Welcome to the second edition of theBluePrint, the official Llandrindod Wells

AFC matchday programme. We also extend a warm welcome to our visiting team Aberaeron FC and supporters.

The first edition of theBluePrint was a huge success two weeks ago at

the Bont game. Of the 350 copies that were printed, over 320 were sold or donated to our very generous sponsors. The visit of the groundhoppers made the first edition of theBluePrint a runaway success and it has received very favourable reviews at the game

and post- match. We hope the forth-coming reviews of the groundhopper weekend programmes are as favourable! Thanks must go out to the guys who helped put the bumper edition together, especially club captain Gareth Jones with his well worded match reports and profiles!

This edition will be more reflective of the size of each edition you can expect at the first team home games. It will give good coverage to both the reserve and youth teams, as well as results from all levels once their season starts. There will also be new elements introduced over the season to keep the publication feeling fresh but it will contain individual player profiles, spot the ball and other elements you may see in programmes at the top level of the game. We at Llandrindod Wells AFC want to be a professional as possible. This starts at the top with the management and players‟ commitment and outstanding attitude, to the great work done by the committee members and ground staff who help make sure the club stays alive. It is now in a position to thrive and every little thing we can do to elevate the club, from it‟s fantastic and unique support to this publication

A word from our Chairman

It is with great sadness that today‟s game will be marked by the passing of a truly influential figure from our club‟s past, Phil „Robbo‟ Robinson. In consultation with close family, it has been decided to play the game in his honour, to give us a chance to remember andrespect all that he gave to the club and fans over the years. It is surely what he would have wanted. We pass on our sincere condolences and are sure that today's funeral will be a fitting sendoff for a very special person.

Our opening game this season against Bont was a massiveday for us as a club. We were hosts to the Groundhoppers UK,and I am very proud to say we pulled out all the stops and made the visit a memorable one. I must congratulate Dave and Gaz on the programs, they are fantastic. The pitch was superb, and on the day tasks were carried out without fault by gate collectors, raffle hostesses, cooks, servers, Tea Hut personnel, bar staff, store assistants, program sellers and all volunteers. A big thank you to

everybody. A full report of the day and subsequent feedback will be included in the next edition of BluePrint but it is already fact that we have the record for the biggest Groundhopper attendance in Wales. LWAFC is really is a sleeping giant, and its ready to be awoken.

This season will be a tough season for all clubs in this league, the club has to go into every game as if its a cup final, discipline and fitness is a must and that must come from the youth, the reserves right through to the firsts. We have to, and will reap the benefits of fielding a young fit team (with the random old head). Today's match against Aberaeron, is another journey to the unknown. New clubs, new challenges. The Management‟s ViewsI would like to take this opportunity in welcoming Abereiron to The Broadway today and hope they enjoy their visit. The good news for us is that Dan Thomas and Paul Watson who were unavailable last week are now back in the reckoning and rest

assured, in the absence of Nigel Thomas the manager, myself and Bones shall be doing everything in our power to get three points in the bag today.

Two weeks ago, the club had been very much looking forward to our first league game of the new season, especially with a large crowd expected from the Ground Hoppers UK and as it turned out, combined with a lot of local support, a total of 374 spectators (welsh groundhop uk record) watched what I believe was a fantastic game of football.

We knew we were in for a tough game knowing that Bont FC had won the Ceredigion league last season and that‟s exactly what we got. They started the game in a confident mood and created more opportunities than us in the first 15 minutes but failed to capitalise on them. We then settled and played some really good stuff with our best chance being struck against the crossbar by striker Chris Davies after a great move down the left hand side involving Will Green and Johnny Williams. After a goalless first half we started the second well, moving the ball quickly and creating chances but failed to put the ball in the net and were punished for not doing when against the run of play a quick break from Bont resulted in a goal to them. We knew we had to stay focused and believe we could get something from this game and eventually the hard graft, constant pressure and determination paid off with centre half Mike Watkins calmly slotting the ball just inside the right hand post from about 16 yards. 1-1 was the final score and although I felt we could have had all three points we have to accept the fact that we could have had nothing at all. Overall, it was a great performance in front of a fantastic Blue Army crowd, who never stopped singing throughout the match. Thanks to all fans for their support and all those that worked so hard to make this day such a success off the field as well as on. A great day for all involved.

