Senior Pastor Board Report Dion Garrett June 2019

Giving and Finances God has been faithful! Giving remains slightly above budget and expenses have remained low keeping us moving toward our budgeted surplus for the year. I need to acknowledge that although we were all uncertain how finances would change after the fundraising piece of NEXT, our finance team served us very well by providing an attainable income projection for us, and God has taken care of surpassing that projection! Our staff continues to show extraordinary restraint in unnecessary spending also, prioritizing NEXT vision fulfillment and cash building. God is good! STJ School and LEAD School Our new School Marketing Advisory Team (made up of 15 parents and several members of staff) is working on how to best get our school message out. As a part of this process, we are creating a “brand house” for school and will have to wrestle with the clearest way to identify ourselves. We currently have multiple names going, St. John School and LEAD School happening on Pathfinder Church campus. We need to be thoughtful about how we identify ourselves best for the community. That does not necessarily mean a name change for the community, but we will wrestle with things like name, logo, taglines, etc. as we build our brand house. Another round of community research will vet the brand house we create to ensure we have messages that are not only true of us, but are compelling for our community. This work is being driven by Seth Hinz, along with our brand/marketing consultant Amy Calvin and our research consultant Linda Garavalia. The process is set to culminate in a new brand delivered before fall open houses begin in October. NEXT –Phase 3 We have begun the approval process with the City of Ellisville for our Phase 3 plans. We will need approval for a couple of planning and zoning related items and then approval from the architectural review board. Applications were submitted on June 10. Approvals could be given at the July 17 city council meeting. Please be in prayer for a favorable review from our city. Sabbatical Our ministry leaders continue to prepare for my absence June 22 – Aug 4. Key staff have my itinerary and will know under which circumstances they should contact me. Otherwise I will not be around here for several weeks! Let me express again how grateful I am for this opportunity. I love our church and feel loved and cared for here, beyond my wildest expectations. See you in August! Note: due to my sabbatical absence, I will not be filing a “Senior Pastor Report” in July.

Pastoral Office Team Board Report Doug Mauss – Groups and Care

June 2019 Life Transitions and Care

Pastor Roger Altenberger has been terrific about handling a recent spate of hospitalizations, care needs, and funerals! He’s been prompt in responding to unexpected requests for visits and making sure nobody falls between the cracks. I’ve gotten feedback from several people about how appreciative they are of his attention and efforts. He’s also built a strong bond with our Trailblazers group.

Pastor Roger has also been building momentum within our Trailblazers to revive our LaVisTe (Lay Visitation Team). He’ll be holding his first training session on July 8. We have a reciprocal goal for ministry: We want to maintain connection between our homebound folks and the Pathfinder Church community, as well as give our Trailblazer folks an opportunity to expand their own connections through fellowship and service.

There is a new couple to our church that has expressed interest in leading our Daniel Plan group in the Fall. I’m meeting with them this week.

Adult Groups and Studies Men’s Ministry

The BRO-BQ was under-attended. I attribute much of this to it being at the same time as Game 3 of the Blues-Bruins Finals. However, that said, these BRO events continue to serve their purpose: we had one first-time attender get plugged in to an IronMen group (with his family being invited to join a LIFEgroup, as well) within a week of the event! The point of these events is to show men of West County that they are valued and sufficient—Pathfinder Church is a place where they can just come and be and not have more demands put on them.

BRO Events Evaluation: o Wins: more men on the steering committee are taking ownership for these events, we’re

finally starting to earn a reputation that it is “safe” for our men to invite their friends or coworkers to have a good time, some organic connecting is definitely happening.

o Areas for Growth: we need to reinfuse some energy into these which will encourage men to be even more excited about inviting people to it, there are also some opportunities to make these even more open and appealing to our broader community with exhibitors, live music, corporate and community partnerships, providing childcare, etc.

We had our second annual Sharpen the Saw, men’s leadership lunch, at Schlafly Bottleworks. 20 men attended. They strongly appreciated Rick Fessler’s testimony about how he changed his company’s culture using the “magic questions” of SGE (see later bullet), and we brainstormed what changes men’s ministry needs to make to be more effective at reaching and helping men of our community. I’ll share more about the specific action steps from that in the next board report. Women’s Ministry

Our Women’s Steering committee is really starting to think about the bigger picture of women’s ministry, and not just preparing for the next event. In the Fall, we’re going to start meeting monthly.

