Advanced Pork has added a truck wash, a feed mill, and multiple employees in the past year. Hurst then highlighted the importance of quality of life, including health care, education, and recreation, to both existing residents and those who might consider relocating to Atchison County. The City of Rock Port was presented with the 2015 Quality of Life award in recognition of several projects that have had a visible and practical impact in the City Park area, including fencing, an updated shelter house, and new restrooms (funded largely by the Pitching in for Potties campaign). Doug Garrison, part- owner and manager of Advanced Pork, spoke about steps they have taken to increase efficiency over the past year. The first step was to add trucks to haul pigs, rather than contracting these services out. In conjunction with the trucks, Advanced Pork also added a truck wash and drying equipment, adding three truck drivers and four truck washers, all local. The next area of the business they tackled was feed. Instead of purchasing feed from other area, they decided to construct a feed mill to make their own food for the sow farms. As a result, they will be purchasing about 800,000 bushels of corn locally, in addition to what they grow, to process in their mill. Finally, they are working to transition from crates to pens by 2017. Advanced Pork has 71 employees, 41 of which live in Atchison County. They purchase locally as often as possible, and also require local purchasing from people we contract with. With all of the improvements completed, they expect to add 10-12 more jobs. Roger Steinkruger, CEO of Community Hospital- Fairfax, discussed four recent and upcoming initiatives. Last year, CH-F leadership asked the Board to hold them to a higher standard and to measure actions against the principals of continuous performance improvement, quality and patient safety. Ann Schlueter, Director of Strategic Planning, led the pursuit of DNV accreditation, which they attained in April. By earning accreditation, CH-F demonstrated it meets or exceeds patient safety standards set forth by the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. CH-F was the first hospital in MO to be DNV accredited. The second initiative is upgrading medical records, an effort led by Harold Lawrence. CH-F is also opening a clinic in Oregon in November, resulting in three facilities to serve the area: Fairfax Hospital, Mound City Clinic, and the Oregon Clinic. The final initiative mentioned was the Senior Life Solutions support program for people over 65. This program will be Medicare funded and involve 4-5 hour days, including lunch. Farmer thanked both speakers and acknowledged CH-F as the largest employer in Atchison County with 120 ACDC... Continued from Front Page. staff members, commending them for commitment to excellence, their ongoing efforts to recruit and retain our best and brightest, and their leadership role in our county and region. He then presented CH-F with the 2015 Economic Development award. Treasurer Bob Alldredge presented financials and reminded attendees that information about these public funds are available at the ACDC office anytime. Executive Director Monica Bailey thanked board members and Administrative Assistant Carol Clark for their support of the organization and congratulated the honorees. Bailey highlighted several projects from the past year. Youth Professionalism Workshop was held last November and included interview skills, workplace ethics, social media and testimonials from leaders and employers in Atchison County. The second annual workshop will be held on November 23 for Juniors and will consist of morning breakout sessions and afternoon tours to area employers. Great Northwest Day at the Capital in February highlighted the Business Improvement Grant and the impact it has had on Atchison County businesses and economy. C o m m u n i t y Brainstorming Session in March resulted in a multitude of ideas, some of which are beginning to be implemented by ACDC (better advertising local career options, connecting youth with employers, marketing what Atchison County has to offer), some of which will require considerable funding support (loans for individuals/alumni looking to buy existing businesses, housing). Business Improvement Grant is wrapping up year 3. When this year's 40 projects are complete, a total of $85,000 in county tax dollars will have been invested in 98 different business improvement projects, resulting in $176,000 in purchases from Atchison County vendors, since the beginning of the program. Rock Creek Wind Project EEZ was approved in June. Representatives from all political subdivisions were present and in favor of the project. The overall economic impact of this project, as reported by Tradewind, is a total of $41,355,000 over 21 years, with an annual average of over $2 million in additional taxes. Tradewind is currently working with the county on additional agreements and this project continues to move forward, with the expected construction timeframe of Spring 2016 to Spring 2017. Bailey gave a general overview of how ACDC spends its time, including assisting existing businesses (Business Improvement Grant, a listing on our website); recruiting businesses and marketing Atchison County (working on major website overhaul); connecting with youth (scholarships expanded to include one from each school for both a 2-year community college or tech school program AND a 4-year undergraduate degree); supporting worthwhile, beneficial community efforts through the Community Enrichment Fund (Battle of the Books, marketing for BAM in Rock Port and Tarkio, betterment projects at our golf courses); growing and promoting our region (leadership in Roundtable of Economic Developers, Great Northwest Day); and focusing on the GOOD in our county. Bailey asked attendees to be people who celebrate what we DO have and reminded everyone that there are always reasons to be thankful in Atchison County.
