The Embassy of the Czech Republic invites you to the lecture Cuban Transformation International Perspective with Martin Palou, former Czech Ambassador to the US and the UN.

Participants will also have the opportunity to view photographs from the book Cuba in Details by Michal Cihl? andVeronika Richterov. The book received the Best Photographic Publication Award in 2006.

The event is part of the project Democracy and Human Rights: Lessons from the Past for the Current Czech ForeignPolicy, organized by the Embassy of the Czech Republic from January through June 2011.

Martin Palou served as the Czech Ambassador to the United Nations from 2006-2011. Prior to taking office at theUN, he presided as the Czech Ambassador to the United States from 2001-2005. He was also a founding member of

the Civic Forum and one of the first signers of Charter 77.

He joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as an adviser to Minister Dienstbier and was Deputy Minister of ForeignAffairs from October 1990 to October 1992. In October 1998, he became Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the

Czech Republic. He has le ctured extensively in the United States. Palou has held a number of teaching positions at Charles University since 1990. He became a member of the Faculty of Social Sciences (Foreign Relations Division)in 1994, and served for some time as the Faculty's Vice-Dean. In 1993, he joined the Centre for Theoretical Studies(a research center run jointly by Charles University and the Czech Academy of Sciences, headed by Ivan M. Havel).

Palou is the author of numerous publications and translated the works of Hann ah Arendt.

Rizal Sukma is the executive director of the Center for Strategic and InternationalStudies, Jakarta and has worked extensively on Southeast Asian security issues,Indonesia's defense and foreign policies, as well as domestic political change inIndonesia. He has also served as a member of the National Committee on StrategicDefense Review at the Ministry of Defense, the Republic of Indonesia, and as amember of the National Drafting Committee for the National Defence Bill (2000-2001)and the Armed Forces Bill (2002-2003). Dr. Sukma, a former Fulbright visiting fellow,

also became the first Indonesian to receive the Nakasone Award in July of 2005.Additionally, he was named one of "100 Top Global Thinkers" by Foreign Policymagazine in 2009. Dr. Sukma received his PhD degree in international relations fromthe London School of Economics and Political Science.

A year ago, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation announced its "America Healing" initiative, a five-year, $75 million program ofgrants focusing on bringing healing to divided communities and bridging racial gaps in the areas of education, health,juvenile justice, economic s uccess, the media, and other areas.

Writing in NCRPs Responsive Philanthropy , Dr. Gail Christopher, Kelloggs vice president for program strategy, notedthat the initiative reflects a belief that our racialized social and opportunity structures have g enerated and continue togenerate two consistent outcomes: privilege for some, and obstacles, pain and suffering for others. Acknowledging thisfact, however painful, is the beginning of the healing process. In mandating that the W.K. Kellogg Foundatio n become

an effective anti- racist organization, she wrote, the foundations board of trustees acknowledged both the implicitbenefits of white privilege and the foundations obligation to be responsive to the needs produced by centuries of structural rac ism.

Kelloggs announcement was viewed skeptically by Stephan Thernstrom, Winthrop Research Professor of History atHarvard University. Writing for the Wall Street Journal , he asked What evidence convinced Kellogg that racism is such aclear-and-present danger to the children of America today? Foundation officials point to racial and ethnic disparities. . . .But is it self- evident that these economic and educational differences are simply or even largely the consequences of racism?

Parish Gallery will be hosting the opening reception of "Roots of Hope" by Gabonese painter GeorgesM'Bourou. Known for his unique and instantly recognizable style of oil on canvas, which incorporates vibrantcolor combinations and explores different textures through paint layering, dripping and scraping, M'Bourou'spaintings are essentially a quest into the mystery of light. M'Bourou's work has appeared in many exhibitionsinternationally and he has received numerous prizes, notably in 2005 when he was selected to represent Africaat the Universal Exhibition in Aichi, Japan. "Roots of Hope" will be showing at Parish Gallery throughTuesday, May 17.

