a boConcept sofa must be able to meet several needs. it must be able to fit into big rooms as well as small city flats. It must be perfect to sprawl on when watching TV or reading a book - and comfortable to sit in when working on your laptop or having a cup of coffee.

Finally, as a piece of furniture in a global concept, it must be an outstanding design.

Most people would back away, but furniture designer, Anders Nørgaard, simply

thrives on these challenges. Together with BoConcept, he provides ideas for a large

number of BoConcept chairs and sofas. One of these chairs has just received the red

dot award in the category product design 2008. See page 4.

The soft centre

'I love sofas. They form the ideal gathering point in most homes. The soft element

that's used for so many things. So it must be hard-wearing. And comfortable, too.

Rules that must be followed when a new sofa is being created. But at the same time, the

soft lines of a sofa are a play zone enabling us to create a unique piece of furniture that

oozes character and personality. It's the centre of the living room,' explains Anders

Nørgaard.

'Whenever I travel around the world I get a kick when I see one of my sofas in a

BoConcept Brand Store. The sofa combinations vary greatly from one region

to another, and the cover can change the look of the sofa completely. It is quite a

humbling experience to see your design interpreted differently throughout the world

– in Norway, New Zealand and New York.'

Front seats

This year, Anders Nørgaard also launches a new sofa line. With its voluminous shapes

and characteristic stitching, the Como sofa has a very futuristic look. 'The new Como

sofa oozes power and has a raw yet refined look. The characteristic stitching is inspired

by form-fitting clothes,' explains the designer.

As with the rest of the BoConcept sofa collection, Como is based on a modular system,

which offers the consumers the possibility to build their very own sofa. However, the

system does not contain more modules than necessary. 'Designing a sofa with 200

modules is easy. But how are the customers supposed to get an overall view? The

challenge lies in achieving only a small number of modules that can be combined in

numerous ways. This way we offer our customers a simple modular system, and we

have done our job.'

In the heart of Copenhagen, we turned a flat of 130 sq. metres into a full house with all the functionalities required for modern, urban living. The heart of the flat is the big, open plan room in two levels. This multi-functional room includes kitchen, dining area, living room and an office.

Room for everything

The open-plan room in itself is special. Even though it is a narrow room, the 5 metres

to the ceiling make the room feel airy and light. To maintain this impression, it is

important to be disciplined about the use of colours in a room with so many purposes

and so little space. White has been chosen as the base for the interior as it makes the

rooM serViCe

most of the light that flows through the big windows. It is also a neutral base that

gives room for characteristic accessories in black and metal bringing an interesting

architectural contrast to the room.

The furniture is either multi-functional or lightweight so it is easy to move around

if necessary. Even though they are eye-catching, the sculptural accessories are

transparent so they don't block the vision.

BoConcept is international design. The Spanish city of Valencia is one among many international bases for international furniture design that provide inspirational ideas for the BoConcept collection.

Traditionally, the commerce of this third largest city in Spain was based on furniture

production and retailing. Today, the city is home to museums, theatres, avant-garde

architecture and a number of international design companies. It is also where Danish

furniture designer, Morten Georgsen, runs his design company, Futhark.

Dynamic melting pot

Together with BoConcept, Morten Georgsen has been designing and developing wall

units, tables and other pieces of furniture for a number of years. His team comprises

architects and designers of different nationalities, gender and age. 'Our global

composition represents the entire BoConcept philosophy. To create simple designs

that are functional and which appeal to people in many different countries. We draw

inspiration from our visits to big cities all over the world. Big cities are cultural melting

pots that create energy and mobility and which constantly challenge us to redefine the

framework of our lifestyle,' explains Morten Georgsen.

'Designing a new product is a dynamic process. Together with BoConcept, we have

different cultural approaches to design. We challenge each other. Use each other's

experience and expertise. The perfect combination to interpret trends, so we truly

match our urban and internationally-oriented customers. Without compromising the

identity and function of the design,' explains Morten Georgsen.

Smooth sculptural storage

'Simplicity and functionality are BoConcept core values. What good is it if a piece of

furniture is beautiful – but not functional? International design is very often created

on the basis of a 'suffer for beauty' motto. Why – when you can have both?' asks

Morten Georgsen.

