In this month’s edition of Blue Horizons you’ll find a selection of incredible destinations to choose from including the Caribbean, Panama Canal, India, Europe, South America and much more, but hurry, this all-inclusive promotion must end 8pm 28th February 2015.

To find out more please see pages 6-11 and 38-41

South Africa has become a go-to destination for a growing number of cruise lines with Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth all regularly featuring on itineraries, as do various Zulu villages and townships dotted about the country, not to mention scenic drives through the stunning winelands.

The sky really is the limit in Africa. You can do things you never even thought of doing in your wildest dreams including visiting one of the most impressive seven natural wonders of the world - Victoria Falls.

This month we are delighted to offer readers a brand new 23 night voyage offering the ultimate African discovery. Enjoy two nights at a luxury hotel in Kenya before embarking on a 14 night voyage to Cape Town with ultra-luxury Silversea. Upon arrival enjoy a two night luxury hotel stay in Cape Town followed by three nights at Victoria Falls to witness the greatest curtain of falling water in the world. If you want to take your Africa exploration even further, you can extend your journey with a three night safari at Botswana’s Chobe National Park.

This incredible voyage offers so much to discover in one magnificent package - to find out more please see pages 4 & 5

Reader Offers Ltd Cruise Consultant, Simon Smith, was lucky enough to take a voyage with Regent Seven Seas Cruises® and shares his experience with Blue Horizons readers.

"Recently I was fortunate enough to cruise aboard Seven Seas Voyager® from Amsterdam to Bordeaux. This ultra-luxury all-inclusive ship boasts all suite, all balcony luxurious accommodation. Upon arrival we were greeted with a glass of champagne and directed to the Constellation Theatre for check-in. This process was very efficient. Afterwards, we were given access to the public areas including ‘La Veranda’ for some lunch before being advised our suites were ready.

The accommodation was impressive; light and well-designed. With 350 square feet there was plenty of storage space too. Space is in abundance with Regent, for a ship that holds just 700 guests – there were never queues for any of the facilities.

The food was exquisite, from signature surf and turf in ‘Prime 7’ to medium-rare lamb in ‘Signatures’ all at no additional charge in these speciality venues. ‘Compass Rose’ is the name of the main dining room, which has an open seating policy, where every taste is catered for. With all drinks included, wine by the glass is free flowing without having to worry about how much you are spending at dinner.

Another unique advantage of sailing with Regent is the inclusion of shore excursions. There are several choices in each port of call to provide a range of options to suit guests’ preferences. Considerable savings are noticeable in comparison to chargeable excursions with other lines.

Overall, there are few superlatives that accurately describe the quality of Regent Seven Seas; with attentive yet non-intrusive service, immaculate accommodation and food to tempt every palate, it’s easy to understand why they have one of the highest repeat passenger ratios at sea."

To experience a Regent Seven Seas cruise for yourself please see pages 31-33

Hello and welcome to the March edition of Blue Horizons.

In this edition, you’ll find an incredible selection of promotions, featuring prices and destinations you just won’t want to miss.

Celebrity Cruises’ ever-popular 123go! promotion is ending at the end of February and we have some great itineraries for you to choose from. Whether you’re looking for a European break (see pages 10 & 11) or crave somewhere further afield, we are

sure to have your dream holiday with incredible added benefits. Turn to pages 38 & 39 for our ultimate Canadian Rockies and Alaska discovery, incorporating the Calgary Stampede, or 40 & 41 to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

If, like me, you’re dreaming of sunnier climes, you’ll find two fantastic itineraries to some of the gems of the Caribbean - including Aruba, Dominica and St. Maarten. Join Britannia - the newest ship in the P&O Cruises fleet - as she embarks on her maiden season and enjoy your choice of added benefit: on board spend or car parking. Please see pages 24 & 25 for a slice of paradise.

