Team approach to Treatment and Care

Dr.Rasquinhaisdedicatedtorelievingyourjointpain

andrestoringmobilityandqualityoflife.Hemayrec-

ommendconservativemethodsoftreatment,suchas

oralmedication,injectionsorphysicaltherapy.Insuch

cases,hewillworkwiththephysiatryandphysical

andoccupationaltherapyteamsattheUniversity

OrthopaedicAssociatestoimplementtherecommend-

edcourseoftreatment.Severepainor

disability,however,mayindicatetheneedforsurgery.

Weemphasizeateamapproachtosurgicalcare.

InadditiontoDr.Rasquinha,ourteamconsistsof

anursepractitioner,physicianassistant,internist

andanesthesiologist.Forpatientswhoqualify,we

offerabloodlesssurgeryprogramthatutilizesthe

latesttechnologiestominimizeoreliminatetheneed

forbloodtransfusionsduringsurgery.Ourgoalin

allcasesistoutilizethelatesttechniquesandtech-

nologiestocustomizecaretoyourindividualneeds.

is Joint replacement right for You?

Jointreplacementsurgeryisusuallyreservedfor

patientsover55yearsofagewithseverearthritic

conditions.However,thankstorecentadvances

inartificialjointtechnology,itisnowbeingper-

formedingreaternumbersonyoungerpatients.

Whilecircumstancesvary,patientsarecandidates

forjointreplacementsurgeryif:

■ Painissevereenoughtorestrictnot

onlyworkandrecreation,butalsothe

ordinaryactivitiesofdailyliving.

■ Painisnotrelievedbymoreconservative

methodsoftreatment.

■ Stiffnessinthejointissignificant.

■ X-raysindicateadvancedarthritisor

otherproblems.

Quality Care

Dr.Rasquinhaandhisteamarededicatedto

providingthehighestleveloftotalpatientcare—

fromdiagnosisthroughrecovery—makingita

comfortableexperienceforbothpatientsandtheir

families.Theywilldiscussyouroverallhealthcare

issuespriortotreatmentandwilleducateyouin

whattoexpectwitheachtreatmentoption sothat

youcanchoosethebestoneforyou.

The latest in TJr Technology

Dr.Rasquinhakeepscurrentwiththe

latestsurgicaltechniquesandadvancesin

TJRtechnology.Onesuchadvanceisanew

polyethyleneliner,whichis90%moreresist-

anttowearthanstandardpolyethylene.

Anotherisanewceramichipimplantthathas

demonstratedsuperiorwearperformanceinthe

laboratory—meaningthatitpresentsthe

potentialtolastevenlongerthanitsmetal/

plasticimplant“cousins.”Dr.Rasquinha

believesthatthisnewceramictechnology

willprovideanimportantalternative

foryoungerpatientsrequiringTJR.

Total Joint replacement—a new lease on Joint life

Oneofthemosteffectivetreatments

forcertaintypesofseverejointpain

istotaljointreplacement(TJR).TJR

isasurgicalprocedureinwhichanarthriticordam-

agedjoint,suchasa

hiporkneejoint,isremovedandreplacedwithan

artificialjointcalledaprosthesis.Dr.Rasquinhahas

performednumerousjointreplacementprocedures,

includingsecondary,or“revision”surgeries,torepair

orreplacetheoriginalprosthesis.

“LiFe is MOtiOn and MOtiOn is LiFe”

expertise in Complex revision surgery

Whenjointrevisionsurgeryisrequired,patientscan

takecomfortinknowingthatDr.Rasquinhahas

extensiveexperienceandhasbeenspeciallytrainedin

thisprocedure.Revisionsurgeryismorecomplicated

thantheoriginaljointreplacement.Aftertheoldpros-

thesisanddamagedboneareremoved,metalwedges

andbonegraftsmaybeneededtoreplacethelostbone

andfillinbonecavities.Inrevisionhipsurgery,the

topofthethighbone(femur)mayneedtobecutinto

segments,cleanedofoldcement,andthenwired

togetheraroundthenewmetalfemoralcomponent.

Common Causes of Joint Pain

Theproperfunctioningofyourjointsallowsyou

tomovewithoutpain.Injury,diseaseandagecan

makejointsstiffeninmuchthesamewayaswear

andalackoflubricationcancausestiffnessand

squeakinginadoorhinge.Arthritisisthemost

commoncauseofjointpain,afflictingnearly20%

ofAmericans.Jointpaincanalsobecausedby

deformityorbydirectinjurytothejoint,asinthe

caseoftraumaorasportsinjury.

dr. rasquinha is dedicated to relieving

your joint pain and restoring mobility

and quality of life.

"total hip replacement is an option for nearly all

patients with diseases of the hip that cause chronic

discomfort and significant functional impairment.

Most patients have an excellent prognosis for long-

term improvement in symptoms and physical function."
