SummaryEngineered from the outset to be “the same, only better” the construction is fully aluminium,
rather than the steel construction of its predecessor. This has resulted in a full vehicle
weight reduced by 420kg (the equivalent of 5 adult occupants) with improved strength
and with improved performance, fuel economy and emissions. It has also been developed
for hybrid powertrains.

Range Rover (L405)
Structure:The body structure of the new Range Rover is 88% aluminium pressings; predominantly 5000 (37%) and 6000 (37%) series materials, but also including some cast aluminium components. Press Hardened Steel accounts for a mere 1% of the structure; the rivets!
Steel has however been used for braces in the engine compartment and for the rear C-post area, as well as for the door and bonnet hinges.
As much as 50% of the aluminium material is sourced from recycled supplies, but the big benefit is in the 29% reduction of components required for the body in white.
The body-side, of AC170PX laser-cut aluminium, is one piece; the largest aluminium car panel ever pressed. This alone is the result of 2 years research by JLR and results in further weight savings.
The front panel and the instrument panel beam are both of magnesium, as used by JLR on the XJ series and the Discovery. The subframes are aluminium too, saving 14kg each, and SMC plastic is used for the upper tailgate panel.
Ac300T61 6000 series alloy (approximately 225MPa) has been used for the front and rear chassis legs; this material saving weight and production cost, yet absorbing 30% more impact force than NG series aluminium. This material is also more resistant to cracking and crash performance can be more accurately predicted.
Aluminium castings have been used for rigidity in areas such as the front suspension turret and rear chassis legs making for better integration by using less panels. The roof includes two roll-formed aluminium roof bars; a first for Land Rover.
Joining methods is mostly by rivets, for better repairability, but the body also includes 160 metres of adhesive bonding. This has resulted in a considerable energy saving in production as it saves the equivalent of 7000 spot welds.
Friction Stir Welding (manufacturing only) has been restricted to the subframe mounts, and used for production efficiency.
DEVELOPED ON THE JLR LIGHTWEIGHT VEHICLE ARCHITECTURE, AS SEEN WITH
THE JAGUAR XK RANGE, ANNUAL PRODUCTION ESTIMATES ARE AROUND 36,000
VEHICLES. MANUFACTURING JOINING METHODS INCLUDE SPR’S (SELF PIERCING
RIVETS), BONDING, AND FRICTION STIR WELDING

Technology:JLR have patented their use of the aluminium floor cavities as a sub-woofer chamber for the sound system.
Dynamic Stability Control is standard on all; reducing engine torque and individual braking of each wheel to control and correct understeer or oversteer. This system is employed to control and adjust the driver’s brake application for cornering stability (known as Cornering Brake Control). This suite of systems also includes Electronic Traction Control to reduce excess torque to individual wheels.
The new Range Rover introduces the new Terrain Response2 system that monitors external driving conditions and autonomously adapts suspension, ride height, and DSC systems.
The Roll Stability Control system utilises ABS and engine torque control to avoid the vehicle rolling over.
Active Cruise Control with Intelligent Emergency Braking is an AEB system fitted as standard on Vogue SE and Autobiography.
Trim levels :Vogue: Standard alloy wheels are 20” 5 split-spoke and the interior is leather with powered seats. The driver’s seat has a memory function. There is a ‘meridian’ music system with 380W output as standard.
Vogue SE: Again the 20” 5 split-spoke wheels are standard. The interior is upgraded by both front seats having memory functions.
Autobiography: Recognisable by the bright chrome grille, the Autobiography also gets 21” 10 spoke alloy wheels as standard. Front and rear seats are climate controlled and there is a panoramic roof as standard.
Options:The roof panel can be body coloured, or a contrast colour is an option. Panoramic roofs are available too, with option of contrast colour (Indus Silver, Santorini Black).
There are two accent packs:Dark Access Pack 3 changes front and rear bumper accents, the door and front wing & wing vent accents and door mirror upper cover to Dark Atlas colour
Dark Access Pack 4 is as above, but without wing vent accent changes.
Range Rover (L405)
These are the primary colour choices, though there are many other premium colour options for the Autobiography range. The options prices are £6000 or £8000, but this is relative to a base price of £87,895 for the Autobiography.

ACTIONS... Thatcham are considering a research project on this vehicle very soon.
Engine line up:New to the range is the 3.0 TDV6 with parallel sequential turbo charging, and stop/start technology.
Transmission is through an 8 speed automatic gearbox with selection either by a console mounted rotary switch, or by paddle-shift controls on the steering wheel.
3.0 TDV6 diesel 258bhp 600Nm torque
4.4 SDV8 diesel 339bhp 700Nm torque
LR-V8Supercharged 5.0 petrol 510bhp 625Nm torque
As you’d expect with a prestige vehicle such as this, there is a number of combinations of interior trim colour options. The basic colour combinations are listed below, but with such a choice of exterior colours available, for good taste not all options are available with all exterior colours.
Alternative headlining colours can be specified from the colour options below, but again, not all are allowed. There is also 3 choices of finishing trim: Walnut, Macassar, or Black Lacquer.
