As market leaders in street furniture, Townscape have produced this brochure which brings together thewidest selection of bollards available on the market in terms of design, function and combination of different rawmaterials and finishes.

All Townscape bollards are manufactured with strict quality control procedures taking place at each stage ofmanufacture. Following painting, the bollards receive their last quality check prior to packaging and despatch tosite.

Townscape advise that a maintenance programme must be established for all their products. Vandalism is anaccepted fact of society in today’s world which sadly has an effect on street furniture. In order to maintainTownscape bollards, particularly steel and cast iron designs, regular maintenance is essential.

Commander

Steel BollardsThe Townscape steel bollard range contains a wide variety of designs whichcombine high strength along with a style to complement any landscapeenvironment. Designs vary from a simple steel post to more decorativestyles in round and square formats.

The Coldstream has established itself as one of our best selling bollards, andits streamlined style suits both traditional and modern site application. TheGateshead is slightly more decorative with two prominent recess rings.

The Commander range of bollards takes its name from the decorative ringspositioned some 100mm from the bollard top. All the bollards are circular insection and due to the enormous popularity of this economy design, thereis now a choice of 7 diameter sizes 90, 114, 127, 140, 170, 195 and 200mm.The above ground measurement is 900mm.

These designs are all manufactured from high quality steel hollow section, the machined construction resulting in a strong and durable end productwith a minimal maintenance routine. All recesses can be colouredseparately or highlighted with reflective strips to the main colour of thebollard or to accommodate multi-coloured schemes and special liveries.Above or below ground lengths can be shortened or lengthened to suitcustomer specification.

Super Plus Finish

Townscape’s multi-stage finishing process whichmarries all polyester powder coatingbenefits to specialist pre-treatment and zincplating process remains one of the strongest andmost durable surface finishes currentlyavailable.

Firstly, all steel bollard components arethoroughly shot-blasted to remove rust andother surface contamination and promote goodmechanical adhesion of subsequent zinc andpowder coatings.

Secondly, alkaline-degreasing, acid-pickling andelectroplating processes chemically cleanse andautomatically deposit 15 microns of hard zincand zinc-iron alloy evenly over all steel work, whilst maintaining original surface smoothnessand fine detail.

Thirdly, the zinc plating is then chromatepassivated and rinsed prior to further specialsurface treatments, to ensure maximumchemical adhesion of subsequent polyesterfinishes, both initially and under exposedconditions experienced when in use.

Coldstream

Gateshead

Finally, a typical 75-100 microns of high qualitypolyester powder is applied electrostatically thenoven cured to produce a very hard finish withexcellent adhesion between the zinc and polyesterinterfaces.

The new finishing system is completely durableoutdoors, even if severely damaged through to thesteel substrate. The exposed polyester coatingedges will not lift, and the sacrificial and sealingaction of the zinc layer will prevent unsightly brownrust staining. The product appearance is thusmaintained for much longer before greatlysimplified maintenance and repair procedures areimplemented.

Alternatively, bollards can be supplied shotblastedand painted with a two pack epoxy primer for sitepainting after installation. This can help minimisesite damage and facilitate colour matching with paintwork on other items.

All bollards are despatched to site in pristinecondition, adequate use of corrugated wrapper, bubble wrap and protective cartons is made.

Gemini Major

Cardinal Minor and Cardinal Demi

Metro 127 Cannon Manchester MKII

The Gemini bollard is produced with a cast iron top welded to a steeltube shank forming a strong and sturdy product. It is available in twoformats Major and Minor. The bollard has an unusual futuristicappearance and if required, the recess detail can be highlighted in acontrasting colour to the rest of the bollard, or for site visibility can betreated with a reflective material.

The Cardinal bollard is a new design, currently available in two sizes,Minor and Demi. The bollards are again constructed by the use of acast iron top welded to a steel tube shank achieving a strong bulk ofbollard without the disadvantage of excessive weight.

Part of a co-ordinated suite, the Metro bollard is offered in two tubediameter sizes and has a steel tube shank with an aluminium capfeaturing the Metro oval slot pattern in a raised profile all around thecap. A seat, litter bin, tree grid and guard are all offered to match thebollard.

The Cannon and Manchester MkII bollards both have attractive capand collar features. The collars on the Manchester have a ribbedouter edge, which can be further enhanced with the use of acontrasting colour.

