Although I have been to the Hospital at least a dozen times over the last 25 years as a parent of a patient, This was my first visit as a Board member. I can say that the Staffs dedication to exceptional care and their sincere desire to help heal children is unmatched and hasn’t changed in the slightest in the last quarter century. A few of the highlights from the meeting are: We were introduced to Kristen Carroll MD, Interim Chief of Staff. She has been on staff at the Hospital for many years and the Board was very welcoming and excited to have her as the new Chief. We were honored to have John McCabe, Executive Vice President, Kenneth Guidera, M.D. Chief Medical Officer, Peter Diaz, MD, Board of Trustees; Skip D.F. Stanaway, Board of Trustees in attendance from The headquarters in Tampa. Dr Ken Guidera mentioned that part of the vi- sion for our Hospital network is to obtain all credentialing necessary to be recognized as a level I Children's Surgical Hospital. The Board meeting convened and proceeded to the Kids Korner Ro- tunda for a special Naming Ceremony recognizing the benevolence of former Board member, Howie Herbert, his lovely wife, Bobbie, and their children. Thank you all for allowing me to represent El Jebel in Salt Lake. Cheers Ed McKenna

Board of Governors Meeting

Nobels,

I want to express how honored I was to represent El Jebel at the Shrine Hospital Board of Governors meeting on August 18th 2014. A few of the highlights from the meeting are: • We were introduced to Kristen Carroll MD, Interim Chief of Staff. She has been on staff at the Hospital for many years and the Board was very welcoming and excited to have her as the new Chief. • We were honored to have John McCabe, Executive Vice President, Kenneth Guidera, M.D. Chief Medical Officer, Peter Diaz, MD, Board of Trustees; Skip D.F. Stanaway, Board of Trustees in attendance from The headquarters in Tampa. Dr Ken Guidera mentioned that part of the vi-sion for our Hospital network is to obtain all credentialing necessary to be recognized as a level I Children's Surgical Hospital.

• The Board meeting convened and proceeded to the Kids Korner Ro-tunda for a special Naming Ceremony recognizing the benevolence of former Board member, Howie Herbert, his lovely wife, Bobbie, and their children. Thank you all for allowing me to represent El Jebel in Salt Lake. Cheers Ed McKenna

``Today is September 1 and Fall is only 22 days away. It is hard to believe that Summer is almost gone and Fall is coming too fast, as I can smell Fall is in the air!

Our Potentate’s Club Golf Tournament was on August 4, with 16 Nobles and 3 guests. Jerry Davis shot a nice round for a 79 low gross, just in front of Jim Teagarden. The Potentate did come in 4th with an 88. Indian Peaks was in great shape and we had a BBQ after the tournament. Thank you to Jim Teagarden and the Sandblasters for a fun time!

August 6, our last concert at Fiddlers Green with Boston. Noble Mike Trevathan said the volunteers were few in numbers, but sold their hearts out fund-raising for our Salt Lake City Hospital. For the two concerts we helped raise over $5,400! Thank you Nobles and Ladies!

On August 9, the parade in Castle Rock started off a little “rocky”, but Nobles Joel Roche and Bob Paustian rolled up the sleeves and made it a very enjoyable parade. I think next year Castle Rock will be ready for El Jebel!

We did not go dark this Summer! I feel we had three more fun meetings this year! Maybe in time old traditions will go by the way side and start with a new one, as the Summer months are our most busy time of year … what do you think? August 11, No-bles John Buchanan and P.P. Matt Raia rekindled some memories of years gone passed, with a Rusty Fez degree. Good job John and Matt! The “For La-dies Only” program with Trina Barnes, Paralegal, on family law and women’s issues was very informing. Thanks to Debbie Raia for coordinating all the Ladies programs this year.

Saturday, August 16, was a fun time at the Ma-sonic Family Picnic at the Eastern Star Masonic Re-tirement Community. If you have not been out at the Community lately, you will not even recognize it.

August 23, was the SPORTSMEN’S RAFFLE!!!

Thank you one and all, another good job!

We will give you an update on CSSA in Tulsa, Oklahoma August 27-31 next month.

SOMETHING NEW!

We have a new way for you to sign up for dinner. Right under the Red Fez on our home page, you will see Event Registration. This will take you out to our new market place. We were asked if something comes

up, can they cancel? YES, but you must do it 7 days before the event. As you know, we are having our meals brought in and we only order for who we have reservations for. So don’t be the one that just shows up without a reservation, we may not have enough food for you.

