Step

back in

time We’ve been doing a bit of digging in the

archives to find out more about the history

of Blacktown Hospital, and we’ve come a

long way since 1965.

Thanks to Peter Zelas Library manager

Kathleen McMillan for her help to unearth

some gems from the past.

Front page

Peter Zelas Library manager Kathleen with the first annual report from 1966.

According to media reports, “in the late 1940s getting hospital treatment was difficult because the hospital site was still pastoral land”. A public meeting was held in 1956 to discuss the need for a hospital.

The original hospital building entry in 1967. It was located where Building C is now.

A newspaper clipping of nursing unit manager Margrit Fleck outside the “new” birthing centre in 1991. The building is now the ACAT/TACP service, located next to the Admin/Regional Dialysis Centre Building.

First director of nursing Erella Macaulay (second from the left) at her farewell in 1990 after 25 years of service.

Jenny clocks up a

major milestone

We celebrated FF&E queen Jenny’s 60th birthday this week with

lunch, flowers and cake (of course).

After 45 years in nursing (seven of them with the project team),

she’s practically a hospital fixture herself. Jenny is celebrating

with some hard-earned time off, enjoying a comedy cruise

holiday.

Jenny said the highlight of her long career has been spending

time with people at the critical time in their life.

“Being with people at a time of birth and death, during their

recovery - when they are most fragile - has been a privilege,”

Jenny said.

“I’ve also loved the management side of nursing, and the project

work.

“It’s satisfying knowing you are making a difference for the

future. People may not be able to see it straight away, but you

know the work you're doing now will benefit them long after

the project is over.” Saying it with flowers - we love you, Jenny!

It wouldn’t be Blacktown without cake

Spotlight on: ICU

Level 5 of the new building is for intensive care. At the entry, a comfortable

waiting area, colourful murals and a bright reception make families and friends

feel welcome. Inside, patients, visitors and staff have access to an outdoor

terrace, and all the patient rooms have district or courtyard views.

On level 5, Annelise Rees’ distinctive lift lobby murals feature life in the oceans
