In the history of jazz music, there is only one bandleader that has the distinction of having his orchestra still performing sold out concerts all over the world, with members personally chosen by him, for nearly 30 years after his pass-ing. Pianist and bandleader William James “Count” Basie was and still is an American institution that personifies the grandeur and excellence of jazz. The Count Basie Orchestra has won every respected jazz poll in the world at least once, won 18 GRAMMY® Awards, performed for Kings, Queens, and other world royalty, appeared in several movies, television shows, at every major jazz festival and concert hall in the world. Some of the greatest soloists, composers, arrangers, and vocalists in jazz history such as Les-ter Young, Billie Holiday, Frank Foster, Thad Jones, Sonny Payne, Freddie Green, Snooky Young, Frank Wess, and Joe Williams, became international stars once they began working with the legendary Count Basie Orchestra. This great 18 member orchestra, to-day directed by Scotty Barnhart, is still continuing the excellent history started by Basie of stomping and shouting the blues, as well as refining those musical particulars that allow for the deepest and most moving of swing.

William “Count” Basie was born in Red Bank, New Jersey in 1904. He began his early playing days by working as a silent movie pianist and organist and by eventually working with the The-ater Owners Booking Agency (TOBA) circuit. It is also sometimes referred to as the “chitlin’ circuit” that catered primarily to the African-American communities in the South, East, and Mid-West. In 1927, Basie, then touring with Gonzelle White and the Big Jazz Jamboree, found himself stranded in Kansas City, Missouri. It was here that he would begin to explore his deep love of the Blues, and meet his future bandmates including bassist Walter Page.

Since Basie’s passing in 1984, Thad Jones, Frank Foster, Grover Mitchell, Bill Hughes, Dennis Mackrel, and now Scotty Barnhart, have led the Count Basie Orchestra and maintained it as one of the elite performing organiza-tions in jazz. Current members include several musicians hired by Basie him-self. n

She has worked with luminaries such as Herbie Hancock, Phil Ramone, Will.i.am, Wyclef Jean, and Elton John, and now, under the guidance of her greatest fan and mentor, Quincy Jones, Nikki is ready to introduce her own captivating new sound. Get ready to be amazed by her inimitable voice as she arrives at the unique crossroad where jazz meets pop, delivering siz-zling songs that blend retro charm with a contemporary sound helmed by Rob Kleiner, the man behind exciting music by Cee-lo Green and Flo-Rida.

She performs in support of her new album, Little Secret, released in May 2014. n

Arturo Sandoval is fluent in at least four musical languages. He can burn through an Afro-Cuban groove, tear up a bebop tune, soar over a Mozart concerto and sooth you with a luscious ballad; with equal power and grace.

Granted political asylum in July 1990 and US citizenship in 1999, Sandoval and his family now call Miami, Florida home. A protégé of the legendary jazz master Dizzy Gillespie, Sandoval was born in Artemisa, a small town in the outskirts of Havana, Cuba, on No-vember 6, 1949, just two years after Gillespie became the first musician to bring Latin influences into American Jazz. Sandoval began studying classi-

cal trumpet at the age of twelve, but it didn’t take him long to catch the excitement of the jazz world. He has since evolved into one of the World’s most acknowledged guardians of jazz trumpet and flugel horn, as well as a renowned classical artist, pianist and composer.

Arturo Sandoval has been awarded four GRAMMY® Awards, six Billboard Awards and an Emmy® Award. The latter for his composing work on the entire underscore of the HBO movie based on his life, For Love or Country starring Andy Garcia. He is one of the most dynamic and vivacious live per-formers of our time, and has recently been seen by millions in the Grammy Awards performing with pop-phenom-enon Justin Timberlake as well as on the Latin Billboard Awards with the gift-ed Alicia Keys, where he was awarded his sixth Billboard Awards for “Best Latin Jazz Album”.

Arturo Sandoval’s versatility can be heard on recordings with everyone from Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Herman, Woody Shaw, Michel Legrand, Bill Conti, and Stan Getz to Johnny Mathis, Frank Sinatra, Paul Anka, Rod Stewart and Alicia Keys amongst many others. He has performed with Celine Dione at the Oscars, John Williams with the Boston Pops, and in the Super bowl with Tony Bennet and Patti LaBelle. His playing can also be heard on Dave Grusin’s soundtrack for Havana, in the Mambo Kings soundtrack with his Grammy nominated composition Mambo Caliente, in the soundtrack of The Perez Family, was commissioned by the Kennedy Center to compose the music for the ballet of Pepito’s Story choreographed by Debbie Allen. n

Chris graduated from the New School University for Jazz and Contemporary Music. There he met his future band mates who form the band ERIMAJ, Chris serves as the lead vocalist, the New York Times describes the band as “properly new, part of something larger and still unnamed”. Peter Beets is one of the most recog-nized piano giants of our time. He is ac-claimed and praised worldwide and his star keeps on rising, while his creativity keeps increasing. In variable musical activities, from the accompaniment of ‘first lady of jazz’ Rita Reys or guests of the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertge-bouw to latin-jazz and his timeless ar-rangements of classical music, Beets’ personality and signature are always unmistakably audible.