Anna’s Walk - Do you remember Anna? Anna is now in Missouri! We will try and keep you up on Anna’s Walk. We have her Facebook link on our webpage, or you can check out her webpage at www.annaswalk.com.

Well, that pretty much puts to bed another month! What’s coming up?

September 6, we will be at the Arvada parade (Call Out Parade).

September 8, will be the Awards Night at El Jebel. Come support all Nobles who have earned a new Jewell. We have been busy this summer!

September 20 is our Call Out Parade at Broom-field! Broomfield is again the home of our 2015 Cir-cus (May 1, 2 and 3, 2015). Come out and let Broomfield know we are having our El Jebel Shrine Circus in their town! After the parade we will have a picnic.

If you are looking for the Ladies Luncheon, we are going to combine that with the Nobility Appreciation in November, so we can all celebrate together for a great job, well done for El Jebel. Watch the Red Fez for further details.

hope we have kept you informed of the goings ons at El Jebel. If not, are you getting our e-mails to you from El Jebel? If you are not on El Jebel’s e-mail list, go to El Jebel’s website (www.EljebelShrine.Org) and sign-up. While you are on the website, snoop around, you might just find out what is going on in your Temple!

Until next month, keep looking for the Brother Ma-son that has not found the FUN yet and ask him to come join us! Can we get enough new members to have a Ceremonial this Fall? Remember Just One More… Having fun this year? It is not too late to join in on the FUN!

Fraternally, Just One More…Phil

His was a voice that spoke with cheer, And felt like music on the ear.

BOULDER SHRINE CLUB – By Dick Tajbl We start out with some sad news that Brother Dick

Tajbl passed away on August 18th. A long time member

and about forever the Secretary of this club. He certainly was a great supporter of El Jebel and an outstanding Shriner. We will have a moment of remembrance for him at our next meeting. Our sympathies and prayers go out to his family. Brother Dick, you will be sorely missed!

We had an outstanding picnic in August at Ellen Tye’s lovely home in Boulder. Twenty-seven of us enjoyed a BBQ pork dinner with everyone contributing side dishes and Ellen and her son, Rick, providing homemade ice cream for dessert. Starting at 4:00 p.m. made it a perfect early evening as the sun set behind the flatirons only a short distance away. Thank you, Ellen, for your gracious hospitality in providing such a great outdoor setting for our picnic and the work you put into it!

Saturday, September 13th, will be our next outing

which takes us to the Wild Animal Sanctuary east of Hud-son on I-76 for a tour led by Dee and Dale Pierce. Instead of our usual club breakfast at 9:00 a.m., we will meet at 8:00 a.m. for breakfast and then plan to leave at 9:00 a.m. to drive/car pool out to the sanctuary. Afterwards, those who would like, can stop in the town of Hudson at the Pep-per Pod or El Faro for lunch. If you haven’t been out there in the last several months, there is much new to see! It sits on 700 acres with over 450 rescued carnivores of every type. It is like the Serengeti on the plains of Colorado. Entry fee is $15 per adult and $7.50 for kids 12 and under. Suggest you bring appropriate clothing for the day includ-ing hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and comfortable walking shoes. You may want to bring water, however, they do have refreshment stands out there as well. It is wheel chair accessible and they even have some limited number to rent if you need. You can find out more about it by going online to: www.wildanimalsanctuary.org. All are invited to join us on our own safari to the Wild Animal Sanctuary and don’t forget your cameras!

November 1st we will be going to Johnstown at the

Candlelight Theatre for the delightful musical performance of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. This will again be a Saturday afternoon matinee including a great meal! Con-tact Loren Pierce at (303) 457-6981 for reservations.

Caring Ladies By Lindy Wazny For our August meeting we went to The English

Teacup. This was a fun place to eat. If you have never been there I recommend it. We were pleased to have Phil Hause, Potentate with us to bring us up to date on shrine Activities. Margaret Benton will be honored at the shrine meeting on 8 September 2014. She has a long history of volunteering with the outreach program and the Medical Staff. Our meeting 10 September will be at Mona Eck-ley’s home.

El Jebel Computer Club By George Van Trump

After the program, a business meeting will be held about the Club’s future photo shoots at the El Jebel and future programs for the Club meetings.