The selection of a steel bollard isusually based on its style suiting thearchitectural environment of the sitewhere it is to be positioned.Townscape has always maintained aninnovative approach to design andthe bollards shown on these pagesoffer exciting modern alternatives tothe traditional Victoriana designs.

To add interest on a bollard surface, the Trafalgar, Piccadilly and Russell bollards have decorative recess panelson each face of the square section. The shape features of diamond, circle or slot are highlighted in a separatecolour offering an exciting and colourful design alternative. This idea can be developed to suit a specific projectas other shapes or symbols can be produced to special order.

Square section steel bollards can beused to create a completely differenteffect to circular bollards on a scheme.Shown here are the Grenadier andGrenadier Major which both have recessfeatures.

Nile Aztec

Stainless Steel

The Nile and Aztec bollards are typical of Townscape’s design philosophy of functional performance allied todistinctive appearance. The light weight of these bollards is desirable where removable units are required.

The consistently close-grainedtextured caps are high aluminiumcastings secured to aluminiumshafts.

A different emphasis can be puton the product’s function byusing high visibility colours forcaps and neutral shades on theshafts.

Alternatively where more subtlecontrasts are appropriate thespecifier may choose theirpreferred combination fromany of Townscape’s extensivestandard range of electrostaticallydeposited polyester powdercoatings.

The Nexus bollards are high-tech stainless steel designs. The Cappa and Zeta combine the use of stainless steelwith decorative detail in cast aluminium, this detail being finished with a polyester powder coating. As well asthese decorative designs, plain stainless steel posts can also be offered in a variety of tube diameters. They aremanufactured from grade 316 tube, this material offers probably the best protection against the majority of acidsand chemicals.

Tube sizes available are 42, 48, 76, 89, 104, 114, 133 and 154mm, they are available in standard lengths of 700-750above ground and 900-950 above ground. Flat or dome caps can be specified. Removable and on ground fixunits can be supplied.

The standard finish will be 240 grit (satin) to complement the stainless steel seating, planters and litter bins.

Slimline Bollards

Sprite

Protector

De-Luxe

The standard range of Slimline designs has been extended to include threeadditional profile options in the form of the Slimline Sprite, Slimline Protector andthe Slimline Deluxe. The three profiles are available with four ground fixingoptions: On-ground, In-ground, Fold-down and Removable.

The Slimline Sprite Fold-down has been developed from the original Hinged Slimlineand has an upgraded hinge mechanism and keeper plate while still retaining itsessentially Slimline look which is particularly appropriate for private car parks.

Slimline Protector Fold-down while still having a discreet appearance is formed froma 60 x 60mm hollow section mounted on a robust hinge spindle secured within asemi-circular ground anchor assembly.

The hinged spindle is secured to the anchor assembly by purpose-made heavycap-screws that work in nylon bushes. These ensure a long-life smooth actionwhen raising and lowering the bollard. A keeper plate integral with the bollardand concealed by the semi-circular sides of the anchor assembly locates with ahole in the side of this assembly to accept a hasp lock to secure the bollard in thevertical position.

In the horizontal at-rest position the bollard is supported by a short spigot fromits front face and is retained by the lock which is secured to the semi-circularanchor assembly.

At rest the unit’s maximum height above ground is 105mm which givesadequate clearance for all popular production car underbody configurations.Specifiers are advised to check that this height is not exceeded duringinstallation and that no vehicles of any type with excessively lowground-clearance are likely to use the area.

The semi-circular sides of the anchor assembly have been carefully profiled toensure that rubbish is not retained within the body of the assembly thus preventingthe free action of the hinge.

The Slimline De Luxe Fold-down has the same anchor assembly as the Protector butis formed from 60mm diameter tube with an incised band feature that can becoloured to contrast with the main column of the bollard. Alternatively this bandcan carry reflective material.

On-ground designs have a square plate at ground level with four holes for ragboltfixing. The In-ground type has an extended shank for concreting into the sub-gradeand the Removable is extended to fit into an in-ground boot closed by a hinged platewith a securing slot which when the bollard is in place locks to a tab on the bollardshank.

Amsterdam Paris

Paris

Amsterdam

The Amsterdam and Paris guardposts are ideal for architectural and domesticsituations.

Both Paris and Amsterdam guardposts offer a ‘cast look’ at an economical cost.Made by a unique spinning method they have a strength that belies theirrefined appearance. The spun section of the slender Paris is confined abovethe optimum point of impact of private motor vehicles and is welded to astandard heavy-duty tubing below this point. The broader Amsterdam alsohas a tube of a similar gauge which forms the lower and in-ground section.