Last week we were well aware that the second league game away to Rhosgochwould be a very different story. With a slightly different side from the weekend before, we welcomed skipper Gareth Jones back into the starting line up after a one match suspension and also Ben Jones and Paul Bishop into the squad after returning from a three month scive.

Rhosgoch, having put 10 past Talgarth the week before, began in very confident mood and made life very difficult for us, attacking with pace and we got caught very early on by conceding a goal in only the third minute of the game. A poor start and things

got worse for us with right back Huw Lewis hobbling off with an injured back only 10 minutes later. Five minutes later we were two down. I could only put this down to poor marking and again a lack of communication. We seemed slightly disorganised and unsure of who was marking who.

Anyway, heads up was the cry and for the rest of the first half we were the better team. With about 14 minutes of the first half remaining Ben Jones scored with a cracking header and half time just came too quickly for us as we were definitely back in this game.We started well again in the second half and our best chance to equalise came after about fifteen minutes but five minutes later we went 3-1 down after they capitalised on a free kick which was awarded to them on the edge of the box. Only about twenty minutes remained and it was difficult to see 2 goals coming but the lads in fairness kept trying and got our second from the penalty spot with Johnny Williams hammering it into the corner after he himself had been brought down in the box. 3-2 the final score and unfortunately no points but we had only ourselves to blame, especially after those first very poor twenty minutes.

The Opposition – Aberaeron FC

Aberaeron F C Manager Alan Foligno and his

team to the Broadway in a game where both sides

will be desperately seeking three points to kick start

their season. Aberaeron is a small town situated

on the Cardigan Bay coast of West Wales and before this season the team were playing in the

Costcutter Ceredigion League where last season

they finished fourth behind eventual champions, Cardigan, New Quay and last

season‟s Emrys Morgan Cup quarter final opponents, Lampeter. The club‟s hopes

of progressing further in the Welsh Cup this season ended at the same stage as

the dod‟s as they fell to a 7-0 home defeat against Welsh Alliance division two

side Bodedern. The Ceredigion men, who had been hoping to impress in front of

the S4C cameras, had a slightly different experience than ours down in Trethomas

however!

The team play in black and amber and have started the league season with two

narrow defeats, losing 1 -0 on both occasions away at Tregaron and at home to

Four Crosses. Aberaeron‟s most notable success to date was when they lifted the

Emrys Morgan Cup in the 2002/2003 season and they will certainly provide a

tough test for the Spa Men.

Club NewsWe start with the extremely sad news that club

legend Phil Robinson passed away last week. A

short spell of illness claimed the life of a true

Llandrindod legend and the thoughts and best

wishes of all at the club are with his family.

Robbo was a giant amongst men, not for

his physical size but his sheer footballing

prowess. Held in high esteem by all who saw

and played with him, Robbo would be many

people‟s choice for the best player of his or

subsequent generations in local football. It was

his love of the game that rubbed off on both

his sons, with Carl still plying his trade in the

game playing for New York Red Bulls in the MLS

after claiming 52 Welsh caps and eldest son

Lee being a football agent after having a spell

as youth team coach at Cardiff City. It was

obviously in the genes.

As a mark of the huge respect Robbo

has at the club and in the town, we will have a

1 minute silence prior to kick off.

