CURRENT UNIT- HOMEOSTASIS!
Homeostasis means balance
WHAT ARE WE LEARNING?In the last 2 weeks we talked about:• How the CELL MEMBRANE helps maintain
homeostasis inside the cell• How materials move across the cell by diffusion
and osmosis given that the cell is selectively permeable
• How cells maintain homeostasis in isotonic, hypertonic, and hypotonic environments
In the few classes we will talk about:• How your BODY maintains homeostasis by
balancing the external and internal environments• The organ systems (nervous, endocrine,
circulatory, respiratory, excretory, digestive) that help your body achieve this balance
CELLS AND THE BODYCells work best in an ISOTONIC environment.• Balance between the amount of water that moves in and amount
of water that moves out.
Your body works best when there is HOMEOSTASIS• Balance between your internal environment and external environment
CELLS AND THE BODYTake note!
The body is organized in the following way:
Cells tissues organs organ systems body!
Small BIG *KEY THEME IN BIOLOGY = Knowing about the structure of the
cells will tell you about the function of the organ system!
Chemical Cellular Tissue Organ *Organ System*
Organism
Smallest --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Largest
Building blocks of life: Carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorus
Smallest unit of lifeMake up all living things
Grouping of similar cells that perform a specific function (covering, supporting, moving, nerve transmitting)
Made of two or more tissue types that perform a specific function
Groups of organs that cooperate to accomplish a common purpose.
Highest level of organization
BODY SYSTEMS OVERVIEW• This week we are going to learn about several different
body systems. • Your job today is to work with your group members to
understand ONE of these systems:– Circulatory system: heart, blood, blood vessels– Endocrine system: hormones, brain– Nervous system: brain, spinal chord, nerves– Digestive system: mouth, stomach, intestines– Respiratory system: lungs– Excretory system: kidneys, skin
DIRECTIONS FOR JIGSAW1) Work in groups of 4.
2) Readings for your body system will be at the lab benches
3) Go through the information. Fill out the chart with your group.
4) Get ready to present and fill out the chart for the class. *You are responsible for telling everyone in the class about your body system!
5) Presentation is worth 20 pts. Everyone must say something during the presentation.
EXIT SLIP1)Free response: What does homeostasis mean?
3) Fill In The Blank: The body is always trying to balance the _______ environment with the _______ environment.
4) Free Response: What PROCESS does the body use to maintain homeostasis?
5) Free Response: Name the system that you researched and WHAT IT DOES. (will not receive credit unless you answer BOTH parts of the question!)