All Shriners are invited to attend and join our Club; dues are just $12.00 per year; 1st year’s dues are free for new members. Wives and guests are al-ways welcome.

Directors Staff – by Don Douglass A quote from our President Ron Dunsmore: Quote: A snowflake is one of God’s most fragile creations, but look what they can do when they stick together.

Nobles and Ladies, a friendly reminder to all, that the Shrine stated meetings continue in the month of Sep-tember and that our Director’s Staff business meetings also continue, and the ladies are always welcome to attend. Therefore, please plan on attending each business meet-ing. Our Work nights are on HOLD, UNLESS you are NO-TIFIED BY OUR DIRECTOR, which is usually done via email. Our business meetings are held at 7:00 pm in the computer club room, lower level of the shrine; enter through the Director’s Staff door, on the first Wednesday of each month, (12 times a year).

The Director’s Staff Dances also occur every month of the year. You will notice in Noble John’s Direc-tor’s Staff Dance column, that he is looking for Hosts and Hostess, because there are several singles that are attend-ing the dances and they are looking for dance partners. So if your noble or lady does not like to dance, but you do, here is your chance for an evening of fun.

Nobles our parades continue. If you can come on out and ride with one of the parade units. Nobles remem-ber that you must wear your Fez, in order to ride in a pa-rade. Please keep checking the RED FEZ for parade dates, time and locations. Let’s show our pride in El Jebel Shrine.

Sportsman’s Raffle Our 4th annual Sportsman’s Raffle was held on August 23, 2014 at El Jebel Shrine. If memory is still serving me well, I believe that two Director’s Staff Ladies won prizes. I think that I heard that Lady Sandy Hoblit won a gun. Better watch out Bob, how is her aim? I believe I heard them an-nounce that A. Stewart won a prize and could this be Lady Annette Stewart winning an indoor sky diving experience? I almost forgot Noble Ron Dunsmore won some more am-munition, as if he needed any more.

Nobles and Ladies, let’s keep everyone that is un-der the weather, as well as, our men and women fighting to protect our freedom, and those members of law enforce-ment, fire fighters, and paramedics in our thoughts and prayers.

Nobles and Ladies, those of you who attend our

monthly business meeting are aware of this, however, for those of you who do not. I am constantly looking for things to include in my Red Fez article. Therefore, if any-one has anything shrine related that they would like to see in my article, please email me the information, (a hard copy is preferred for my records), and I will try to include the information. However, there are two things you must be aware of. I must submit my article by the 15th of month before the information is seen in the Red Fez, and that if anyone has selected to receive a hard copy of the Red Fez, they may not get their copy until around the tenth of the month containing the information you requested me to include. My email address is [email protected].

If anyone has any information concerning any member of the Director’s Staff, or widow, who we have not heard from for some time, (you can get these names by looking in your Director’s Staff roster), please contact them and report on them at our next business meeting or have them send a card or contact our secretary. We sure would like to know how they are doing. Our secretary’s name and address is Wayne L. Livermore, JR, 11379 W. Ten-nessee Drive, Lakewood, Co., 80226. His home telephone number is 303-985-2604. His email address is [email protected], for those that prefer email.

Englewood Shrine Club by Don Phelps At our August Social we met at Kent and Mona Eckley's for a great time. There were about thir-ty people including Jobs Daughters. We were honoring the Jobs Daughters that serve our meals at our Socials during the year. The theme was Hawaiian and the music was provided by Tom Yok (all Hawaiian). Now for the Social in September (you are invited). We will be meeting at Radiant Temple (2nd and Acoma) on Septem-ber 13th at 5:30 pm for Social Hour (cheapest drinks in town) and good fellowship. The theme is Fall. The meal will be Pot Roast with roasted veggies at 6:30. The music for listening and dancing will be provided by C.C. Collier. All this only costs $18 per person. Reservations are re-quired. To make reservations call Don Phelps at (303) 471-2481 or email at [email protected]. R.S.V.P by September 10th. I know you won't be sorry. If you are, I will pay for your dinner.

