Spring 2013 Newsle�er—Welcome! Having survived another year, the chapter looks forward to the challeng-

es which will arise in 2013.

We are always open to your sugges5ons on how to get involved with

military and veteran ini5a5ves which my cross your desks during the year.

All we ask is to reach out to any chapter officer or board member with the

details.

In 2012 several new ini5a5ves were undertaken, and exis5ng ini5a5ves

renewed:

1. In May, $1,200 in scholarships were awarded to deserving JROTC ca-

dets at our three supported units. We may look to increase the three $200

scholarships this year. The $400 John P. Rhude scholarship will con5nue for

another four years and the Mildred Swarts $200 scholarship for another

two years. Let a chapter officer or board member know if you would like to

a:end any of the three schools (Proctor, Notre Dame, or RFA) scholarship

ceremonies that will take place this May. It's always rewarding to see the

caliber of cadets that receive these awards.

6. Support for the House of Good Shepherd in New HarJord con5nues. Last December many Christmas giEs and

$230.00 was donated for the young people at the home. Thanks to all those who answered the call to assist. See

page 8 for the HOGS Thank You le:er.

7. A new ini5a5ve last year was the placing of wreaths on the graves of veterans at both the Rome Cemetery and

the Evergreen Cemetery in Lee. The event was executed in conjunc5on with the na5onal wreath laying events at Ar-

lington and over 800 other cemeteries and memorials in the U.S. by Wreaths Across America. Thanks goes out to

Greg Bertolini, Joe and Margarite Maurer, Richard and Peggy Rubrecht, and Jim and Brenda Mar5nez for their un-

selfish help in making the two ceremonies a success. The two colorful ceremonies were widely covered by the local

newspaper and television sta5ons which brought noted recogni5on to our chapter. Over 230 sponsored wreaths

were placed at the two cemeteries. Thanks also go out to all our members who sponsored some of these wreaths.

Businesses in the area were also generous in their sponsorship of these wreaths with the Stewart's Shops, Price

Chopper and Goodrich Corpora5on contribu5ng up $500 each. This event also benefi:ed GRUCMOAA by increasing

our chapter's treasury by $1,000.

FiEy-five wreaths have been sponsored for the December 14, 2013 event. We look forward to honoring many

more deceased veterans from all the past wars for their unselfish sacrifices in keeping our country free. New ceme-

teries may be added this year, and more help from chapter members will be needed. Our goal is to place over 500

wreaths at three or four cemeteries in the local area. If you are interested in becoming a key player in these events

contact chapter president Bob Haley at 315-336-4220 or [email protected]. Let's try to increase the chapter's

treasury by $2,500 which will aid in suppor5ng more of our veterans and current military ini5a5ves.

8. Two other ini5a5ves underway this year are: "Adopt A Platoon", and Disabled American Veterans (DAV) driving

veterans to the Syracuse VA Hospital. The platoon, deployed from Fort Drum, is currently in southern provinces of

Afghanistan. Support is star5ng this spring and members are encouraged to take part by contac5ng Bill Hamelin who

has agreed to head this ini5a5ve. Bill has all the details on this program. Both Bill Hamelin, [email protected]

and Jim Mar5nez, [email protected] are ac5ve in the DAV program, so if you’re interested in taking part, con-

tact them to make your desires known.

SOCIAL EVENTS The chapter had six "First Wednesday of the Month" dinners last year which were well a:ended with 20 to 35

members a:ending each dinner held at various loca5ons in the U5ca/Rome area. The dinners featured reports from

our cadets in the JROTC units which proved to be very well received. Monthly dinners have again been lined up for

this year star5ng with the dinner at “Teddy’s” on March 6th. A:empts will be made to line up programs/speakers for

many of these dinners. Your sugges5ons on new restaurants in which to hold these dinners, and speakers to invite,

are always welcomed.

The larger a:ended events such as the "Spring Fling", the summer picnic hosted by Jim Tilly and our annual "Pearl

Harbor Day Dinner" all proved to be very successful. COL Limpert's presenta5on on his deployments to Iraq and Af-

ghanistan as an Air Force Reserve pilot may have been the highlight of the chapter's social events for the year. Pro-

ceeds from these events added close to $1,000 to the chapter's treasury.

This year's "Spring Fling" will return to The Beeches on Sunday April 21st. We are excited to have as this year's

speaker Congressman Richard Hanna. With the addi5on of all your an5cipated ques5ons, he will fill us in on the cur-

rents military dealings of Congress and how they will play out in the future. This should prove to be quite an informa-

5ve event so mark your calendars to a:end to provide a large listening audience for Rep. Hanna.

