Alcohol Awareness Week events began with the placement of250 flags on the Brottier Commons lawn, in memory of thenumber of American who lose their lives each week in car accidentsinvolving drunk driving. Other events included a mocktail mix-off,where students created a non-alcohol drink, gave it a clever name, and a presentation to the judges. The goal was to show studentsthey could create tasteful, non-alcohol drinks that could be servedat a party for guests who choose not to consume alcohol. Thisevent was a collaboration of the DU CARES office, Office ofResidence Life, Office of Greek Life, and the AutomobileAssociation of America (donated trophies to the winners in allthree categories—best taste, most creative name, and bestoverall presentation).

An information fair with representatives from the PA DUIAssociation, State Police, County Police, City Police, DuquesnePublic Safety and PLCB all provided valuable information tostudents. A dinner was held for the members of GAMMA(Greeks Advocating the Mature Management of Alcohol) whichincluded a speaker who had been driving after a night of drinkingand caused an accident that resulted in the loss of the life of

another driver. Sixty-three students attended dinner and heardthis insightful presentation.

A powerful “mock trial” was conducted on an alcohol facilitatedphysical encounter—was it consensual contact or not? A localmagistrate presided over the case while two third-year lawstudents represented the prosecution and defense sides of thecase. Twelve student members of the audience were chosento be the jury, complete with the experience of deliberating basedon the merits of the case as presented. Over 80 students attendedthis experiential program.

The Brothers of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity hosted a kickballgame in the Power Center on campus with students encouragedto attend the Residence Life late night “scary movie” programafter the tournament.

A lot of information was shared and presented in a variety ofmodalities to make our Duquesne students and community awareof some of the risks and consequences of illegal, underage, andhazardous consumption of alcohol.