For something different, we have two incredible tailor-made packages which offer once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Choose to witness the natural wonders of South America including the majestic Iguazú Falls (turn to pages 6 & 7) on board Celebrity Infinity. Or explore the vast landscapes of Africa, with ultra-luxury Silversea. With a spectacular Victoria Falls tour included - there’s even an option to extend your stay and go on safari. Please see pages 4 & 5 for more details.

We are proud to say we will be chartering the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express for the third consecutive year and now is your opportunity to revive the romance of travel. Please turn to pages 34 & 35, where you’ll find an unmissable journey from London to the heart of the Adriatic, including a complimentary 5H hotel stay in London, before you travel.

Following the success of our South Pacific packages with Celebrity Cruises, we’re excited to present readers with an incredible 25 night itinerary from Sydney to Honolulu with Royal Caribbean. With up to $500 on board spend, and a free Blue Mountains and Pearl Harbour tour included, see pages 20 & 21 for a holiday not to be missed.

Happy cruising!

Victoria Falls is known as the greatest curtain of falling water in the world. As the Falls thunder over a wide cliff, the Zambezi transforms from a placid river into a powerful series of gorges. Surrounded by rainforest, a path along the edge affords dramatic views of the Falls where visitors get a taste of its power as spray reaches those lucky enough to view its awe-inspiring beauty. In November 1855 Dr David Livingstone saw the spectacular Falls for the first time noting, “It has never been seen before by European eyes, but scenes so wonderful must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight.” It’s easy to see why Victoria Falls is one of the most impressive seven natural wonders of the world.

The diamond ring effect marks the beginning and end of totality as a bright flash of light and is one of the most amazing features of the eclipse. When the shadow of the moon covers the sun entirely, the sun’s atmosphere (corona) can been seen as a faint halo. This phase is known as totality. As the moon moves away from the sun, Baily’s Beads may be seen again before the sun fully emerges.

Experience Anthem of the SeasSM

TASTER CRUISEWe are delighted to present Blue Horizons readers with a fantastic opportunity to experience Anthem of the SeasSM during her maiden season.

Having been lucky enough to be one of the first people to experience firsthand the world’s smartest cruise ship, Quantum of the SeasSM, I now eagerly await the arrival of her sister ship Anthem of the SeasSM in Southampton next April.

Every feature was incredible, from the amazing iPad technology on check-in, meaning we were on the ship in minutes; to the Robotic bar and WOWbands that will open the door to your room, add drinks and on board purchases to your account and even reserve restaurant tables.

With Dynamic Dining you have no set dinner times and total flexibility to choose from 18 restaurants, five complimentary, in which to dine. From upscale to casual, you’ll have a fantastic choice.

Other stunning new features such as the North Star pod, sky diving simulator and the Two70 lounge with robo-screens are truly phenomenal innovations at sea and I certainly could not fail to be impressed.

Marketing Executive, Melanie Martin was recently lucky enough to attend the launch of Quantum of the SeasSM in Southampton.

Jane Archer is one of the UK’s leading cruise journalists and the Daily Telegraph Travel’s cruise expert. She has been sharing her experiences with Blue Horizons’ readers for nine years.

Jan e ARCHER

CRUISE EXPERT: JANE ARCHER

There are lots of exciting new features on this ship - the Limelight Club, where you eat, drink and get entertained all in one go, the 70 British ales, beers and ciders being served in Brodie’s and a seriously decadent afternoon tea created by master cake-maker Eric Lanlard priced from £15.

And then there is the Cookery Club. Now I am not a wizz when it comes to the kitchen - in fact Himself does all the cooking at home on the very sensible grounds that if he didn’t, chances are he would never eat! But I have happy memories of the Bistro, the James Martin restaurant on Ocean Village (remember the cruise line for people who don’t do cruises?). And who is the chef behind the Cookery Club? None other than JM himself.

Judging by the crowds watching his cookery demo at the Telegraph Cruise Show in January, this venue will be a winner, although of course he’ll only be taking classes (priced from £45)

now and then, as will other well-known chefs including Marco Pierre White and Atul Kochhar. Both already work with P&O Cruises and will also be cooking up their own treats for Britannia.

