a Letter from the executive directorJulie H. RichardNHA, MA

The summer edition of the Steere House newsletter always holds some exciting news and this edition is no exception. Since we established the Steere House Legacy Award just three years ago, our cover story has profiled incredible people whose commitment to Steere House, the healthcare community and Rhode Island area seniors who need our care and services is unwavering. I am proud that I have been able to work with the winner of this year’s Legacy Award, Ted Hallenbeck, for the past five years. His fourteen years of experience on the Steere House Board has provided me with a unique depth of per-spective. I’m looking forward to recognizing him and his volunteer efforts here and within the great-er community at our Autumn’s Promise Dinner & Auction on Friday, October 4th.

The importance of Autumn’s Promise to Steere House is well known, and the evening’s success is dependent upon the participation of everyone who supports our mission. And while I can promise a wonderful atmosphere filled with camaraderie and laughter, I am asking that you come to help make EMR a reality for Steere House. Just as we’ve dedicated our 2013 Annul Fund Campaign to this cause, we are dedicating our annual Fund The Need Auction to this important initiative. Main-taining that important human touch our patients and residents experience every day is always our priority, yet incorporating the use of electronic or digital records and tools will make a positive differ-ence in the care we provide. I hope you can help us realize our vision.

Please plan to join me at 7 o’clock on Friday, Oc-tober 4th for Autumn’s Promise at a new location: Providence Marriott Downtown Hotel, 1 Orms Street. There you’ll find yourself surrounded by friends, old and new, whose support for Steere House is so greatly appreciated.

Kameny Lectureship Set for October 29

For Carol McMahon, her passion for volun-teering and concern for the welfare of oth-ers has motivated her to serve on the Steere

House Board of Directors since 2012. “Volunteering provides an opportunity for me to help others in a variety of ways,” she said. Carol was introduced to the Steere House community by good friend and former Steere House Board member, Lor-raine E. O’Rourke. For Carol, her decision to join the Board was an easy one as the role re-lates to many aspects of her professional life. Carol holds a BS and a Masters in Education from Rhode Island College. She has worked for the State of Rhode Island as a Human Resources Administrator for more than 33 years, serving at the Department of Education; Transportation; Children, Youth and Families; and Corrections. Prior to working for the State, Carol served as an elementary school teacher for the North Providence School Department. Her experience, along with her devotion to helping oth-ers, has made her a great fit at Steere House. What appealed to Carol most when tak-

ing her seat on the Board was the commitment by Steere House to provide unparalleled nursing care, as well as foster a culture of caring for residents and

families. “Its sense of community is inspirational,” she reflected. But Carol’s goodwill doesn’t stop here. Since 2000, Carol has served as an Executive Committee member and recording Secretary of the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Pe-ter’s Church in Warwick. She also brings her experience to the Steere House Corporate Development Team and has been affiliated with such state-run teams and commit-tees as the Equal Employment Op-portunity and Affirmative Action Advisory, Critical Incident/Stress Management Team, Permanent Advisory Commission on Women

in Rhode Island, among others. When asked what she hopes to bring to the Board and the Steere House community, Carol an-swered confidently, “Regarding nursing home care, I will work with the Board for appropriate action on behalf of residents, family members and donors.” She added, “I will work diligently on their behalf.” Carol resides in Warwick, RI with her husband, Gerry and has been enjoying retirement since 2008.

At the Steere House Annual Meeting held June 24, Rhode Island native William G. Arnold was in-troduced as a member of the Board of Directors. Currently, he is resident vice president at EMC Insurance Companies and president of the Union Mutual of Providence, a wholly owned subsidiary

of EMC. He became familiar with Steere House through his professional association with Starkweather & Shepley, an insurance services provider to Steere House. Bill’s interest in serving on the Board comes from his awareness of Steere House services within the community. By being on the Board, he hopes to lend his busi-ness management skills. A graduate of F.W. Olin Graduate School of Business at Babson College, Bill holds an MBA. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Bryant University. Bill also holds several industry licenses and designations and is a past officer and active Board member of the Society of Charter Property Casualty Underwriters/Rhode Island Chapter.
