Another year, another “Shadoz” – arguably the best yet!! A full review later. This issue of “2 Good 4 Words” includes the latest news, reviews, a special article on “Stylus” records and lots more. Enjoy!!

THE MUSIC WORLD MOURNS THE PASSING OF THE VENTURES’ BOB BOGLE

I started my obituaries column (never a pleasant task) with the following – “The good news is that there are no instrumental obituaries to report – long may this continue!!” As I was typing this, the news came from Davy Peckett that Bob Bogle had passed away. Bob was undoubtedly one of the true rock instrumental legends. He was born in Portland Oregon on 16 January 1934 and met up with Don

Wilson on a building site in Seattle. Their first hit, “Walk Don’t Run” is an instrumental classic and was the first in a long line of hits. The Ventures’ history is well documented, and Bob was there for most of the journey.

Bob died on 14 June after a long battle with a form of cancer known as non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. I’m sure all our readers will join me in sending our thoughts and prayers to his family, especially his lovely wife Yumi, and the other Ventures. R.I.P.

Don’t know much about this band – in fact, nothing. I assume they come from the US, and sound like a 3 guitars / drums / keyboards set-up. What is interesting is that they include no less than seven of Martin Cilia’s compositions along with surf / instrumental classics, with more than a nod to Los Meltones. Very well done. The usual Atkins / Travis / Reed / Bryant influences are there, but complemented by some gypsy jazz (seems to be the flavour of the month at present), a couple of Joe Maphis tracks and Bryan’s take on standards such as Mona Lisa and Chattanooga Choo Choo. The playing is tasteful and exemplary – it would be good to see Bryan trying some of his own compositions in the future. Tony Kiek (keyboards) and Barry “Baz” Woollett (guitar) are “Stack It”. They have made memorable appearances at “Shadoz” and generally focus on their versions of The Shadows’ later material. This set is no exception, and includes no less than nine Shad’s tunes. Perfectly executed, a joy to listen to. The second disc contains backing tracks, mostly made by Tony. Despite an ‘ordinary’ cover, and a rather odd band name, this CD is superb! With names like Michel Rose (pedal steel), Stuart French (guitars), Rod McCormack (guitars, banjo, organ), James Gillard (bass, guitar) Doug Gallacher (drums) and Bill Risby (piano), how can you go wrong! The material is mainly country influenced, and all instrumental. The seven originals more than hold their own against standards such as Avalon, Misty and Harbour Lights. A great Australian album.

Deke’s fourth Guitar Geek show (recorded on 20 January 2007) is a delight. Covering just about all styles – western swing, rock, blues, heavy metal, country pickin’ and jazz, the highlights include Crazy Joe (who looks like a nerd, but is a very talented singer / guitar picker), the appearance of steel legend Herb Remington, and for me the surf set. Seeing legends like Jim Fuller (Surfaris), Paul Johnson (Belairs), Eddie Bertrand (Eddie & The Showmen), Jim Masoner & Tim Fitzpatrick (Lively Ones), Willie Glover (Pyramids), Bob Spickard & Brian Carman (Chantays) and Nokie Edwards (Ventures) as they are now was very interesting – most of them still have hair!! The Million Man Surf Jam finale saw all guitarists (plus some of the audience) all plug in for “Pipeline” – fun for all. The production of the DVD is a huge improvement on the first festival, with better lighting, use of multi cameras and editing. Recommended. BONUS FEATURES: INTERVIEWS WITH JEFF BECK AND THE BAND MEMBERS The best ‘Hankster’ in the Land of Oz, Max Paton mentioned to me a while back that he sees no one picking up the Shadows baton and doing something new with it. He forecast that the legacy of all things Shadowy would expire with the Baby Boomer generation. My view is that one has to look outside the square to find where the original square has been reinvented. Jeff Beck cites The Shadows as a primal influence and this is very evident if you peel back the thin veneer of the jazz fusion rock moniker he wears. It may not be every Shadows/Ventures fan’s cup of tea, but anyone who wants to find out what a Stratocaster and echo unit in the hands of a true virtuoso are doing with fantastic melodies in the 21st century need look no further than this DVD. Along with Jeff Beck’s gig in Sydney last February, this DVD is the most inspiring thing I have witnessed musically since I can’t remember when. BLUEGRASS MEDLEY / YANKEE DOODLE DIXIE / SWINGY BOOGIE BONUS: MAKING OF DU SPAECTACLE / INTERVIEW DE JEAN-FELIX LALANNE This has to be one of the best guitar concerts I’ve seen. Tunisian born, raised in Paris, Dadi of course perished in the fatal TWA 800 crash in 1996. Here he joins French guitarist Lalanne in a selection of Atkins / Travis styled numbers. Some superb picking, not too flashy – very tasteful. The two acoustic guitarists obviously have great rapport and an infectious sense of humour – even though I can’t understand French. This is highly recommended if you can find a copy. LIVE MUSIC SMOKIN’’JOEY ROBINSON JOE ROBINSON Live @ Toff In Town, 14 May 2009