The cost and overall proportions of the designs are aimed at multipleinstallation at frequent intervals, not only to keep vehicles from encroaching onpedestrian ways but equally to deter pedestrians from straying from the straightand narrow path.

Defender Steel

Defender Steel with extended collarDefender Concrete

Defender SeriesThese unique bollards have a specialist function and have beendeveloped by Townscape especially for supermarket car parks althoughthe design can be equally useful for other applications where trolleysare used by members of the public, such as bus, railway stations andairports.

Two basic designs are available, one in steel and the other in precastconcrete. Both feature a polypropylene collar with a ribbed effect, positioned to withstand impact from trolley or other light vehicletraffic.

The Defender steel has an overall length of 1200mm with 900mmgenerally above ground and a 150mm diameter shaft. The collar sits150mm from the top of the bollard and is riveted securely to the steelbollard.

The Defender concrete is also 1200mm overall in length but has a largerdiameter of 253mm. The collar sits 150mm from the top of the bollardand is attached to the concrete in the manufacturing process.

The two above products are designed for use with supermarkettrolleys as the collar sits at the correct height to withstand impact fromsuch trolleys. However for luggage trolleys, the collar is extended to alower level on the bollard in order to align with trolley design.

As far as finish is concerned the collar feature is black as standardalthough other colours may be available for large quantity orders. TheDefender steel can be polyester powder coated in the Townscape rangeof eighteen standard colours. The Defender concrete is offered in anyexposed aggregate finish usually using a 6mm size aggregate.

Cast Iron BollardsAn extensive range of cast iron bollard designs is available forprestige areas and to complement places of architecturalinterest. These bollards reflect periods of English history indesign, such as Edwardian, Regency, etc. whilst employingmodern day techniques to ensure a high quality finish.

Most bollards can be adapted in many ways to suit customerrequirements. For example, an extension pole can be addedto a bollard to accommodate a light fittings, jardiniere ordirectional fingers.

Additionally access covers for lighting switchgear can beincorporated in the base of some of the bollards. The CapstanMinor is offered as a post and rail system.

Although it is possible to modify a cast iron bollard to make itremovable, it is not always practical in the case of the largerbollards as they are extremely heavy and almost impossible foran individual to lift out of the ground.

Manufacturing in ductile s.g. iron to BS 2789:1985 grade 420/12ensures that a combination of high strength and goodresistance against corrosion is possible.

Cast iron bollards are finished to a high specification. Aftershotblasting, they are primed to a thickness of 75 microns witha special rust inhibiting primer, which, will itselfwithstand exterior exposure for three years. A finalapplication of polyester powder gives the bollard its finalcolour coating.

Other street furniture items in s.g. cast iron to the same highspecification are also available to complement these bollarddesigns. Please refer to separate brochures or CD ROM.

Derby Fold-Down BollardsThis unique product fills a gap in the market toresolve a problem situation which every specifierwill encounter at some time when working on aproject. A row of Derby Fold Down Bollards formsan ideal temporary barrier arrangement which issolid enough to deter ram raider attacks etc. butwill allow fast access for emergency vehicles.

This product has proved ideal for part-time pedes-trianisation schemes in areas such as marketswhere pedestrian access is only essential duringcertain hours of the day. As the bollards are raisedvehicles are re-routed, but after market hours, thenormal traffic flow can be resumed by folding awaythe bollards.

The unfortunate but acknowledged high level ofvandalism in our society today puts addedpressure on the performance of a ‘removable bollard’. This Fold Down Bollard lessens the risk of vandal attack inthat it can be easily raised and locked into an effective vertical position when required, yet unobtrusive and safelystowed when lowered and completely covered by a neat fitting lid when not in use.

The original design of the slide-box mechanism is owned by Derby City Council and the complete unit wasdeveloped at Townscape in conjunction with Derby City Council to perfect the operation of this product. Bollarddesigns remain the property of Townscape Products Limited.

The Fold Down Bollard is manufactured in mild steel, and is available in two styles, the “standard” and the “widebody”.

The “standard” body is fabricated to dimensions that allow slim bollards up to maximum of 90mm shaft diameterto be incorporated whilst the “wide body” will allow bollards of a more substantial appearance and to amaximum shaft size of 140mm to be fitted. The overall dimensions of the “wide body” are naturally larger. Theprinciples and operation of both styles are the same.