Party with a Purpose went very well in our new Commons space. There was a very nice turnout (around 70 women). The thing I’m most excited about is that they created a new volunteer department: hospitality/networking for the event. These volunteers’ only duty is to look for folks who are new or seem hesitant or are not plugging in with anybody. They then take it upon themselves to engage, get to know those people, and then try to connect them with other women at the event. In addition, they report back to the leaders of the event anyone

they met with, so that we can follow up with these new people, and give them opportunities to connect at Pathfinder Church beyond the event itself.

We’re bolstering our events/offerings next year with a new speaker series, and a new fun-focused event (tentatively titled: Dames with Games). Tiny Church

A retrospective on the Spiritual Growth Experience (SGE). o Over 100 different people tried the SGE, and were exposed to a new method for doing

discipleship/evangelism/spiritual growth. o Two couples committed to trying to lead their own, proto-Tiny Church, groups based on

this philosophy. I am working with both of them this summer to start their groups in the Fall.

o About 20 people committed to the SGE itself, and attended faithfully through the end of the school year. I will be encouraging them to take a next step of leadership when we resume SGE in the Fall.

o I’m encouraging our LIFEgroup, IronMen, and Women’s Study leaders to use this approach as well, rather than just rely on the discussion questions in their program materials. I’ve already had encouraging feedback from several of our groups that these “magic question” conversations are deeper, more organic, and more fruitful than the kinds of discussions they’ve previously had.

o The SGE reinforced for me that we are on to something true and transformative with this “spiritual conversation” and “coaching” approach. I think this can become an effective training ground for people at Pathfinder to become agents of growth in their own lives and the lives of others. Moving forward,

We need to revamp the messaging for SGE to our people, so they better understand it and are excited to try it.

Doug will refine how we keep people moving forward on their journey and not just camping out in a “pastor-led” group study.

Doug is also working with Seth Hinz on developing the strategy and resources to better engage with geographically distant people. We’re looking at how to leverage and expand our online content and resources. We also want to provide clear, guided next steps through our web presence, including possible Tiny Church outposts.

LIFEjourney Board Report Chris Toomey

June 2019 Kid’s Ministry: Sneak Peek and Move Up

Rising 5th and 6th grade students were given a sneak peek of 5th Element and CORE in May. We noticed a shift in emotion. Students used to be anxious and nervous about moving up but

now they are excited and energized. Special note: students were super attached to 5th Element and sad to leave because they love

the gym and Scott Collins😊. Student Ministry: Confirmation

We had 40 students get confirmed this year. Part of the low number is due to this class being one of the least involved classes in the last few years.

About 12 students from this 8th grade class were already confirmed last year as 7th graders. As we debriefed, we’ve decided to make some changes for next year’s rehearsal and service

that will put more emphasis on the rehearsal/Statement of Faith reading, and make the service feel less like a graduation.

Middle School Move Up

Two interns, Mikayla and Isaac, helped Jon and Pua host 25-30 rising 6th graders for a party in the gym! It’s the largest incoming class we’ve seen in a few years, and we think that’s in large part to 5th element. 1 older student joined the party, and we let him help lead games.

Community Engagement: Community Outreach:

Alex Token joined our staff as the Community Engagement Intern. He already met with 5 community partners in the month of May.

Fostering Together: We filmed all members of the Care Communities for the Fostering Together video.

o The interviews were incredibly inspiring because we got to hear how firmly our people believe in Fostering Together.

The planning for our annual 4th of July event is well under way. Needs:

Our client MG is making great progress this month. o CIA was able to assist him with a voucher for clothes for him and his pregnant wife. o He was able to obtain a down payment for a car through one of our community partners. o Unfortunately, he had a previous DUI on his record so his license is not valid.

MG needed to attend 2 SATOP classes in order to obtain a valid driver’s license, which cost $200.

CIA was able to cover the cost and the next step with MG will be to put in a CIA alert in order to collect baby items for his family and to help them find long-term housing.

o MG is currently working with a volunteer lawyer with CIA who is helping him with his expungement. MGs record on Case Net should be cleared in the next 30-60 days, which will help him pass a background check to get into housing.

11

Page 12: Board of Directors Monthly Meeting June 2019 No Meeting€¦ · Monthly Meeting June 2019 – No Meeting . Pathfinder Church Board of Directors Meeting June 2019 – No Meeting Table

o A community referral (given to MG by CIA) was able to help him formulate a plan to pay off all of his debt in 3 years.