I dined at Benares, Atul’s restaurant in Berkeley Square in London, before Christmas and in January had lunch in Sindhu, an Indian eatery serving Atul’s dishes that was added to Aurora during a refit late last year, and the food was wonderful. Full of spicy flavour but not so hot your taste buds are screaming for mercy!

Sindhu will also be on Britannia, while a new deli dining outlet in the atrium, the Market Café, will be serving cold meats, British cheeses and Eric Lanlard’s cakes and pastries. What with these, and also the tasty meals served in the Glass House, the food and wine emporium fashioned by vino guru Olly Smith, who needs the traditional dining room? You know where you’ll find me!

Safari so goodOne of the places I tipped for the top in a Daily Telegraph article on where to cruise in 2015 is South Africa, because there are some great cruises there this year.

Hop on these and you’ll visit Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth, and experience Zulu history and culture. All very interesting, but so far so like most other cruises. No, what makes the South Africa cruises special is the chance to go on safari. Imagine. You’re on a ship one minute and spotting lions, tigers, elephants, giraffe and rhinos on game drives the next.

Oceania Cruises, Silversea and Regent Seven Seas Cruises have voyages around South Africa this year, while early in 2016, Reader Offers is offering an exclusive package based on a Silversea cruise from Mombasa to Cape Town but with time in each city at the start and end, and an optional three-night safari in Chobe National Park.

22 Blue Horizons | Your Cruise Miles Magazine

RULE BRITANNIAWe’ve heard so much about Britannia, the new P&O Cruises’ ship that you would be forgiven if you thought she had already launched. But hold onto your hats because she finally arrives in Southampton this month and will be christened in a gala ceremony on 10th March. At the time of writing, the godmother hadn’t been announced but the Queen is certainly a favourite.

Page 23: Blue horizons | March 2015

It’s not just ocean-going lines that are putting South Africa safari cruises on the map. APT has a cruise tour through South Africa that combines stays in Kruger and Amboseli National Parks with a mini cruise on the Chobe River though Botswana. I’m told you can see elephants and other big game on the river bank as you sail. Now that really is quite surreal.

The anniversary waltzThis is a year for anniversaries. One hundred years since the Gallipoli landings in World War One, 200 years since the Battle of Waterloo, 70 years

since VE Day at the end of World War Two, 40 years since the fall of Saigon, 25 years since the reunification of Germany, 20 years since Reader Offers was founded. The list goes on.

And the corks will also be popping for Cunard, Princess and Crystal, which have all reached milestone anniversaries this year.

Cunard is the biggie, celebrating 175 years of transatlantic crossings with a historic meeting of its three ships in Liverpool in May and a repeat of the company’s very first voyage, from Liverpool to Boston, on 4th July. Then it was on a small ship called Britannia;

this year it will be on Queen Mary 2.

A mere babe in comparison, Princess Cruises is 50 and toasting its golden anniversary with a craft beer, Seawitch West Coast IPA, that’s been specially brewed for the occasion and parties

Blue Horizons | Your Cruise Miles Magazine

Atrium, Britannia

23

themed after the US TV series the Love Boat, which was filmed on a Princess ship and ran from 1977 to 1987.

Crystal Cruises is celebrating 25 years at sea with a 12 night cruise from Lisbon to Dover featuring Nobu Matsuhisa, the chef behind the Sushi Bar and Silk Road Restaurant on its two ships. He’ll be hosting cooking demos, signing books and cooking up a $250 per person feast in Silk Road during the voyage.

Many happy returns to you all!

FOR AUTHENTIC CHILEAN CUISINE

Please see our natural wonders of South America voyage with Celebrity Cruises® on pages 6 & 7

THIS DISH IS A FLAVOUR-BOMB OF CITRUS, HERBS AND SPICE – THE PERFECT ALCHEMY FOR A COSY WINTER’S SUPPER. WITH ITS BUTTERY WARMTH AND SHARP-WHITE FILET, THIS FISH

HAS SWUM FROM HUMBLE SEAS, MIGRATING TO MICHELIN-STARRED RESTAURANTS.