The units comprise a “lift and slide” mechanism to which is attached the bollard, the box section and finally thelid. The box section is fixed below ground level with the lid when in closed position, lying flush with thesurrounding floor level. The lift and slide section allows the bollard to be lowered from its vertical ‘in place’position into the box section by simply removing the lid, lowering the bollard into the box section and replacinglid.

Standard units are available with hinged lid section and can be locked into position by either a padlock or with anewly introduced pawl lock with a simple 90 degree turn to lock operation. The pawl lock has a triangular (8mm)head style and is recessed below the top surface of the cover plate. The lid on the standard unit can be modifiedto be completely removable, lift off, however, care and attention to lid weight must be observed by specifierbecause of attendant risk.

The hinged lid only is offered for the wide body version again, pawl locks or single padlock fixing.

The Fold Down bollards offer effective barriers that can be swiftly raised or lowered and completely hidden fromsight with the flush fitting lid not creating a hazard to either pedestrian or vehicle. All bollards are fitted with asteel lifting ring manufactured from 8mm diameter bar, to assist in the lifting or lowering operation. It is possiblefor wheelchair users to operate this product with the standard body, hinged lid and lightweight bollard.

For options, please see line drawings on page 16

It is essential when employing this type of bollard that installation is carried out correctly and adequate provisionis made with the sub grade to allow drainage. As with all moving parts, routine lubrication to ensure continuingfree movement is necessary. Regular maintenance and cleaning is required to ensure the box is kept free ofdebris.

BollardExtensionsMost steel and cast iron bollards canbe fitted with an extension columnwhich is often required in a row ofbollards where a higher level is neededat intervals to accommodate lightfittings, directional signs or purelydecorative hanging baskets orplanting features. The columns arewelded to the bollard and can be anylength up to five metres overall.

Finger posts can be supplied withwording in any typeface andhighlighted in gold or other colour.Any number of fingers can besupported by the extensions as they are simply fixed to the extension poleby a collar which is then secured in the correct position.

Planting features are particularly popular as the high level plants are lessprone to theft and vandal abuse. Self-watering units can be supplied forease of watering on site.

If a lighting unit is to be added, a door facility can be incorporated into thebollard base so that electrical components can be fitted and maintained.

Hanging basket arms, banner support rails and post caps are all availableand can be fixed in position before despatch.

The extension pole can also house modern communication andsecurity devices, camouflaged by hanging baskets if necessary.

Barriers and Rails

Planter Surround

Capstan Post and Rail

Greenwich Barrier

Bollards are extremely versatile units whichcan easily be transformed into numerouskinds of railing systems for pedestrian/trafficmanagement. Shown here is a plantersurround, an ideal way of offeringprotection to open planting areas, as wellas straight run of bollard post and railapplication. All steel bollards can easily beadapted to take steel tubular railings.

The Capstan cast iron bollard has been modified to provide apurpose design post and rail system. The bollard has beenreduced in size proportionally to accommodate a knee highrailing, the posts are positioned at 1.5 metre intervals asstandard although this can be altered to accommodate siteconditions.

Some areas are well suited to timber post and rail systems andthis Greenwich barrier is a typical example.

18

Page 21: Bollards Issue 01

Barrier widths to suitcustomer requirements areavailable up to a maximum of5.5 metres, or 10.0 metreswhen double unit used.

The barrier gate is the mainalternative to the boombarrier and is generally usedfor applications where thegateway needs to be leftopen for longer periods. The vertical posts for this unitare based on the steel bollardrange with a gate structurefrom rectangular hollowsection. A hold back post forthe gate is recommended. The barrier gate is suppliedin widths between 2.5and 5.5 metres to suit sitecircumstances. As anadditional option, a doublebarrier gate is availablefor two-way trafficthoroughfare. Maximumstandard width for doublebarrier is 9.5 metres. Allbarriers are manufacturedto specific customerrequirements and detailedquotations can be supplied onrequest.

Boom Barrier

Barrier Gate

Barrier panels are usedextensively to protectpedestrians and cyclists fromtraffic flow and because oftheir simple structure, they canbe produced to virtually anyheight or length with a choiceof single or double inner rails. As well as standardgalvanising and polyesterpowder finish, these barrierpanels are also offered instainless steel which mayappeal more in shopping mallsand other interior applications.