Our next trip to Black Hawk will be on September 11th. The bus leaves from the east lot of the Shrine at 10:00 am sharp. We get back to the Shrine at about 3:45 pm. The Casi-no gives a voucher that is good for a free buffet lunch. The cost is $10 which goes to the Eng-lewood Shrine Club. The Casino pays for the bus. We travel with the Nile and have a good time. We need more people to keep the

bus. Come and join us. To make reservations call me at the number above or just show up by 9:45 am. I don't know how many Shriners read the, but if you do, there must be something that would interest you. Have a GREAT life. Jeffco Shrine Club by Jim Cram Our Divan Rep. Larry Clark attended our luncheon on Au-gust 6th and made an excellent report on the status of the sale of the Shrine building and the redevelopment plan for the area. Although the signing has been delayed, it ap-pears all problem areas have been addressed including the preservation of the historical value of the building.

A Get Well Wish to Doyle Roberts who has been battling a severe head cold for over a month. He did feel well enough to attend our August 13th luncheon.

Our Sympathy is extended to the family of Dr. Edna Webster. The memorial service was held on July 20th at Epiphany Lutheran Church. Edna graduated from the CU Medical School in 1946. Her late husband was Daniel (Dan) Webster who was an active member of the Club. We believe that Dan fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

Our Sympathy is extended to the family of Casey Metcalf. The memorial services were held on Wednesday July 23rd at the Arvada Presbyterian Church. Casey was born on May 7, 1909, and passed away on July 3rd 2014. Casey was an active member of his Lodge, Commandery, Consistory, Council, Royal Arch, and seven Shrine Inter-bodies. He was President of the JeffCo Shrine Club for the year 1974.

Herb Schillereff reported on his 4-day fishing trip to a special area near Buffalo, Wyoming. He was accom-panied by his fishing and hunting friend and they did catch their respective trout limits. They watched a 6-point elk jump the fence, two bull moose feeding, and a large num-ber of deer with fawns. Great trip.

Jack Russell discussed and displayed a catalog of a 2014 USA philatelic listing of Forever Stamps. Of partic-ular interest is the Christmas Gingerbread House stamp. There were 7 additional listings of Christmas stamps. Also listed were Circus stamps. The stamps are easily availa-ble by calling the US Postal Service 1-800 –782-6724.

Keystone Kops – by Larry Clark

Bizzee, Bizzee. The Kops participated in a pa-rade, our Kop’s meeting, the Shrine Meeting, the Shrine Family Picnic, the sales of Raffle Tickets and the fourth Sportsman Raffle, all in August.

A big Kops Welcome Matt Madrid, our newest Kop. Matt attended the El Jebel meeting on Monday and then came back to the Temple for the Kops meeting on Tuesday. He joined El Jebel during our Spring Ceremoni-al and now joined the Kops. We look forward to Matt and his Lady actively participating in Kops activities. The parade was the Douglas County Fair and Rodeo pa-rade in Castle Rock. We had a good run across Plum Creek Parkway, up Wilcox, and back down to Plum Creek Parkway, friendly crowds, lots of crowds. After the parade

9

the Kops continued with their family plans the rest of the day.

I heard that several of the Kops, Ladies, families, and friends made it out to the Eastern Star / Shrine Family Picnic. The picnic was a fun time of good friends, good food, and good picnic type stuff.

The Kops also had several Kops and several La-dies at the Sportsman Raffle. These men and women pitched in at many different places to help make this Raffle a great success. I understand that at least one Kop won a prize in the drawing. The rest of us had an opportunity to eat and drink as much as we wanted. All in All it was a great day.

Our next meeting will be September 9, 2014. See you there.

Loveland Shrine Club by Barney Blatherwell

Our meeting in August was "small and inti-mate" (very relaxed). It was great to see Ann Hansen do-ing better as she continues her recovery. Also send your healing thoughts to Ruby Dungan.

Our next meeting on Sept 10 will be a mile-stone: Bob Chenoweth will receive his gold collar present-ed by Larry Clark; come out and give Bob a big round of applause for this huge achievement . There will also be discussions about our dark months reverting back to

summertime; call Thad at 970-669-3069 for reser-vations.

Duane Crapser brought us up-to-date on cur-rent and future Shrine events. Did you know that a new Shrine temple has been opened in Brazil? That brings the number of temples to 196

world-wide; wouldn't it be fantastic to visit all of them at least once? Put that one on your bucket list. Duane also announced that the hospitals have bumped up the age for release from 18 to 26; where there is a need, the Shrine will provide it.

