You began Ash May Jewellery while you were overseas in 2011. What was the trip originally intended for?

The trip was definitely an intended adventure, it always is! California and New York were places that I had dreamt about for a while, so I left home with my best friend with not much of a plan and not too much money either. I crashed on friend’s couches for a few months in California, then lived in New York City for a year. It was a lot of fun and an interesting journey for sure!

Do you remember the first piece of jewellery you ever made and where is it now?

I found a really odd chunk of frosted glass in Yosemite National Park in California, near the Rainbow Waterfall Hiking Trail. I thought it was pretty interesting and special, so I bought some wire and made a really bad ring, unfortunately I lost the ring in New York.

 

 

Ash May Jewllery was born when a girl’s curiousity for collecting beautiful treasures found in the natural world was combined with her passion for craft‐making. The result is breathtaking pieces of handcrafted jewllery that add the perfect bohemian touch to any outfit.

Where do you get your inspiration?

My work combines elements of nature, spirituality, metaphysics and human energy systems. I guess I also really like the idea of making art which celebrates the beauty of nature and can also be something special that people can wear.

 

Did you undertake a course on jewellery making or design before starting your business? I did a short course a couple of nights a week for 2 months when I was in Sydney a few years ago. But my design aesthetic today is definitely self-taught. It took a lot of trial and error, practice with wire and collecting materials whilst traveling on the road in California, to get to where I am today.

` Follow your heart and intuition, don't follow trends, be courageous, don't worry about what others think, create your own style and go with it!

Australia is so special and unique, I believe it's important that we preserve our beautiful backyard and also the species which exist here.

Tell us a little bit about yourself 

Well, I moved to Australia the day after I graduated high school in New Zealand when I was 17, after feeling wanderlust and wanting to chase love across the Pacific Ocean. 

I’m a hopeless romantic who will do anything for the people I love and as much as I enjoy to be out exploring this city or jotting around Melbourne on dinner dates, I love spending time alone and being in bed journaling is all my cup of tea. I ride a scooter, adore Lula magazine and am infatuated with China, addicted to tumblr, drink only soy lattes, believe in second chances and secretly gym to a Justin Bieber playlist.  

I am beyond fascinated by our planet and the people that surround me and would love to figure out what everyone is searching for, where everyone wants to go and what their wildest dreams are.  

 

When did you start Romersk sleepwear and how did it come about? 

I started Romersk 2 years ago and it started as a small idea on a sketchbook one summer’s day and it has evolved into something that I am so very passionate about and something that I refuse to give up on. Romersk not only represents my wildest dreams but I also hope to encourage others to live theirs. I have never been to university so the idea to begin my own label was fairly scary and totally new to me but I have learnt more than I could have ever imagined on my own. I began by designing one collection and since then I just haven’t been able to stop!

Why sleepwear? 

I love designing sleepwear because I could never find exactly what I was looking for in that department. I love the limitless possibilities that sleepwear holds, there is nothing that is too crazy or that’s not in trend. For me, most of my journaling and creative processes happen when I’m at home in bed and I love the way that an amazing, comfortable pair of pajamas can make you feel. I don’t believe in not feeling pretty and wonderful in bed because it’s such an important part of your day to get good night’s rest.  

 

Your collections range from 50’s old school to childhood fantasy, where do you get your inspiration? 

I love to pull inspiration from all things that I do, the places I have been lucky enough to visit and the passion that lies in the people around me. I am really inspired by seeing young people do what they love and by people who are passionate about living their dreams because I believe in doing what you love and doing it now as you only get one chance.  

I am inspired by heartbreak, road trips, empty beaches, travelling alone, young love, Taylor Swift lyrics, wedding blogs,  the feeling you get from just walking around New York City, sunsets, city skylines, greek mythology, film photography, Nora Jones, typography, vintage wallpaper, illustration, Lana Del Ray ballads, wildflowers, glitter, jazz music, 1950s film, Mary Katrantzou, and most importantly, our generation. 

 

‘I believe in doing what you love and doing it now’ 

Are you working on anything at the moment? 

Yes! As of last week we have just begun manufacturing in Melbourne, which is really exciting for us. I love making use of the skills and talent we have in our corner of the globe, it’s really important to me! We have 2 summer drops this year, which will be out really soon. One is lingerie inspired and we recently shot on a New York rooftop. The second summer drop is really exciting because since I began Romersk I have had constant requests for onesies and I think this collection might just fulfill that request!  