Anyone playing acoustic guitar in Australia these days will inevitably be compared to Tommy Emmanuel. Joe Robinson is obviously influenced by him – adding some of Tommy’s staples to his set, such as Lady Madonna & Classical Gas. He also has his own voice and the quality of the songs he’s written himself show the promise of a bright future in his own style. Robinson came to attention after winning Australia’s Got Talent in 2008. This lead to Nashville to record an album (with Tommy guesting on the song “Burgers & Fries”) and on to a European tour. He came to the Toff in Town on the Victorian leg of his national tour. He was supported by the runner up in the competition, the thirteen year old guitarist Jourdain. For his age, Jourdain is an advanced guitarist with a great voice. I would have preferred him to rely less on backing tracks for his set, but it was still entertaining.

Robinson’s enthusiasm was infectious. He engaged the audience as he played and seemed to be enjoying what he was doing immensely, which was fun to watch. There was a tendency to be overconfident and rush things, but this settled down by the second set. Robinson’s enthusiasm in showing how fast he played was a gimmick that occasionally detracted from the musicality of his playing. Hopefully this is something that will come to him with more experience. He used only a Martin acoustic guitar with no backing tracks for the entire show. Jourdain came back at the end for a jam on Breezin’ (by George Benson). It didn’t seem particularly well thought out with the boys playing over each other and competing with the backing track. It was a small turnout, but the crowd stayed to the end. The Toff in Town is an intimate venue, so the smaller crowd wasn’t really an issue. (Review and Photography by Mandy Hall)

Seemingly, gone are the days when 15 bands take turns playing Apache and Dance On. What we saw on the weekend was a mix of the expected Shads, acoustic duo, heavy instro, solo acoustic, Martin and Ben’s jazzy acoustic set, some great movie themes aided by brass … some regular bands and players, and some newcomers. Every act brought something new, and added surprises to the night. Highlights for myself were … Shadamataz, with their brass … Bob Brown’s beautiful “Diamonds Are Forever” … the surprise of Martin, with Ben Rogers, and their jazzy acoustic set … Space Party, heavy trio … The Futuras, heavy, with Hammond organ (nice piece of furniture) … Martin Cilia’s surf set … Bryan Browne’s show closing set. In all, a good blend, without compromising the aims of Shadoz. We still had a few “Flingels” played, and regular bands gave us a fair dose of Shads tunes. Although I can’t recall hearing “Apache”, I was told it was done early on … once. The club also provided a “Shadoz Menu” enabling patrons to get meals throughout the day. Personally, I avoided the “chicken schitzel” (their spelling), although it did seem to be a popular dish. 15 year old BRYAN BROWNE wound up the night (as well as playing during the dinner break) with more of his incredible playing. Bryan also has a new CD out, “The Incredible Guitar Sounds Of Bryan Browne”. A great night, I’m already looking forward to 2010.” And so to a run-down of the day – Shadoz ‘debutantes’, the NEAU STARLIGHT WRANGLERS comprise a couple of young guitarists KANE WHISTANCE and KATE LITTLEWOLF, who travelled the 80 or so kilometers from Geelong to open the show. They breezed through Windy And Warm, Apache, Walk Don’t Run, Pipeline, (with Kane on lead) and Geronimo, Bombora and Surf Rider (with Kate on lead) with great aplomb. Kane tells me that he has lots of original compositions, some of which he hopes to air next year. He was obviously thrilled to meet his hero Martin Cilia. ALIVE ‘N’ KICKIN treated us to a set of Shads’ numbers – Apache, Geronimo, Atlantis, FBI, The Boys, Genie With The Light Brown Lamp, Cavatina, Sacha and The Savage. The group is IAN MAIR (Lead Guitar), HARRY REITER (Bass), DAVID BUTTON (Rhythm) and MIKE HARDWARE (Drums). A nice set which set the tone for the day. Thanks gents!! MICHAEL BUYOKOZ made his debut at last year’s event and returned with another fine set of instro ‘classics’. Speak Softly Love (Theme from “The Godfather”), Duane’s Forty Miles Of Bad Road,

