    Survey

Ever since the 1930s when George Gallup developed the most important problem (MIP) poll, scores o polling agencies, research centers, media outlets, and other organizations have askedMIP questions o literally hundreds o thousands i not millions o respondents. The surveysare most o ten conducted by such reputable organizations as the National Opinion ResearchCenter (NORC) at the University o Chicago, the Survey Research Center at the Universityo Michigan, and by private organizations such as Roper, Harris, and the Gallup organization.Today, Most Important Problem or MIP polls are a staple o the polling industry. The resultso such polls provide good odder or television news broadcasters, or would-be politicians onthe stump, and or humanitarian and other non-pro t organizations seeking unding or justi ca-tion or their programs. Here is an example o a recent CBS MIP poll soliciting opinions romresidents in the USA:

This particular poll was open-ended; that is, it allowed respondents to say whatever they wanted, and their answers were subsequently categorized. Another approach to MIP surveys is to providea number o likely options and then ask respondents to select rom among them. The ollowingBloomberg poll (also o the USA) illustrates this type:

    Survey

Like the CBS and Bloomberg polls, most MIP surveys are administered at a national level. Inthe United States, this means that a typical representative sample o the population (usually de-termined by percentage o men/women; percentage old/young; percentage conservative/liberal,etc.) would require rom 1000 to 1300 or so respondents. Gathering responses rom a globalpopulation has historically been more di cult, but online and telephone sampling has made theglobal population more accessible. For example, GlobeScan administers a global poll annually or the BBC World Service. In the 2010 poll, the nearly 25,000 respondents, contacted by telephone, came rom 23 countries. Poverty was rated as the most serious issue by ten o the countries inthe study, while respondents in ve countries said the rising cost o ood and energy was the

most serious problem.Notice that the wording o the MIP questions varies somewhat; sometimes it is simply, the mostserious problem, other times it is phrased as most important (or serious) issue, and so on. Weknow that wording changes can and does a ect how respondents answer, but in these instances,we think the di erences are minor, and we have modi ed the traditional MIP question some-what in our survey below.

    Survey

FranklinCovey, with consulting and training activities in 123 countries, utilized its Center or Advanced Research to conduct a global MIP survey in early 2011. The survey was administeredonline in English during the months o February and March, 2011 to all email addresses inFranklinCoveys database o Facebook, Twitter, and stphen.r.covey.com community participants,as well as to those people worldwide who had participated in any o FranklinCoveys publicworkshops on the 7 Habits, time management, or other training courses. These databases con-sisted, literally, o hundreds o thousands o people. No attempt was made to weight answers or use other techniques to create a representative sample o respondents rom any particular countryor the world overall. Rather, the survey was sent only to those people who already had somekind o connection with FranklinCovey, most o ten through attending an open-to-the publictraining workshop. The thousands o employees who have participated in FranklinCovey work-shops as part o their companys leadership or employee development plans were not includedin the survey.

The survey panel consisted o six demographic questions (place o residence, type o organizationin which the respondent worked, number o years in the work orce, position in the organiza-tion, type o industry, and educational level), and ve most serious challenge questions, alongwith open-ended opportunities or respondents to explain why they had picked the choices theydid. The survey asked respondents to select and rank, rom a list o problems, the most seriouschallenges acing the world, their countries, their cities, the organizations they worked or, andtheir personal lives. The ultimate goal was not just to nd out what people thought, but rather tolink their opinions to FranklinCovey training programs that emphasize creative problem-solvingderiving rom synergistic thinking.

Respondents were allowed to skip questions they did not want to answer, but most respondents(5113 or about 65%) completed the entire survey. There appeared to be a logic behind thosequestions that were skipped; that is, many o the skipped questions were likely rom people notin the work orce and there ore having no opinion about the organizational challenge question. The survey was sent out over a message rom Dr. Stephen R. Covey encouraging respondentsto participate. The survey took about 15 to 20 minutes to complete. The data were capturedand analyzed by two sta members o the Center or Advanced Research using SPSS and other statistical so tware. Cross tabulations were created when necessary to parse some o the objectivedata, and content analysis was per ormed on the written, open-ended responses.

