In both cases the mutual commitment between G-d and His nation is described, with the Jewish People designated as Segulah, treasured in their relationship with G-d. The first event had the Ten Commandments, while the second had the Eleven Curses. Yet structurally there is an important difference in the direction and manner of communication. At Sinai, G-d’s presence appeared on the mountain above and communicated with the Jewish People below, whereas here the Levites – speaking G-d’s words - spoke from below to the tribes assembled upon the moun- tains. Why the inverted positions? HALACHA OF THE WEEK: A FEATURE OF THE BJSZ DAILY HALACHA EATING ON EREV SHABBOS It is appropriate to maintain a hearty appetite for the Shabbos meal. As such, there were those who had a custom to fast on Erev Shabbos. Generally we discourage this because there is a down side to beginning Shabbos painfully hun- gry. Nevertheless one is to be mindful to limit their eating on Erev Shabbos in order to maintain proper appetite for the Shabbos meal. Specifically, on Erev Shabbos one should not have any extra-special meal that they do not regularly have on a weekday, unless it is a Seudas Mitzvah like a Bris that needs to be held that day. Where circumstantially Erev Shabbos is the best day for a Seudos Mitzvah such as a Siyum that could have been held on another day, many authorities permit holding it specifically in the morning. Additionally one should be careful to avoid even regular meals in the latter half of the afternoon on Erev Shabbos, or indeed even earlier than that if they know it will negatively affect their appetite (see OC 249:2-3). PARSHA QUESTION OF THE WEEK

TWO MOUNTAINS

Our Parsha (26:16-27:26) describes the covenant as it was to be affirmed

at Mount Gerizim and Mount Eival in Eretz Yisrael. This covenant echoes the origi-

nal covenant established at Sinai. In both cases the mutual commitment between

G-d and His nation is described, with the Jewish People designated as Segulah,

treasured in their relationship with G-d. In both cases an altar was built to express

the covenant, twelve stones were used, and there was the writing of Torah on

stone. The first event had the Ten Commandments, while the second had the

Eleven Curses. Yet structurally there is an important difference in the direction and

manner of communication. At Sinai, G-d’s presence appeared on the mountain

above and communicated with the Jewish People below, whereas here the Levites

– speaking G-d’s words - spoke from below to the tribes assembled upon the moun-

tains. Why the inverted positions?

HALACHA OF THE WEEK: A FEATURE OF THE BJSZ DAILY HALACHA

EATING ON EREV SHABBOS

It is appropriate to maintain a hearty appetite for the Shabbos meal. As

such, there were those who had a custom to fast on Erev Shabbos. Generally we

discourage this because there is a down side to beginning Shabbos painfully hun-

gry. Nevertheless one is to be mindful to limit their eating on Erev Shabbos in order

to maintain proper appetite for the Shabbos meal. Specifically, on Erev Shabbos

one should not have any extra-special meal that they do not regularly have on a

weekday, unless it is a Seudas Mitzvah like a Bris that needs to be held that day.

Where circumstantially Erev Shabbos is the best day for a Seudos Mitzvah such as a

Siyum that could have been held on another day, many authorities permit holding it

specifically in the morning. Additionally one should be careful to avoid even regular

meals in the latter half of the afternoon on Erev Shabbos, or indeed even earlier

than that if they know it will negatively affect their appetite (see OC 249:2-3).

You are all aware of this week's devastating events in Houston. I encourage everyone to participate in the disaster relief efforts being organized through the OU, Agudath Israel, Federations, Chabad and more. I have been in touch with friends and former members of our shul who live in Houston and they have made me aware of specific situations requiring some extra help. I am trying to raise some funds to help them out in this matter. Please participate by donating to the BJSZ Charity Fund and marking the memo: Houston Flood. We hope and pray that HKBH will grant that community and all of its mem-bers the strength to rebuild their homes, lives and community. Rabbi Moshe Hauer
