BIA CLAY SHOOT

BBQ LUNCH

The annual BIA Clay Shoot was held Saturday, August 29 at Hermitage Farms in Camden. Over 30 members and guests participated in the event. Big thanks to Roy’s Wood Products for sponsoring the shoot this year!

We’d also like to thank C&C Builders of Columbia for sponsoring the lunch and Ed Byrd of SIC for providing the food.

A Saturday morning shoot means cooler temperatures and higher scores. Ken Queen’s ERA Wilder Realty team took top honors in the shoot. Ken is a longtime supporter of the BIA affordable housing efforts in Kershaw County and is grooming his son, Cameron, to walk in those same shoes… a WIN for the building industry.

Chandler Coggeshall from Home Pest Control is an example of the sporting spirit of the day. He had the highest indi-vidual score and appears to have been very happy about that. More fi rst time shooters joined us this year, and it was great to have many father/son pairs. We hope you’ll join us in August 2016 for the next BIA Clay Shoot.

Immediately following the Clay Shoot was a BBQ Lunch for the shooters and elected offi cials from Kershaw, Sumter and Clarendon Counties. We were very happy to have elected offi cials from the area at the event.

BIA Members visited Washington, D.C. and several elected offi cials this June. The annual trip to the Nation’s Capital took 27 members and staff to meet with offi cials and talk about what’s important to the building industry professionals in South Carolina. Thanks to everyone who

made the trip, and a big thanks to the sponsors who made it possible!

AUGUST BIA MEMBERSHIP MEETING

The membership of the BIA of Central SC met in August for lunch at Seawell’s. We awarded the 14th annual Columbia Remodelers Awards at this meeting and our guest was US Senator Tim Scott.

The meeting was sponsored by Allied Air Enterprises, Lowe’s ProServices and Columbia Metropolitan Magazine.

Sen. Scott got the meeting

off to a quick start as he

talked about various issues

facing our state and nation, and

how he is representing the people

of South Carolina. After speaking,

Sen. Scott took some questions for

the audience and then was on his

way to another meeting.

We took time to recognize Spar-

ty Hammett, Assistant Administra-

tor of Richland County, as he is

retiring later this year. Sparty has

been a great resource to our mem-

bers and the building industry over

his time with the county. We rec-

ognized his work with the Cham-

pion of Housing Award.

Columbia City Councilman

Cameron Runyon is running for re-

election. He was at the meeting

to accept a campaign contribution

and endorsement from the BIA.

We were fortunate to have a

great group of new members in Before he left, Sen. Scott accepted an SC Build PAC donation

presented by Eddie Yandle and Dottie LaFitte.

attendance at this meeting. We

called their names and brought

them to the front of the room for

a picture (see page 12). Wel-

come New Members! Thanks to

everyone who works to bring new

members into the organization.

Those who bring in six or more

are known as SPIKES. We hon-

ored a few members who recently

became SPIKES or reached new

levels in the SPIKE Club. Thanks

for all you do to help grow the as-

sociation!

Finally, we had Henry Clay,

publisher of Columbia Metropol-

itan Magazine, at the meeting

as sponsor of the 14th annual

Columbia Remodelers Awards.

He announced the winners of the

awards and brought copies of the

September issue of his magazine

which featured the winners. See

more on page 12 of this publica-

tion.

August Membership MeetingThe council membership met at Seawell’s in August for a meet-

ing. Our guest speaker was council member Claude St. Hilaire of Home Energy Group. We asked Claude to give a talk about moisture in wall cavities and the different types of insulation. These two items are very important elements of new home construction, and deciphering all of the available information can be diffi cult. Thanks to Claude for making it a lot easier to understand.

Meeting Sponsor:

Solar Tour and MixerAlso in August, council members were invited to a Solar Tour of

the Columbia Museum of Art, and then to a Mixer at the local AIA Chapter Offi ce. The two meetings were presented by the High Performance Building Council, the Columbia AIA Chapter and the USGBC Midlands Chapter, and we had a great turnout from all three groups.

The Columbia Museum of Art has a solar array located on the roof of the Main St. structure. We heard from the engineers who designed and installed the system, then took a tour to the mechan-ical room and then onto the roof itself.

Following the tour, we traveled across Main Street to the new AIA Offi ce for drinks, hors d’oeuvres and networking.

September Membership MeetingThe council met once again in September at Seawell’s. Our

sponsor and speaker this time was Water Furnace International. The company specializes in geothermal systems. They gave a very informative talk on the subject and answered questions from those present.

Keep an eye on the calendar of events at www.BIAofCentralSC.com and our Facebook page for more upcoming meetings and events.