The 7834 respondents came rom every region o the world and rom a variety o organizations/ industries. We asked respondents only to tell us the general region o the world in which theylived (A rica, Asia, Europe, Latin America, North America, and other), but some people, in their personal comments, indicated which country they lived in. Thus, we know that among manyothers, respondents came rom Canada, India, Mexico, the Netherlands, the Philippines, and theUnited States. Notice that because some respondents skipped questions, the totals are not thesame in every table. Because we were not attempting to create a representative sample, it did notmatter that some questions were skipped.

    It is important to note again that the respondents were people who had already, in some way,made contact with FranklinCovey over the years. Responses were, o course, entirely voluntary;

anyone receiving our survey request could have chosen to respond or not. Thus, again, this isnot a representative sample even o FranklinCovey contacts but is best seen as random eedbackrom the eld. Here then is the breakdown o the demographics o those who chose to respond:

    TabLE 6 education level

Thus, the modal respondent occupied a position in middle management (38%); worked or ahealthcare/educational organization (24%); and was a university graduate (41%). However, themode does not tell the whole story.

A surpr isingly large percentage (21%) o top management had not graduated rom college, nor had 22 percent o middle management. Also, only 43 percent o top management had receivedan advanced (post college) degree. Thus, nearly 60 percent o people who are running businessesat the top management level do not possess advanced degrees, and 65 percent o those runningcompanies at the middle management level do not possess advanced degrees. We may speculatethat this is one reason they made a connection with FranklinCovey, that is, because they mayhave elt the need or the additional support and knowledge they might have received in gradu-ate school had they attended.

As might be expected, the elds o healthcare/education had the largest percentage o top man-agement with advanced degrees (35%) ollowed by pro essional services (16%). On the oppositeend, the hospitality industry had less than 2 percent o top management with advanced degrees, ollowed by retail with 2 percent and transportation with 3 percent.

As or di erences in geographic regions, we ound that 88 percent o respondents rom LatinAmerica were university graduates or above; 85 percent o Asian respondents were universitygraduates or above; and 78 percent o A rican respondents were university graduates or above.By contrast, only 74 percent o North American respondents and just 70 percent o Europeanrespondents were university graduates or above. These last two gures may refect the broader

penetration o the market by FranklinCovey in those regions, compared with the other regionswhere FranklinCovey and its relatively high sticker price may still be reaching only the upper levels o society.

These, then, are the kind o people who responded to this survey. What did they have to sayabout the most important problems in the world, their countries, their cities, their workplaces, and their personal lives?

We asked respondents to select and rank the three most serious challenges facing theworld. Respondents could select rom seven options. The options were: stopping war and ter-rorism, reducing unemployment, providing good education, eliminating poverty, maintaininglaw and order, managing the environmentland, water, and air, and other.

More people chose stopping war and terrorism as their most serious global challenge than theydid any other option. By that we mean that more people avored that choice than any other single choice, i.e., it garnered the largest number o respondents as the modal response. We ol-lowed this modal-selection pattern or all the subsequent questions.

For their second most serious challenge, more people chose eliminating poverty than any other

option. For their third most serious challenge, more people chose managing the environmentthan any other option. Thus, in ranked order, respondents most serious challenges at the globallevel were:

    1. Stopping war and terror ism

    2. Eliminating poverty

A European top manager with over 10 years experience in pro essional services said, As long asresources are unequally divided among humans, we will have to ace challenges like war, terror-ism, and unemployment. Just take a look at the world today, Egypt et al. started with people nolonger accepting an unequal division o resources.

A Latin American middle manager with over 10 years experience in nancial services wrote,Its very important to eliminate poverty in the world. Sometimes hunger makes you to do uglythings in order to survive.

A European middle manager with 6-10 years experience in in ormation services said, Povertyhas no place in a world with such riches. Fairer means o trade are required to li t up the poorestparts o the world. Leadership is required to recognise and act upon this.

