ANEURYSM OF HEARTANEURYSM OF HEARTANEURYSM OF HEART
An aneurysm of heart is a condition that can occur af-
ter a myocardial infarction due to the inadequate resis-
tance of the new scar tissue to the systolic pressure
It should not be confused with a coronary artery aneu-
rysm which is an aneurysm of the vessels supplying the
heart not the heart itself It should also not be confused
with a pseudo aneurysm[1][2] or a myocardial rupture
(which involves a hole in the wall not just a bulge)
The word aneurysm refers to a bulge or pocketinglsquo of
the wall or lining of a vessel commonly occurring in the
blood vessels at the base of the brain or within the aorta
When it concerns the heart muscle it is called a cardiac
aneurysm and is usually seen in the left ventricle of the
heart What Causes the Aneurysm Seen mainly in the
walls of the left ventricle (lower chamber) of the heart it
is thought to occur here as the blood in this area carries
the highest amount of pressure forcing the walls to
bulge It can develop very slowly over many years and
does not often cause any problems during this time An-
other possible cause of a cardiac aneurysm is as a conse-
quence of a heart attack known medically as a myocar-
dial infarction Again it develops slowly due to a rise in
pressure
Signs and Symptoms As it tends to develop slowly
symptoms may go unnoticed Often the only way of
finding out that it has occurred at all is when other medi-
cal conditions present which are usually very serious
such as blood clots causing strokes and blockages in
other blood vessels These blood clots form as the blood
in the ventricle does not pump out as it should and can
collect and thicken in the bulged area releasing clots
into the system
Diagnosing an Aneurysm When a person visits the hos-
pital or doctor with other symptoms especially with a
history of heart problems they will normally be required
to undergo an electrocardiogram which monitors elec-
trical activity within the heart and shows abnormalities
when a cardiac aneurysm is present It can also appear as
a bulge on a chest x-ray and a more accurate diagnosis
will then be made using an echocardiogram which uses
ultrasound to photographlsquo the heart and how it func-
tions while it beats
Treating an Aneurysm As some people live with this
type of aneurysm for many years diagnosis and treat-
ment will not be given If however it has been properly
diagnosed blood thinning agents may be given to help
reduce the likelihood of blood thickening and clots
forming along with the use of drugs to correct the ir-
regular rhythm of the heart (seen on the electrocardio-
gram) and occasionally surgery will be offered If sur-
gery is indicated it is often to try and remove the bulge
and repair the damaged area and can be quite difficult so
will be used as a last option as it carries many risks
Most people who live with a cardiac aneurysm do so
without knowing it It is far better to reduce the risk of
heart attack and keep blood pressure within healthy lim-
its in order to reduce the likelihood of an aneurysm oc-
curring along with all of the possible side-effects and
consequences Lifestyle choices play a very important
role in this prevention and careful consideration should
be given when participating in highly unhealthy activi-
ties such a heavy drinking and smoking Regular stress
should also be kept to a minimum to help keep blood
pressure down and avoid the chances of it causing prob-
lems within the structures of the heart

Nobodyrsquos Perfect
The 2011 Boca Chita Key Rendezvous Captains log 0600 4 February 2011
The stars were aligned everything was perfecthellip
I checked the boat from bow to stern reviewed my checklist scanned the weather report one more time and set out for
the drive to Harbor Towne Marina The sun was breaking the grasp of darkness as I arrived and met the guard to ex-
change currency for a few days of island time I launched ―Surprise and parked my tow vehicle for three days of secure
rest
Harbor Towne Marina is a first class establishment The marina has many amenities including a laundry room very clean
bathrooms and showers My fee for launching and three days of parking was only sixteen dollars a bargain in the world
where the word ―marine alone causes the price of an object to rise
I contacted Sir Fredrick on the VHF and was happy to find out he was right on time I checked with Why Knot Again
Paul and Sherry were not far behind I was surprised to find that Mike Grady on Miss Audrey would join us for the week-
end Paul and Phyllis Chudnow of C-Adventure would meet up before sundown at the island because they launch from
Crandon Park Marina
Miss Audrey SURPRISE Why Knot Again Sir Fredrick
Captains log 0830 4 February 2011
After meeting up we cruised down the Intracoastal Waterway at a leisurely pace The weather was perfect and I sat back
listening to music with my foot on the throttle cracking and eating pistachios I stopped at Sea Isle Marina to top off my
tank while the rest of the group continued on I cringed as the dollar meter spun faster than the fuel meter did I bring
enough cash
The wind had picked up so down went the Bimini and VHF antenna before heading into the chop Ilsquove cruised in worse
but it was still a bumpy ride Soon I spotted the lighthouse and approaching the island noticed there were only a few
boats docked again the stars were aligned

