Treasure HuntThe treasure hunt is scheduled to take place on arrivals day and is aimed at those students arriving early. Students are given a list of questions that they must answer. In order to do this they must explore the campus to find the answers to the questions.

Students are given a question sheet and an answer sheet. They are instructed that they must participate in groups of at least four. They are also informed that in order to win they must answer the most questions correctly in the shortest time. All completed answer sheets are to be given to the Leisure Manager. The winners and the prize will be announced during assembly.

Themed Welcome DiscoThe welcome disco is scheduled for the evening of Day 1 and is the perfect way for all students (new and old) to meet each other. The disco is operated by an external company with experience in dealing with young people. Students are allowed to request specific songs from the DJ but should bear in mind that the music played will be that that is popular in America at the time of the disco.

There are no other scheduled activities for the evening of Day 1 as we expect all students to attend the disco.

The themes for the Welcome Discos are as follows:

• International – students are encouraged to dress in a manner that best represents the country they are from

• DresstoImpress– the best dressed students will be decided at the disco

• SoYouThinkYouCanDance based on the hit TV show, students will be invited to show off their best dance moves

BlingoBlingo is simply bingo but for valuable prizes, the term is a combination of Bingo and Bling. Students participating will have the opportunity to win prizes such as a full-day optional excursion which sells for USD 170.

Trash Bag Fashion ShowStudents will be given a trash bag that they need to turn into an outfit to wear. They will then show off their outfit on the catwalk. Students will vote on the best outfit. The winner will be posted on facebook.

Karaoke NightStudents will have the opportunity to show off their singing skills or just sit back, relax and enjoy nice performances from other students.

We offer a variety of sporting and non-sporting activities at our summer schools.

Activities

USA | Boca Raton

Page 6: Boca Raton - Saint Andrew's School€¦ · FORT LAUDERDALE CRUISE Cruise around the ‘Venice of America’, Fort Lauderdale. Students will enjoy views of downtown Fort Lauderdale

Water WarsStudents are split into teams and each team is given a color and a flag (of the same color) that they must protect. The aim of the activity is to steal the other team’s flag while protecting your team’s flag.

Teams are armed with water balloons and water guns containing a mixture of water and food coloring that turns the water the same color as the team’s flag. Students are ‘out’ of the competition if they are hit by water from an opposing team’s water balloons or water guns.

Dance ClassesDance classes offer students the opportunity to learn or practice a dance, typically the Salsa. During these classes we encourage students to teach/demonstrate a dance typical to their country such as Zumba in Brazil. Activity Leaders are also keen to show students dances customary to the United States, including line dancing.

Dive-In Open-air Movie NightThis activity is reminiscent of a drive-in movie but takes place in the swimming pool. Students watch a movie (recently released) that is projected on to a large screen at the side of the pool providing an American twist on the movie going experience.

Speed DatingSpeed Dating is designed to allow students to get to know each other in a relaxed and safe environment. Students will have a set of ice-breaker type questions to ask each other and a limited amount of time in which to do so.

A Minute to Win ItStudents compete in teams undertaking 1 minute challenges such as a student having 1 minute to move a cookie from their forehead into their mouth, without using their hands or dropping the cookie. The winning team are awarded a prize during the certificate ceremony.

Flag American FootballFlag American Football is a safe and easy way to introduce students to the most popular of American sports. Participants wear a coloured flag in their waistband and instead of using tackling as a way to gain possession of the ball students are instructed to remove an opposing player’s flag.

CookiesCookies are the voucher system we use at LAL US Summer Schools. They are used as a great incentive in class and during activities and excursions. There are several ways that students can earn cookies:

• Teachers can give them as prizes for class competitions

• House Parents can occasionally give them as prizes for keeping rooms tidy etc.

• Activity Leaders can occasionally give them as prizes for sports or other activities

Like US currency Cookies are in 5,10,20 and 50 denominations.

Cookies will be used towards the end of each two-week course at the Casino and Auction Night (see above).