EL JEBEL LEGION OF HONOR By Ed Rich-ards

Well it’s me again and I have good news some and not so very good news. First of all I would like to say thank you to a few members. To our Chaplain Chuck Ste-vens for the only one that was carrying the Colors at the Castle Rock Parade and to Gordon Gaskin who was the only one to post the Colors at the Stated Meeting on this past week. My Fez goes off to you both for being there when needed. The parade was great as there were many people that attended, but it was a little hassle getting lined up. Thanks to our 1

st Lt Cmdr/Divan rep/Parade Marshal

Joel Roche and Bob Paustian who is one of the Asst Pa-rade Marshals they got it done. Also I guess that I never thank the Chanters as they always provide a cooler full of burritos and drinks to every parade, thank you gentlemen if you read this article as this one will be my last one. That is the bad news. My wife Pam is still in California with her mother as she is not doing well after her fall on her 96

th

birthday, breaking her right hip and her right arm in two

places. She needs a lot of care, so we are going to make a temporary move out to California for how ever long it will take for her to be able to live by herself. At this point she cannot live by herself. We are not selling our house, we are just taking clothes and cars out there for our conven-ience. So we really don’t have a time frame as to when we will be back. I know that Joel Roche is dropping out of line because next year is going to be a challenge for him, as he will have too many things on his plate. But I had lunch with 2

nd Lt Cmdr Eddie McGrady and his wife Carol and he

is ready to step up and take the Commanders Job. I know that he will have plenty of help from our Past Command-ers. And I know that Eddie will do a good job! We just need a few men to step up and fill the vacancies. I want to thank all of the members of the Legion of Honor for their help that they have given me over the years that I have been Commander, I couldn’t have done it without you. God bless you all! So until I see you again………..LIVE WELL, LAUGH OFTEN AND DEFINITELY LOVE MUCH. P.S We are going to miss all of you very much so please keep in touch by email [email protected] or by my cell phone 303-908-1399. I would love to hear from all of you.

Anniversaries - Ron & Patti Pitcock ’68 - your it, this month.

Golden Gate State Park hosted by Ken & Jill Johnson in the absence of Henry & Dorothy Hering on August 7 thru 10. There were four rigs present and several people came up Saturday and Satur-day evening for supper.

CSSA will meet in Tulsa, OK on August 27 to 31. A good crowd is expected.

The September Mariners meeting will be 9/11/2014.

The September Cruise will be at John Martin Res-ervoir near Las Animas. Hosts to be decided. This is very good fishing and we expect a good turnout.

NORTHEAST Colorado Shrine Club by Charlie Johnson As our Shrine Club gathered for our monthly meeting, the fresh, cool, air of the early morning seemed to be sig-naling that summer is on its last legs and that fall is com-ing. This transition does not mean that all the scorching days are behind us but it does look like change is nearer that the calendar indicates. Our meeting included positive reports on the up-coming York Rite Sessions, the results of the Grand Lodge budget session, and a list of the local Lodges summer events. We reviewed the response to our participation in local pa-rades and donated some money to the Sterling American Legion Post so they can help with some of their distressed members. We discussed our new logo for our Inner Body and noted that the original image was from a picture paint-ed by one of our members. As most of you know, our club meets for breakfast each month and we often bring our Masonic friends to join us. So, our standing invitation is offered to all Masons to meet

with us on the second Monday of the month at 6:00 a.m. at the Sinclair Overland Trail Café at the Atwood Exit #115 off I-76. We guarantee a hearty breakfast with lots of friendly Shriners.

OPTARS By J & J Taylor DON’T FORGET!!! Past Potentate, Matt Raia and Deb-bie, will be repeating the slide show and talk on Rwanda and the Mountain Gorillas. This, on September 9

th, and the

October 14th programs are on the second Tuesday of the

month. The reason for this temporary change is that the principal “program-givers” will not be available on Optars’ regular 1

st Tuesday. So at the September 9

th dinner meet-

ing we will meet (room TBA) at the Shrine starting at 6:00 for a happy social half-hour, have a quick meeting, eat some dinner and then have the program. At the October 14

th dinner meeting Ed Hamm will be

showing his Scotland pictures at the White Fence Farm. Be sure to call our Treasurer, George Moreno, 303-455-4174, for any dinner reservations on September 9