19

Suitable for warehouses, factories, dockyards etc., the boom barrier provides an ideal method of creating asecurity check point or simply preventing vehicle entry/exit. The vertical posts are a modified version of the steelbollard range and the horizontal barrier arm is manufactured from rectangular hollow section with acounterbalanced end. The unit is manually operated with little effort required and may be locked in positionwhen not in use.

Page 22: Bollards Issue 01

Knee Rail

Knee Rail

Situations often arise where boundary demarcation is necessary without making the fence or barrier the centralfocal point. Townscape’s Knee Rail fence is the ideal answer for these areas as the low level diamond shaped railis a neat construction which is clearly visible, but unobtrusive in appearance.

Usually manufactured for level ground, there is however a version which has a provision for 10 degreehorizontal or lateral movement to suit sloping ground and this should be specified at order stage.

Generally manufactured in 1200mm long bays, the knee rail can be ordered in sizes and quantities to suit anysituation. Posts are available for straight sections, corners or T junctions enabling complete areas to be fencedoff with ease. Where required, end make-up bays can be specially ordered to suit circumstances. The posts are800mm overall and generally 500mm is left above ground. The horizontal rails and vertical posts are both of highstrength square hollow steel sections (40mm and 60mm) ensuring a combination of long life and pleasingdesign. Standard finish is black although any RAL colour can be supplied to special order.

Installation

The knee rail is easily installed by planting a post 300mm into a hole and securing with concrete, then by slidinga horizontal rail into position before securing the following post. Care should always be taken to ensure that thehorizontal rails are level and in-line to create a neat and tidy effect.

Removable BollardsOn sites where regular or occasional access is a criteria all bollards can be manufactured as removableversions. When considering a removable bollard please refer to the weights in the bollard technical data toensure that personnel removing the bollard can handle the weight.

Two versions of shoe are available, standard and economy. The standard version is a bollard supplied completewith a sleeve which holds the bollard in position and can be locked by means of a conventional padlock. Whenthe bollard is removed, the hole in the ground is covered by a hinged lid. A square baseplate is attached to thesleeve which can accommodate a round or square bollard, the square baseplate varies in size according to thediameter of the bollard. Please check this detail prior to specifying.

21

The majority of Townscape bollards can be produced as fold-down versions to special quotation. However it isabsolutely essential that site conditions and use are taken into consideration when specifying a fold-down bollardproduct. In particular, attention must be paid to vehicle clearance levels if it is to be used in a car parkingapplication. When installing a fold down type bollard, the site must be level in all directions from the fixing point. It is not intended that vehicles make contact with any part of the product.Additionally, the weight of the bollard must be considered to ensure that personnel operating the unit can handleits weight. The bollard should be lowered carefully to the ground and not allowed to freefall.Regular maintenance of the fold down device is essential to ensure debris is not allowed to build up around thehinge assembly.

Gateshead RemovableLifting Device for Removable Bollards

1 2 3 4

The economy version is a simple sleeve which holds the bollard in position and is locked in place by a pin andpadlock. However when the bollard is removed, a section of the sleeve is left above ground since there is nocover for the sleeve therefore debris can easily enter the cavity. It is therefore recommended that the economyversion is used on sites where the bollard is removed for short, supervised periods.

A lifting device to facilitate the lifting of removable bollards is available. This device fits over the bollard andconnects with the base making it much easier for two people to handle the bollard when removing it from itshole.

Bollard Skirt

To enhance the visual appearance of a bollard fixed into theground, the optional skirt offers a neat solution. Having a plandimension of 200 x 200mm the skirt can easily be fitted intointerlocking blockwork or other paving.

To give increased security in areas that may be subject toram raiding, or to give extra protection for bollards whichhave to withstand repeated vehicle impact, Townscape canprovide extra strength bollards which are speciallyreinforced.

The reinforcing is manufactured from 6mm thick mild steelplate and formed into a cross shape which is then passedinside the bollard. This reinforcement extends beyond thestandard length of the bollard by a further 200mm. Thisstrengthening feature can be incorporated into almost allTownscape bollard designs.

The strengthening and lengthening of the bollard requiressubstantial speed and weight to effect a shear loading ordisplacement.

The purpose of the sacrificial method of fixingis to provide a protection barrier yetif necessary the bollard can ‘sacrifice’ itself ifaccess is required quickly and urgently, thesystem can also reduce the amount ofdamage that could be impacted to a vehiclestriking a permanently fixed bollard.