Where the summer picnic will be held this summer has yet to be determined, your sugges5ons will be greatly ap-

preciated.

The Pearl Harbor Remembrance Dinner will once again be held at The Lake Delta Inn on December 7th.

One last, but certainly not least, social event will be the annual Memorial Day Burger Burn. We thank the Kimball’s

for graciously invi5ng us for the third year in a row to their pala5al estate on Lake Delta. As always the weather is

forecasted to be sunny and warm for this event.

It's been a pleasure to par5cipate in all the social events that the chapter provides and we hope to see many

more members at the events this year. The social interchange and camaraderie can not be beat. Hope to see and

meet many new members this year.

RECRUITMENT Na5onal MOAA has developed a new ini5a5ve to a:ract new members to the chapters. There are a large

number of na5onal members not currently belonging to the chapter in our local area. It will be our job to register

as many as possible into the chapter. Your help will be greatly needed to make this ini5a5ve a success. Thanks in

advance for your concern and aid in this ma:er.

Director CW4 Bill Hamelin has been involved with ‘Adopt A Platoon’ through the Northern New York-Fort Drum

Chapter Associa5on of the United States Army and is bringing the program to the members of GRUCMOAA. Con-

tact has already been ini5ated and the Scout Platoon, HHC, 1-87 Infantry Ba:alion was assigned to GRUCMOAA.

The platoon is serving in Afghanistan, any addi5onal morale support we can provide from March to August will

be much appreciated. The unit is expected back in the states in October. The Scout Platoon Leader 1LT Markus A.

Notre Dame NJROTC News Cadet Commanding Officer LCDR Alyssa Zarnoch

The Notre Dame NJROTC unit has been enjoying a successful year. From star5ng new drill teams and ac5vi5es

to geWng ready for exci5ng new trips, the cadets are working hard to make our unit be:er. Early on in the year,

we a:ended Mexico Academy's drill meet. This is a very challenging drill meet, and we were able to place in our

unarmed exhibi5on and regula5on! We also competed at Proctor's drill meet last month and took home seven

trophies; everyone was proud of their teams! One of our new teams, the Orienteering Team, went to Patuxent,

Maryland on February 15th for Orienteering Na5onals. They did very well as a new program, one of our girls even

placed 7th overall for female varsity.

This year we have set a goal to reach 3,000 hours of community service. So far we are over halfway to our

goal! We do numerous community service events such as helping out with Bingo twice a week at two local nurs-

ing homes. We also perform color guards for many different organiza5ons that request us. Our unit also encour-

ages each cadet to seek community service opportuni5es on their own in addi5on to the events offered through

the program. It is important to reach out and become ac5vely involved in our community, and I believe that

Notre Dame NJROTC has accomplished that.

Over the next couple months, the unit has many upcoming trips that we are all looking forward to. We have

the Navy Drill Regional Compe55on in Rockland that the drill teams have been working hard to prepare for. At

the end of March, the seniors in NJROTC will be going on senior cruise in Washington D.C. We have a full i5nerary

that even includes the chance to tour the White House! For the juniors in the program, a trip to Beaver Camp in

April to learn teamwork methods and basic survivor skills is planned. The opportunity to travel with our NJROTC

unit does not end just because school does! Cadets will be able to take a trip to Ge:ysburg this upcoming August

as well. The Notre Dame NJROTC unit has had many great accomplishments this year and we are looking forward

to con5nuing this success through the end of the year and all the fun that comes with it!

T.R.Proctor NJROTC News

Proctor NJROTC cadets have been engaged in a massive project to plant Cherry Trees along the U5ca Memori-

al Parkway in tribute to the U5ca veterans Killed In Ac5on in America’s Wars. Cadets have each been assigned a

veteran to research, culmina5ng in a biography on the veteran that will be published in a local document to be

donated to the U5ca Public Library and Oneida County Historical Society. 9th grade cadets are assigned the Kore-

an War to present, 10th grade cadets are researching World War II veterans, and 11th/12th grade cadets are

researching World War I veterans. When the research is done, cadets will plant over 300 trees along the Memori-

al Parkway between the Swimming pool near Proctor Park all the way to the 9-11 Statue across from MVCC. Each

tree will have a plaque placed at its base with the name of a veteran and the cadet who researched them. Cadets

have been doing fundraisers to pay for the trees, and the Mayor and his staff have authorized an upcoming news-

paper ar5cle adver5sing the project and the request for informa5on on each veteran. The project is planned for

two phases: 1) WWI & WWII trees planted this spring and 2) Korea to present trees being planted next school

year.

