.Summerinterns

assistedintheinventoryprocessandorganizationoftheRLL.Asequipmenthasbecomeoutdatedorbroken,therewillbeaneedinFY15-16toreplacenumerousitemsinthelibrary.6.ProjectEMMA(EatBetter,MoveMore,AgeWell):ProjectEMMAwasstartedin2011inconjunctionwiththeBuncombeCountyCouncilonAging.Acommunityhealthassessmentintheseniorpopulationidentifiedvarioushealthrelatedissuessuchasarthritis,highbloodpressure,difficultywalking,diabetes,depressionandlackofadequatenutrition.ProjectEMMAwasstartedinanattempttoimprovehealthoutcomesthroughincreasingaccesstofruits/vegetablesandphysicalactivityinolderadults.IntheHighCountryProjectEMMAisofferedattheLoisE.HarrillSeniorCenterandismaintainedthroughtheDivisionincollaborationwiththeASUASDAClub.GoalsforFY14/15includedincreasingphysicalactivitythroughmoreopportunities,increasingaccesstofoodsgrownwithina100mileradiusofBoone,increasingconsumptionoffruitsandvegetablesandincreasingaccesstodifferenttypesoftherapies.Bi-monthlyprogramswereofferedattheseniorcenter.ProjectEMMAreliedonthefollowingASUstudentsasvolunteersfortheprogram:30ASDAstudents,8healthpromotionstudentsand2recreationmanagementstudents.

CommunicationSciencesandDisordershasbeenconductingitsannualreportonthecalendaryear.TokeepconsistentwithotherreportingatAppalachianandintheBCHS,theyaretransitioningtoacademicyearreporting.Thus,thisreportcontainsdatafromthe2014calendaryearandalsothefirsthalfof2015.Thenextreportwillfollowthe2015-2016cycle.TheCharlesE.andGenevaS.ScottScottishRiteCommunicationDisordersClinicservesastheclinicaltrainingcomponentoftheMasterofSciencePrograminSpeech-LanguagePathologyintheDepartmentofCommunicationSciencesandDisordersintheCollegeofHealthatAppalachianStateUniversity.TheClinicishousedinTheBlueCrossBlueShieldofNorthCarolinaInstituteforHealthandHumanServicesbutprovidesservicesclinicaleducatorsandstudentsatotherfacilities,includingWataugaOpportunities,variousschoolsintheregion,WataugaMedicalCenterandoutpatientrehabilitationcenter,BlowingRockRehabilitationCenter,CanonMemorialHospital,andFoothillsCorrectionalInstitution.Eachsemester,approximately30graduatestudentsareinvolvedinclinicaleducationthroughourclinicalprogram.In2014,theCSDClinicalprogramprovided723clientswithaudiologicevaluationsand2,737clientswithhearingscreenings.Fortysixnewclientswereevaluatedintheon-siteclinicand818clientswerescreenedforspeechandlanguagedisorders.Eightyoneclientswereseenintheclinicfortreatment.ThePreschoolLanguageClassroom(PLC)provided403hoursofservicesto31children.Inaddition,theCSDclinicaleducatorsandstudentsprovided15clientsatWataugaOpportunitieswithnearly230hoursoftreatment,739clientsatWataugaMedicalCenter,164clientsatourBlowingRockfacility,and476clientsatFoothillsCorrectionalInstitution.Inthefirsthalfof2015,theCSDClinicalprogramprovided388clientswithaudiologicevaluationsand1,273clientswithhearingscreenings.Fourteennewclientswereevaluatedintheon-siteclinicand117clientswerescreenedforspeechandlanguagedisorders.Fortysixclientswereseenintheclinicfortreatment.ThePreschoolLanguageClassroom(PLC)provided211hoursofservicesto21children.Inaddition,theCSDclinicaleducatorsandstudentsprovided10clientsatWataugaOpportunitieswithnearly132hoursoftreatment,369clientsatWataugaMedicalCenter,289clientsatourBlowingRockfacility,46clientsatCanonMemorial,59clientsattheWellnessCenter,and121clientsatFoothillsCorrectionalInstitution.Aphasiasupportgroupsandtherapygroupsfortraumaticbraininjurycontinuetoserveourcommunity.TheDepartmentofCommunicationSciencesandDisordersisaccreditedbytheCouncilonAcademicAccreditationoftheAmericanSpeech-Language-HearingAssociation.OurclinicalprogramsandfacilitiesinUniversityHallmeettherigorousstandardsoftheCouncil.TheMasterofScienceDegreeinSpeech-LanguagePathologyisaccreditedby