Interestingly, more people chose eeling pressured and overworked than any other single op-tion, and they did so or the most serious personal challenge, the next most serious, and thirdmost ser ious personal challenge. For the third option, however, eeling overworked was tied withlack o job satis action. I we had given respondents only three options and asked them to rankthe three, then there would be no possibility o an option appearing more than once, that is, as

both a rst and a second or third choice. Once an option had been chosen, it would disappear as an option in the second and third rounds. But because respondents were able to select romamong seven or eight options, it was possible that the top choice or rank one could also end upbeing the top choice or ranks two or three. Again, recall that we have determined the rankingsby selecting the most requently selected option (the mode) or each question and each level. Thus, it is possible or the same option to appear more than once, and thus it has in this case:

    1. Feeling pressured and overworked

    2. Feeling pressured and overworked

    3. Feeling pressured and overworked / lack o job satis action

We then asked respondents to explain the reason behind their choice o the rst most seriouschallenge in their respective companies. Here is sample o their reasons. Note that althoughmore people selected eeling pressured and overworked than any other choice, many peopleselected other options. So, the sample comments below are related to several o the selected op-tions:

A North American working in healthcare/education explained, My income has been cut sig-ni cantly. Theres enough to survive, but living on the edge is stress ul and unsustainable.

A person residing in A rica with 1-5 years experience in top management wrote, I was work-ing or an international company, but I resigned last year. I le t because I could no longer nd

meaning in what I was doing.

A European middle manager with over 10 years experience in a pro essional services rm said:I get stressed, eeling burned out, and dont have time and energy to do things or me.

The other category, selected by over 700 respondents, included such comments as I want tomake a di erence in the lives o others I worked hard to get into college but didnt. Such thingshappen requently in my li e, My uture is obscure, and ADHD is not easy to cope with, especially with a late diagnosis.

Some o the speci c other items were: lack o personal quality time,I dont achieve what I aim or, jack o all trades; master o none, and balancing work andprivate time. We ound, however, that the top three other responses could be grouped under the ollowing headings:

    1. Managing time ( eeling there is not enough time)

    2. Balance in ones li e

    3. Problems with relationships / absence o relationship

These responses represent the views o about 18% o the total responses. Many o the otherresponses were actually covered in the pre-de ned options, but the respondents pre erred to usetheir own language rather than ours to state the problem.

More than a billion people ace signi cant survival problems

I we do not act, earth will not be in the near uture

Survey The world has gotten smaller and jobs a ect every one

Too many resources are being consumed and awareness o eco- riendly products is low while their price is high.

People need to be busy, and achieving so that they are not looking or solutions. Solving unem-ployment should resolve poverty (at a very general level)

We tend to think that the only wars going on in the world are the Iraq and the A ghanistan war,but in reality there is dozens o wars going on at the same time.

There are still so many people that havent got the basics that so many o us take or g ranted. Ind its a sin that most governments will sit back & do NOTHING

The world was never out o war and it is a very di cult task to exterminate war. Everyone isghting or their ideals. I think this will never be di erent.

A better world, in my opinion, means a world without poverty.

War and terrorism do nothing more than damage a countrys economic structure. Where there aretimes that political upheaval may be necessary in a country, the toll war and terrorism take on itscitizens is brutal. Buildings destroyed, lives lost, and countless amounts o money spent to supportthe destruction, or what, just so someone can have their say about a political view?

The key to competitiveness throughout the world is education. many underdeveloped nations donot have the resources to compete globally.

War and Terrorism should not be combined into the same category when speaking about aWorld Stage. War should encompass economic inequality and imposed hardship on one groupby another. There are plenty o countries with government-imposed racial, ethnic, and economicpersecution. I believe we all have a right to live and make the most o our lives.

Because Terrorists and Extremists want to rule the world.

The world as a whole is ravaged by war. with ever expanding arsenals o weapons o mass destruc-tion eliminating the threat o war is the surest way to ensure the continued enjoyment o reedom

    Poverty

When we live in peace (not just our country), there will be space in our heads and hand todevelop worldwide. I we cant stop worldwide terrorism and wars, it will also a ect our nationaleconomy/health/ uture.

There are still too much people poor

See my answer in the previous question

No economic growth or any country without jobs.

See answer to previous question. No di erential needs.

    Again, sa ety rst

As we know, the WW3 is coming. For the education, this is the most important.

Without the health o people, nothing else matters. I we die early because o poor health, therewill be no one to entrust the world to.

