Recycling efforts

• Through efforts both supported and encouraged by county officials, our group has been spreading orange recycle bins within the community. Placing the bins in higher traffic areas such as the local school buildings, will increase the awareness of recycling efforts. Since the largest concentration of community involvement occurs in these areas. The bins have also been dispersed to the general public, when requested.

CFC Light Bulbs

• Compact fluorescent bulbs are far more energy efficient than incandescent bulbs. Through generous donations from Clark Energy RECC, we were able to distribute numerous CFC bulbs to the public in an effort to increase awareness for Go Green in the community.

Reusable Bags

• While handing out the CFC bulbs, our group distributed flyers for the reusable bags Kroger sells. These bags remove the need for plastic bags, and also create ways for shoppers to save money on their gas purchase. Providing the community with more incentive to Go Green.

Community Cleanup

• In efforts to increase both community awareness and involvement, our Go Green group initiated a community cleanup effort at the local city park. Volunteers from the community worked alongside our group to improve the overall look of the park. Community leaders involved with the cleanup have now offered to carry on the efforts with annual events to improve the green aspects of the park, drawing more individuals to use it and learn green habits.

Green Curriculum

• The Powell County Judge Executive, Darren Farmer, said that the best way to educate the community about the issues of recycling was through the youth. The Powell County “Go Green” Mafia has developed a Kentucky Core Content Based Curriculum to introduce 3-5th grade students to the negative effects of pollution and to recycling, reducing, and reusing.