Captains log 1230 4 February 2011
My original plan was to dock on the Northeast side of the lagoon but boats already occupied that area Mike had arrived
before everyone else trying to secure a section of seawall Since the area was already filling with boats we moved to a
spot on the South seawall with plenty of room for everyone
Wait where was the rest of the fleet I did not see them on the way down How did I arrive before the others Since the
radio was off because the antenna was down I checked the cell and realized there were six missed calls Were the stars
coming out of alignment Was the rest of the fleet stranded in the middle of the bay Nope everyone was concerned
about where I was so the group just ran slower Eventually we were all reunited and proceeded to set up camp for the
weekend One boat was still missing in action Paul and Phyllis were cruising at sail boat speed and the dock was getting
filled Luckily for them a fishing boat just left as they arrived Docking in the daylight was much easier this time Paul
supplied us with a pop up canopy that worked great I had already eaten lunch so the others broke out vittles and enjoyed
an afternoon meal

GoinghellipGoinghellipGone
First rule in boating is NOT to wear flip flops while on a boat Why they slip when wet I got lazy climbing up the sea-
wall to unload my gear and left them on With one foot on the sea wall and one on the gunnels the boat moved away and
donlsquot you know my foot slipped In slow motion I flipped upside down and held unto the dock line which of course
pulled the boat back in threatening to squish me like a bug I let go and splashed into the cold water Surfacing I swam
around the boat to the stern and climbed back aboard This time removing my flip flops I emerged onto the dock no one
noticed the flip and fall Then Loretta turned around and asked ―What happened to you Well I got a lecture on not
wearing flip flops from everyone The boat was unloaded now was time to set up the tent
The Hilton complete with fans and lights
I set up my home-away-from-home in one area and after some fretting decided I wanted a better camping location Fi-
nally ready to settle down I asked Paul if I could use the shower (Oh yeah my solar shower broke just before the trip) to
clean up In case you didnlsquot know Paul purchased a new-used boat and it is beautiful a home that floats
Feeling much better I settled down for the evening While the food was being prepared for the evening feast a few of us
went to watch the sunset What was that buzzing sound No not in the winterhellipYes mosquitoes were out in force quick
get the bug spray no I just showered The choice was clear either put on the bug spray loose a quart of blood

Dinner was great with plenty of food and drink I even got a bit loopy on the wine thanks Phyllis
Fred Paul Loretta Sherry Phyllis and Paul
The sun had set and it was getting late and I was tired so off to the tent for some quiet time It was windy and cool but too hu-
mid I read my Latitudes and Attitudes magazine and fell into a quiet slumber At midnight I awoke to use the restroom The
moon had set and for the first time since I was a kid there it was bright and clear the Big Dipper along with so many stars I
stood there in amazement even with the bugs buzzing me Quickly heading back into my nylon cave I slept until my usual 0500
wake up time I noticed my small toe throbbing and realized it has swollen up and tuned a nasty color The thought of gangrene
flashed through my head I called Buddy and requested some antibiotics The tent has a door with a bug netting flap which allows
air but no bugs When I opened the flap hundreds of hungry mosquitoes were trying to get at me guess I was not leaving any-
time soon Finally the sun broke and the bugs retreated to their hiding place and I was free to roam First thing was to clean the
cut I had not noticed on my tow early and bandage it I also cleaned the abrasion on my leg I was messed up
Captains log 0630 5 February 2011
I put on my chefs hat and cranked out eggs hash browns sausage and toast Breakfast was served in grand Power Squadron fash-
ion While the crew cleaned up I readied Surprise for her journey to Alabama Jacks to meet Sherrylsquos son Dave and wife Tricia
Buddy was driving down and also met with a fellow Triumph owner Bill and Cheryl We departed at 1030 and bumped along on
Biscayne Bay until we reached the dock at 1200 Ilsquoll leave Sherrylsquos thoughts on the trip for her writing but just say she thought I
was crazy driving this small boat through the chop
We enjoyed conch fritters beer and other food items until satisfied and had an errand to run before heading back to Boca Chita
for the evening
Barry and Buddy Conch Fritters Bill and Cheryl
Captains log 1400 5 February 2011
I had hoped the bay settled down as the clocked ticked but it was not meant to be Sherry followed in her sonlsquos boat for the
sloppy ride back and then my depth sounder went out Since the GPS worked I was not worried We arrived at 1700 in time for
dinner before the evening bug fest Afterward I asked Paul if the shower was available he looked at me and said no What why
canlsquot I shower Paul replied ―my twelve volt system is completely dead no power no shower Dejected I cleaned up with baby
wipes and made a beeline for the tent before the swarm would begin Oh by the way did I mention how crowded the island had
become that day A large and loud family played music until late in the evening Later I awoke and saw an orange glow through
my tent was there a bonfire No there canlsquot be No fires are allowed on the island guess again Seems the large and loud family
thought no police no problem Well the next morning I found out that the police did arrive to talk to one boat owner about run-
ning their generator after 2200 and then spoke to the large and loud family about their fire Needless to say I was not too quiet
when I arose at 0500 to stow away my gear I could do this in the dark because I installed nifty LED courtesy deck lights I
flipped the switch no light What was going on I tried the VHF no power But the GPS was working Ah the light bulb above
my head went off The GPS uses either boat power or battery when the depth sounder went out the GPS continued to work off
batteries Ok something was wrong with my power buss but itlsquos too dark so back to the tent until daylight Guess the stars had
come out of alignment but I fought on