Many people across the globe are unemployed. Something must be done to create more jobs.

I every nation improved the education levels o their people, we would be improving everyoneslives and being better educated would help us as a world community make better choices

Poverty has no place in a world with such r iches. Fairer means o trade are required to li t thepoorest parts o the world. Leadership is required to recognise and act upon this.

I there are no wars to ght and terrorism to deal with, we would be more ocused on improvingour economies and reducing poverty. Look at Sudan.

I there are no wars to ght and terrorism to deal with, we would be more ocused on improvingour economies and reducing poverty. Look at Sudan.

Lots o people are dying unnessesaraly

Solving this problem will hep to solve many others

Education breeds productivity, independence, and adaptability.

No one should be hurt by other people

Poverty is so o ten the catalyst that leads to the anger, hate greed and jealousy behind wars, terror and unemployment - solving the poverty problem has got to be the point o greatest leverage

The world has been divided by haves and have nots. Rich or the poor. There are billions o peo-ple below the poverty line and struggling to meet both ends. Te rich & developed world need todo some thing to bridge this gap.

Well, terror, still is the most important challenge acing the world. It threatens to take away theliberty and progress established democracies want to serve to the global citizens.

Again, education eliminates the rest o the list.

One part o the world lives in great poverty while on the other hand a lot o people (individualsand companies) have more then they need to have in order to live an exorbitant good li e. Thechallenge is to convince the rich to use their means in order to empower poor people to be ableto provide in an income.

I consider that the global ood and water shortage to be the number one world problem given theimmediacy o its infuence in poverty, starvation, the global economy and politics.

terrorrism is a global current problem.

We need to recover a reasonable trust and con dence in our neighbors but there is no peace with-

out justice, without a rather air distribution o resourcesWorlds political chaos and war

This stops the positive growth o the world directly a ecting all the challenges on the list.

Good education will reduce poverty eventually, it will make sure we manage the environment andall the other disasters

    Stopping war and terrorism

This is a growing concern and should be treated with utmost prior ity and urgency.

    good actor back amongst us.

I 1 is achieved we can look at more homogenous e ort rom all countries to combat the other problems

since a lot o countries lack basic knowledge o THE bigger picture, education is most important. All others Will be more success ull a ter that.

Poverty is in my opion the basic or many problems world wide

Poverty is in my opion the basic or many problems world wide

I there is going to be more imbalance between developed and underdeveloped countries becauseo poverty. It is going to cause more problems or the whole world

In much o the world, poverty is the root o many other serious problems, including terrorism, sextra cking and lack o education.

So people can achieve what they want, not taken back by doing things they dont (really) wantto do, but which they need to do to earn money. You have to work or what you want, but i youhave enough money to eat and live in a house, than you can use your abilities or what you want.

I you look at the middle east, they have near 20% unemployment. That clearly helps add a g reatdeal o unstability and anger in the region.

Because once every child has the opportunity to learn- it eliminates many o the other problemsin the world.

Education is basic building block towards nding the answer to other di cuulties that we ace.

War and terrorism inhibit lot o solutions to the other problems like poverty, education and globalhealth. I eel it is the biggest challenge in reaching an equitable world.

Again, most world problems stem rom people not living sustainably

When people are empowered, there is synergy to take care o the rest. Its important to say that Imnot re erring to the current US educational model but to one that truly empowers and providesopportunities or its students.

There has been a population explosion since the beginning o the industrial revolution. We arenow sending ood products across country borders because they can not grow enough ood toeed their own people. The arming practices that they do have do not properly care or the soilin order to continue the lands productivity. There is not enough drinkable water in all placeswhere there are people. We are building huge dams to harness water or the population. Eventu-ally, the water will move itsel back to its original path, creating destruction.

Because no man should have to spend his li e in poverty. Poverty is at the root o other globalproblems like poor education, environmental issues.

I law and order are maintained through out the world, then war and terrorism would subside andmore resources could be spent on protecting the planet and improving the environment.

War and terrorism destroy the ability or people to have sa e lives, provide or themselves and their children, and obtain a solid education.

People are dying and too little care about it.

more than 50% o the people are too poor...

