Börger Rotary Lobe Pumps Construction, Drive and Assembly

Börger Rotary Lobe Pumps are made of a small number of parts. The different sizes of the casings and rotors are manufactured in a single piece construction, quite different from the high number of components normally found in comparable pumps. The result is a robust and compact rotary lobe pump design, which is known for quiet, safe and

reliable operation, long operational life and for ease of maintenance. The replacement of wear parts can be managed, in-situ, by service personnel in the blink of an eye without the removal of pipe systems or drive units. Simplicity is one of Börger's trademarks.Börger rotary lobe pumps are universally mountable and are

suited for many different types of installation. For example, electric, combustion and hydraulic drives can be utilized. Complete mobile aggregates can be manufactured to customer specification and are finished in our own workshop.

Operating Principle

Börger Rotary Lobe Pumps are self priming, valveless positive displacement pumps. The synchronized counter-rotating rotors seal towards each other. Chambers are formed between the rotor vanes and the casing surrounding them. These chambers move from the suction to the pressure side creating a vacuum. The conveyed product in the chambers is displaced through the discharge-side casing opening. The flow direction is easily reversible by changing the direction of rotation. Pumps have a distinct advantage where a reverse flow is needed.

1 Quick-release cover The door to the interior of the pump and quick access to all wetted parts.

2Axial and radial casing protection

Casing liners are available in wear-resistant steel, stainless steel, plastic or ceramic.

3 Rotor

Coatings for the rotor are made of various elastomers, plastics, solid metal or ceramic-coated. The rotors are specially selected for each individual application. Thanks to the sophisticated modular system, nearly all rotors can be fitted into any Börger Rotary Lobe Pump.

4 Shaft sealsOur three product lines Classic, Select and Protect offer a suitable shaft seal for every application. We also supply customized shaft seals for special applications (for example, packing).

5Medium unwetted shaft

The carrier shafts of the Börger Rotary Lobe Pumps do not come into contact with the pump medium due to its self-sealing design.

6Quench and control chamber

The control liquid in the intermediate chamber of the pump chamber ensures a high level of safety and gear protection.

7Pump Casing in block design

Different rotary lobe types with various materials of construction such as elastomer, plastic or metal are used depending on the fluid characteristics. Viscous, abrasive and aggressive pumped media can be handled easily with the variable and modular rotor design capabilities.

Thanks to the special, patented construction, the robust rotor core and durable shaft remain non-wetted. We consider all factors when determining the selection of the best suited rotor for each individual application, therefore meeting the special demands of our customers.

In case of changing operating conditions, due to the modular construction different rotor designs can be retro-fitted to an existing pump unit.

Both, repair- and downtime, cost money. Production and process time should not be lost due to maintenance. Following this basic principle, Börger has been constantly striving to perfect its rotary lobe pumps. The result is an extremely efficient, reliable and easy to maintain pump aggregate that is worldwide unmatched.

All replacement and wear parts are extremely durable, resilient and affordable. You won't be forced into any expensive maintenance contracts with Börger – simply carry out any maintenance and repairs yourself! The unique MIP property of our pumps makes this possible. MIP or Maintenance in Place means that all replaceable parts can be

easily installed and removed by maintenance personnel, in-situ, without having to remove any pipe or drive systems.

The quick-release cover enables easy access to the inner components of the pump. All wetted parts can be quickly maintained and replaced when necessary – without removal of pipe or drive system

All pump models are manufactured using single piece construction. That won't be copied easily. The AL, PL, CL, FL, EL and XL series allow for a rated capacity between 5 – 5,000 usgpm (1 – 1,000 m³/h). Whatever pump size is right for you depends on its intended purpose, installation location and the characteristics of the pumped fluid. Whatever you need, we'll give you thorough technical advice.

When we select a rotary lobe pump model for you, we consider the large variety of different pump sizes and materials available, including the best suited shaft seal and drive selection, so that your customized pump is built for its intended use. The pump casing is constructed using grey cast iron as standard. It is given either an abrasive-resistant coating or is finished entirely in stainless or duplex steel for corrosive applications.

All elastomers can be supplied in an almost unlimited material range with various characteristics. Our performance driven, reliable and robust pumps benefit not only from the Maintenance in Place feature (MIP) but also from high efficiencies resulting in low energy consumption, reducing the life cycle costs to a minimum. All Börger Pumps are available in an ATEX variant.

Three Product Lines –Three Outstanding Solutions

Börger has been supplying high-quality rotary lobe pumps for more than 25 years. From a variety of sizes, types andmaterials, the matching rotary lobe pump can be configured for each application. Three product lines are available with various shaft seals including many customizable features, all with standardized pump characteristics.

Being based on the same pump chamber, the Product Lines Classic, Select and Protect offer a high rotor and material availability.

