Dear Bobcat Family,

The school year is rushing by and there is so much to do! I hope that you all found time to

celebrate being a family during the summer with some fun and relaxation.

We had a strong start to the school year thanks for our great team at Edgewater Public School.

Our top priority is safety and security and student learning. Please help us with these two things

by following procedures for being on campus and letting your student know that you are involved

in their learning. The more you care and believe in your student’s ability to work hard, the harder

they will work and the stronger their own belief in their ability to do so will become. We depend

on you to reinforce the

importance of learning and student responsibility by working with your child each evening. Ask

specific questions about their learning and don’t settle for “nothing” as an answer. Monitor their

reading and ask them questions about what they have read. Have them practice their math facts

with you. Thank you for helping us build their dreams and get them to be able to accomplish

them.

It was so nice to see many of you at Open House. I hope that you all had a great experience and

please let us know if we can follow-up with any information that you may need. If you have any

questions about Title I and you missed the meeting at Open House, please let us know. A pam-

phlet went home last week with information as well.

“Every minute Counts at Edgewater Public School” so please have your child at school, prepared

and on time each day. If your child is eating breakfast, please have them here no later than 7:40

a.m.

The School Improvement goal for Edgewater Public School remains, “If Edgewater

Public School implements rigorous, personalized instruction focused on coherent

instructional shifts then overall student achievement will increase thus creating future ready

students.” Our team has recommitted themselves to this goal and have worked throughout the

summer to ensure your children get the very best we can offer.

This is truly a wonderful place where the teachers are passionate about their craft and their

students, the children are bright and eager to learn, and the community and parents are loving

and supportive. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you ever have any questions or concerns.

Edgewater Public School Will Stay the Course and Great Things Will Continue to Happen.

Becky Porter,

Principal of Edgewater Public School

Parents and guardians, when your student is out of school for any reason, it

is your responsibility to contact the school and excuse your student. Our con-

tact number is 386-424-2573 extension 35223. Thank you!

School Security Information From Ms. Brown

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Every student, faculty, staff and family member’s safety is a very important

aspect of creating a positive learning environment here at Edgewater Public Ele-

mentary School. Practicing fire and code drills are an important part of our school’s

preparation for emergency situations. Below are brief descriptions of the fire and

code drills we practice throughout the school year. In the event you are on campus

while we are conducing a drill, we ask that you participate and cooperate with our

school’s security team.

In the event we should ever evacuate our school’s students, faculty and staff,

we would relocate to Indian River elementary School. We have an agreement with

both Indian River and our alternate site, New Smyrna Beach Middle School, should

Indian River be unavailable. Both facilities are prepared to house our students,

faculty and staff until proper dismissal takes place.

Drills

• Fire Drill—Two fire drills are performed during the first two weeks of school.

We will perform one drill per month for the remainder of the school year.

Classrooms are evacuated, checked and all students are accounted for before

the “All Clear” signal is given and students, faculty and staff resume their

normal daily activities.

• Code Red—A Code Red drill is performed to practice for an emergency situa-

tion involving weapons/hostages. Our campus would go into a “Lock Down”

until the crisis is resolved. Our campus will perform a Code Red Level 2 in

the emergency event of an active shooter.

• Code Blue—A Code Blue drill is performed to practice for an emergency

situation involving a “Bomb Threat” or suspicious package. All would remain

in their locations until a sweep of the campus was completed and the need to

evacuate was substantiated.

• Code Green—A Code Green is performed to practice for an emergency situa-

tion involving severe weather/tornado. All have been instructed to move to a

safe zone and be prepared to assume the protective position as far away from

doors and windows as possible should it be needed.

• Code Yellow—A Code Yellow is performed to practice for an emergency situ-

ation involving Hazmat/Toxic Spill. All A/C units would be turned off. All

persons out of doors would be brought inside until the area had been inspected

and it is deemed safe to give the “All Clear”.

Evacuation Site: Indian River Elementary School

Alternate Evacuation Site: New Smyrna Beach Middle School

Media Meeting Location: Edgewater YMCA

Please pull as far forward as possi-

ble to unload your passengers in the

parent loop. Please refrain from using a cell

phone while driving in the parent

loop.

If you need to come into the office

after school, please be sure to park

in the grass parking lot and NOT

near the bus loop. This is very im-

portant to keep all students safe! Please remember that parents and

visitors need to check in and out at

the front desk with their driver’s

license. Photo ID is required in order for

office personnel to issue a visitor’s

badge. VPK pick-up / drop-off : Please do

not enter the building before 7:30

a.m. to drop off and not before 2:00

for pick up

A Few Words From Nurse

Laurie …

It’s that time of year again… “Cold and Flu

Season”. The number one way to prevent

the spread of colds and flu is proper hand washing. We can

all do our part by encouraging good hygiene, proper hand

washing and sneezing or

coughing into our elbow to prevent the spread of germs that

cause missed work and poor attendance at school. Remem-

ber children must be fever free for 24

hours without fever reducing

medication before they may return to

school.

Stay Healthy!

Changes for your student’s route home should

be communicated to the teacher with a note.

In the case of a true emergency you may call

the office. We request that you call before

1:30 p.m. to make changes to your student(s)

route home.

Changes can only be made by parents or legal

guardians.

Please remind your student(s) that they are

to go home only as you have arranged for

them

previously as their parent/guardian.

Be sure you have updated and signed your

student’s emergency card. Students

checking out early are only permitted to go

home with individuals listed on their card.

We had an awesome Open Barn on 9/20. Thank you to all the

students and families that visitied. We had a large turnout!

Currently we are studying the needs of barn animals. Student

posters are on display also. We have named one of our rabbits

“Eclipse” because she joined our Bobcat family on the day of the solar eclipse. The second rabbit will be named soon. Each 3rd—5th grade class determined the two

most popular names. Students can vote on the rabbit’s

name. Student votes cost 1 penny per vote. If you donate

one quarter that equals 25 votes. We also have 6 hens in our chicken coop! In a few weeks we hope to get our first

eggs. We are “eggcited”!!!!

THE 2017-2018 SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT AND PARENT

INVOLVEMENT PLANS ARE NOW ONLINE!!

These two important items are guiding documents which help

our school improve student achievement and show how we plan

to reach improvement goals. These living documents are updated

every year based on input from not only the faculty and

district, but also from parents and the community.

The documents can be found on our school website under the

“Parents” tab. Or you can type the following URL into your

browser to reach the download links:

A Superhero Is Coming To Our School A Top Character Development & Bully Prevention Assembly

One of the members from the Omegaman & Friends school assembly program will be presenting

their positive Superhero message to our students at Edgewater Public School on October 31st.

Omegaman & Friends is a very unique school assembly presentation. Their message delivers the

Anti-Bullying/Character Development topics through a superhero theme.

They challenge students to live a life as a Dream-Maker (making good choices) & not be a

Dream-Breaker (making bad choices). They perform feats of strength; such as, snapping a baseball

bat & ripping a phone book in half as a tool to illustrate and maintain the attention of our students

to ensure that their message is not lost.

Schools across the nation have seen a great increase of BULLYING in their schools. Edgewater

Public School is taking a proactive stance against this disturbing trend. Through this assembly, our

students will learn how to Identify, Respond, and Prevent bullying in our school, to make sure

every student is a H.E.R.O.—Helping Everyone Respect Others.

We invite all parents to attend this fun-filled message of character education, motivation,

inspiration and hope. It is one event you will not want to miss. We appreciate your investment in

your child’s life and look forward to seeing you there!