The global economic crisis that began in 2008 continues to roil international politics and markets. Montenegro's FinanceMinister will provide a policy-maker's perspective on how his country is addressing the situation. Additionally, he will

Milorad Katnic has served as Montenegro's Finance Minister since 2010. Still Time to See Smithsonian Exhibit Cyprus:Crossroa ds of Civilizations

If you havent had the chance to see Cyprus: Crossroads of Civilizations on exhibit at the SmithsoniansNational Museum of Natural History, 10th Street and Constitution Avenue NW , theres still time.

For the next month, you can see objects from Cyprus nearly 11,000 -year history. Artifacts includesphinxes, an Aphrodite marble sculpture and one of the earliest known pet cats in the world. In fact, thisis the first time many of the objects have ever been on view, ever.

As a part o f the exhibit, the Smithsonian is hosting a lecture, Aphrodite: Goddess of Cyprus,April 20, 6:45-9:00 p.m. The evening lecture will investigate the nature and origin of this alluringand alarming goddess.

Please join the SID-Washington Gender in Development Workgroup for a panel discussion on "The HiddenRole of Gender in Food Security & Value Chain Development."

Investing in agricultural development has long been recognized as one of the best ways to reduce povertyin the long term, whether the goal is to feed individual families or to help economies grow. In addition,research has shown that women in developing countries carry out much of the work with agricultural cropsand production. Women are also more likely to use income from these activities for food, healthcare andeducation for their children, helping lift entire communities out of poverty and achieve sustainableeconomic growth.

This panel will focus on successful value chain strategies, particularly those involving women, to boostincome and achieve food security. Specific interventions, success stories and private sector alliances willbe discussed in the context of capacity building, access to markets, quality standards and post-harvesthandling.

Art Gallery & Interior Design

Our first exhibit in our new space, Hidden Images , presents abstract artwork rich in variousinterpretations. Local artists challenge viewers to find unseen symbols, storylines, images, andmeanings within their work. The exhibit runs from Monday, April 4, 2011 to Saturday, May 7, 2011.

HYATTSVILLE, MD (04-11-11) -When we moved into our space located withinthe Lustine Center, many passer-bys thought our gallery had closed.However, things are not always what they seem. Our new space is part of anexciting gallery collaboration where we will host and co-host exhibitsalongside of artdc. Our first exhibit, Hidden Images , invites viewers to take asecond glance, peel away layers: both optical and metaphorical, and ask the question: What do you really see and why?

In any form of art, each individual has the potential to see somethingdifferent. Art's power is in its ability to affect the soul, to summon memory, topromote dialogue, and communicate visually what cannot be described inany other way. Art has the ability to manipulate, to control, and to transform.

Often the desire to see a single concept, a single identifiable subject, a single answer is an initial response toart. With Hidden images we invite viewers to closely examine each work and find multiple meanings. Workswithin this exhibit will require and motivate viewers to take a more concentrated and in-depth look at eachpiece. The artwork is meant to communicate a deeper meaning than what is initially interpreted. HiddenImages contains abstract work with dual-meaning which is illustrated via optical illusion, satire, layering, etc.truly indulging the viewer's imagination.

Selected works for Hidden Images were juried by Justin Fair, Abigail Hunt, and Erica Riggio.

About Riggio DesignErica Riggio, founder of Riggio Design, has over a decade of design experience. Ms. Riggio earned her Master's of Fine Arts in Interior Design from The George Washington University. She also attended MICA, Maryland Institute College of Art, in Baltimore and received acertificate in Architectural and Interior Design Studies.

Creating chic, stream-lined, timeless, and comfortable spaces define their aesthetic. Riggio Design is equally dedicated to historicalpreservation. Their awareness and respect of historic structures are recognized by their efforts to seamlessly and strategically blend thehistoric with the new. Riggio Design is dedicated to providing good design within everyone's reach. Their commitment to the

environment is strong. Principles of green design are encouraged and incorporated, when possible, in their design plans.

Their most recent venture is a collaborative effort called 5710Creative: a creative design studio. Riggio Design, part of 5710Creative, islocated within historic The Lustine Center at 5710 Baltimore Ave., Hyattsville, MD.
