President’s Message

Ich kann das nicht verstehen !!!

By Phillip Nerandzic

As the riding season is winding down for many of us, there are still some events to enjoy. Our annual “Holiday Party” is slated for Saturday evening January 14th at American Legion Post 572, 6483 State Rd. Parma OH. Festivities begin at 6:00 PM; dinner will be served at 7:00 PM.

Food, prizes, awards, and plenty of laughter and mer-riment will be had by all. Come one, come all, and join in the fun. The menu and pricing are still to be determined, so please check the website for updates as they become available.

Also in January, the International Motorcycle Show is at the IX Center. We will again be gathering for break-fast and carpooling from Gene’s Place at 3730 Rocky River Drive, Cleveland. Have some eats and join with your friends for a short ride to the show to scope out those newest farkles that you’ve just got to get.

In March, we will once again be gathering for our an-nual “Rock-n-Bowl” at Fairview Lanes, 21847 Lorain Rd. Fairview OH. Come make a fool of yourself like so many of us, or better still show us how it should be done. Date, time, and details will be forthcoming. Please check the website for more information.

Our fall gathering, now “Oktoberfest”, was loads of fun. The food was great, plentiful, and authentic and the “oompah” music really set the tone. This version of our fall event seems to be a keeper. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone at next year’s reprise of what is sure to become a “classic”!!

Thanks also to Pat Corrigan for plotting and leading a ride that had so many turns and directional changes that I’m glad I was in the middle of the pack. If I were to have gotten separated, I’m sure I would have had absolutely no idea of where I was. Well not entirely, I knew I was still in Ohio. In any event it was a very fun ride, even though I left at the lunch stop to oversee the dinner preparations. Of course my presence was not needed, due to the diligence of my wife Nancy, and Diane Boehmerle, who flawlessly put everything

together like consummate pros!! Also, thanks are in order to Cheryl Fallis for the wonderful breakfast Sat-urday morning, aided so ably by Nancy Simpson and Troy Todd.

And a very special "atta boys & girls" to Nancy Simp-son, Anne Pence, and Troy Todd for their tireless work in cleaning up our mess once the gorging was done. I also need to thank Bill Stinson for once again carting all of our “stuff” to the events. If there is any-one I’ve forgotten to thank, I sincerely apologize. The oversight is purely due to the fact that my brain cells seem to be on vacation without me. Seriously, these things don’t just happen on their own. It’s the work of those “doers” who sacrifice their time and efforts so that we “enjoyers” may do just that.

On October the 15th I woke up to a brisk and breezy morning to start off our poker run. After picking up my grandson Camren in Brunswick we headed to New Philadelphia to begin the poker run. We were met there by Don Walker. Right at the cutoff time for bikes out we were joined by Mick Skowronsky. So our in-trepid foursome proceeded to try our luck with excep-tional odds for winning the $100 prize. I thought that for once I might have a shot at winning, but alas it was not to be as Don Walker pulled out a straight to beat Camren’s two pair. Congratulations Don, you lucky stiff! But all in all, I had a wonderful day riding with my friends and my grandson. It was even his milestone day spent in the saddle, logging 250 miles even if he did sleep through some of it. Next year I’ll try my nonexistent luck once again.

On a more somber note, we were all saddened by the tragic loss by the McClennan clan of young Reid Al-len McClennan at the tender age of 15 months. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire McClennan family at this most difficult time. I know they appreci-ated your kind words, prayers, and generosity.

On a lighter note congratulations to Dominic Cioffi on achieving his 200,000 mile award as well as a new Triple Black GS. I’m envious!

As always Ride Safe and Ride Often!!

Your President, Phillip Nerandzic

Hakim Ali

I am 46 years old, married, with 4 kids ages 17, 14, 12, and a son 7 years old. We have lived in Westlake for over 5 years and N. Olmsted before that for the previous 15 yrs. The family and I are very active in playing ten-nis, and enjoying the out-doors.

I have worked in Cleveland as an accountant for over 15 years and have my own company that specializes in individual and business income tax returns. I go by my actual name Hakim (pronounced Hi Kem).

I have not had much of an opportunity to ride, other than to visit friends in Columbus and De-troit. I ride my BMW to work as often as I can. By the way, I ride a 2001 K1200LT that has over 45,000 miles on it, so I guess I have put some miles on, but not nearly as many as I would have hoped by now. I have had some sort of a motor-cycle for as long as I can remember. I used to ride a Honda VF1000R cafe racer, but then I got married and riding that bike didn’t seem to be the w ises t move when raising a f am i l y . T h e K1200LT is by far the largest and heaviest bike that I have ever owned.

I purchased it in 2002 for long dis-tance cruising but family and work have some-how limited that plan.

I look forward to being part of Cleveland BMW

club and meeting everyone first hand.

Mark Trigalet

My nickname is Trig. I live in Lorain with my two boys Zack, 16 and AJ, 14. I work in inside sales at Tyco Fire Products in Parma. We sell and dis-tribute sprinkler heads and other things for fire protection.