This attitude was used when new designs such as Fermo were created: 'The introduction

of the flat screen TV minimises the need for deep TVl Hi-Fi units. This opens up new

possibilities. Fermo has geometrical legs and smooth, white surfaces. It is the ideal

piece of furniture for flat screens. And for any room. With or without a flat screen,

Fermo is simple and functional design.'

The big screen

Flat screens are especially the in thing right now. Not only because they are attractive

in their designs. They provide the perfect picture in any light and from any angle, so

they are so much more easily placed within the room. Gone are the days where storage

units have to provide room for the traditional, bulky TV sets. Today's screens are flat.

Many of them even hang on the wall creating a whole new scene for TV storage.

The TV cabinet in the living room has storage space designed specifically for TV

equipment including a DVD machine, games and films, while neatly hiding away all

the wires and cables. The smooth surface and low design leaves plenty of room for

the elegant surround sound system without taking the attention away from the big

screen.

View from a distance

Our TV screens have slimmed down, but they are continually growing in inches. Think

about your viewing distance when finding the perfect position for your entertainment

screen:

• With 20-27" screen, your viewing distance should 1 to 2 metres away

• With 32-37" screens, you should be seated 2 to 3 metres from the screen

• With 42-46" screens, you'll need 3 to 4.5 metres between you and your TV

• For 50" screens, the best view is achieved from 3.5 to 5 metres away

Make sure that the TV is at a height where your eyes are level with the middle of the screen.

Now lean back, turn it on and enjoy the film!

In her job, she travels the world finding things just waiting to be found. Marlene Waldorf finds inspiration from all kinds of places; flea markets, restaurants, hotels – even nursery schools. Here are a few ideas on how she has translated new inspiration into functional, interior solutions in her own home.

Marlene Waldorf has an instinctive feeling for selecting pieces that can be mixed with

other things to create a unique, personal look. A skill she puts to great use in her work

as well as her home. 'Accessorizing is the fun part of interior design. I like to think

of it as the funky rather than the feminine touch. I generally tend to go for clean

surfaces and straight-lined furniture as the base. Then you can play with different

colours, materials and shapes to twist the style. Right now, my soft, dark grey sofa is

full of cushions in different ethnic patterns. The cushions are very characteristic on

their own, but put together they complement one another. It's very vibrant', explains

Marlene who uses the same method when placing distinctive vases together. 'They

bring out the best in each other', she points out.

Her love for colour shines through. Even though the walls are kept minimalist white,

splashes of colour are used to emphasise details. The orange pole provides contrast

to the sculptural staircase while complementing the kilim-covered footstools and the

childlike painting, which was actually created by a famous painter in Thailand.

HoMe BAse

Tidy up

'I like my home to be uncluttered. That doesn't mean I spend all my time tidying up.

I am very aware of creating simple, functional devices that make it easy to keep the

flat looking tidy. I like to use trays. It keeps my everyday essentials together and I can

easily find them. Oil and vinegar bottles are kept on trays in the kitchen. Decorative

perfume bottles are kept on a tray in my bathroom. Keys, sunglasses, mobile phone

and all the other things you need on hand are kept in acrylic trays on a sideboard. I

also have plenty of pegs to hang bags, coats, scarves and other clothing so nothing

is dropped on the floor. The line of pegs with portrait photos above each of them is

actually an idea I picked up from my nephew's nursery school. Here they each have

a peg with a picture above it so they can easily find their spot for hanging their coats.

Very personal. And very functional. As long as it's organised you don't have to hide

it all behind doors or in drawers. A home should have enough room to show your

personality.'

Fahrenheit° Deluxe pillowThe Deluxe pillow is constructed like a regular granulate pillow, and because it is made from pure visco-elastic foam, it has the same unique advantages as the Ergo pillow, giving you the proper support for neck and shoulders.

Fahrenheit° mattressAvailable in different sizes. A top layer of extra soft visco-elastic foam, one layer of visco-elastic foam and one layer of cold foam. Cover is removable and washable at 60° C, reducing the risk of dust mite allergy.

A Fahrenheit° mattress is built up by three layers, each with its own properties that provide optimum comfort.

A 5 cm soft, visco-elastic top mattress. An extra soft, comfortable top mattress material

Furniture care

Good things last even longer when you take care of them. Here's how you can take

better care of your BoConcept furniture.

Wood and veneer

• Wood and veneer are affected by light. For the first 6–8 weeks, when the item is

first absorbing the surrounding light, keep the surfaces clear of any objects or

decorations. It is possible that uneven light absorption could result in permanent

marks and circles. At first, new furniture will also need time to absorb light

before it will match the tone of your existing furniture

• Water is only to be used in small doses and only in the form of a damp cloth.