„Robbo‟ “In the mid 1970's, my schoolfriends' footballing heroes were the likes of Kevin Keegan, Kenny Dalgleish, Malcolm Macdonald and others. I was different. My footballing hero was not a millionaire superstar; he didn't have dozens of international caps; he didn't drive a Ferrari. No, my hero was a bricklayer from Llandod who drove a Mk 1 Cortina with "Robbo" on the sunstrip. Phil Robinson was

the most feared striker in the Mid Wales League. Hard running, combative and fearless on the pitch, with his long dark hair and flamboyant moustache he terrorised defenders from Aberystwyth to Welshpool. Perhaps Robbo's finest hour in my memory was the Mid Wales League Cup Final in May 1979. In a pulsating game, Llandod overcame Presteigne 3-2 with Robbofinding the back of the net twice.In these days of overpaid prima donna footballers, I am proud to be able to pay tribute to a 'real' footballer. A down-to earth man who loved the beautiful game and thrilled Llandod supporters week after week.

Robbo would have rightly been so proud of the fantastic careers his sons Lee

and Carl have forged for themselves, but the family can also be justly proud of Robbo - a true footballing hero.”

“My most poignant memories of Robbo are before he ever played for Llandod. As a first former at the grammar school we used to watch him play on the bottom yard at lunchtime and admire how good he was. When I started playing in the early seventies, the memory of him playing for Crossgates in their all orange kit with his dark hair halfway down his back and terrorising our defence and scoring goals for fun is something I will never forget.

It was an honour to have played in the same team as Robbo, he was the best

player of my generation who was equally as good at centre half or centre forward and who I would liken to John Charles, a gentle giant. We will all miss you Robbobut we will never forget you.”

I have made no secret over the years that in my opinion Robbowas a brilliant all round footballer and have continually told anyone who cared to listen that he could easily have played at the very top level should he have chosen to

take up the opportunities he was offered as a young man. He was a naturally fit athlete and could play in every central position on the pitch and was outstanding in which ever role he was asked to play. Of course most

football people will remember him as the Mario Kempeslookalike striker and scorer of so many goals.

Most importantly Robbo was a lovely man without enemies and it was a pleasure to be his friend. His family can be proud of everything he achieved and how he lived his life. The world will be a poorer place without this

Llandrindod youngsters come of age

Llandrindod Wells welcomed Bont F.C. for the first home

game of the newly formed Spar Mid Wales League Two.A fantastic crowd of 374 locals including the much revered“Blue Army” and members of Groundhoppers UK descended on the Broadway for the 6.30 Bank Holiday Sunday kick off.

The average age of the starting line up was a remarkable 19 ½ years with new signing, Paul Watson making his first start. For the majority of the first half, Bont found it difficult to cope with the pace, pressing, passing and movement of Llandrindod with Jonny Williams, Will Green and Robbie Nicholls the source of many good attacking moves. The best chance of the first half fell to Chris “Big Dog” Davies (above) after some incisive

play by Will Green and Jonny Williams down the left hand side of the field, the ball was pulled back to Chris who with an outstretched foot guided a shot which clipped the bar before sailing over.

At the other end of the field Shaun Nicholls and Michael Watkins quickly formed a strong defensive partnership coping well with the lively Bont attackers who were reduced to a few set piece chances. Bont started the second half a lot more brightly up the slope, although Llandrindod still looked dangerous on the break. An early shot from Chris Davies following a corner was expertly saved by the Bont Keeper who handled impressively throughout.

The deadlock was broken following a Llandrindod

attack that fizzled out just outside the Bont 18yard box. The opposition broke quickly down the left hand side of the field with the Bont Captain, Tristan Jones unleashing a 25 yard strike which nestled itself into the top right hand corner despite keeper, Adam Wright‟s efforts. Bont continued to control possession following the goal and started to press for a second. However, they found it difficult to break the shackles of the Llandrindod midfield, with Daryl Nicholls the youngest player on the pitch

at 16 putting in a tremendous performance.

It was left to Captain, Michael Watkins to round off an excellent individual and team performance with a well taken goal from a corner. Watkins with his back to goal brought the ball down on his chest before firing a powerful low strike into the bottom right hand corner.