Trish and Dave at Sundaylsquos ―bug free breakfast
Since Paullsquos electronics were out and Loretta had to work Sunday we planned on an
early departure for the trip home We still made time for a large breakfast and I stowed
away my gear and broke down the tent to ready for the ride home The original plan was
for Paul to follow Fred until the Rickenbacker Bridge but again Paul had a problem
The motors were chugging and before he knew it Fred was gone I led Paul to the bridge
and when he was safe I continued on my way I made Harbor Town by 1230 and was
back in my driveway by 1400 for cleaning and stowing After a shower I settled down
for the Super Bowl falling asleep after the first half while dreaming about the next trip
and Paullsquos voice in the background saying ―The next trip should be to a marina with a
hotel
So much for camping

Biscayne Bay until we reached the dock at 1200 Ilsquoll leave Sherrylsquos thoughts on the trip for her writing but just say she thought I

Most people who live with a cardiac aneurysm do so
without knowing it It is far better to reduce the risk of
heart attack and keep blood pressure within healthy lim-
its in order to reduce the likelihood of an aneurysm oc-
curring along with all of the possible side-effects and
consequences Lifestyle choices play a very important
role in this prevention and careful consideration should
be given when participating in highly unhealthy activi-
ties such a heavy drinking and smoking Regular stress
should also be kept to a minimum to help keep blood
pressure down and avoid the chances of it causing prob-
lems within the structures of the heart

fused through this box I opened the battery compartment and located the main power
buss wire which was attached tohellipwait for ithellipdrum rollhellipnothing Seems the solder
connection in the fuse holder had parted I made a quick jumper so I could cruise back
home with full electronics and continued on my departure chores
A large and loud family played music until late in the evening Later I awoke and saw an
orange glow through my tent was there a bonfire No there canlsquot be No fires are al-
lowed on the island guess again Seems the large and loud family thought no police no
problem Well the next morning I found out that the police did arrive to talk to one boat
owner about running their generator after 2200 and then spoke to the large and loud fam-
ily about their fire Needless to say I was not too quiet when I arose at 0500 to stow
away my gear I could do this in the dark because I installed nifty LED courtesy deck
lights I flipped the switch no light What was going on I tried the VHF no power But
the GPS was working Ah the light bulb above my head went off The GPS uses either
boat power or battery when the depth sounder went out the GPS continued to work off
batteries Ok something was wrong with my power buss but itlsquos too dark so back to the
tent until daylight Guess the stars had come out of alignment but I fought on

I put on my chefs hat and cranked out eggs hash browns sausage and toast Breakfast was served in grand Power Squadron fash-

Feeling much better I settled down for the evening While the food was being prepared for the evening feast a few of us
went to watch the sunset What was that buzzing sound No not in the winterhellipYes mosquitoes were out in force quick
get the bug spray no I just showered The choice was clear either put on the bug spray loose a quart of blood

stood there in amazement even with the bugs buzzing me Quickly heading back into my nylon cave I slept until my usual 0500
wake up time I noticed my small toe throbbing and realized it has swollen up and tuned a nasty color The thought of gangrene
flashed through my head I called Buddy and requested some antibiotics The tent has a door with a bug netting flap which allows
air but no bugs When I opened the flap hundreds of hungry mosquitoes were trying to get at me guess I was not leaving any-
time soon Finally the sun broke and the bugs retreated to their hiding place and I was free to roam First thing was to clean the
cut I had not noticed on my tow early and bandage it I also cleaned the abrasion on my leg I was messed up

After the sun rose I checked out Surprise again I ran the power buss from the battery
through a main fuse to another fuse block in the center console All the electronics are
fused through this box I opened the battery compartment and located the main power
buss wire which was attached tohellipwait for ithellipdrum rollhellipnothing Seems the solder
connection in the fuse holder had parted I made a quick jumper so I could cruise back
home with full electronics and continued on my departure chores

Boca Chita Key courtesy Biscayne National Park
