Medication Consent for a Boarding Student

School staff and their employers have a duty of care under common law to ensure student safety and proper use of medicine when assistance is provided.

A school policy has been developed to ensure that school personnel responsible for administering medication are appropriately instructed and are working within school protocols.

Parents are responsible for updating this information via the School Health Centre (+61 7 55 777207)

Boarders’ Leave

Please nominate the people with whom your daughter is permitted to take day or weekend leave in 2017. The Boarders’ Approved Hosts List can be updated with additional hosts throughout the year, via Boarders’ Reception. If, at any time, you wish to add to the list of those with whom your daughter may take leave, please fax the information to Boarders’ Reception Fax: 07 55 777329 Fax: International +61 7 55 777 329).

Please think carefully before you nominate people to be responsible for your daughter. No student will be released to a person under the age of 21 unless special permission is granted by the Head of Boarding. Proof of age may be required from young hosts. Parents may arrange, with the School, for a sibling (under the minimum age of 21) to take out a sister, by obtaining special permission. Older siblings may take out their sisters.

It is also unwise to allow your daughter to be signed out with a family for a weekend if a parent/adult is not in attendance for the entire weekend. This places your daughter in a situation where she may be unsupervised. Please ensure you speak to the parents of the family with whom your daughter is spending the weekend, and satisfy yourself that your daughter will be adequately supervised and cared for.

Parents/guardians should understand and accept the following conditions:

When giving permission for my daughter to go out or stay with friends or relatives, the parents/friends/guardians take complete responsibility for the supervision and care of my daughter while she is away from the School.

In these cases I pass on this responsibility to the people I have nominated on the Boarders’ Approved Hosts List.

When nominating persons on my daughter’s leave list, it will be assumed that no further permission will be sought from me when my daughter requests leave with the nominated hosts. (NOTE: If you wish to be notified, please do not enter names on the list).

All hosts must be over 21, and young drivers may be required to present proof of age when collecting my daughter.

With the exception of siblings, people under 21 years of age cannot be placed on the weekend/overnight leave list or sign out any Boarder.

Notification of leave, with people other than those on this list, is notified by Fax/Email to Boarders’ Reception.

Restricted Boarders’ Leave – Friday, 17 November to Sunday, 19 November, 2017 (Schoolies Weekend)

Boarders will not be given permission to leave the Boarding School unless signed out by a parent during the weekend commencing Friday 17 November to Sunday 19 November. There are no exceptions to this rule.

This weekend has traditionally been a restricted leave period due to “Schoolies Week” held on the Gold Coast at this time. As a consequence of the thousands of school leavers who visit the Gold Coast during this week, as well as the unsavoury adults who would exploit these school leavers; there is evidence of unsafe behaviour on the Gold Coast during this period, which is not conducive to safety.

For this reason, the School requires all Boarders remain in residence during Schoolies Week UNLESS they are being supervised by staff or by their own parents.

Boarders’ Activities The Boarding School offers a comprehensive programme of activities, events and outings for the girls, held mostly on weekends. This programme is diverse in range so that all interests are met and the girls are able to make use of the attractions and events associated with the Gold Coast. Also, it provides activities which are age appropriate and allow the development of social, cultural and sporting interests and skills. The programme for each term is published on the School’s website. The safety and welfare of the girls involved in the activity is a priority, both on and off campus, and high standards of behaviour and appearance are expected from all the girls at all times. Girls will be permitted to be involved in the activities, grouped in the categories outlined below, after parental approval is given through accepting the Terms and Conditions on Parent Lounge. These Terms and Conditions provide detailed assessment of the risks involved and the management of these risks, and will be posted on Parent Lounge in January, 2017. Alternative arrangements can be made for those parents unable to access a reliable internet source. The following general information is provided: Beach Excursions: Beach activities are offered in Terms 1 and 4. In order to participate in these activities, the girls will be required to complete a School-based Beach Safety Awareness Practical test, to ensure they have the knowledge and skills necessary to enjoy the beach safely. Movie Excursions: Movie theatres are located at Australia Fair and Pacific Fair Shopping Centres, and girls are only permitted to view movies according to the Australian Government Film Classification, unless parent permission is given to view a specific movie. This will be requested should the occasion arise. Shopping Excursions: Girls walk or catch the tram to Australia Fair and Ferry Road Markets or Pacific Fair Shopping Centres (permissions relate to specific year levels). The following are guidelines:

Girls in Years 11 and 12 may attend Australia Fair or Ferry Road Markets on any

afternoon or on weekends in pairs, for allocated periods of time.

Girls in Years 11 and 12 may travel by tram to Pacific Fair on weekends, for up to 4

hours, in pairs or larger groups.

Girls in Year 10 may attend Australia Fair in groups of 3 or more on two afternoons per

week and once on the weekend for allocated periods of time.

Girls in Years 6-9 attend Australia Fair accompanied by a staff member on one

afternoon per week.

Boarders’ Return Package 2017 Page 7 T:\JamesAdmin\Boarding\2017 Boarding Commencement Booklet.docx

Girls in Year 6 are accompanied by a staff member who will remain with the girls at all

times, during Terms 1-3.

Shopping trips to Australia Fair, Pacific Fair or Robina are often organized as a weekend activity. Other such activities may include, but are not limited to, a visit to Max Brenner, a walk to the Broadwater, Outdoor movies, and a visit to Ferry Road Markets. Theme Parks, Markets, Ice Skating, Indoor Rock Climbing, Paddle Boarding, Aqua Splash, Air Factory etc.: Staff will accompany the girls on these activities. Further and more detailed information is found on the individual Terms and Conditions on Parent Lounge. The Boarding School provides supervision for all activities with the exception of the aforementioned shopping trips for Years 10-12 girls. The supervision is related to the age of the students and the nature of the activity.