Pipe Band – by Kent Burns

Summer is almost over. We know that because the Highland Games at Estes Park are this first weekend in September. Little early this year – they are always the first weekend after Labor Day, but that holiday is also early this year. Holding the games so late in the year is usually a crap-shoot with the weather. There have been years where we froze to death in a blizzard. There have also been years when we baked in the hot sun at Massed Bands. But it has never snowed on the parade. Came close a time or two, but the worst was when it snowed Fri-day night/Saturday morning. There was no snow on the streets or sidewalks, but the field was a mess with water ankle-deep everywhere (which really raised havoc with white spats). It had been a heavy snow and the various band tents suffered mightily. The wet snow bent most of our tent poles (which had to be replaced) but it did not tear the tent itself.

That is fairly analogous to our Band of late – the heavy-weight “snow” of the passing years has bent many of our members, but has never torn the “canvas” of our dedication to the reason for our existence. The other bands in the area have a different agenda. They perform to raise money for their main goal – competition. Our Band performs to raise money for the hospitals. It has been an up-hill fight, but this Band has proven itself a very good artistic unit with a repertoire equal to any other in the area. And our tunes are crowd-pleasers, tunes the average Joe recognizes and with which he can identify. They are up-beat “toe-tappers” that keep the audience interested. So as we play our “trade” in Estes this you can be assured we will make the Shrine proud, entertain the crowds, and do it all with the dignity that comes from years of withstanding the uncertainties and vicissitudes of time. Tempus fugit!

Provost Guard by Casey Campbell

The parade in Castle Rock after getting organized turned out great. We love to see the children enjoying the clowns that participated. All entries with just a few of the vehicles that had to drop out a little early for overheating problems, are fine examples of ElJebel support. Thanks to all of you for a fun day.

Sept is another month for parades and fun for all. The up coming parade in Arvada is just around the corner and then on to Broomfield for another fun day. I will report next month with the results of the Hawkins Black Powder Rifle the provost raffled off at the Sports-mans Raffle.

Also the CSSA trip will be behind us and we are looking forward to bringing home shooting trophies. Recog-nition to all that attended CSSA, it is a commitment that takes a lot of time and planning not to say how much time was spent at the shooting ranges preparing to be as good as we can possibly be at the CSSA events. For those that have been there before, we know how sharp the competi-tion is.

If you are interested in joining a fun group of guys and gals, yes the gals do shoot and for the most part are better shooters than the guys, ask a provost person how you to can become involved with a fine sporting group.

I personally again want to thanks our Illustrious Potentate, Divan and office staff for all their hard work and dedication they have given to having a successful year. Till next month, we pray for those in need and also fast recov-ery of those who are ailing.

RADOPS by Sid Wright As most of you know by now, Dave Stoners

mother passed away on July 15, and due to the deadline for submitting reports to the “Fez”, I missed being able to report it in the August issue by one day. It is regrettable that this comes so late, but our sympathy and concerns for Dave and Barbara are no less sincere.

There’s not much news coming out of the mem-bership this month, however Gerry Villhauer recently an-nounced that he is putting up a new beam antenna. It’s a Force Twelve XR6 eleven element beam, and covers all bands 20 meters through 6 meters. Sounds great! Expect

to hear Gerry on all bands from now on. As you may know, Force Twelve refers to the Beaufort scale of wind speed indicating hurricane force winds. Apparently the Company founders wanted to emphasize the structural strength of their products when they selected the name. Incidentally, I think they’re great antennas, I have one.

The repeater committee has been meeting regu-larly on the air regarding the temporary disposition of the UHF repeater. I can’t say we’ve made a lot of progress, but that’s due to the uncertainty concerning the location, adequacy, and timing of El Jebel’s move to a new facili-ty. We have however come up with the outline of a plan, and have assigned action items to various members. If you or anyone you know would be willing to host the re-peater at their house either temporarily (or permanently), please contact a member of the committee. We are also looking for a place to store it in case we can’t find an oper-ating location when El Jebel moves. By the way, the on air committee meeting is an experiment, and is working very well. Thanks to Michael Marcus for making it work.

