Jim Chapin Drumming’s Immortal Teacher

If you don’t own a copy of Advanced Techniques For The Modern Drummer, STOP what you’re doing right now and get yourself a copy!

Jim Chapin was so passionate about teaching drumming techniques, he always carried a drum pad and a pair of sticks with him wherever he went. He was on a mission to share his knowledge and wisdom on the countless drummers he encountered during his career. And he did.

When I was 16, I met Jim at a drumming seminar and he graciously signed my 1966 copy of his book, writing in it: “I’ll bet you already play this pretty perfectly??? Good luck Bob!” WOW! Talk about inspiration! At nearly 41 years old, I’m still working out of that book!

Top 3 things that come to mind when I think of Jim Chapin:

1. His legendary book Advanced Techniques For The Modern Drummer. Often referred to, simply, “The Chapin Book.”

2. The Moeller Method technique.

3. By expanding and modernizing what he was taught be his teacher Sanford Moeller, he is a prime example of the “student becoming the master.”

FEATURED DRUMMER YOU SHOULD KNOW AUGUST 2018

STUDENT OF THE MONTH This month, I’m awarding my favorite student the title of SOTM. Can you guess who? Why yes, it’s ME! Bobby A! Why me? Because NOT ONE of my students turned in their practice logs this month, and that makes me ☹ .

In addition to all drumming I do in my band and teaching, I still logged 20+ hours of PRACTICE time this month and I continue to take lessons with a master drummer on a monthly basis (see video of the month). I’m COMMITTED to drumming. Are you?