Shadoogie, Red River Rock, Misirlou and Bulldog comprised Michael’s set – very well done. Our nation’s capital, Canberra always seems to be cold. But our next band, SPACE PARTY is HOT, and hail from there and make their Shadoz debut. They released a promo CD last year “Invasion Of The Surfer Men” with a Spotnicks edge. Most of the tracks from the CD were featured in their act, which was Space Party, Flight To Mars, The Creature, Spanish Song, Penetration, Rumble, Crime Wave, Gumshoe, Journey Through The Black Hole, Intoxica and Journey To The Stars. Great stuff by ALEX PLEGT (Guitar), KEVIN LAURO (Bass) and DARREN ATKINSON (Drums). Please come back next year!! CRAIG BURKE is yet another solo guitarist who first appeared in 2008. Craig is an acoustic player with leanings to the Chet Atkins / Merle Travis style. His set featured When I’m 64, Dance With Me, Wild Orchids, The Entertainer, Can’t Help Falling In Love and Windy And Warm – superbly played. His uncle Brian joined him for a couple of vocals (the dreaded ‘v’ word). TONY KIEK, “BAZ” WOOLLETT and GEORGE LEWIS (STACK IT and TURNING POINT) were unable to join us this year (Tony has just undergone an ear operation – he says it’s too many years of his bad playing! Whatever, we wish him a speedy recovery). BOB BROWN, another Sydneysider graciously offered to fill in with some real surprises. His superb set was his own arrangement of Surfside, Backbreaker (original composition by Bob with Martin Cilia), Barracuda (original), Angel (instrumental version of Cliff’s tune with one vocal verse), Diamonds Are Forever and Cruel Sea Medley (done with country influence sequence – Cruel Sea, Man Of Mystery, Bombora). Thanks Bob for your contribution. All the way from Phillip Island are THE SHEDOWS (guess that means they practice in the shed!) – Shadoz regulars will remember them as “Shazam” but they return with a new monicker. ROB WATSON (Bass), TONY MERCER (Lead Guitar), MIKE McCABE (Rhythm), MARTY SAUNDERS (Drums) and JEFF CULLEN (Lead Vocals & Rhythm Guitar) are THE SHEDOWS, and they entertained with more from the Shad’s repertoire – Round And Round, Foot Tapper, Peace Pipe, Theme For Young Lovers, Gonzalez, We Say Yeah (voc), Willie And The Hand Jive (voc), Atlantis, Kon-Tiki, The Rise And Fall Of Flingel Bunt, Shadoogie, Shindig and The Savage. Wot? No Apache? SHINDIG also made their ‘debut’ last year, and by popular demand, BARRY TRELOAR (Bass), IAN MAIR (Lead Guitar), DENNIS GOODALL (Rhythm,

Vocals) and BOB GOODALL (Drums) return with their 2009 set – Dance On, FBI, Move It, Peace Pipe, The Stranger / Kon –Tiki, Midnight, Please Don’t Tease, Wonderful Land, Dynamite, Nine Times Out Of Ten, Shindig, Theme For Young Lovers, The Young Ones and Sleep Walk. Nicely done, and the vocals weren’t too bad either!! THE FIVE O’CLOCK SHADOWS from overseas (Tasmania) have been noticeable for their absence recently, so make a welcome return to the ‘mainland’. They won the “STEWY” award in 2008. Their set was specifically timed to span the 5 o’clock timeslot. RICHARD ANDREWS (Lead), BILL BURTON (Rhythm), PETER DAVIDSON (Bass) are joined by new drummer DANIEL LEALE for a superb set with Fender Bender, Summer Love ’59, Exodus, Old Ned (Theme from Steptoe & Son), Sukiyaki, Please Please Me, Back Home, Slaughter On 10th Avenue, The Frightened City, Main Theme, 1861, Lullaby Of The Leaves and I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Arthur. A nice blend of Shads, film themes and others – well thought out and very well done. MARTIN CILIA & BEN ROGERS Doin’ the Django Tango A special treat next. MARTIN CILIA and BEN ROGERS combined for a magnificent ‘gypsy jazz’ set on acoustic guitars – Walk Don’t Run (a la Johnny Smith), Tetanus Swing (Ben Rogers), What’s Next? (aka Martin’s Blues In Bb) (Martin), Stardust, Honeysuckle Rose (aka Honey, Suck m’Hose), Martin’s Swing (Martin) and Daphne (Reinhardt / Grappelli) left the audience gobsmacked. Fantastic stuff. The dinner break was scheduled next, but, as food was available during the day, Bryan Browne kindly offered to play a quiet acoustic set whilst old friends chewed the fat, caught up with fellow muso’s, and met new ones. Bryan joined with Craig Burke and for Borsalino, Avalon, and Mister Sandman, then continued (with his Maton) with Blue Smoke, Oh By Jingo!, Michelle, Cavatina, Cheek To Cheek, Over The Rainbow, When You Wish Upon A Star and I Got Rhythm, switching to his Gretsch for Avalon and It Don’t Mean A Thing. Great to see and hear

the younger generation keeping the instrumental flag flying!!