After wiping, always use a dry cloth

• Wood and veneer are very sensitive to liquids. Therefore, all spilled liquids are to

be wiped up immediately

• Always try to remove stains with the mildest cleaning materials. A suitable soap

solution is made from ¼ dl soap powder to 1 litre of warm water

Upholstery in general

• If possible, switch the seat and back cushions on a regular basis to extend the life

of your cushions and to ensure even wear over the years

• Cushions with a filling of foaml feathers or fibre should be shaken regularly to

ensure the form remains stable

• Make sure the legs are fitted tightly to the sofa and check them on a regular basis

• If you need to move your sofa or chair, don't drag it across the floor. Lift it to

avoid scratching the floor, or damaging its legs or frame

Furniture textiles

• Protect fabric from direct sunlight to prevent colour fading

• Ordinary cleaning: Vacuum frequently and use the BoConcept Textile Cleaner

for general cleaning

• We recommend treating your fabrics with the BoConcept Textile Protection to

prevent stains and dirt from penetrating the textile fibres before use and also

after use of BoConcept Textile Cleaner

• Remove stains by using the BoConcept Spot Remover Kit

• BoConcept stain-cleaning materials should only be used after they have been

tested on a small, less noticeable area to check the effect on the material

• Removable covers can be dry-cleaned

Leather

• Protect leather from direct sunlight and sources of heat to prevent colour fading

• For general cleaning only use a dry soft cloth

• If necessary, wipe or lightly rub the whole surface with a clean, soft cloth wrung

in soapy water

• If vacuum cleaning, use a soft brush nozzle to avoid scratching the surface

• We recommend using BoConcept Leather Cleaner for cleaning the sofal chair

2–3 times a year

• We recommend using BoConcept Leather Protector before you start using your

new piece of furniture and also after use of BoConcept Leather Cleaner

Wood furniture

You will find veneer surfaces on most of our board

furniture, such as wall systems, tables and bed frames.

Veneer is just like wood – a natural material – and

variations in the grain must be expected. This is what

makes each piece of wood furniture unique.

Glass

Most of our glass tabletops are made of tempered glass

for the safety of our customers. The coloured glass

plates are colour consistent. All edges are finished to

a high standard.

Metal parts

The majority of our metal parts are made from the

highest quality metal, keeping any impurities to the

lowest level. This makes it easier to work with and

leaves a smooth surface with minimum risk of rust.

Upholstered furniture

We are dedicated to ensuring that every single piece of

our furniture provides you with perfect sitting comfort.

That’s why we primarily use high resilient foam in our

seat cushions. High resilient foam is very structurally

stable, ensuring optimum comfort and a long lifetime.

Our back cushions are channel sewn so that they are

durable and retain their shape. Expect a 'breaking in'

period for your new sofa. The cushion fillings need time

and use to stabilise; so your cushions will feel smooth

and comfortable.

QuALiTy AnD enVironMenTAll our furniture is made from high-quality components and based on our passionate regard for functional and affordable design. To achieve this, we work with finding the right balance between carefully selected materials, beautiful design and deliberate simplicity.

The selection and application of hardwearing materials,

which contribute to the lifetime of our products, is a key

criterion for us. As is the widespread use of hard woods,

especially where strength and stability are required.

Our products are upholstered with high quality foam

that ensures both soft and rounded edges and corners,

and means that our cover fabrics wear less and last

longer.

Leathers and fabrics

We select our leather and fabrics based on the design

and function of the individual products they are to be

used for. We guarantee no colour difference between

different pieces of furniture when commissioned as one

order. Our only requirement is that all the pieces of

furniture are ordered at the same time.

All leathers and fabrics will stretch during use. To

achieve the best comfort covers cannot fit too tightly.

Therefore, some creasing may occur, but this adds

character to the sofa or chair.

Bahia leather is made from cowhide that has been

treated to provide a consistent structure and provide

protection against spotting and stains. Bahia leather is

soft and comfortable, yet hardwearing and retains its

strive to make environmental improvements in our

production processes, and we have many positive

• Our furniture lacquers are mainly UV-based,

which means we have reduced the use of organic

solvents significantly

• All our board furniture is within the E1 norm for

formaldehyde emission
