Blur - Coffee and
TV
Genre characteristicsBritpop would be the genre of this music video. This can be spotted by seeing the location of London. London can be recognised right
from the beginning of the video as we are able to see the milk carton on a bright red post box. Britpop is classed to be an outer-suburban,
middle class fantasy of central London street life, with exclusive metropolitan models.
Lyrics and visualsThe lyrics and the visuals have a very strong relationship within this
video. This can be seen/heard by these lyrics and the visuals;
‘To people who never really care how you are’ – the carton walks out the door
‘Take me away from this big bad world’ – the carton goes off
with the biker.
‘And you can’t find the door’ – the Carton knocks on the wrong door.
‘And agree to marry me’ – The carton is walking towards the female carton with hearts in his eyes
Music and visualsAs the alley way gets darker and more frightening the music also gets rather dark and moody. Most of the visuals are rather slow pace, this is
where we can see the relationship between the slow pace visuals and the mellow music. When the Milk carton goes to heaven the music pace does
not change, however, it turns rather happy.
Demands of the record labelThe band is rather well known and there for they only get seen by the end of the song. The fact of this can be also seen as one of the band
members shifts away from the others by taking the carton of milk outside.
Notion of lookingPoint of view has been used by the very end as the carton looks at the band through the window, the audience get the same view as well as
the carton of milk.
Inter textual referenceWhile the milk carton walks through a dark alley a green glowing
object can be spotted, this could be referenced to any Science-fiction movie.