CIA continues to work with Pat Pettey from ElectroSavings on some proposed IDA accounts. Local Missions:

For the first intern leader training of the summer, David and Tara took the group down to the College Hill area and introduced the interns to three of our local mission partners: Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Sunshine Ministries and Bryan Hill Elementary.

o At Bryan Hill Elementary, we introduced the interns to Dr Briscoe and the entire staff. In conjunction with our effort to support the staff on a deeper level the interns handed out $5 gift cards to the entire staff as a thank you for the hard work they did that year, then we prayed over the staff on their way out for the summer. The interns were most struck by this visit and how excited and happy all the teachers/staff were to see David and Tara. It drove home how deep the relationship goes between our two organizations.

National / International Missions:

Tara and three college students went to Nicaragua for the college mission trip with our partner Amigos for Christ.

o The three girls were able to engage in service-oriented activities with Amigos that spoke directly to their college majors (environmental engineering, pre veterinary etc.).

o Jaime Speichinger missed her high school graduation ceremony in order to go on the trip, so the Nicaraguan staff threw her a graduation ceremony on the last night complete with a people-tunnel for her to walk down while they applauded, graduation music, a diploma, and of course tons of pictures!

Worship: Marquette Baccalaureate

Great community event – 3rd year in a row that we have hosted the event.

Moms in Prayer group raved about our open-hearted approach in partnering to make the event

happen.

June 2019 Branding, Marketing & Creative

The new church website was a major focus for May. Work continued on streamlining the current site content (300+ pages) into a more user-friendly site architecture. Work also included taking new staff photos for the new website.

The Faith Matters May 2019 issue was produced, designed, printed, and mailed out. Articles featured included Next Phase 3 improvements, Vacation Bible School Behind the Scenes, LEAD School Year 1 in Review, and How to Share Your Story (a 1.1.15.6 focus).

Met with MOPs leaders to better understand communication goals and needs, which included implementing a new registration process. Seeking solutions to launch this summer/fall.

Worked with Strategic Team to plan out End of Fiscal Year giving campaign for the church. Coordinated with July 4th event planning team to market the upcoming event to internal and

external audiences. Design team worked to rebrand this year’s event, freshening up the look and bringing it into alignment with the new brand.

We welcomed a Digital Marketing intern for Summer 2019. Jack Maurer has already produced 2-3 video pieces for social media and begun work on SEO project, updating our church presence in online directories.

To help clarify and more effectively communicate the St. John School story, the School Marketing Advisory Committee was created. The first meeting was held in May and, in part, facilitated by the Marketing & Creative team.

Marketing Vacation Bible School continued in May, including ad placements online and in print. Hospitality:

Our focus on recruitment for both new and current roles expanded. We welcome 2 first-time communion servers, 2 new team leads in the Café, and 4 first-time Café volunteers.

A new schedule and policies were implemented in the Café. In the month of May, we saw three weekends of the Café being volunteer led and driven. Made some cost-effective changes in the Café and in the kitchen to help manage overall food

costs and waste. Worship

We kicked off May by providing special lighting for the School of the Arts (SOTA) Spring Jam Session, helping to create a great environment while the students showed off their skills.

Once SOTA had wrapped up their spring session, we worked as part of the team to remodel the SOTA areas to bring them a fresh new look and support their growth! We installed audio equipment for music to play in the gathering and waiting areas, to make our campus experience more inviting and comfortable.

We are working on installing a backstage paging system that will help support the special productions we have on campus, like VBS, school plays, and the Christmas production. This will enable the cast backstage to hear what is happening in the Sanctuary and receive cues. This will be a huge help for those events!

May also marks the completion of the Confirmation classes for student ministry, the Tech Team provided support (including live streaming) for the confirmation service.

Our team provided technical support for the school’s production of The Music Man. The students did an incredible job and we are so proud to have been able to be a part of it and help

support our school. We really enjoyed working with Christy Clark and were so impressed with the musicals, she will be missed!

We provided support for and live streamed the 8th grade graduation and provided special lighting for the Kindergarten graduation.

We supported the Baccalaureate service for Marquette High School, which is always a great opportunity to support the people in our community and bring new people on to our campus!

During May, we are also ramping up to VBS. In addition to all the work on media and video, we are also preparing our tech volunteers for VBS. Many of them are new this year, so they have been in training during weekend worship to use our cameras and video equipment. We are always excited to bring in new volunteers!
