Overview/Intro.
U nderstanding the intercultural andregional aspects of sustainable
agriculture is crucial in finding viablepathways to longterm success in Centraland Eastern European agriculture. Thissummer school will give the students thepossibility to improve their knowledge andgrow their skillset regarding theintercultural and social aspects, anthropiclandscape and natural resources related tosustainability in agriculture and the foodindustry in the Danube region.
The main focus of the course will be onselfdevelopment in a multiculturalEuropean region through interactiveexercises and discussion. At the end of thiscourse, students should be able to identifysome of their own culturallybiasedassumptions and behavior, and begin toobjectively address the benefits of EUmulticulturalism for regional agriculture andfood industry.
The courses will combine theoreticalaspects and field trips in order to broadenhorizons and provide life changingexperiences in the context of globalchanges, ecosystem degradation,biodiversity conservation and thetechnological and economic ability toadapt. The Banat region inherentlyintercultural and diverse will serve as thebasis for the exploration of interculturaltopics and their implications on agricultureand the food industry in the Danube region.
USAMVBT
The Banat’s University of AgriculturalSciences and Veterinary Medicine Banat
from Timioara (USAMVBT) is an institutionspecialized in agronomical and veterinaryhigher education, with a national andEuropean span.
USAMVBT
Its traditions are connected to theestablishment of the Faculty of Agronomyin 1945, which functioned besides thePolytechnic Institute from Timioara. In thesocioeconomical and political conditionsof the time, King Mihai I of Romaniapromulgated the Law 617/1945 for thecreation of the Faculty of Agronomy withinthe Polytechnics of Timioara. After 1989,the University has had a continuousevolution, by the diversification of domainsand specializations in the educational offer.At present, USAMVBT functions with 6faculties (Agriculture, Horticulture andForestry, Agricultural Management,Veterinary Medicine, Animal Science, andBiotechnologies, Food ProcessingTechnology), with a number of 22licentiate’s degree programmes, 22programmes of master studies and 2doctoral schools (www.usabtm.ro).
How to Participate
The CASEE summer school is open to allstudents who are interested in
expanding their knowledge about theintercultural aspects of agriculturalsustainablility. Current BSc and MScstudents are welcome to join. Students canregister through the international relationsoffice at their home universities.
CostsStudents are responsible for paying a €60registration fee upon arrival as well as thecosts of travel to and from Timisoara. TheCASEE consortium will cover the costs ofhousing in the USAMVBT dormitories andmeals for the duration of the course.

organic food, food microbiology. Inaddition, educational priorities in the area ofagriculture and the environment in theDanube region will be discussed and eachpartner university will present its teachingand research activities. Last but not least,topicrelated excursions (e.g. workshops ontraditional food) in the Banat region willcomplete the program.
The courses will culminate in a finalgroup project where students will worktogether in applying the ideas and practicesfrom the school to real world challengesand develop feasible solutions withmulticultural perspectives.
Timisoara
Timisoara and the Banat
The Banat is a geographical and historicalregion in Central Europe currently
divided between three countries: theeastern part lies in western Romania (thecounties of Timiș, CarașSeverin, Arad southof the Mureș, and Mehedinți), the westernpart in northeastern Serbia (the SerbianBanat, mostly included in Vojvodina, exceptfor a small part included in BelgradeRegion), and a small northern part insoutheastern Hungary (Csongrád county). Itis populated by Romanians, Serbs,Hungarians, Roma, Germans, Krashovani,Ukrainians, Slovaks, Bulgarians, Czechs,Croats and other ethnicities.
The Banat is a part of the Pannonian Basinbordered by the River Danube to the south,the River Tisa to the west, the River Mureș tothe north, and the Southern CarpathianMountains to the east. Its historical capitalwas Timișoara,now one of the largestRomanian cities, with a population of303,708 inhabitants (the third mostpopulous city in the country, as of 2011),and considered the informal capital city ofthe historical region of Banat, Timișoara isthe main social, economic and culturalcenter in the western part of Romania.
About CASEE
As a regional network of ICA for Centraland South Eastern Europe, the CASEE
Network was founded in 2010 upon theinitiative of the University of NaturalResources and Life Sciences, Vienna, andinvolves Life Science Universities in Bulgaria,the Czech Republic, Croatia, Hungary,Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Serbia,Ukraine and Austria.