The many awards he has received through the years are the Edison (Dutch

ANGELA JOHNSON

Something magical happens when a woman arrives and stops being afraid of the resonating fullness of her power and the potential impact of her voice. It can take a while for it to happen, decades even. But, when that internal click happens, that freeing moment in her life when she embraces the mag-nificence of her flawlessly flawed mind, body, and gifts, new levels of inner peace and creativity are achieved and it’s a thing of wonder to behold. After nearly 20 years in the music industry, such a moment has finally happened for triple threat singer/songwriter/pro-ducer Angela Johnson, the First Lady of Purpose Music Group. No longer the girl next door or the superwoman who thought she had to be super to be extraordinary, here is Angela Johnson unfiltered, unvarnished and definitely un-bossed. The title of her sixth solo album, Naturally Me, says it all, since Johnson wrote, composed, and pro-duced every single song on this inti-mate ten-track release. Throughout, Johnson is a woman claiming her

power and sharing her thoughts and feelings about matters of serious im-port, from politics and social injustice to motherhood and relationships of the real, not manufactured kind. Honest and direct, Naturally Me is a portrait of an artist fully realized, at last.

BRADD MARQUIS

Bradd Marquis is a multi-talented entertainer (singer, actor, writer and producer). He was awarded the Soul Singer of the Year award on BET’s 106 & Park and has also shared the stage as part of a tour that featured singers, India Arie, Jaheim, Tamia and GRAMMY® Award winning producer, Gordon Chambers. During one per-formance, R&B hit maker, R. Kelly was also brought to his feet, giving him a standing ovation for his captivating performance. Bradd Marquis is quickly becoming a name that continues to be repeated when quality male vocalists are mentioned these days. Oozing with soul this versatile young man brings the essence of music, pure and simple to any stage he graces. n

The highest praise Duke Ellington would offer people he admired was to say that their music was “beyond category” – and, in many ways, that phrase exactly captures the spirit of GRAMMY® Award-winning guitar vir-tuoso Earl Klugh and his latest, largely solo album, HandPicked, on Heads Up (part of the Concord Music Group).

Since Klugh released his inaugural al-bum in 1976, the Detroit-born master of the acoustic-classical guitar has be-come one of the most imitated icons of the instrument, issued dozens of discs, 23 of which have been on Billboard’s top-10 list of jazz albums and 5 that made it to the No. 1 slot. During that time, Klugh’s recordings also received 12 GRAMMY® nominations (the lat-est of which was for his 2008 CD The Spice of Life) – and his collaboration with pianist Bob James, One on One, walked away with the 1980 GRAM-MY® Award for Best Pop Instrumental Album.

In 1989, Klugh released his first solo-guitar album, titled simply Solo Guitar. Sixteen years later, his second solo re-cording, Naked Guitar, earned Klugh his 11th GRAMMY® nomination. Both of those discs were not only popular,

but they received high critical praise as well. HandPicked is on track to fol-low on exactly that same path. 13 of the album’s 16 tracks feature Klugh’s signature style of solo guitar mastery. The remaining tracks are duets with three very different players: famed jazz guitarist Bill Frisell; ukulele master Jake Shimabukuro; and Country Music Hall of Fame guitarist and singer Vince Gill.

Klugh is no stranger to collaborative work. His recordings, One on One, Two of a Kind and Cool with Bob James, and Collaboration with George Ben-son featured backing bands. However, HandPicked showcases Klugh’s first recorded duets in the purest sense of the word. No band, just beautifully ar-ranged string duets between Earl and his friends.