 

Best advice you’ve ever been given? 

A boy once told me that if you smile, the world will smile back. I think the reason this is so important to me is because in more than one situation this has proved me to see the beauty and positivity in things around me even when I don’t think it’s there or when I feel like giving up and things don’t seem great, there is always something to smile about and the universe will hear that.

I haven’t done a winter range yet so due to the 5 degrees Melbourne has been graced with lately, I have been wearing thermals to bed! But in summer I live in my black velvet shorts. They’re like lying in marshmallows!  Everyone always asks me if the velvet is comfortable to sleep in and that’s that only way I have ever been able to describe them.  

If you could choose one celebrity to wear your designs who would it be and why? 

I think Mila Kunis would look killer in Romersk but then again I think she looks insanely beautiful in everything! I would really love for Lilly Collins to wear Romersk as I really respect her and love her laidback and natural look.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and Sofar Sounds? Songs From a Room began in March 2009 in London. It is an innovative concept, dedicated to bringing the best of new music to an unplugged and intimate private setting. Mix in a crowd of dedicated music lovers, other artists, and industry professionals, and you have an evening, which promises electric performances and new networks. Leyla and myself run the Melbourne branch of Sofar Sounds - its in 15 cities around the world and we are lucky to be apart of this movement. When was the first Melbourne Sofar Sounds? Melbourne's first show was in March this year, we were lucky enough to have Rocky, who started the whole movement, in Melbourne to help us put on our first show. We lined up some great bands and begged my best friend to let me fill her living room with 80 of my closest friends and we have been putting on shows every month since then.  

Sofar sounds: songs from a room, is exactly what the name suggests. If you like discovering new music from the comfort of a living room then read on…  

  How do you decide which bands play? The Sofar community decides who plays at each show, Leyla and I suggest bands/acts and then send them off to the team. We get responses yes/no/maybe. We have been lucky enough to have had some great bands start emailing us wanting to become apart of a show. Generally we want bands who appreciate playing to an audience of silent music lovers who are there to listen. How do you decide where each show is played? With the promise of a bottle of wine and our everlasting love we beg our friends with large living rooms to lend them to us for the night.  

Give us the low down on the next show? The best thing about a Sofar show is that its a surprise who is playing! 4 bands, 4 songs, you find out the location the day before via email/text message.

EMMY BRYCE is a singer/songwriter from Melbourne who’s happy and vibrant songs left us wanting to know more about this 90’s pop inspired artist. Her single “Hit the Ground” was recently featured on the hit TV show Offspring and it seems to only be getting better for this contagiously energetic musician. 

Your song was recently played on the TV show Offspring, how did that come about? 

I just submitted some music to the supervisor and I guess they just really liked it!  It was so exciting.  They don’t tell you when it’s going to be played so you just have to sit there and wait for it to come on. I thought they might’ve cut it because it didn’t come on until the last five minutes! My track ‘7days’ is also going to be played on Channel Seven’s Winners and Losers soon!  

What made you go from playing around on the guitar to giving the whole music business a real crack? 

It would’ve been around 3 years ago. I’d already been playing and being a “wedding singer” for a long time. It just never went anywhere. Then after a year in the country I was sort of like well… what now? It just seemed like the perfect time to give music a real go. And then I came to Melbourne and it was just a whole year of writing and co‐writing and then we released the EP and now we’re kind of here! 

 

Do you remember the first song you ever wrote? 

Oh god yes. I would’ve been about 12 or 13 and I wrote it about a boy that I liked who didn’t like me back. I can’t remember what it’s called though! I remember finding a tape of it and god it was just woeful. 

 

‘It’s kinda like I have a movie player in my head and I just write 

the soundtrack to it’ 

Where do you get the inspiration for your songs, are they mostly based on your own experiences? 

No, they’re never really based on my own experiences. I generally like to write about other things and other people. I look at other people and their lives and experiences and a story starts to unfold in my mind. It’s kinda like I have a movie player in my head and then I just write the soundtrack to it. 

 

What has been your most memorable gig and why? 

That would be when I supported David Shaw. He’s a Korean US artist who came out to Australia and we played at fed square. He sold out the show and the audience that came, they just were so supportive it was ridiculous! I practically got mobbed after! It was sort of my first paparatzi moment. It was awesome! (laughs) It was just nice, even when they listened to the music, they’d clap through a WHOLE song. They were just a really lovely crowd. 

 

What is your ultimate career goal? 