My bike is a 2000 R1100R. I bought it last year with the BMW hard bags and windshield.

It is similar to my last BMW, a red 1991 K75S. I sold that one when I got married and bought a house.

My brother and I rode to Indianapolis in August to the MotoGP race and had a great time. We also rode to the Vintage motor-cycle event in Wauseon, Ohio in July. We saw so many vintage motor-cycles. It was fantastic and I would recommend it to any motor-cycle enthusiast.

I was in the Navy from 1982 – 1986, on a de-

stroyer out of San Diego. I have been to Hawaii,

Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Philippines, and

Australia.

The Four Winds RallyThe Four Winds RallyThe Four Winds RallyThe Four Winds Rally. Who hasn’t heard of, or at-tended, at least one of the rallies? They have been sponsored annually for the last 45 years by a group of awesome members. It is the longest continuous running BMW Rally in the US. Year after year, they provide great camping, dinners, rides, as well as motorcycle events and the making of friendships. Year after year, we look forward to seeing the friends we’ve made over the years, catching up with their travels and on their lives. Year after year, it’s a place we feel comfortable, knowing the next few days will be a reunion of good times and good

memories will be made.

This year was no different than the others, except

we more readily accepted the daily rainstorms that have become a part of our lives while traveling. Af-ter arriving at camp and setting up the homestead for a few nights’ camping, it was back out on the back roads to visit some wineries. The initial plan for a cadre of club members was to go tubing on the Red Bank River, a trip some of us did two years ago. Seems this year the river rats were moving their offices so no trips were available. With a big disappointment hanging in the air, Carl & Rosemary Bork, Bob Beason, and I decided to hit some winer-ies to bring back our ablutions for the evening. The day was sunny and warm, and the roads lumpy, bumpy, and pot-holed for our arrival at each of the establishments. There wasn’t a winery we visited that was not at least a mile off the main road on a gravel surface, or had pavement turned gravely for parking purposes. We rode an LT and RT on what seemed like a GS backroads’ course, experiencing

a few bottom-touching moments.

Back at camp with Happy Hour before, during, and

after our dinner, I enjoyed the company of Bill Stinson, Jerry & Mary Riha, Rick & Christopher Ses-sions, Don Poremski, Don Beal, Paul Eschenhauser, Carl & Rosemary Bork, and Bob Beason from the

BMWMOC.

As if on cue, the rains returned Sunday morn-i n g a b o u t 6:30am, just in time for every-one waking up and packing up wet. The ride home was very intense, as the storms shown their most ugly side, visibility at times no more than 50 feet. Occasional slight panic ensued, but I kept it together as one string of storms was left behind only to encounter

another batch farther down the road.

If you haven’t had a chance to attend a Four Winds Rally, put it on your calendar of events for next year.

You won’t be disappointed.

This truly has been challenging year weather wise for riding and rallies. We are a very diverse group of people, and riding our ride in inclement weather is part of who we all are. We may not like it, but we tolerate it well to be on the road. The riding season is winding down, but there are still many good riding days before the white fluffy stuff falls. Enjoy and I

hope to see you out riding.

Not many of us are moving around at 5:30 in the morn-ing, but Saturday September the 24th found three mem-bers of BMWMOC hanging around downtown Akron just waiting for sunrise – and the start of this year’s Road Runner Akron Marathon, Half Marathon & Novo Nordisk Team Relay . Paul Koontz, Rick Sessions, and Roger Pivonka once again volunteered to provide transporta-

tion for coverage of the 8th running of this well-run event.

Paul provided transportation for Nelsen Petersen of KIBO productions for filming of this rapidly growing event. Roger’s passenger, Dave Schrader, was provid-ing live on-course radio coverage of the Women’s Mara-thon and Rick rode around with Paul Organ to provide live on-course coverage of the Men’s event to the an-

nouncing crew at the finish line in Akron Aeros Stadium.

Over 15,000 athletes faced the challenge of a course that rolled across the infamous Al l -American Y-Bridge and then turned back to-wards downtown to pass by the recently com-pleted student apart-ment/retail complex. We rode by the construction site of the Bridgestone Tire Research Center and

the Firestone Stadium of Women’s fast-pitch softball fame. The course proceeded through the neighborhoods of Firestone Park and we were entertained by “garage” bands on the way to Akron U’s new Infocision Stadium. Spectators filled the sidewalks as the athletes ran through the Akron University Campus and passed by the Inventors Hall of Fame and school as they headed for the Northside Lofts and the Mustil Store. Here the course proceeded on the Towpath Trail and wound it’s way through Sand Run Park and the infamous “river” crossing and then on to the beautiful Stan Hywett Man-sion. We circled the Fairlawn Country Club and travelled through the fine older neighborhoods of Akron before leading the race winners back to the finish line inside

the Akron Aeros Stadium.