Chilean-born bass is not a prerequisite – European is equally good;

the secret to this dish is all in its dressing, which is, of course, Chilean to

taste: garlic, olive oil, onion and chili. Lemon juice really complements

this fish, as does the pepper and butter. What are you waiting for?

Salud!

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: GRILLED CHILEAN SEA BASS

I N G R E D I E N T S

• 2 lbs sea bass

• 2 large garlic cloves, chopped

• 3 tbs butter

• 1½ tbs extra virgin olive oil

• 1 tbs flat leaf parsley, chopped

• ¼ tsp garlic powder

• ¼ tsp onion powder

• ¼ tsp of ground Merkén (Chilean chili pepper) or ¼ tsp paprika

• Lemon pepper and sea salt to taste

M E T H O D

1. Preheat grill on a high heat.

2. In a small bowl, mix the garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, lemon pepper and sea salt. Once combined, sprinkle this seasoning onto the sea bass.

3. In a small saucepan over a medium heat, melt the butter, chopped garlic and parsley. When the butter has melted remove from the heat and set aside.

4. Lightly oil the grate and grill the sea bass for 7 minutes, then turn and drizzle with butter. Cook for another 7 minutes, or until the sea bass flakes with a fork. Drizzle with olive oil before serving. Ideal with a salsa or your favourite steamed vegetables.

THE CALGARYSTAMPEDEEvery July, Calgary in Alberta, Canada, becomes ‘cowtown’ when the rodeo comes to town for ‘the greatest outdoor show on Earth’ - the Calgary Stampede. The spacious, modern city of Calgary sees time turned back to its frontier origins as it has for over 100 years. Sedate streets are bedecked with ‘Old timey’ facades and the usually-reserved metropolitan ambiance is replaced by the cacophony of enormous parades with their myriad f loats which dramatically evoke the wild days of yore. Meanwhile, the Stampede Park itself is a place of battle and bravery. To be among the crowds at the Calgary Stampede is not to be a spectator but actually part of a unique event; to be experienced, not watched, and what an experience it is.

THE ROCKYMOUNTAINEER - A TRULY UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCEThis award-winning and world-renowned train travels by daylight only through the Pacif ic Northwest and the iconic Canadian Rockies. The Chinese New Year is the most important annual celebration enjoyed by oriental communities all over the world, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t join in too!On the opening day evil spirits are driven away with firecrackers, fireworks, burning bamboo canes and as much riotous noise as can be joyously created. Each day, up to the arrival of the full moon 15 days later, sees a variety of ancient traditional and religious customs honoured. Finally the appearance of the full moon is celebrated with the Lantern Festival when all join together in the streets carrying a colourful array of lighted lanterns.Hong Kong is famed for entertaining the largest of the celebrations and the firework display, in the natural amphitheatre of the harbour, is an outrageous pageant of pyrotechnics and a three night stay at the beginning of this itinerary allows ample time to celebrate the year of the rooster.

ictoria and Iguazù Falls, are both located in the most incredible natural surroundings on two of the world’s greatest continents and the opportunity to visit both is available in this edition of Blue Horizons.

The landscape that the falls dominate has led to their very existence and will enchant you. After flowing across hard rock plateau, the impressive rivers abruptly cascade from one calm dimension into another; a deeper, more violent one amidst thunderous noise and an all-enveloping surrounding mist. With apologies to Niagara and other falls, in height and width Victoria and Iguazù have no rivals on Earth. Like Niagara, however, the rivers that feed them are so domineering that they have naturally formed impregnable barriers that, in recent times, have become international boundaries.

