Telugu Association of Tucson Arizona 1 Newsletter for members of TATA http://www.tucsontelugu.org Nov 2012, Issue - 6 Board Members (2012-2013) President: Katyayani Suryadevara [email protected] Vice President: Vijaya Rao [email protected] Treasurer: Vasudha Raju [email protected] Secretary: Sri Vani Rallabandi [email protected] Cultural Secretary: Gopal Srinivasan [email protected] Executive Board Member: Shyam Sunder [email protected] Past President: Subrahmanyam Aradyula [email protected] Founding Member: Nirmala Lavu [email protected] Editor: Meena Venkataramanan President’s Note Greetings! At the outset, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the founders and all the financial supporters of this association, for their commitment, responsibility and moral support. I would like to thank the board members and their families for their dedication and involvement to make each event a success. It has been a pleasure celebrating the events together as TATA family with all the cooperation of our members. Most importantly, our thanks are due, to Hari Venkat, our webmaster, who initiated and encouraged to resume this Newsletter 6th edition and to Meena Venkataramanan for her enthusiasm and hard work. TATA takes pride in involving in community service events and organizing fundraisers for charitable organizations as well. Our community service event, coordinated by Vasudha Raju received accolades from Aviva Children Services. This was a sewing event where tote bags were made for children in the foster care system. We are proud of the effort and enthusiasm shown by all the participants, especially kids. Sign up for the upcoming Community Service with Southern Arizona Community Food Bank to help bag food for the needy on Dec 8th & 15th. We hope to be involved in many more events similar to this. We are also proud sponsors of Vegesna, an international institution for the rehabilitation of the differently abled children. A free musical event, organized as a fundraiser was performed by Vegesna volunteers. Vegesna foundation helps more than 1000 disabled children physically handicapped, polio affected, mentally challenged, blind, deaf, dumb by providing free education , vocational training, and attending health needs etc. An institution like this would motivate anyone to make a lifelong commitment of doing service, one way or other. TATA raised $6483 in addition to $1500 in Indian currency to help this charitable organization. Thanks to all those who attended the event and made their generous contributions. We are equally pleased to share that TATA is proud of being a financial facilitator to Ragazona, a nonprofit organization that promotes our music and culture. Our first event of the year Ugadi, combined with a musical concert by Parthu is the gift in itself to all the members because only non-members are charged for this event. Thanks to Kalyan Dasika for taking the initiative to coordinate this event. In addition, our Talent Night really opened a new channel to all our TATA kids to show their innate talents in a cooperative environment. We are excited to share the zest and expertise exhibited by our TATA kids and truly commends their involvement. TATA picnic, hosted by Rallabandi family was another fun filled get together except for the heat. We decided to be cautious and appraise the weather conditions when we schedule this event for next year. Get ready for the upcoming events of the year! Diwali Celebrations, hosted by Dr.Vijaya Chada and family will have to be moved to November 24th to accommodate ISSA. Hopefully, our first online potluck venture should make the job easy to hostess and flexible to our members. Our cultural, classic event of the year that all the TATA ladies get involved and look forward to is Muggula Poti hosted by Aradhyula family, followed by Sankranti celebrations by Dr. Sujatha Reddy & family in January, 2013. We are equally excited about our upcoming new event of the year TATA Night, on February 23, 2013 where in all the members have the opportunity to participate in all that we do as they enjoy free dinner. This event, sponsored by the Maddur family will be the first its kind. Our board is moving forward to plan to have the most memorable get-togethers, for our TATA family, as we welcome your suggestions to make them even more effective and enjoyable.

UGADI Our first event of the year Ugadi was celebrated on March 25, 2012 at 3:00 pm at St. Cyril of Alexandria Church. This event was hosted by Dr. Venkateswara Rao and Vijaya Rao. All the members enjoyed the feast of ethnic homemade food prepared by our enthusiastic and committed ladies of TATA. A brief general body meeting was held where in the new board members introduced themselves with a short reflection of their goals. The highlight of this event was the performance by Parthasarathi (Parthu), a renowned playback singer and music director. Parthu electrified and enthralled the audience with his musical melodies in different languages. (Parthu has performed for audience of Indian Cinema music in five continents. He performs in multiple languages (Hindi, Telugu, etc). He toured with his own orchestra, and at times with singers like Sri S.P. Balasubrahmanyam and Smt. S.P. Sailaja, Smt. Malathi, Smt. Suneetha, etc. Thanks to Kalyan Dasika for coordinating this event)

TALENT NIGHT Talent Night was hosted by the TATA Board on Saturday June 9th between 5:30 and 9:00 pm at Pima Medical Hall. As you all know, this year we wanted to introduce a new event focusing on children of all age groups, celebrating their creativity, expertise and accomplishments, both educational and cultural. This is not a competitive but a cooperative effort on the part of the children and parents as well. All the participants were recognized and acknowledged for their skills and were presented with mementos from Smt. Rama and Sri Gangadhar Rao Bollimpalli. The best part of the event was that we were able to avoid cooking this time and ordered pizza for dinner. We honored a few video presentations in absentia as those families could not make it to the event. The main intent of the whole event is celebrating our children, giving them an opportunity to present their expertise and to show our appreciation. We hope this event will continue to be part of our TATA celebrations.