The Börger Classic Rotary Lobe Pump product line has been well-proven for many years and is the basic model of our rotary lobe pumps with a large-dimensioned, pressureless fluid-filled intermediate chamber.

Based on the advantages of the Classic Product Line with indi-vidually controllable, pressurized mechanical seals with single seal chambers.

The Product Line Protect with double acting mechanical seals is the perfect solution for high requirements with problematic medium. The gear assembly with open intermediate area towards the pump casing allows for fitting of double acting mechanical seals. With the pressurized buffer fluid between two mechanical seals, any penetration of conveying product in between the sliding surfaces is reliably avoided.

Classic – Classically Good!

The low number and compact nature of the individual components will surprise anyone who disassembles a Börger Rotary Lobe Pump. The different sizes of the casings and rotors are manufactured in a single piece construction, quite different from the high number of components normally found in comparable pumps. The results are robust and compact rotary lobe pumps, which are known for quiet, safe and reliable operation, long operational life and for ease of maintenance. All replaceable parts can be

easily installed and removed by maintenance personnel, in-situ. MIP = Maintenance in Place.

The Select Pump follows the base principle of the Classic Product Line. Between timing gear and pump casing, the mechanical shaft seals are individually pressurized.

The Select Product Line is particularly suitable for crystalline, toxic and sensitive fluids. Due to the pressurized area between the seals, medium is unable to penetrate in between the surfaces of the mechanical seal faces.

Additionally, the pumped fluid does not come into contact with the environment. Any seal leaks can be promptly detected and prevented by visual and sensory monitoring. Since the shafts seals are individually pressurized, it is possible to monitor each seal assembly of the two shafts separately.

Different needs require different materials and dimensional features. Börger offers a wide material variety. The pump casings are available from cast iron up to duplex-stainless steel, the casing protection plates provide materials up to ceramic and the rotors include a wide range of geometries and materials (elastomer coated, PUR, PTFE up to stainless steel).

Design of the Select Product Line shaft sealDue to the pressurized area between the seals, medium is unable to penetrate in between the surfaces of the mechanical seals. The medium does not come into contact with the atmosphere. Any heat development of the seal is transferred by the buffer fluid. All parts of the seals are accessible and replaceable via the pump chamber (MIP = Maintenance in Place).

The buffer fluid or the pressurized flushing liquid is fed in from the lowest point. This is made possible with the special intermediate plate. Vent or drain connections are located as highest points. Sight glasses (Level Control) with fittings and connections are available within our delivery program.

Protect – Double Acting, Double Secure, Double Protected!

The professional among the Börger Rotary Lobe Pumps is the Protect Product Line which incorporates the highest degree of operational safety for the mechanical seals with problematic fluids. The timing gear with optimized axial tolerances is separated from the pump chamber. In between are two pressurized double-acting mechanical seals fitted. The pressurization can be achieved with a thermosyphon system.

The Protect pumps are particularly suitable for critical liquids (such as toxic or explosive pumped media), as well as highly abrasive conveying products. Protect pumps are also suitable for pumping latex, which often forms deposits between the seal faces causing possible leakage issues.

It is essential that the pressure level of the clean buffer fluid is kept higher than the maximum discharge pressure in the pump chamber. In this way the double-acting mechanical seals reliably prevent the pumped medium from leaking out of the pump chamber. The pressurized buffer fluid also prevents the conveying product from penetrating in between the seal faces.

Börger Multicrusher Construction, Drive and Assembly

The Multicrusher incorporates the same unique advantages of the Börger MIP Design as the Rotary Lobe Pump: MIP (Maintenance In Place) allows the quick and convenient replacement of all wetted parts without removal of pipes, drives or other components of the macerating unit by your own staff. The unrivaled maintenance friendliness guarantees low life cycle costs and minimized downtime!

No matter if you integrate the Multicrusher in a pump operated system or you install it as an individual unit, the flexibility is superb! Because of the quick access to the rotating parts of the Multicrusher, the blade combinations, blade geometry and thickness can all be customized depending on the application and the particle size to be achieved.

The Multicrusher is a self-sufficient macerating unit with enormous “Pull-In-Function”. The aggregate can be installed in line sufficiently flooded or on suction and discharge sides of pumping systems.

17

Convincing Features

Macerating elementsThe individual blades are assembled on a heavy duty, hexagonal shaft sleeve. The blade configuration is positioned in place with one central bolt. Through the quickrelease cover all wetted parts can be exchanged in minimal time. Several blade designs are available.

Shaft sealThe unit is equipped with a robust mechanical seal. The integrated quench and control liquid filled intermediate chamber provides continuous mechanical seal lubrication and prohibits fluid penetration into the gear unit.