Hmmm… I guess my ultimate career goal would be to have a house in the country with a massive grand piano on an awesome deck and just writing songs for other people and myself. I’d have lots of people come stay with me and be able to write. I’d love to do that full‐time and just have a team of people to do everything else I don’t want to do! (laughs)

‘If you don’t make it no one will care.’ Best advice you’ve ever been given? 

Do you know what someone told me once and it’s really really harsh? But I kinda really liked it. He said to me ‘Emmy you know if you don’t make it no one will care.’ And I guess what he meant by that was you know, you’re the one that’s putting everything into it. Your parents will still love you no matter what, your fiance’ will still marry you even if your not famous. But you’re the one that’s going to care if you make it or not.  I guess that has just stuck with me and been what spurs me on. Just the fact that no one else will care but I damn well care. 

If you could do a duet with any other musician who would it be? 

Ooooooooo! So many! However I’d probably say Billy Joel haha, but then Freddy from Queen! But then I think Billy Joel is more my thing and an amazing writer! 

Funniest stuff up during a performance? 

Oh god there’s been so many! I’ve forgotten the lyrics to songs. I’m pretty forgetful with my own songs, I often forget the lyrics and then just have to make them up on the spot! And then my guitarist will look at me as if to say ‘seriously I can’t believe you forget the lyrics to your own songs.’

France was the first country I visited and I was absolutely amazed. My first thought was wow, the streets are so clean and the people are so posh! I enjoyed attempting to speak the language and remembering phrases from year 10 French classes. The French really appreciate you attempting to speak their language, no matter how bad you are. But if I had to describe Paris in one word I would say magnifique! It is a city that overwhelms you with history. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The singers the dancers, the costumes and props are all spectacular. Even from the outside the building looks brilliant!  

The Louvre 

Wow, the Louvre… The Louvre is so big that if you spent 4 seconds looking at every piece of art you would be there for 3 months! So you have to prioritise. I was able to see the Mona Lisa from a mere meter away, being stopped by security guards before I got too close. It’s a lot smaller than I expected but fantastic to see in reality. I also enjoyed the Venus de milo and winged victory sculptures. 

 

 

Eiffel Tower 

Before I physically saw the Eiffel tower I believed I was going to climb it. I took one look at the enormous iron structure and realised that it would take me hours and opted for the lift. The first floor’s view is simply stunning. You could not believe that there are two floors higher and it just gets better with every climb.  

The view of Paris at night is very impressive, but very cold!   

 

Every night, every hour the tower comes to life with lights for 5 minutes and presents a sparkling spectacle. Now this is a sight to see (preferably from a distance so you can take some great photos and videos!).

Moulin Rouge 

Moulin Rouge is such an enjoyable night. It’s everything you could imagine and more.

Notre Dame 

I was lucky enough to visit the Notre Dame on a Sunday, while a mass was in progress. I was in awe of the massive choir, and just the enormity of the cathedral. I just stood and stared gob smacked that a building could leave you in such amazement. This experience was a personal favourite of mine. 

 Champs Elysees 

Walking down the Champs Elysees I felt like I was in a movie. This is the go to street for shopping. From Louis Vuitton to H & M, every store you can think of is in this street, as well as some gorgeous cafés that sell a delightful macaroon and hot chocolate combo! 

 

Arc de Triomphe 

While it is definitely a triumph to get to the top of the 300 plus stairs, the view is well worth the hike. It captures the best photo of Paris too with the Eiffel tower in the background.  

 

Culinary delight must have’s  

Crepes of any and every flavour are amazing, but you can’t go wrong with Nutella and banana. I enjoyed watching them being made nearly as much as I enjoyed eating them! 

 Frogs legs­ Unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to try frog’s legs (or maybe I didn’t have enough the guts) but apparently the rumors are true, they taste like chicken…  

 

Escargot­ I was brave enough to try the notorious snails and actually quite enjoyed them. Mind you, once you overcome the texture, all you can taste is garlic because they are drowning in garlic paste, delicious! The locals had an entertaining time watching us attempt to eat them as we struggled to get the snails out of their shells with the unfamiliar device we were given.

ALSO… If given the chance, I highly recommend a visit to the Monaco in the French Riveria. You feel like you’re living the high life in this city, surrounded by palaces and princesses. Visit one of the many casino’s and rub shoulders with the rich and famous. People play $100 chips like they’re mere cents. A gentleman won $2million dollars on the roulette table I was playing at the night before, and presented the dealers with a $90,000 tip!
