What is body image?

What is an eating disorder?

• Extremes concern with body weight and shape.

• Extreme behavior involving food

Anorexia nervosa

• Intense fear of weight gain• Cannot maintain normal body weight• Restrict food• May also excessively exercise, vomit, or use

laxatives

• Hormonal changes

Bulimia nervosa

• Secretive cycle of binge eating followed by purging

• Eating large amounts of food• Vomiting, laxative abuse, or overexercising• Damage to various organ systems

What if I think someone has an eating disorder?

• Talk to that person privately

• Explain you’re worried

• Ask how you can help

• Offer to go with them to seek help

• If that person isn’t getting better and isn’t getting help, talk to someone else – • your parent• school guidance counselor• nurse/doctor• their parent

Homework

• Write an email to an advertising company letting them know how you would change the images they portray on TV/in a magazine/on a billboard, etc.