For 26.2 miles we got to run red lights, totally ignore stop signs, and ride the wrong way on one way streets. The Akron Police just stood back and smiled as all just

rode around having a great time. We watched as the lead runners “floated” over the city streets on the way to a new course record. On course video filled the score-board screen as our passengers provided real-time on-course updates to the thousands waiting at the finish

line inside the Akron Aeros Stadium.

This is the sixth year that

BMWMOC has been in-

volved and Wally Gin-

grich, Mike Sikora, Mar-

sha Beford, and Arp

Viberg have helped out in

past events. Race Direc-

tor Jim Barnett has been

impressed by the profes-

sional attitude and the

safety record of these

BMWMOC riders. Satur-

day, September 24, 2011

was be the 8th running of

this fast-growing event.

Last year we provided 3 bikes to cover 13,000 athletes.

This year the event grew to 15,000 runners. It is a really

fun time - maybe you’ll join us next year?

On a cool dreary October weekend hearty BMWMOC members found their way to the oft visited B&B in Potter County Pennsylvania. From

their website: http://www.susquehannock-lodge.com/

“A perfect place for you to enjoy the quiet setting of Pennsylvania's Northwoods... a special place where there are more deer than peo-ple... where gentle breezes, babbling brooks and the song of the wood thrush interrupt the quiet in symphonic harmony... where the

mountains seem to

touch the sky.

Here in Potter County, PA, "God's Country", we can help you to discover the quiet, scenic se-crets, the hundreds of miles of hiking trails, the area festivals and recreational activities... for a vacation you will cherish without having

to spend a fortune.”

Our cozy group enjoyed the camaraderie and fel-lowship of our moto inter-ests. The late autumn colors of the Grand Can-yon of PA, the Factory Store of Woolrich, Inc., the deer infested local trails that required fluorescent garb for our nature lover/hikers due to bow & muz-zle loading season, the quaint shops and the Wellsboro DINER, resulted in a great get-a-way week-end. Also, a new meaning to SPOONING was discov-ered during the intimate games of the evening

hours.

A s w i t h p r e v i o u s BMWMOC visits, the Satur-day prime rib dinner was as big as Darwin’s shoe

and much tastier!

The journey home culmi-nated in a three bear cub sight-ing with a photo of only a poste-rior to verify the

event.

Harley-Davidson Inc. is recalling about 308,000 motorcycles, 251,000 of which in the United States.

The reason for the recall is a defective switch that can cause brake lights failure and even rear brakes failure. In documents filed with the Na-tional Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the company explains that failure of the switches comes from their overexposure to the heat of the exhaust system.

According to those documents, the exhaust heat can also cause fluid leaks and eventual loss of rear brakes.

The brake problem affects motorcycles built be-tween June 6, 2008 and Sept. 16, 2011. The af-fected motorcycle models are 2009-2012 Tour-ing, CVO Touring and Trike. If you are one of the owners, Harley will notify you of the recall and arrange a dealer to install non-defective, free brake light switch.

The problem with the brakes was noticed in June 2010 with reports of a Trike that lost its rear brakes and a motorcycle crash in Louisiana But since July 2010, there haven’t been any reports of the problem. The recall will cost $10 million to $12 million—a big expense for the fourth quarter of 2011.

The original designer of our logo and current mem-ber, Terry Taggert, has offered a BMW compliant re-vision to his original design. The officers & Board of Directors have discussed the club participation in re-viewing the other “partial designs” recently presented at club meetings but agreed that since Terry was the original designer he should have the 1st right of re-fusal in submitting a new BMW Club logo.

As you have seen his graphic design on the front page, the representative of BMWMOA has condition-ally approved the design and has forwarded it on to BMW Clubs International Council for final review and acceptance.

Let’s Have More!

By Paul Mitchell

It’s almost a year since my CCN partner Robin Bova ”retired” from the responsibility of creating four PROFESSIONAL issues a year of The Cleveland Club News, CCN. I had the mere responsibility of “shaking the trees” for articles from members, scouring the Internet for fill-ins, humor and supporting graphics and then presenting “Bin” with a CD and instructions for Front Page and modest artistic contributions and then final back & forth editing for a publication pdf.. What I did not realize at was the time that it takes to produce these issues. Yes, we did receive proposals from two commercial firms and the costs ranged from $1,400 to $2,000 for four issues annually- still with the BMWMOC editor’s assistance.

This proposed solution was not feasible so it was decided that I would take a stab at the graphic lay-out with a different software package. What you have seen has been the result of these circum-stances.

Thanks to:

• Phil Nerandzic for his President's column

• Wally Gingerich for his “New Member” contributions

• Don Poremski’s journalistic contributions and musings of life in general

• Mike Sikora for his coverage of the annual Akron Marathon

• Judy Gau, George Lopez & Larry Cardo for their Road & Rally experiences

• Pat Corrigan & George for their great photography

• Roger Pivonka for his 2011 travelogues to Eastern Europe and South America

We have 130+ members and need more contributions. No $$, just your ideas and stories about Beemer riding! Saddle up and pony up and help make CCN a really great newsletter!