KONDAVEEDU FORT: THE EMBODIMENT OF TELUGU VALOR

By Archana Pulijala

Historical Background of Kondaveedu: Prolayavema Reddy established the Reddy kingdom and started his ruling from Addanki in the present day Prakasam district. He also built 84 forts by strengthening the existing ones and also new ones at various strategic points in his domains. After Prolayavema, his son and successor Anavota Reddy shifted his capital from Addanki to the impregnable hill fort Kondaveedu. Kondaveedu dynasty comprises 6 rulers i.e. Prolaya Vema Reddy (1325-1353 AD), Anavota Reddy (1353-1364 AD), Anavema Reddy (1364-1386 AD), Kumaragiri Reddy (1386-1402 AD), Pedakomati Vema Reddy (1402-1420 AD) and Racha Vema Reddy (1420-1424 AD), and the total span of their rule is about 100 years. Yogi Vemana is said to have been the son of Peda Komati Vema Reddy, who wrote Telugu poems which discuss the subject of Yoga, wisdom and morality. Kondaveedu rulers were not only men of letters, they also patronized many writers and scholars like Yerrapragada (Prabandha Parameshwara) who was the court poet of Prolaya Vema Reddy and regarded as one of the Telugu poets of Kavitrayam. Srinatha (Kavi Sarvabhouma) was an educational officer of Pedakomati Vema Reddy and Vamana Bhattabana was the court poet of Pedmakomati Vema Reddy. Yerrapragada wrote books like Harivamsam, Ramayana, Sanskrit Mahabhrata was rendered into Telugu. Srinatha wrote books like Harivilasa, Bhimakandam, Kashikhandam, Shringara Naishadam, Palanati Veeracharitra, Kridabhiramam, etc. Vamana Bhattabana wrote a book called Vema Bhoopaliyam. Kataya Vema was not only an able administrator and a competent general but an outstanding scholar known for his learned commentary, Kumaragiri Rajeeyam, on the plays of Kalidasa which is perhaps the first work of its kind. Kumaragiri is an aesthete and is known for his scholarly interest in dance and music. He was fond of his court dancer, Lakuma, and authored a book on dance, Vasanta Rajeeyam, for which there are many references, the Manuscript, however, is yet to be traced.

Pedakomati Vema was a talented scholar and is author of Sanskrit works, Sringaradeepika, a commentary on Amaru Shatakam, Sahitya Chintamani and Sangeeta Chintamani, commentaries on dance and music. Kondaveedu Fort: Kondaveedu fort is located about 26 km away from Guntur, close to Phirangipuram. It is a hill fort chosen obviously for its strategic value. Strategically built on a low hill range (average altitude: 1700 ft), the fort belongs to the Giridurgam category; the hills are joined by massive stone walls to form an unbroken fortification. The outer defense is provided by a mud fortification at the foot hills on the northern and western sides from where the threat was expected, and two flights of steps lead to the main fort on the hill slopes on the two sides of the hill range. The circumference of the fortified area is about 32 km with 54 bastions each with a vantage view dotting the fort wall. Within are the ruins of the township, water sources, temples, stables garrisons and public utilities and the township. One can see the extensive remains of the fort. It fulfills all the requirements of an impregnable fort.

Ragazona In 2012, Tucson witnessed the birth of Ragazona, a new

non-profit organization that promotes music and charity.

The inaugural concert on flute in February by Surmani Sri Kalyan Raman proved to be an excellent beginning to the

season.

It was followed by Composers Day, an event that honored the great composers of Carnatic music.

In August, Ragazona produced Sangeetha Sameeksha, an event that proved the caliber of the local talent that is

present in the valley.

The most recent event, a Carnatic Classical Concert by internationally recognized vocalist Dr. Pantula Rama,

proved to be a grand finale to the 2012 season.

All in all, Ragazona was able too donate more than $500 dollars to the Community Food Bank this year, and we can

hardly wait for the 2013 season.

LONELINESS By Meena Venkataramanan

Loneliness is a glass jar, Containing one last penny Forgotten. Lost. It is a moonlit beach at the dead of the night-- The sound of a wave gently lapping over smooth sand, The soft howl of a wolf miles away. Loneliness is a mysterious voice lingering within minds Speaking softly to those who have lost hope And taunting those who fear it. Loneliness is the final hospital room on the last floor, The sound of a bedridden patient Dying slowly in his sleep. Loneliness is when the party is over The sight of a room full of sagging streamers and airless balloons But no one to celebrate.

A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

Dear TATA Members,

I would like to start off by thanking everyone for their patience. It took a while to create this issue of the TATA Kaburlu, but it is finally finished. I would like to give special thanks to Kalyan Uncle, who gave me insight and guidance on how to create, compile, and revise the newsletter to perfection. I would also like to thank Katyayani Aunty, who was there throughout the process to answer my questions and proofread drafts of the newsletter. Finally, I would like to thank all the contributors—both children and adults—for their great pieces, be it artwork, stories, or puzzles.

This issue includes a Telugu story by Sri Vani Rallabandi, an informative piece on Kondaveedu Fort by Archana Pulijala, a geography puzzle by Sumhith Aradhyula, and many more great contributions. Please feel free to contribute whatever you’d like to the next issue.

I learned a lot being the TATA editor. The process isn’t as easy as it looks, and I learned that you often have to really persist and persevere to get what you want. However, I really enjoyed creating the newsletter and throughout the process, I kept my eye on the prize—the satisfaction of seeing the finished product.

On a final note, I hope you all enjoy reading this issue of the TATA Kaburlu and look forward to future issues.

Thank you, Meena Venkataramanan.
