Blue jays are not actually blue, they have what’s known as structural color. The bright cobalt
color is the result of the unique inner structure of the feathers, which distort the reflection of
light off the bird, making it look blue.
12
Male and female blue jays are almost identical in appearance. Males are just slightly larger than females.
13
Their blue crests atop their heads tell us about the bird’s temperament: a
raised crest signifies agitation or anger, while a lowered crest means the bird
is relaxed or calm.
14
Blue jays typically mate for life, and the male builds most of the nest. Females lay on average a clutch of 4–5 blueish or tan
speckled eggs. They hatch after 2–3 weeks. Doting parents are protective of the nest and very attendant to their offspring’s needs. Jays
can live about 6–8 years in the wild.
Also blue jays are intelligent and resourceful. They have been found to make tools to gather out-of-reach food pellets.
They can use their calls to take food from other jays—a blue jay perched near a feeding bird and mimicked a red-shouldered hawk’s call. Another jay was feeding, heard the call, thought a hawk was nearby, and flew away. The blue jay then swooped down and ate the food left by the bird.
15
Blue jays routinely collect nuts and acorns and cache them in the ground for a later date when food is scarce. A single jay may cache many thousands of nuts each year. Jays will forget about the food they have stored, but the nuts will germinate and grow, extending the tree population.
16
After studying many blue jays, it has been found that everyone of the jays in the study group was so different from the other jays that each bird could be picked out in a crowd of blue jays. It is the black markings on the face and head that make the difference.

–Romans 10:11, 12
For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and
the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.
