Wishing you a Good Shabbos!

Bnai Jacob Shaarei Zion Congregation

We welcome all of our members, their families

and all guests who have joined us for Shabbos!

Parsha Question of the Week:

SHEMITTA & EXILE

There is an important link between the two Parshiyos, Behar and Bechukosai .

In the first section, Behar, we learn the laws of Shemitta and Yovel, the Sabbatical and

Jubilee years, when we are to give the land a respite, its own Shabbos. In the second

section, Bechukosai, we are told the dire consequences that can befall us should we

not adhere to the Torah generally, and to the laws of Shemitta and Yovel specifically.

In fact, the Torah (26:35) comments that the exile of the people from Eretz Yisroel

would provide the land with the respite that it had not gotten when the people were in

the land and not observing the Shemitta. Rashi there calculates that the seventy years

of exile between the two Temples correspond to precisely seventy Shemitta and Yovel

years that had gone unobserved.

By contrast in the warnings in Sefer Devarim, no mention at all is made of

Shemitta-observance as a factor in their exile. Indeed the laws of Shemitta and Yovel

are not even taught in Sefer Devarim. How can it be that something which figures so

prominently as the cause of exile here is not even mentioned there?

Halacha of the Week: A Feature of the BJSZ Daily Halacha Shiur

SHEHECHEYANU ON NEW FRUITS

While we have seen that the recitation of Shehecheyanu on new items is not

an obligation, when it comes to new seasonal fruits it is especially appropriate to make

this Bracha. While the Bracha can be made when the new fruit is first seen, common

custom is to recite the Bracha at the time that the fruit is first being eaten. As such,

common custom is to first make the Bracha over the fruit, and then to make the She-

hecheyanu (see MB 225:11).

In modern times, defining a “new seasonal fruit” can be a bit of a challenge.

Given today’s global produce markets and modern refrigeration techniques, most

fruits and vegetables are available year-round. As such one should make the Bracha

only on fruits and vegetables where the renewed season is readily apparent, such as on

summer peaches or winter oranges, or specific varieties of grapes – concord, cham-

pagne - that are readily available only seasonally (OC 225:3-6; see Piskei Tshuvos

225:17).