The Iguazù Falls tour from the enterprising itinerary of ‘The Natural Wonders of South America’ cruise on pages 6 & 7 ensures access from both the Argentinian and Brazilian sides spread over two days. Thus the falls may be enjoyed from different vistas, whilst also experiencing the cultural variations of these two great nations. At Iguazù the water plummets over an edge of the Parana Plateau, almost two miles in length. It crashes through up to 300 separate cascades and cataracts, then down on to ledges; its strength dependent on the volume, height and speed of the upper river. The largest of these natural chutes sees almost half of the river’s waters plunge into a narrow chasm evocatively named The Devil’s Throat – the convoluted, twisted precipice edge meaning that from within the gorge one may view the tantalising torrents from three sides at once!

Victoria Falls, on the boundary between Zambia and Zimbabwe, enjoys a local and historic description far more fitting than the name of the queen who “ruled Britannia” at the time of its discovery. What speaks more eloquently of their majesty, her Christian name Victoria or their local title, Mosi-oa-Tunya? Translated from the local tongue, I think “The Smoke that Thunders” shades that one. Unlike Iguazù, where the river passes through many conduits before falling, at Victoria Falls the Zambesi drops its full width of 1,700 metres over a single edge into the gorges below. The ferocity of the drop in flood season means the canyon beneath is shrouded in spray amid a crescendo of unbelievably explosive noise. With the rainy season lasting from November to April and the Zambesi’s flood season peaking between February and May ‘The Ultimate African Discovery’ cruise on pages 4 & 5 ensures that this February visit coincides with the Falls at their most powerfully magnificent.

On the surface, Guma Aguiar exemplified success: he’d married his childhood sweetheart, fathered four, and by 35 he was a philanthropic billionaire, having sold his business Leor Energy (co-owned with his uncle) for a whopping $2.55billion. But his seaside mansion had become a façade – his marriage was close to divorce, his business dealings in Israel brought pressure, and the sale of Leor had sparked a lawsuit with his uncle who wanted to “strip him of all his money.” Furthermore, Aguiar’s mother had involuntarily committed him to a mental hospital in 2010 for severe bipolar disorder and psychotic episodes; in fact, the day before his disappearance, a federal

judge had ordered his mental health records as part of his lawsuit.

On the evening of 19th June 2012, just before 7:30pm, locals witnessed Aguiar boarding T.T. Zion (a tender for his larger yacht the Zion) before driving out to sea at speeds of 16-31 MPH, apparently causing his boat to jump waves. 30 minutes later, he vanished.

Two theories immediately arose: accident and suicide.

The T.T. Zion was recovered from East Las Olas Boulevard’s beach at around 1:15am. Sea Tow Captain John See noticed the tie bar was broken: “If … the engines became unattached, the second engine could turn sharply and pitch a boater overboard, or it could be difficult for its captain to steer.” The GPS data published by Fort Lauderdale police reveals erratic changes in Zion’s speed and direction as it headed out to sea; but what was breaking – the tie bar, or Aguiar?

According to GPS, which he turned on at 7:29pm, the boat was headed north-east, increasing and decreasing in speed along the way. But at 7:56pm, the boat’s speed dropped suddenly from 10MPH to just .03, about-faced, then drifted back to shore. Could that have been the moment he was pitched overboard? Possibly; though suicide has not been ruled out by police - Aguiar’s history of mental instability, looming divorce

GHOST

Think of a million dollar mystery, dripping with glamour and power and lawyers, set within Florida’s swankiest suburbs. Our protagonist, a Brazilian-born American, is a self-made multimillionaire and husband to the beautiful Jamie Black. One evening he takes his boat for a spin, but early next morning it washes ashore with lights on and the engine running. His wallet and mobile phone are on board, but the man himself is missing. This isn’t a Jackie Collin’s caper, but our season finale – a true-life account of Guma Aguiar and his ghost boat, the T.T. Zion.

and his uncle’s lawsuit have been cited as motive. A close family

friend, Wes Shelton, described Guma’s situation as “fighting a

world that he probably felt like was crashing down on him.” A

broken tie-bar wouldn’t have stopped him from driving towards

his death.

