The British also simplified the names of Indian terms and cities which were difficult to

pronounce and changed them to suit their requirements Vijayawada become Bezwada,

Kakinada become Coconada, Visakhapatnam became Vizagpatem etc. And it is interesting to

note that Indians are reverting to the original names or their version of the original names. It

would be interesting to make a study of the place names and find out the changes that have

taken place. To do so, one can visit a library and refer to the relevant books or check out the

information on the Internet.

III. Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow: 5x1=5 There are different forms of environmental pollution. Air pollution is caused by the burning of

coal and oil. It can damage the earth’s vegetation and cause respiratory problems in humans. A second type of pollution is noise pollution. It is the result of the noise of aeroplanes and heavy traffic. Further, loud music is also a cause of noise pollution, which has been seen to affect people’s hearing, and give them severe headaches and high blood pressure.

Raja Ravi Varma(1848-1906), who is sometimes described as the father of modern Indian painting, achieved recognition for his depiction of scenes from the Hindu epics. He was born in the royal family of Kilimanoor, which is 75 kilometers from Thiruvanthapuram. He showed talent as an artist at a very young age and received the patronage of the Maharaja of Travancore, who arranged for his training under the palace painter, Ramaswamy Naidu. He was later taught oil painting by the British painter, Theodor Jenson.