First Team lose away at Rhosgoch

Llandrindod made their first away journey of the season to local rivals Rhosgoch who in the previousweek had put ten goals past Talgarth. It was Rhosgochwho made by far the better start with brothers, Geraintand Trefor Lloyd causing some serious problems withtheir pace and movement upfront, whilst their wingers were the source of many dangerous attacks in what wasone way traffic in the first twenty minutes.

Rhosgoch were to forge a two goal lead during this period of early pressure, the first goal arriving after a dangerous cross from the right hand side by Liam Jones which caused confusion in the box and Trefor Lloyd took the opportunity to bury a header into the roof of the net. The second came after the ball had broken down in midfield, Rhosgoch picked up the ball and launched another attack. The ball found its way to Trefor Lloyd on the edge of the box who rode a challenge and fired a right foot shot from 10 yards into the roof of the net.

Gradually the dod started to make their way into the game for the remainder of the second half as they came to terms with the pace of the game. Ben Jones replaced Huey Lewis, who

had to leave the field due to injury and he was to pick up his first goal of the with a trademark header from another excellent Will Green corner. Llandrindod then started to enjoy their best spell of the match with a number of half chances falling to Ben Jones and Jonny Williams before the half time whistle.

The second half started off very conservatively with neither side really doing much to get beyond their opponents until a long clearance caused problems for the Llandrindod defence and Liam Jones found himself in on goal. He was quickly brought down by Michael Watkins around 25 yards from goal when the defender really had no other option. The Rhosgochwinger stepped up to take the ensuing free kick and curled a sweet strike around the wall and into the bottom right hand corner of the net.

With half an hour still left on the clock the dodpushed for a second goal but Rhos still looked very dangerous on the break and could have added to their lead as the game opened up. Llandrindod also had heir chances with Shaun and Daryl Nicholls but the best chance fell to Ben Jones who played a one two on the edge of the box with Michael Watkins and fired a left foot volley agonisingly wide.

Llandrindod continued to press and the breakthrough finally came when Jonny Williams was brought down in the box and stepped up to score from the penalty spot in the ninetieth minute, but it was too little too late. Rhosgoch had kept up their 100% record and Llandrindod were left to rue their slow start which prevented them from getting a positive result.

Match Report Watson Assosiates Mid Wales League South – Saturday 4th September – 2.30pm

Saturday saw a disappointing result for the reserves who threw away a 2-1 lead with

15 minutes left in the game. A well struck goal from Presteigne put the visitors 1-0

up. This fired up the dod boys and Llandrindod bounced back quickly and got a

goal through Jimi Price after Presteigne struggled to clear the ball which Jimiproceeded to drill into the bottom left corner.

Jimi „the worm‟ Price then won a dubious penalty for Llandrindod towards the latter

stages of the second half which Peter Horne converted. Presteigne were angered

by the decision and subsequently had a player sent off for dissent towards the

referee. This, however, spurred the visitors on and duly raised their game to win

themselves a penalty. The decision was, again, debatable and was very nearly

saved by Sam Williams who was making his return to Llandrindod after playing for

bitter rivals Rhayader last season. But alas, Sam could only get his fingertips to the

ball and the visitors now had their tails up.

Llandrindod seemed to struggle with the sudden change of pace in the game and

Presteigne closed the game with 2 quick goals, the inexperience showing in the

young and weary legs of the dod players.

Heart will be taken from the initial performance however and although a tough

lesson to learn, the game may stand the young side in good stead for the rest of

the season.

THE BLUE ARMY (Llandrindod Wells Afc Fans)

The support given by the Blue Army two weeks ago wasa credit to the club and indeed the town. Kev Davies, aman who has been in and around the club since the early 70‟s could not get over the atmosphere at the ground. In all his years, he has never witnessed an atmosphere like we created that evening. Club treasurerShirley King is not a football fan but too was bowledover by the level of support we showed our team. Keep an eye out on our YouTube and facebook pages for a video of our days efforts! Arguably the best goalkeeper in the league last season, Adam is a great shot stopper which has been matched by some superb handling displays, particularly in two of the biggest games last season against Montgomery in the Emrys Morgan and Rhosgoch in the league.