The sacrificial bollard is comprised of two parts- the bollard section and the shoe section.Special bolts are used to connect the bollardto the shoe and the design of the bolt is suchthat when the bollard is struck by a vehicle, thebolts will shear allowing the bollard to fall. The bollard is simply and quickly replaced withminimal cost.

Time and expense on site can be saved by having certainbollard designs concrete filled prior to delivery. Apart fromfilling time, the fixing of caps and painting to anacceptable standard are costly operations and as the useof concrete filled steel bollards is becoming morecommonplace, Townscape can now offer to provide thebollards ready filled.

Concrete Filling

Townscape has both CAD and extensivemanufacturing facilities to undertake production ofspecial design bollards and other street furniture itemsin most raw materials. For more details, pleasecontact Sales Office.

Page 25: Bollards Issue 01

Bollards with recess bands are ideal for highlighting in gold or othercolours to enhance a special colour scheme or corporate livery. Castiron bollards can be made to look most individual and prestigious bygold decoration.

In a more functional mode, reflective bands can be added tobollards to make them visible in vehicle headlights or poor weatherconditions.

Crests, lettering or other insignia can be fixed on to most bollards. There is a growing demand for personalisation of products either byCouncils, private enterprises and individuals. Townscape can meetmost requests by a photoetched outline on a thermal plastic plate. The outline of the crest, symbol or wording, is reproduced fromcamera-ready artwork and can incorporate quite fine detail. This isthen painted to any RAL colour and the detail highlighted in gold orpainted in other colours by hand.

Most bollards can be supplied with eye-bolts to facilitate chain orrope fixings. Special hook-bolts are available in lieu of eye-bolts.Plan positions should be indicated when ordering to ensure thatcorrect angles are achieved.

Concrete bollards remain popular as a raw material because theyweather naturally with the elements and have a lower maintenanceschedule than that required for steel or cast iron bollards. TheTownscape range of concrete bollards provides a choice of size, weight, design and finish to meet almost every situation. Mostcommonly, concrete bollards are used in urban landscape areas wherethere is a requirement for an open barrier.

24

Page 27: Bollards Issue 01

Minster

When choosing a bollard, the decision should be made relative toboth visual and physical deterrent aspects. Height should takeregard of driver visibility in the case of car parks, etc.

There is a wide price range for concrete bollards, however in thelower price category are the more basic designs where finishesare confined to plain concrete in grey or white. These generalpurpose bollards are favoured for situations where utility is theprime consideration. Our exposed aggregate range will appeal tothe more discerning specifier. These designs are of a moredetailed nature and give a greater possibility of blending thebollards into the overall landscape design, additionally, therugged surface finish is less easily vandalised.

The standard aggregate finish for concrete bollards is Natural Round(a brown and fawn riverbed aggregate) or Ballidon(a quarried aggregate of cream and mushroom colour). Any otheraggregate finishes can be produced to special order. If required, for sponsorship or advisory purposes, plaques can be mountedonto a bollard, again to special order.

Shown here are the well established Minster and Lindrick designs which remain best sellers and are provenperformers. The Penny is a dual function bollard which can also be used as seating or resting units as well asfulfilling a bollard role, furthermore, the unit can easily be turned into a cycle holder. The Quartet (Minor andMajor), Alton and Reigate offer a further choice of traditional styles.

Concrete has no flexural properties and under severe impact will fracture, this ability to fracture under impactmay have an advantage in circumstances of severe collision. The purpose of re-inforcement is mainly to holdthe larger fragments together when impacted and avoid injuries to pedestrians. Mild steel bar to BS4360:1990 isused throughout.

The Stele and Brute bollards form part of the Citizen rangeand have the thematic collar detail permanently integrated withthe cap and shaft units. The cap is cast to insert into the top ofthe shaft, secured by an adhesive bond which is even strongerthan the concrete mix.The collar is from asturdy aluminium sectionand cannot be removedor seriously damaged byvandalism.Although permanentlyintegrated, the collarsdo not constitute amaintenance problemas the highly abrasionresistant stoved polyestercoating of thealuminium ensures along life. The collar canbe coated to anyRAL colour.

The Bloc 560A bollard shown here in exposed aggregate finish can alsobe supplied with an etched surface for use as a sit-upon unit known asthe Sitz-Stone. Additionally its reduced below ground shank makes itsuitable for applications where a shallow depth of ground exists.

Tromso Stockholm

Also illustrated is the Bloc 760 bollard which can be supplied in plain grey or white but is represented here witha customer painted finish which can be achieved in Townscape’s factory or on site after installation.