But whatever the format, the songs on the album were hand picked by the youthful looking Klugh to mark his 60th birthday last year in 2013. All of them highlight the intimate, intricate, reflec-tive and lyrical approach to music that is the hallmark of the guitarist’s playing. And all of them were personally select-ed, hand picked, by Klugh, reflecting his favorite songs and offering a tribute to his musical heroes. n

Join us for a night of great jazz with vocalist extraordinaire Julie Eigen-berg accompanied by Grammy Award winning pianist and composer Yaron Gershovsky, the musical director for the world famous Manhattan Transfer. Together with Boris Kozlov on Bass, & Benny Koonyevsky on percussion, they bring you Julie’s soulful interpre-tations with some swinging fun and jamming original songs. She co-wrote “Why Not!”, and Yaron Gershovsky did the arrangement, for which the Man-hattan Transfer won the 1983 GRAM-MY® Award for Best Jazz Vocal of a Group, on Atlantic Records. Together with Special Guest, World Guitar Mas-ter & Composer Andres Laprida, who has also published songs with Julie, they will explore new arrangements of familiar standards and Brazilian clas-sics along with original songs from Ju-lie’s Polystar Co. Japan , Ltd. record-ing, produced and written with David Spinozza.

Julie Eigenberg began her singing career in NYC, performing with such greats as George Duvivier, Vicki Sue

Robinson, Moogy Klingman, the Brecker Bros., Leon Pendarvis, An-thony Jackson, and Will Lee, to name just a few.

She went on to record her album, Love is Starting Now, produced by David Spinozza. Julie is a soulful interpreter of classic Jazz standards and her own pop/Latin influenced genre or songs. Her music comes from the heart and she sings with a confidence and style that has captured fans from around the world.

Yaron Gershovsky is widely recog-nized as an accomplished musician, whose long list of credits demon-strates versatility and excellence as a Pianist/Keyboardist, Arranger, Com-poser and Producer. Yaron wrote two vocal arrangements for the group’s latest Christmas A Capella CD, (one of them in collaboration with Janis Siegel). The Manhattan Transfer’s CD, The Symphony Sessions features Yaron on the piano, as well as his big band arrangement for: “All Heart”, dedicated to Ella Fitzgerald. n

Blue Note Jazz Club is proud to wel-come back trombonist CONRAD HER-WIG with THE LATIN SIDE OF HORACE SILVER program - the seventh iteration of his “Latin Side” franchise, spotlight-ing the music of jazz legend Horace Sil-ver (who recently passed away in June 2014). The project will be recorded live each night and later released on Half Note Records in 2015.

Since 1998, Herwig’s “Latin Side” fran-chise has been focused on reimagining seminal jazz musicians’ compositions by showcasing those compositions within the framework of Afro-Cuban and Afro-Caribbean rhythms. Past projects include the GRAMMY® nomi-nated The Latin Side of John Coltrane, Another Kind of Blue-The Latin Side of Miles Davis, and The Latin Side of Wayne Shorter, as well as Sketches of Spain y Mas and The Latin Side of Her-bie Hancock. Many of these albums have featured various special guests, ranging from Eddie Palmieri and Randy Brecker to Paquito D’Rivera and Dave Valentin. All of the albums have been released on Half Note Records.

Herwig’s latest “Latin Side” release, The Latin Side of Joe Henderson fea-turing Joe Lovano, is scheduled for September 16 release on Half Note.

In constant demand as a sideman, Herwig has been a featured member in the Joe Henderson Sextet, Tom Harrell’s Septet and Big Band, and the Joe Lovano Nonet (featured as a soloist on Lovano’s Grammy Award winning “52nd St Themes”). Conrad also performs and records with Eddie Palmieri’s “La Perfecta II” and Afro-Ca-ribbean Jazz Octet, Paquito D’Rivera’s Havana-New York Connection, the Mingus Big Band (often serving as mu-sical director, and arranger on the new 2007 GRAMMY® nominated-Live at the Tokyo Blue Note), and the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band (Jon Faddis, musical director) among many others.

MICHEL CAMILO A pianist with a brilliant technique and a composer that flavors his tunes with Afro-Caribbean rhythms, Michel Cami-lo’s musical language is an expressive combination of his Dominican Republic musical heritage and a rich, intelligent use of jazz harmonies and textures. Mr. Camilo’s recordings and compositions have earned him numerous awards including GRAMMY® awards, GRAM-MY® nominations, and Emmy® awards. His compositions have been performed by some of the top jazz and Latin jazz artists on the scene today including Manhattan Transfer and Paquito D’Rivera. n

Mad Satta is carving a place for itself in the hearts and minds of today’s mu-sic lovers with original, forward-think-ing, new-school soul. This ultra-tight, eight-piece outfit is held down by edgy bassline grooves and a sophisticated mix of guitar, organ, drums and horns that surround and support the powerful, smoky vocals of frontwoman Joanna Teters. Increasingly recognized for her ability to switch effortlessly from lush, deeply sultry tones to rugged reggae, Teters’ serves her audiences with play-ful, energetic performances of both orig-inal compositions and covers including Outkast, Curtis Mayfield and Amy Wine-house.