Have you sent a message to your Congress per-son requesting his/her cosponsoring HR 4969? If not, you need to do so, especially those of you who live in residen-tial communities which restrict the erection of outdoor an-tennas. The amateur radio community needs to swamp Congress with requests to cosponsor this bill. Go to the ARRL website (ARRL.org) and type HR 4969 in the web-site search box. There you will find everything you could ever want to know about the bill, and how to contact your Congress person. There is also a link to a form letter if you don’t want to write your own letter. If we all keep plugging away at it, we can finally make it happen.

A Happy birthday to Ken Behrens who hit ma-jor milestone number 70 on August 13th. Ken, we all wish you many more happy and healthy years. And finally, re-member that amateur radio is a contact sport. So get on the air and make some contacts.

73, Sid

RV ROAMERS By J & J Taylor A bunch of us Roamers went to Sterling Reservoir for the July outing. It was not full of mosquitoes as we feared, but full of dead fish! It seams (as the Rangers told us) that the carp, which swim close to the surface got hit by a hailstorm a few days before. We’re not sure of the validi-ty of this story, but nobody else had a better explanation. Could be that they ate something, and carp aren’t really “protected” in these waters…. We did have lots of bug spray used on the trillions of flies (because of the dead carp?), and of course, we ate lots of food. We always have good intentions when coming to the buffet table, but it’s all so delicious, we can’t resist! At Sterling Reservoir, Roamers members Dave & Su-zanne Cowan, unbeknownst to all of us, were camped in the same circle drive as all our “reserved” (I say that loose-ly!) RV Roamers. We had wonderful weekend visits with them, as we hope they did with us! Henry Hering, president, is still recuperating, but we think he and Dorthy are going on the September Caravan! Dalene Kelley, Diane Crook’s sister, is recuperating from breast cancer surgery, and will be joining us soon. As

most of you know, she and her grandson have been going to several of our outings as our perpetual guests (J & J were perpetuals for years!), and we are always glad to see them. We just can’t stop talking about Sterling Reservoir! We took a “short boat ride” (4 ½ hours!) with Rick, Crooks’ son-in-law---what a wonderful tour. But we probably won’t be back there unless someone with a boat talks us into it! The Crooks’ daughter, Lynne, always takes her doggy for a swim, both in life jackets! See photo. Around 15 rigs of Roamers members are busy planning the annual Caravan, this time to Branson. We’ll let you know next month how much fun it was, if there is time to write about it!

years to accomplish this task and his grandson who was his guest for the day must have provided the proper coaching. July 30

th, Monthly Luncheon

Claude Akridge who hosted the Green Valley Ranch outing felt that with more notice to members the participation could have been better. Notices will be given out earlier and mailed to all, so that those not attending the monthly luncheon or unable to access the information on web sight might have adequate notice of fu-ture golf outings. The Potentate's Cup golf outing will be taking place at Indian Peaks Golf Course, hosted by Jim Teagarden, as of this date, twenty-four individuals were registered to play. The outing is open to all members of El Jebel. Fossil Trace Golf Club will be the location on August 19

If we feel we have a problem with deer, elk and geese on the courses we play on, it could be like this: Photo is of kangaroos meandering around a golf course and one is a sign that is common to golf courses in

Australia .

The Mountain Men of El Jebel By, Tim (Talon) Johansson

Greetings trappers and pilgrims! It is good. Now that there has been a break in the weather we have had more members at the meeting/shoots this summer. The annual pig roast was enjoyed with our brothers in Provost Guard and all of our friends and families. Thanks again to the Lewis Family for their work and hospitality! By the time this is published someone will be the lucky winner of that Hawken rifle. Maybe you.

On a historical note, 200 years ago John Jacob Astor’s Pacific Fur Company fort at Astoria was in cha-os. The War of 1812 had the men of both Astor’s employ and the North West Fur Company, a British company, won-dering about possession of Astoria. Rather than face battle from the superior forces of a British ship, that must surely have been on the way to the mouth of the Columbia River, a plan to sell the fort to the Nor’westers was being made. These changes were signaling the end of Astor’s efforts in the Pacific Northwest. Meanwhile, across the continent, an historic symbol was in the making. Septem-ber of this year is the 200

th anniversary of the writing of the

words and music for the Star Spangled Banner. The Mountain Men of El Jebel get together to

shoot on the fourth Saturday of the month at the Lazy Heart Ranch north of Golden. We welcome guests and will give a full explanation on how to load and shoot safe-ly. Contact one of us for more details. Until next time, May your prayers to the Great Spirit be carried aloft on the wings of the mighty eagle.