The Cape Town bollard has a very stylish outline making it most suitable for prestigious applications. As anadded advantage, the height makes it possible to use the top as a resting place. Finish is exposed aggregate asstandard and the use of the Arctic range of aggregates particularly enhance this design.

The Tromso and Stockholm bollards are brand new designs and offer unique and interesting shapes to theextent where the products take on a sculptured visual appearance. These two designs are well suited to the useof a smaller size aggregate to define their detail. It may be worth noting that these bollards designs are offeredin timber - see section on timber bollards.

27

The concrete bollards shown in this section make up the Townscape range of exposed aggregate and plaindesigns, there is a further economy range offered and details of these seven economy bollards are shown in theTechnical Data section.

Reflectif

‘Reflectif’ is an applied finish of minute glass beads which give a white effect during the daytime but reflect thelight of headlights of vehicles in poor visibility and after dark. The finish is recommended where the visibility ofbollards at night is essential and it makes a significant contribution to road safety. Some designs can be suppliedwith ‘Reflectif’ caps or bands to make the bollard more visible to those with impaired vision.

Removable

Certain situations dictate that bollards need to be semi-permanently fixed, allowing temporary access foremergency vehicles etc. Most parallel sided bollards can be supplied in removable form with a reduced lengthshank in order to fit into a below-ground precast concrete socket. A plastics-lined lifting hole is provided in thebollard through which a bar may be passed for quick and easy removal.

Section Bollard

For the protection of corners of brickwork in areas of heavy traffic, the Linby bollard is available in three-quarter section as standard butother designs are to special order.

Bollards for CustomerPainting

If a particular colour scheme is required, smooth OPC or white concrete bollardscan be painted for an unusual finish. This work is normally done on site afterinstallation. Opposite is a typicalexample using the Windsor bollard.

Traffic Speed Regulator

More commonly known as ‘Sleeping Policeman’these precast concrete units have the advantageof being able to be re-sited at different locations.Overall size 500 x 500 x 130mm. Normally it isrecommended that the units are set into the groundsome 100mm to prevent movement.

Variwall

Variwall is a modular walling system unique in its own versatility. The prefabricated retaining wall provides a high degree of structuralstrength combined with a striking visual appearance.

The system comprises a number of precast concrete, vertical, cylindrical units each containing a small groove into which theadjoining unit fits precisely thereby creating an interlock. Thisinterlocking combined with the units firmly bedded into a concretefooting provides great strength throughout the entire length.

The units available allow the wall to be constructed in a varietyof height/width ratios giving a combination of pleasing visualappearance. In addition, the circular section allows the wall to becurved to any profile. Similarly the wall may be stepped up or downto suit requirements.

A concealed drainage groove channels moisture down to the base ofthe wall thus eliminating the need for unsightly weep holes.

Two sizes of Variwall are available: Small with an overall height of 900mm, aneffective module size of 225mm and therefore 4.44 modules per metre run: Largewith an overall height of 1200mm, an effective module size of 320mm andtherefore 3.12 modules per metre run.

This utility concrete element, Terrabloc is available in a choice of exposedaggregate or simulated brick pattern face. A left and right mitred unitenables external 90 degree angles to be achieved, making possible raisedflower beds or other features. The base takes up a minimum of ground orraised surface area. Adequate drainage channels are incorporatedinto side joints. A larger size unit is also available for engineeringapplications, known as the Terrabloc Major.

The Eco range represents Townscape’s contribution to the conservation of natural resourcesand care of the environment. Made from a variety of waste plastics, the basic material of the products has asecondary conservation role by contributing to the re-use of the materials that go into the original manufactureof plastics. The main ingredients are low and high density polyolefins which combine to give malleability, flexibility and resistance to impact.

The particular material formulation chosen for these designs has a slightly rustic surface appropriate to theexterior environment which is complemented by the mild steel accessories finished in Townscape’s Super-plusfinishing process. The Super-plus treatment involves extensive pre-treatment to remove contaminates and millscale followed by zinc plating prior to the electrostatic deposition of the polyester powder coat which is ovencured at 200 degree C.

Offered in this range are the Mace, Furze and Holm bollards, which are illustrated above, one circular and twosquare designs. The larger square design can easily be modified to become an effective post and rail unit.

Timber Bollards

It is sometimes assumed that timber bollards are only suitable for woodland areas. However, these bollards havebeen enormously successful in high-density urban areas. One advantage is that timber weathersnaturally and of course requires little maintenance once installed.