Born from a duo of Teters and bass player Ben Carr, Mad Satta now in-cludes keyboardist Kevin Theodore

Nanny Assis was born in the northeast-ern Brazilian city of Salvador, Bahia, in 1969. One of Brazil’s first cities, with pre-dominant African influences, Salvador is the birthplace of some of the coun-try’s most remarkable music creations. That, in part, explains why Nanny has music running through his veins, mak-ing him an outstanding singer, a terrific drummer/percussionist, and a talented songwriter who has touched hearts and souls through musical expressions that go beyond comprehension.

Since 1986, when he began his suc-cessful professional career, Nanny As-sis has played with amazing artists like Vinicius Cantauria, Eumir Deodato, and

Praised by Newsweek for his pure melodic genius, Tom Harrell is widely recognized as one of the most creative and dynamic jazz instrumentalists and composers of our time. While Harrell is a master of the jazz idiom, he con-stantly seeks new challenges and in-fluences. Even with a discography of over 260 recordings and a career that spans more than four decades, Harrell has managed to stay fresh and current as he continues to actively record and tour around the world. He is a frequent winner in DownBeat and JazzTimes magazines’ Critics and Readers Polls and a GRAMMY® nominee. Harrell is also a Trumpeter of the Year nominee for the 2012 Jazz Journalists Asso-ciation Awards. His warm, burnished sound on the trumpet and the flugel-horn, and the unparalleled harmonic and rhythmic sophistication in his playing and writing, have earned Har-rell his place as a jazz icon to aspir-ing musicians and devoted fans alike. His music is at once intelligent, soulful, fresh and accessible.

A graduate of Stanford University with a degree in music composition, Har-rell is a prolific composer and arranger. Carlos Santana, Cold Blood, Azteca, Vince Guaraldi, Hank Jones, Kenny Barron, the Vanguard Jazz Orches-tra, Danish Radio Big Band, WDR Big Band, Brussels Jazz Orchestra, Metro-pole Orchestra and Arturo O’Farrill & the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra are among the many who have recorded or performed his work. Harrell’s composi-tion and arrangement, “Humility,” was recorded for the latter’s 2008 release, which just won a GRAMMY® for the Best Latin Jazz Album.

In addition to the 27 albums and thou-sands of concerts worldwide as a lead-er, Harrell has worked with important figures in jazz history including Stan Kenton, Woody Herman, Dizzie Gil-lespie, Horace Silver, Bill Evans, Gerry Mulligan, Art Farmer, Phil Woods, Lee Konitz, Sam Jones (with whom he briefly co-led a big band in the 70s), Jim Hall, Charlie Haden, Joe Lovano and Charles McPherson. n

Over the course of a multifaceted ca-reer spanning four decades, Grammy and Tony Award-winning jazz giant DEE DEE BRIDGEWATER has ascend-ed to the upper echelon of vocalists, putting her unique spin on standards, as well as taking intrepid leaps of faith in re-envisioning jazz classics. Ever the fearless voyager, explorer, pioneer and keeper of tradition, the three-time Grammy-winner recently won the 2011 GRAMMY® for Best Jazz Vocal Album for ELEANORA FAGAN (1915-1959):

TO BILLIE WITH LOVE FROM DEE DEE. Bridgewater’s career has always bridged musical genres. She earned her first professional experience as a member of the legendary Thad Jones/Mel Louis Big Band, and throughout the 70’s she performed with such jazz notables as Max Roach, Sonny Roll-ins, Dexter Gordon and Dizzy Gillespie. After a foray into the pop world dur-ing the 1980s, she relocated to Paris and began to turn her attention back to jazz. Signing with the Universal Mu-sic Group as a producer (Bridgewater produces all of her CDs), Bridgewater released a series of critically acclaimed titles beginning with Keeping Tradi-tion in 1993. All but one, including her wildly successful double GRAMMY® Award-winning tribute to Ella Fitzger-ald, Dear Ella - have received GRAM-MY® nominations.

Bridgewater also pursued a parallel career in musical theater, winning a Tony Award for her role as “Glinda” in The Wiz in 1975. Her other theatrical credits include Sophisticated Ladies, Black Ballad, Carmen, Cabaret and the West End Production of Lady Day, for which Bridgewater received the British Laurence Olivier Nomination for Best Actress in a Musical. She is currently starring in the lead role as Billie Holiday in Lady Day at the Little Schubert The-ater in New York City.

As a Goodwill Ambassador to the United Nations’ Food and Agricul-ture Organization (FAO), Bridgewater continues to appeal for international solidarity to finance global grassroots projects in the fight against world hun-ger. She is also in her 11th year of host-ing NPR’s award-winning weekly syn-dicated show, JazzSet with Dee Dee Bridgewater (WBGO). n