WESTERN COLORADO SHRINE CLUB

(WCSC) by Steve Thomas WCSC is still stumbling around in the dark. Coming

back in September. A good time was had by all those who could attend the Cir-cus Appreciation Party July 25th. We had a Shriner girl and her family join us. What a pleasure they were. There was a silent auction of some of Pete Loncar's Shriner stuff and we sent $105 to Salt Lake Hospital in Pete's memory.

5th Annual Western Colorado Golf Tournament: By the time the Red Fez for September is published, the Western Colorado Golf Tournament, originally scheduled for September 6th, would already have come and gone. Unfortunately, due to lack of support from the Club, this event was cancelled. We had asked for help all year, be-ginning with last year’s tournament, and at our last meeting one member came to me afterward and offered to help. This was not a Tee Off Club event, but an entire Western Colorado Club outing. All of the donations have been re-turned to the sponsors, and I have answered many calls from past participants but informed them that it has been cancelled. Many outsiders had asked if they could help, but I said Thank You, but this was a Shrine-sponsored event. This was getting to be a large and popular golf tournament in the valley, and was told it will be missed. I do want to thank the helpers in the past for a job well done! Bill Bras-sette, Tournament Director

Hospital Coordinator: Bob Emrich said there were

seven trips to Salt Lake City and one flight to Sacramento. Civic Parades: Palisade parade had a line up time change of 8:30am with parade starting at 9:00am.

September parades are as follows: Mon, Sept 1 – Ridgway Labor Day Rodeo parade

line up at 9:00am. Parade at 10:00am Sat, Sept 20 – Green River Melon Days line up at

9:00am. Parade at 10:00am Sat, Sept 27 – Fruita Fall Festival line up at

9:00am. Parade at 10:00am Clowns- There were two clowns who entertained

kids at Mesa View School July 30th. Thanks Jerald "Grumpy" Conyers and Michael "Pooh Bear" Thayer. I hear they had a little help with the balloon tying. We had six clowns show for Olathe Corn Fest Parade. Bob "Boomer" Beeson and his lovely lady Sally were back with us for this one. Glad to see y'all back. I'll be heading to Idaho so Pooh will fill in for the rest of the time. “Grumpy” and “Stubby” went to Hotchkiss for the Delta County Fair pa-rade.

Scooter Patrol: Four riders went to Rifle for the Garfield County Fair parade. Scooters met for breakfast before the parade and had a fun get together afterwards. Thanks to David Krogh and Dale Tomlinson for coming out and supporting us. Scooters are having a social party at Edgewater Brewery on August 19th.

Tee Offs: are planning a golf outing for September 28th. Contact Don Miller 243-2443.

Tri-Co At our July meeting at the Stone House in Montrose We didn't have a door prize as the person who got it last time wasn't present this meeting. Mentor Goehring won the cash prize and said he's going to use it to help prop up the economy. I told you that when Jacki won she was going to invest in real-estate. She used it for a down payment on a bag of potting soil. Don't know when we can move in? Our August meeting is moving to Gun-nison at Palisades Restaurant and the day change of Au-gust 30th has to be made so our Sec. Treas. can take care of other business. Sept. we will have to meet on a Sunday because of the parade schedule so it's Sept. 21st and we'll do a cookout, place to be determined. Thinking of doing a $5 a head charge so it won't cost the club anything.

Vagabonds: Doni O’Hair reports that Chief Norton of the Vagabond tribe, presided over the July gathering at Vega. Weather was uncooperative, but we still had fun. The ladies know a couple of interesting stores in Collbran. The massive mudslide east of Collbran was visible from the road. It definitely scarred the mountainside. We were at Rifle in July and will be at Crawford in August. If you’re up for adventure, join us. Steve says: Top 10 things I learned to do at the Water Park this summer:

1. "See" a shark in the wave pool and start screaming. 2. Hesitate as long as you can before going down a waterslide like your scared. 3. Do the above at the little kids slide. 4. Take over the little ship in the kiddie pool. 5. Get cramps and "drown" in the kiddie pool. 6. Try to surf in the wave pool. 7. Persuade the lifeguard to let you go down the waterslide backwards. 8. Pretend to fall asleep while sitting down, before going down a slide. 9. Try to get back up the slide once you've gone down. 10. Skinny