1 & 2 are linked; it seems to me that some countries do not like the way other countries are beingrun and so they decide to en orce their way on the other. Sure, i there is a dictator in charge whodoes not have the people o that country at heart then I would agree that they should be stopped. However, it also seems that the orce, group or organisation that are being ought may not be parto one country but ound in many di erent countries. There is then the idea that actually whatcertain countries are ghting to control may not be dictators but commodities that may be valu-able to them and their economy. But this whole senario has little impact on me and my li e savethe cost o uel to run my car or house (and Im not just talking about oil), which others seem tomerely make millions in pro t rom and or what? Because those millions do not seem to help anyo these key issues.

believe that people who have their basic needs met ( ood and health), who have the tools to envi-

sion and build a uture (education) are ar less likely to partake in acts o terrorism and violence.

IIt is important, not that there is that much terrorism, but the mindset o people has changed. War and terrorism relate directly to economy, thus are a ser ious threat or governments.

A well-educated society will have a naturally lower rate o unemployment, poverty, and be moreaware o ecological problems, directly a ecting the choices I cited as the 2nd and 3rd most impor-tant challenges.

There are countries like India, Pakistan, A aghanistan etc. which are living in such a environmentwhere they dont know what is going to happen with them during the course o the day and arethey going to come back home sa ely.

Similar to my response in what my country aces. When I think o the world, I am not onlythinking about countries that are poverty stricken, having wars, etc. My amily and I visited Koreaa ew years ago. We were able to stay with riends who introduced us to many di erent ages andbackgrounds o people (very young children, working class citizens, military personnel, elderly). One think that struck us as odd was that the younger generations did not understand the perspec-tive o the older generation, why decisions were made to bring the US to Korea, how importantit is to keep a base in Seoul to protect the border rom North, etc. The younger olks were makingdecisions based on in ormation that have in ront o them here and now without looking at thebigger picture o the past and the uture.

We have too many people letting ego get in the way. It is hard to adjust anyones attitude when noone sees things or the greater good..and leaders think that they all have a solution. Un ortunatlythe solution is hampered by everyones sel shness and greed.

No minds working, no Worlds working, or eel controling to What they want. Many minds work-ing, better envirememt to everibody grow!

Good education is the base or everything. Educated people have their own mindset and dont allor wrong messiahs or promises. I we get education right, everything else or ollow automagi-cally.

People o ten try to overcome a confict by con rontation, unknowingly exacerbating theproblem(s). Denying unity between all o li e, all o love, seems to be the cause o many (all?)problems.

The root cause o world problems such as poverty, disease, unemployment, corruption and lack o education is the lack o moral, transparent law and order. Citizens around the world need to beprotected by a law en orcement system that protects and de ends their basic human rights. Once

that is established, economies and health/educational systems can fourish, reducing all o the other problems the world aces.

Again, it is at the root o many o the others

We need to take care o our environment. We have abused it in ways beyond imaginations. I wewill not mind reverting our treatment o the environment, then we are denying our children theright to have a better uture.

The world are ull o resources, oportunities and wellness, but just ew people have the most parto it. We most reach the poorest people and help them with good opotunities.

Because no corporation and no country wants to cede or even wealthness with anyone, leavingthe rich richer and the poor, poorer. In a ew words, greed got the world unbalance.

poverty is prevalent across the globe which is the major reason because o which serious problemo terrorism comes into play because poor uneducated people are very prone to brain wash thatleads them to be a unwanted social entity.

The world is getting increasingly polarised as a result o terrorism. It is going to exert huge eco-nomic, political and social costs in the next ew decades.

I hear the most orm it and it is also a source or other problems like child soldiers, oppresion o minoritiesetcetera

Many children in poor and emerging countries have very little education, especially girls. Educa-tion can solve many o the other problems o the world.

Poverty is the most serious challenge because the other two challeges have their bases in it. Notthe mention its damage to whole social structure.

In the recent years in the US, there has been an upseing o unemployment caused by many actorswith the countrys economy. We have seen companies old under and others reduce their man-power just to stay alive. The mount o people that remain unemployed has not seen a signi cantdecrease or almost three years, with the unemployment ben ts they receive soon running out.How are the American (unemployed) people supposed to survive in an economy thwarted withpoor bene ts, ew jobs, and an even bleeker outlook on the job market?

