OUR AIMS AND ASPIRATIONS

Our mission is to deliver world class Bobath therapy to as many children with cerebral palsy in Wales as possible. To do this, we constantly strive to extend our reach, both directly by offering therapy to more children, and indirectly by working with community therapy teams to add to their knowledge base and skills in treating children with cerebral palsy. We provide therapy at no cost to families. The service is funded either by health board referral or by our charitable funds, which our dedicated fundraising team and volunteers work hard to raise each year.

Our strategic plan includes the following key objectives:

• Offertherapytomorechildren• Developnewmodelsofservice• EquityofaccessacrossWales• Offeraservicetoolderteenagers and young adults• Workinpartnershipwithcommunity therapy teams • Shareourspecialistknowledge through courses and other means• Continualqualityimprovement• Developsupporters’groups • Expandourretailactivities

Bobath Therapy in Wales

2

In a study (2002) of populations of children in Europe including the UK, theprevalence rate of CP was found to be2.08 per 1000 live births. No data exists on the exact number of children in Wales who have cerebral palsy, but we estimate from statistics and our own records that there may be as many as 1800. At Bobath Children’s Therapy Centre Wales, wecurrently have around 450 children on our caseload.

The Bobath approach to the management of children with cerebral palsy was pioneered and developed by Dr Kareland Mrs Berta Bobath. Originating in the 1940’s, the Bobath Concept is nowwellknown and accepted in many countries as one of the leading approaches.

The main aim of treatment is to encourage and increase thechild’sability tomove, function and participate in life and society. Typical movement has developed to enable us to move in the most effective and efficient way possible and Bobaththerapists’ understanding of typicaldevelopment and typical movement allows them to use this knowledge and understanding to help and support the development of children who have cerebral palsy. Bobath therapy considers thechild’sdevelopmentandretentionofskillsacrossthelifespan.Specifichandlingskills help improve biomechanical alignment and muscle length or alter effort to make more complex typical movements possible, giving children enhanced movement opportunities and experience, thus promoting function and independence.

Chairman’smessage

2013-14 was the year in which we celebrated 21 years of Bobath in Wales. A huge thank you must be extended to the founder families, and so many others, who generously gave their time and energytogettheCentreinWhitchurchupandrunningallthoseyearsago.FromsmallbeginningsIthinkyouwillagreetheCentreas you see it today has come a long way!

Yes, there have been challenges along the way and no doubt, many more to come, but regular feedback from grateful families istestimonytothewonderfulachievementsmadeattheCentre.Iam honoured to be part of such a life-changing organisation.

One of our key values is to be positive and to focus on ability, not disability. This is a fundamental principle and can be seen in action every day in the efforts of staff, volunteers, the children and families themselves.

The future remains an uncertain landscape full of operational and financialchallenges.WeneverrestonourlaurelsatBobathandIurge you to join us in supporting this wonderful charity and help us to ensure its future remains safe for many years to come.

Our results are shown in the following pages. I would like to thank my fellow trustees, the staff and volunteers, and all of our funders and supporters, fortheircontributiontoWales’“MostAdmiredCharity2013”.

Service delivery

This year I am delighted to report that not only did we provide therapy to 309 children and young people, we did this through an innovative mix of service models. We constantly look for ways to satisfy demand whilst still working to the standards youwouldexpectinaCentreofExcellence.

Quality

We put a great deal of effort into ensuring that the service we provide isofthehighestpossiblequality.Thismeansconstantlearninganddevelopment on the part of all our staff. Thanks to continued funding from theHenrySmithCharity, wehavea dedicated staff post working on clinical effectiveness and improvements in our practice.

In the wider world we are keen to share our small-scale studies and findings with clinical colleaguesin the UK and overseas. Weparticipated inBABTTandEACDevents and this year took three academic posters to the annual EACDconference,inNewcastle.

I and other members of the therapy team have taught on Bobath courses this year in Belfast, Inverness,Loughborough,LondonandCardiff.

Thank YouI would like to thank our staff, trustees and volunteers for all their hardworkthisyear.Wecouldn’tdo it without you! If you have a moment, take a look at our “Thank You” video on YouTube, specially produced for our 21st year.JenniferCarrollMAMCSPSRP

This year we built on our pioneering work on goal-setting with children who have cerebral palsy. This is innovative work because of the difficulty in setting standardmeasures for improvement in cerebral palsy that are relevant to every child.

For each child, specific goalsare set in agreement with the child and their parents or carers. A rangeofprojectedoutcomesisalsopredicted, sothatthechild’sachievement can be evaluated as either on target, below target, or above target.

This allows us to assess outcomes to a high level of detail, based ongoalstailoredtoeachchild. In2013-14,80.64%ofgoalsweremet or exceeded by the children. We are sharing this model with international colleagues and feedback has been very encouraging.

Sharing Knowledge

We know we do not have the capacity to offer therapy to every child in Wales who has cerebral palsy. Our waiting list continues to present a challenge, and although we are developing new service models to tackle this, it is likely that we will not be able to see every child on our caseload as often as we would like.

There are also children across Wales who have cerebral palsy, but haveneverbeen referredto theCentre.Wewould like themtoaccessgoodqualityBobaththerapyaswebelieveeverychildcanbenefit, nomatterhowmildorcomplextheircondition.Withthisinmind, we have again this year shared our specialist knowledge

Fantastic support continues from our Friends ofBobathWales,CwmCrafters,151Cluband the newly formed Emlyn Friends ofBobathbasedinNewcastleEmlyn, aswellas the incredible band of volunteers without which the charity could not function. There are so many individuals, clubs and companies to thank for their support and generosity this year, including: • Miss Wales “Beauty with a Purpose”pageant, which raised £23,000 for us.•SmartSolutions, whopledgedtoraiseanincredible £21,000 and made a great start by raising over £8,000 at their Mad Hatters Ball in November 2013.

We had funding for Initial Consultations, allowing us to see babies and very young children as soon as possible after diagnosis, as well as financial support for our EarlyIntervention Service. We were supportedby trusts such as the Garfield WestonFoundation for repeat visits, to help ease our ever growing waiting list. We are most grateful to have received funding this year towards therapy for those who attended the Centre as children but have nowreached adulthood. A full list of funders can be found on our website.

I would like to pay special tribute to those who have passed away during the year and whose families and friends have donated monies in their memory. We are especially grateful to those benefactors