Our resident ‘house’ band SHADAMATAZ (RUSSELL BAIRD and JOHN BESHARA (Guitars), DAN McLACHLAN (Bass), JOHN HALL (Drums – 2007 “Stewy” award), Russell”s daughter LISA BAIRD (Trombone) and TANYA BETHUNE (Trumpet) started the evening with an enjoyable set – While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Wonderful Land, Going Home (Theme from ‘Local Hero’), Got To get You Into My Life, Sleepwalk, James Bond Theme, Atlantis, Back In The USSR, The Good The Bad & The Ugly and Geronimo. The brass section really added an extra dimension to the set. Very good.

THE FUTURAS. It’s always exciting to welcome new bands – this time a local band who regularly play at North Melbourne’s Town Hall Hotel. They have released two CD’s “The Futuras” (2006) and “What Did The Man Say?” (2008). These guys are something special, and include GORDON JOHNS (Bass), MICHAEL GALVIN (Guitar), ANDY SWAN (Drums) and

JUSTIN WHEELAHAN (Hammond Organ – 1935 vintage !!??) They thrilled the audience with Billy Larkins’ The Pygmy, Hung Over, Bad Sign, New Breed (Ike), Hey Joe, Polk Salad Annie (with Andy’s impromptu drum solo – the band managed to come back together in the chorus too), Jimmy Vaughan’s Ironic Twist, Mrs Robinson (a la Booker T & The MG’s) and Money. A welcome change from the 3 guitars / drums format – the Hammond sounded GREAT! A brief pause saw the customary raffle draw, with the prizes donated by Denys Williams from Hound Dog’s Bop Shop.

Before the evening’s segment, we announced that Richard Codron’s wife passed away on 27 May, and Richard’s band “Yung@Heart” would not be appearing tonight as scheduled. Our sincere condolences to Richard and his family

MARTIN CILIA MICHAEL SMITH JOHN HALL

MARTIN CILIA is of course, one of Australia’s acclaimed Atlantics. He has been working with the Bluelounge and The Capitols, as well as other projects. His solo album “Revenge Of The Surf Guitar” was named the 2007 “Album Of The Year” in “2 Good 4 Words”. He was joined by Atlantics’ new bass player MICHAEL SMITH, drummer JOHN HALL and JOHN BESHARA on rhythm for 1963, Big Swell, Flight Of The Surf Guitar, Mermaid Beach, Return Of The Surf Guitar, Night Star and, of course, Bombora. Martin has a superb sound and tone, and is always welcome at “Shadoz”. BEN ROGERS entertained us earlier in a set with Martin – now he returns with BEN ROGERS INSTRUMENTAL ASYLUM. The trio (with NIKKI SCARLETT on Bass and DENIS CLOSE on drums) have released two great albums and feature a mix of rocking originals and instrumental classics. This time they played the Zombies’ She’s Not There, Fencing (original), Freddie King’s Hideaway, Eddie’s Hip Joint (original), Uncle Bert’s Ginchy, Docklands (original), Secret Agent Man, La Mer, Hawaiian War Chant (segue into Duke Ellington’s Caravan) and the Fireballs’ Torquay. The “Stewy” award is presented annually in honour of the late Stewart Male, one of the stalwarts of early “Shadoz”. Stewy was well-loved among all of us and was a superb luthier, one of his clients being non other than Hank Marvin. Stewy passed away on 10 December 2004 after a long battle with cancer. The 2005 award went to Ian B.Allen and in 2006 the honours went to Kim Humphreys. We honoured our ‘resident’ drummer John Hall in ’07, and in 2008 The Five O’Clock Shadows got the gong. So to 2009, and we were pleased to award the “Stewy” to a guitarist with a huge future – he has played with Tommy Emmanuel, Phil Emmanuel, Nokie Edwards (The Ventures), Joe Robinson, Hank Marvin, Les Paul and many other greats, winning countless awards along the way – and he’s only 15 years old!! So in all a satisfying and enjoyable day. All the hard work and planning seems to be worth the effort, with thanks of course to our helpers. SHADS ARE COMING I just received news (from Pat Read at Leo’s Den) that the Cliff & Shadows tour will now include Australia and New Zealand – in February and March next year. The concert at the O2 Arena on 26 September will be filmed for possible DVD release. Further information as it comes to hand.