The only problem with these theories is body of evidence –

there isn't one. In the two or so years since his disappearance,

his body hasn’t washed ashore. Strange, considering his boat

did. And strange to think that, during the three day search and

rescue effort, his body wasn’t sighted at sea. This leads us to a

third and final theory – Guma Aguiar is alive...

A man with mental, marital and money pressures might

not resort to suicide, not if he had the means to disappear.

According to marine surveyor Henry Pickersgill, the GPS

indicates the Zion “stopped for enough time for Mr Aguiar to

have transferred to another vessel […] you can easily say he

keeps working northeast towards whatever he’s looking for,

goes to it, steps off the boat, doesn’t turn the engine off and

lets it go. It takes about half a second to jump to another boat.”

Travis Mandell of Fort Lauderdale Police added: “with [Aguiar’s]

amount of means, it would be quite easy for him to stage his

own disappearance.”

As a Zionist, the idea of immigrating to Israel was described by

him as “a personal dream.” He already owned properties out

there. But could he have really abandoned his children? Aguiar

was Jewish – a convert, but Orthodox – he took God seriously,

and abandonment may well have been his only option – suicide

considered as an ultimate sin.

But with such an unstable mental history, how can any

conclusion be drawn? Aguiar was known to be erratic and

spontaneous – did he bust out to sea on his T.T. Zion despite

knowing the tie-bar was broken? Did he kill himself despite

God? Or did he jump boat to pursue a new life? “He had every

intention to get away” says his Rabbi Tovia Singer, “I hope and

pray that wherever he is, he’s OK and not torturing himself.”

Maritime Memorieswith Nigel Lingard (Non-Executive Director, Reader Offers Ltd)

NIGEL’S

The most recent get-together saw a very buoyant atmosphere, with optimism for success with all the ships now on order right through to 2020!

This year in Southampton we will see P&O’s new Britannia, sporting her controversial modernistic livery, setting sail as the largest cruise ship ever dedicated to the UK market. Not to be outdone, Royal Caribbean will promptly bring their brand new Anthem of the Seas, with its futuristic entertainment concepts, in competition. Please see pages 18-19 and 24-25 to travel on board these magnificent new ships.

For those who prefer a smaller ship to these 3,500 passenger giants, our friends at Cruise & Maritime have acquired a 1,250 passenger ship to sail as Magellan, so adding even more choice for British cruise fans. See pages 13 & 15 to sail on Magellan’s maiden season.

This is a year in which several new regulatory measures come into play as environmental protection moves ever higher up the agenda.

One example is the Svalbard Archipelago, where restrictions on the type of fuel which can be carried are severely limiting the number of cruise

lines prepared to operate there. Some years ago we were lucky enough to circumnavigate the islands with a Russian icebreaker operated by Quark Expeditions. A few similar adventure trips can still be found, but one of the few mainstream cruise lines still offering visits to

Spitsbergen, the only part of the region now accessible, is Fred. Olsen.

Wishing you all calm seas and fair skies.

I HAD ANOTHER ONE OF THOSE “HOW TIME FLIES” MOMENTS JUST BEFORE CHRISTMAS, WHEN FRED. OLSEN’S BLACK WATCH WAS THE VENUE FOR THE ANNUAL CRUISE INDUSTRY TRADE DINNER WHILST MOORED AT TILBURY.

Back in 1998 I was proud to be elected Chairman of what was then the Passenger Shipping Association, and hosted a dinner on the very same ship. With the globalisation of the business, the organisation is now the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), but its role as the primary trade regulatory and promotional body remains the same.

Events like the Costa Concordia accident may have been challenging for cruise lines, but the continued popularity of cruise holidays still helps to drive further growth.

CONTINUED POPULARITY OF

CRUISE HOLIDAYS STILL HELPS TO DRIVE FURTHER

GROWTH.