Casino NightThroughout their stay students will have the opportunity to earn cookies ‘fake money’ for good behaviour in their accommodation, participation in class and activities etc. The ‘cookies’ are to be used during Casino night. On top of the earned ‘cookies’ all students are given an allowance before entering the ‘casino’.

Casino night involves a number of games for students to bet on such as poker, roulette, Jenga etc. At the end of the night students spend their winnings bidding for prizes in an Auction (the aim of the auction is to collect all the ‘cookies’). The auction includes prizes such as pizza and a DVD night and the top prize is having the center manager serve the winning students food in the cafeteria.

CarnivalThe LAL carnival is a series of silly but fun games providing students with the opportunity to participate in

USA | Boca Raton

Page 7: Boca Raton - Saint Andrew's School€¦ · FORT LAUDERDALE CRUISE Cruise around the ‘Venice of America’, Fort Lauderdale. Students will enjoy views of downtown Fort Lauderdale

quintessential American activities such as apple bobbing, slip and slide and culminating with some brave LAL staff members receiving cream pies in the face.

Talent ShowThe talent show is an opportunity for students to showcase any talents they may have such as singing, dancing or playing an instrument. In the run up to the talent show students will have the opportunity to rehearse under the supervision of an Activity Leader.

All students are expected to attend the talent show as they are an essential component of the judging process. The winner will be decided by a panel of LAL staff and in the event of a tie the audience will be asked to decide the winner. The winner will be awarded a prize during the certificate ceremony.

Photography Scavenger HuntStudents are asked to form groups and are given a worksheet of pictures they must take. For example one of the pictures requires the participants to wear as many items of clothing as possible (the more eclectic, the better). Photos are submitted to a staff member and the best set of photos wins a prize. LAL will post some of the photos on facebook.

Movie MakingStudents are given a choice of subjects about which they must make a short film (2 minutes maximum). They will be supervised by an Activity Leader who has experience of movie making and editing.

The completed movies will be premiered at assembly for students and staff to vote for their favourite. The winning short film will be shown during the Certificate Ceremony where the producer will be awarded a prize.

Pool PartyOnly available at LAL Boca Raton once every two weeks. Students are invited to a pool party during which they will participate in a variety of silly but fun popular pool games.

Certificate CeremonyThe certificate ceremony is the culmination of a students stay and is scheduled to take place the night before they leave. Students are given their end of course certificate and report. All prizes are awarded at the certificate ceremony.

Prom NightProm night is a quintessential American rite of passage for teenagers. Prom, short for promenade, is a semi-formal dance. The highlight of which is the crowning of Prom Queen and King as voted by the student body and organised by the Student Prom Committee. Students are expected to dress up in semi-formal attire, typically a gown for girls and a shirt and tie for boys. It is also traditional to ‘take a date’.

Student Prom CommitteeEach class will vote a student onto the Student Prom Committee for each two week period. The Student Prom Committee will be responsible for organising the prom (they will have a budget for decorations), choosing the theme and organising the crowning of the prom Queen and King.

Free TimeFor those evenings where we have not organised one main social activity students will be given free time. Students can use the sporting facilities, including the pool or they can use a large meeting space to just hang out and chill with other students. All free time will be supervised by an LAL staff member who will happily help students organise an activity if that is how they want to spend their free time.

LAL will provide a limited amount of sports equipment for students to borrow:

• Tennis Racquets and balls• Soccer balls• American football• Hockey sticks and puck• Basketball• Softball equipment

Our Leisure Programs follow a particular format. Sporting activities are scheduled for the afternoon allowing us to offer one main social activity each evening to encourage students to interact in an environment where English is the lingua franca.

Having one focal social activity per evening better facilitates one of the goals of our summer schools which is to marry the Leisure and Academic programs together. Students are introduced to that evening’s main activity in the classroom so as to increase their understanding and ensure their participation.

This document offers a description of all the included activities and some of the sports that non-Americans may not be familiar with. We hope you will share this document with your clients as we strongly believe that increased understanding will lead to increased participation.