The type of timber used for these bollards is generally Balau, Purple Heart or Green Heart from either Malaysia orIndonesia. All of these timbers have been selected for their quality but also they are sourced from managedforests.

It must however be stated that timber is rarely totally perfect in appearance . Knotting, graining and splitting(shakes) are all apparent in timber and although every effort is taken to select timber sections of superior qualityit is inevitable that there will be some visual imperfections. Additionally in prolonged dry climateconditions, shakes will tend to worsen as the timber dries out, but this does not impair the soundness of theproduct.

All timber bollards are now produced in-house at Townscape. This machine is the latest model hydraulic copylathe, and can manufacture all bollard shapes up to 270mm diameter and up to 1900mm in length. It can alsoproduce all posts, columns and spindles to special order.

The Nordic hardwood bollards are a range of nine distinctly different profiles designed to suit a variety ofsituations and customer preference.

The formal cohesion and utility of the designsis to be further extended by the introductionof the Beachcomber Range where thesurface of the hardwood is artificiallyweathered, introducing a romantic aestheticdimension to the products by expressing thetexture and rhythmic characteristics of thegrain.

All hardwood products are availableuntreated or with a protective coating whichenhances the colour of the grain. Thedesigns, Tromso and Turku can be suppliedwith coated 8mm mild steel capping platesto protect the end-grain and finished in arange of colours to contrast or tone with thehardwood.

These bollards are very versatile in design and can be adapted to form cycle parking units, post and rail fencingand barrier panels. Because of the method of manufacture, these designs can quite easily be produced in castiron or concrete and in fact, the Stockholm and Tromso are already offered in concrete either as an exposedaggregate or plain finish.

STANDARD COLOURS

A standard range of 18 RAL colours is available as illustrated here, black and white are also offered as standardcolours. Other RAL colours can be supplied subject to special quotation.

It should be noted that all manmade or natural materials will lose some of their original qualities over a period oftime due to the effects of exposure to the sun or ultra-violet rays (UV). The pigment and paint system researchedand developed by Townscape are to the highest specification and will give exceptional retention of originalcolour for many years. The resins are UV stable and the pigments are UV fast. Typical results for intensive testing

Materials And Finishing

All steel parts conform to BS4360 43A or 43C.During their finishing process, steel products will beshotblasted to SA 2.5/3.0 or acid cleaned prior to electrozinc plating. This process will provide an even deposit ofzinc and zinc alloy over the whole surface of the material. The product is then chrome passivated and rinsed, thisimproves the surface finish and ensures maximum chemicaladhesion of subsequent polyester finishes. Plating is appliedto a minimum thickness of 15 microns. The sacrificial andsealing action of the zinc prevents any rust staining if severelydamaged.

Cast iron products undergo two fettling and two shotblasting processes to remove all surface imperfections andsurface contamination. A two pack epoxy grey primer is then applied with d.f.t. of 50/75 microns. This paintconforms to BS 5493 and BS4652 Type 3. It will withstand exterior exposure for three years and will not breakdown at 2000 hours salt spray testing.

Steel

Cast Iron

All timbers are machined from quality hardwood originating from carefully husbanded forests of Africa andMalaysia. The timber is exceptionally smooth grained, however, all hardwoods are susceptible to splits andshakes appearing over the course of time. All timber components are coated with high quality wood treatmentbefore assembly and despatch.

Paint Thickness Testing

Shot-blasting

Packaging

Following their priming process, steel and cast iron products are polyesterpowder coated by electrostatic process which ensures complete coverage. The powder will give a d.f.t. of 75 microns. The polyester powder has beenthoroughly tested under controlled conditions. Samples tested for resistanceto salt spray, humidity and water soak at 40 degrees centigrade showed nobreakdown and were resistant to most acids, alkalis and oils. Exterior exposuretests to BS 3900 Part 2 showed minimal loss of gloss and colour after 2000hours. Similar results were obtained with a 12 month Florida exposure(45 degree angle).

All Townscape products require a minimum of maintenance and aftercare.A regular inspection to verify ground fixings and inspection of the finishedcoatings of both metal and timber components is essential. Damage topaintwork can be remedied by application of a suitable primer and topcoatwith compatible products. It should also be noted that after outdoor exposure, all treated timbers canfade through the action of sunlight, rain and stain migration. To restoretimber components to their original condition and maintain the level of woodpreservation, a regular maintenance programme must be established.