On Saturday January 26th, aEer 3 weeks of intensive drill prac5ce at the U5ca Armory, Proctor NJROTC hosted

its annual drill meet with inter-service JROTC units from all over New York, including Mexico, Carthage, Schenec-

tady, and Buffalo High Schools. Cadets par5cipated in drill events such as Inspec5on, Armed drill, Unarmed drill,

and New Cadet Basic (NS1) drill, as well as Color Guard. Proctor NJROTC cadets would like to sincerely thank

GRUCMOAA for their generous dona5on/sponsorship of trophies in support of the event and LCDR (Ret) Brian

Burke, USNR for sharing his 5me that day to come and present the GRUCMOAA trophy.

Rome Free Academy AFJROTC News

The RFA AFJROTC completed their Change of Command ceremony, our outgoing Cadet Commander is Lydia

Webb, incoming Cadet Commander is Jon Vega. Selected cadets par5cipated in the Ge:ysburg Leadership event

last summer. RFA Cadets con5nue to par5cipate in Cyber Patriot, which is our computer network defense team

that trains all year and competes on a na5onal level. The team had outstanding results this year, NY20031 is the

#1 team in New York! Na5on wide the RFA team is ranked the #6 AFJROTC team! Although the cadets just missed

the final round, our team did a fantas5c job and we have made a great founda5on for next years team. In fact ,

we met with RFA's computer security teacher and we are collabora5ng with her to use her computer lab and old

laptops. Cyber Patriot mentors (Lt Bryon Fryer and Lt Brandon Froberg) are upda5ng the RFA curriculum to in-

clude some chapter contents that Cyber Patriot uses. The instruc5on will be dual-purpose serving both Cyber

Patriot and RFA Cyber Security course work. Also, the RFA cadets are looking at hos5ng and training a non-JROTC

Cyber Patriot team for RFA. Voice of Democracy (VoD), is a Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) sponsored essay con-

test. This years subject was "Is the Cons5tu5on relevant?" We had about 30 essay contestants and Cadet Jon

Vega took 1st and Cadet Pat Haugen took 2nd place in the District! The Flight Orienta5on Program (FOP) is up

and running again aEer receiving funding from the HQ. We work closely with the local Civil Air Patrol, using their

planes and pilots. All we need is good wx!

Change of Command relocates unit to Brooklyn, NY Gregory Bertolini, CPT (Ret) MP NYARNG

Members may or may not have seen the February 8 & 9 ar5cles in the U5ca Observer Dispatch announcing the

departure of the 107th Military Police Company from the U5ca Armory in a Change-of-Command ceremony relo-

ca5ng the unit to Ft. Hamilton, Brooklyn, NY.

As a former commander of the 107th MP Co, it is a sad occasion that this unit was relocated. The Officers, Non-

Commissioned Officers and Soldiers will be reassigned and become a detachment of the 206th MP Co, Latham,

NY and will s5ll drill in the U5ca Armory. I know they will be fine because they’re MP’s and they’re resilient. The

underlying loss here is the billets/advancement opportuni5es no longer available. Lost is the opportunity for

high school and college students to affiliate with a local military organiza5on (fewer billets) as is the eligibility of

those same students for tui5on assistance from New York State as members of the Na5onal Guard and a:end-

ance at a SUNY school. The 107th MP Co served New York State and our Na5on for over 200 years from Central

New York. During my affilia5on, the 107th was Federalized and deployed for Opera5on Desert Storm 90-91, re-

sponded to State ac5va5on for Woodstock II 96, and Opera5on Ice 98. It is my hearJelt wish that the Officers,

NCO’s and Soldiers assigned to the Ft. Hamilton 107th MP Co come to understand and become proud of the line-

age and honors they carry forward when they assemble around the guidon of the 107th Military Police Company.

Ge�ysburg Ba�lefield Update Fred Wieners, COL (Ret) USAF

Fred is alive and well in PA. He would enjoy taking any GRUCMOAA members out on the Ge:ysburg ba:lefield

to see where and by whom great things were suffered and done for us 150 years ago! Needless to say the best

5me to visit Ge:ysburg is in the fall aEer all of the spring school trips and summer family ou5ngs are complete. If

anyone needs sugges5ons on where to stay they can either call Fred 717-401-0085

or write an email [email protected]. Of course for our 'chapter members', Fred works for beer! Fred will be up

in Rome again teaching on Thursday mornings at the Labs in June and July. “Hope to see you then. Meanwhile, I

Chapters Conven-on on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, October 14, 15 and 16.

The conven5on will convene at the Inn on the Lake Waterfront Resort and Conference

Center in beau5ful Canandaigua at the north end of Canandaigua Lake. For details con-