Block constructionThe bolt connected grinder and gear casing are both designed as a compact one-piece construction. The Multicrusher, combined with a gear motor and connected through a flexible coupling on a common base frame, presents a compact macerating aggregate.

Rotation speedsSince the Multicrusher is not constructed with an integrated gear reduction, a wide range of operating speeds and various aggregate designs are available. Low HP units are best suited for water like fluids and low operation speeds. Increased solids concentration and/or improved macerating results require higher speeds and torques.

Bearing frameThe gear assembly represents a cantilevered shaft design. The gear unit is a sealed component with robust gears and bearings.

Special constructionThe twin shaft grinder incorporates a strong “Pull-In-Function”. Börger develops customized fluid / solids handling solutions with auger feed systems combined with macerating and pumping equipment.

Börger shows teeth to problem cases. The macerating results depend on a variety of variables, including the blade configuration, the blade thickness and teeth design as well as the rotation speeds. Nine blade configurations are currently available. The relative rotation speed between the two grinder shafts ensure an optimized macerating effect. Hard metal tool steel provides long lasting sharpness and cut performance.

Worldwide unique and exclusive from Börger: Unrivalled MIP-Design

reduces life cycle cost and downtime.

Flow directionThe Börger Multicrusher is a symmetrical, reversible macerating machine. By turning the blades 180 degrees and by changing the rotation direction, the suction and discharge side of the macerating unit can be reversed.

Börger Multichopper Construction, Drive and Assembly

The Börger Multichopper incorpo-rates advantageous technical and operational design features. Knife tension to the cutting plate (perfora-ted disc) is adjustable from outside the unit. A central shaft clamp construction maintains the axially fixed blade alignment and tension to the reversible cutting plate. The shaft seal is supplied with the proven Börger mechanical seal with quench

and control. The Multichopper incorporates Börger’s well-known maintenance friendly design. All rotating parts can be accessed, main-tained or replaced via the removable front access cover, fitted with an eyebolt clamped construction. With no requirement for special tools. The Börger Multichopper is available in two designs. The Multichopper plus is equipped with a debris collector

for solids which cannot be macera-ted, while the Multichopper pure is designed to have no cavities in which the medium can become entrapped. Hence the Multichopper pure is built without a debris collector. The Multi-chopper is available in grey cast iron and stainless steel designs.

MCA = Mechanical Cut AdjustmentAutomatic adjusting device ensures constant optimized cut performance

Unique in the world and exclusive from Börger:Börger Multichopper MIP-Design allows the quick and convenient maintenance or replacement of all wetted parts, without removal of pipes, drives or other components. By your own staff.Quick – Uncomplicated – Inexpensive

Börger has razor sharp solutions!Single shaft grinder with central cutting plate and effective blades for solids reduction in liquid phases. The chopping result is mainly determined by the design of the cutting plate, the operating speed and the fluid velocity through the unit.

The MCA unit is an adjustment unit which works automatically. The rotating MCA cylinder (A), attached externally, works with a constant cutting load and pulls the blades onto the cutting plate with the minimum force necessary. Only a small amount of load is used so that the cutting blades are only lightly held against the cutting plate in the working position with low stress.

When a clearance between the blades and cutting plates develops, the axial traction ensures that the cutting interplay between the blades and the cutting plate is always ideally set, guaranteeing that the Multichopper has an optimal cutting effect. The cutting preload is set completely independently. This technology is absolutely maintenance-free.

Intelligent technology in the adjustment cylinder (MCA) prevents the blades from lifting and resetting. The adjustment unit is located externally. The entire internal macerating space of the Multichopper is not restricted by any adjustment devices. Here, the entire space is available for the medium to be chopped.

Direction of flowThe direction of flow can be determined onsite due to reversible flange connections (Multichopper plus) or by rotating the casing by 180° (Multichopper pure).

At a glance:- The MCA unit is fi tted externally, axial

to the knife unit (B).

- The MCA technology uses a clamp axle to hold the blades against the cutting plate with minimal preloading.

- The MCA unit only allows one direction of movement. The blades cannot be lifted from the cutting plate.

- The knife unit, clamp axle and MCA form a patented unit which rotates as one.

Börger RotorrakeConstruction, Drive and Assembly

The Rotorrake is a robust chopping unit using inline design. Knives and counter knives are pushed on to the carrier shaft alternatively. The counter knives are fixed stationary inside the casing. The rotating shaft is directly driven via the drive and bearing assembly. The Rotorrake with its rough macerating effect allows for high throughput capacities.

Solids laden fluid is fed through the Rotorrake. Separation of hard particles is achieved by knife rotation against fixed counter knives. Stones and debris drop into the debris collector. Reduce-able solids are chopped by further knife rotation against the fixed knives. Both Knives and counter knives are reversible and can be used from either side.
