Boeing to step up 777-X as Dreamliner cleared for tests 787 fleet airborne ‘in weeks’ despite ongoing questions over battery fire

Plans to speed up production of an updated Boeing 777 wide-body are ‘accelerating’, the Chi-cago-based airframer revealed last week.

Dubbed the 777-X, a new version of Boeing’s big-gest twin-engine model would have new engines, larger wings and a bigger cabin, and could be avail-able for orders by the end of the year.

The largest 777 in opera-tion seats 450 but Dubai’s Emirates, the aircraft’s biggest customer with over 100 of the aircraft in operation, has urged Boeing to produce a more fuel-efficient version with room for more passengers. Malaysia Airlines (MAS) and Airbus together marked a major achievement, with the hand-over of the 100th A380 to MAS at Airbus’ Henri Ziegler Delivery Centre in Tou-louse, France. The aircraft is the sixth A380 for MAS.Now in its sixth year of commer-

cial service, the A380 is flying with nine world class airlines. To date, the worldwide fleet has carried some 36 million passengers in 100,000 flights. Previous genera-tion Very Large Aircraft (VLA 400 seats and above) would have re-quired 140,000 flights. This reduction in flights

brings essential relief to airport-congestion and the environment. The corresponding saving of 5.7 million tonnes of CO2, demonstrates the A380 generates more revenue whilst minimising emissions and noise.

Finnair starts employee consultations in its Technical Operations organization on plans and alternatives to improve the efficiency of operations and adjust technical organiza-tion to changes made in 2012. In 2012, the size of Finnair’s operated fleet decreased and the company stopped offering maintenance services to external customers. The plans for Technical Operations include:

• Possible outsourcing of the following activ-ities: c-checks for narrow body aircraft, brake and wheel repairs and calibration laboratory;

• Centralizing maintenance operations into three hangars to improve resource utilization.

If implemented, the plans could result in a de-crease of 310 positions from the 900 positions currently in Finnair Technical Operations.

Southern Air received confirmation of its “pre-arranged” Plan of Reorganization (Plan) from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Wilming-ton, Delaware, which has been overseeing the Company’s Chapter 11 proceedings fol-lowing its voluntary filing on September 28, 2012. The Plan received substantial support from key secured creditors as well as unse-

cured creditors. The confirmation clears the way for Southern Air to emerge from its court-supervised financial restructuring as ex-pected, within the next few weeks.

JetBlue Airways and Qatar Airways signed a one-way codeshare agreement to connect the carriers’ networks via New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport and Washing-ton Dulles International Airport, subject to re-ceipt of government approval. The two airlines have been interline partners since 2011, ena-bling customers to enjoy the convenience of a single combined ticket for Qatar and JetBlue-operated flights, plus other benefits including one-stop check-in and baggage transfer.

WheelTug announced the execution of an-other Slot Purchase Agreement with an un-disclosed Boeing 737NG operator. With 135 new reservations the backlog of WheelTug Aircraft Drive Systems system grows to near-ly four hundred fifty delivery slots already reserved by eight airlines with many others currently under discussions. The WheelTug electric drive system uses high-performance electric motors, installed in the nose gear wheels of an aircraft, to provide full mobility while on the ground, without the use of the aircraft’s jet engines or tugs for both push-back and taxi operations.

OTHER NEWSquarter and year ended December 31, 2012, respectively, compared with total revenues of $6.7m and $24.6m for the same periods a year ago. The year-to-year increases were primarily due to increases in operating lease revenue and maintenance reserves revenue resulting from higher average utilization of the Com-pany’s asset portfolio in the 2012 periods and revenue from assets that were purchased sub-sequent to the 2011 periods. The Company also announced that its credit facility has been amended to, among other things, increase borrowing capacity from $90m to $130m, ex-tend the maturity date to September 30, 2015 and add a participant to the lender syndicate. Union Bank, N.A. is the Lead Arranger and Ad-ministrative Agent for the facility.