The United States is aced with the outsourcing o employment due to the rising cost o good andservices. Putting Americans back to work will need strategic planning rom the public and privatesector.

unemployment is causing a growing ri t in the quality o education and nancial stability o middle-class America. As this ri t widens we will lose a generation o potential thought-leaders(ie- educators, advanced degree seekers) to the necessity o guaranteed short-term income. This, inturn, will a ect the viability o uture world leaders coming rom the USA.

Because we are in serious debt, and we need leaders that will work to reduce the national debt andboost the economy.

Were 4 years removed rom the beginning o a recession that purportedly ended almost 2 yearsago. Millions are unemployed and several more are desperate to nd a better job but cant giventhe lack o better options. It a ects our GDP, our stock market indexes and there ore the con -dence employers have in expanding their labor needs

Becuase o the economic crisis, also in the Netherlands unemployment is high

It is the number one thing we need to survive. Basic elements o li e! And this is not only or mycountry.. It starts with each country taking responsibiity or it.

A legal ramework needs to be adequately maintained in order or people to be able to make deci-sions reely. Proper legislation and en orcement would lead to the accomplishment o all the abovegoals, since they could have predictability or the outcomes o actions they take to achieve them.

Where, in your career, have you been told to work entirely by yoursel with the exception o testing or a certain certi -cate? Americans work as a team - so why arent our high schools? Our country has been decimated by years o governmental negligence and corruption allied tobanking irregularities and an economy which was created by non sustainable building develop-ment. Due to the act that we cannot compete in manu acturing industry we need to be able tocompete in knowledge industries. We as a country need to educate ourselves to compete in nontraditional areas like research and development. Otherwise we will never trade our way out o thenancial mess that we nd ourselves in.

The current unemployment rate is high. With lower unemployment, people spend less money, which has a ripple e ect on the goods and services provided in the country. I believe that we have traded what is best or our children or the interest o what is best or adults. When children are ailing in schools they are just le t behind rather than being given tutoring or

other alternatives. When the teachers have worked their 7 or 8 hours they eel their day is over. Itshouldnt work that way.

Too many people abuse power and seek to only advance themselves. Our children arent sa e andare learning the wrong things in li e, based on bad examples. There are no good heroes anymore.

Bad economy at the moment.. so more and more people get unemployed.

Due to the current state o the economy. We are in the depths o this recession, lots o people areout o work (I understand that the gures are at a relatively high level), university is more di cultto gain entry to and the prospect o interest rates increasing means more people want or needmore money and businesses struggle to make enough sales - catch 22.

I see unemployment as a symptom o a larger economic issue in the US.

The education system was changed various times in the last past decades, and the quality did notimprove as believed.

Without education you are a lump walking around cradle to grave dependant on the governmentor someone to take care o you. Education does not mean in school longer..it means learning howto take care o yoursel and others with smart skiils. In Kindergarten learning proper groomingand dietary habits and exercise.. then add how money is used and how to save..and on rom there. We did not learn about that until high school and that is way too late. I there is education thegovernment will not have to spend money providing and will be able to use those unds to createbetter jobs. They will be able to ocus more on solving issues with other countries.

Politicians ocused on personal gain and empty gestures or the sake o the media instead o doing

anything or their country.Terrorism is the most serious problem in my Country (India). We have been acing internationalterrorism since 1992. The people in India are always be in state o insecurity due to this problem.

(NOTE: Wasnt sure this perspective was supposed to be my countrys or my own o where I eelmy country should ocus. I am going with the latter) Good education includes teaching youthhow to make high quality, well in ormed decisions and understand their alternatives, consequences, impacts, etc. regardless o outcome. Once a person has this ability to make decisions ( rom verysimple to complex, or person or business), this is the baseline or succeeding in other areas such ashow to ocus on their uture, how to run a company or political positions to help reduce unem-ployments, etc.

It just worries me, especially with or sole right wing government.

Schools in this country are not preparing our children or the uture. We are alling behind other industrialized countries. Good education can lead to the solution to many o our other problemssuch as eliminating poverty, reduced unemployment, etc.
