EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S REPORT

The BCLT Board Welcomes New Board Member Corey MillerBy Kim Kolpin, Executive Director

Our Endowment for the Future Continues to Grow!!

The Land Trust’s newest board member, Corey Miller, was born and raised in Huntington Beach, graduating from Marina High School in 2002. For five summers, Corey worked as a Recurrent Beach Lifeguard for the City of Huntington Beach. He received a Bachelors of Science in Political Science from Northeastern Uni-versity and his Juris Doctor from the University of California Hast-ings College of the Law. Currently, Corey is an associate at the law firm of Miller Miller Menthe, LLP, in Newport Beach. He special-izes in Business Litigation and Transactional Law, providing legal guidance regarding the structur-ing and governance of business entities.

“I am honored to be a Member of the Board of the Bolsa Chica Land Trust,” Corie wrote. “Liv-ing in Huntington Beach almost my entire life, I can attest to the importance of the Bolsa Chica Wetlands, not only for its inte-gral place in nature, but as as an important link to the past of our community. I am excited to play my part in the fight to protect the Bolsa Chica Wetlands for future generations to enjoy.”

We are pleased to welcome Corey to the Board.

The future of the Land Trust’s projects and programs continues to get brighter as donations to our Endowment are received. A huge “Thank You” for recent contributions by the following members:

Gertrud Bennett Karl and Maryann Boehmke (in Memory of J. Armstrong) Michael Horn Lois Miller Fred Tanaka Burton and Doris Willis

To donate to our Endowment for the Future, please use the remittance envelope in this newsletter, contribute online at www.BolsaChicaLandTrust.org or call our Executive Director, Kim Kolpin at (714) 846-1001. The BCLT Endowment is managed by the Orange County Community Foundation.

Tee Shirt Contest Winners AnnouncedThe Bolsa Chica Land Trust is pleased to announce the winners of our Tee Shirt contest! We were thrilled to receive many wonderful designs, and have chosen this heart design by Jan McKinnon for the adult tee shirts and this wonderful egret drawing by Alessandra Ansurez for the kids’ tee shirts.

Upon being notified of her win-ning design, Jan wrote to us “One of the best places in the world to live is near the Bolsa Chica Wet-lands. As a retired art teacher, I was really excited that the Bolsa Chica Land Trust reached out to the community for their T-shirt design. We all have many special things we like about the Wetlands and my hope was to show a lot of them in the design, as well as use the design as a learning experi-ence for what the Wetlands have to offer. The Wetlands hold a very special place in the hearts of all that have visited and have been touched by its magic.” We are so thankful for Jan’s creative vision which gracefully captures so much of what BCLT is about.

Alessandra participated in our Miracles of the Marsh educational program this spring with her third grade classmates from Abbott Elementary School in Lynwood. After her tour Alessandra wrote, “Thank you for inviting us to the Bolsa Chica wetlands! I saw and learned about many interest-ing birds like the Bufflehead, the Snowy Egret, the Great Blue Heron, the long-billed Curlew, the Cali-fornia Gull, Scaup and the Ruddy Duck.” A special Thank You to Ron Krasnitz for his help with the children’s design.

We are so excited to share these wonderful images with you! They will be available on tee shirts and merchandise soon. Please

check our website for availability and ordering at www.BolsaChi-caLandTrust.org. Email Erin at [email protected] and join our email list to be notified as soon as the shirts are available.

4 Bolsa Chica Land Trust • FALL 2015

Duck, Duck, Goose!Autumn is a beautiful time at Bolsa Chica when our migrant ducks and geese come flying in. As evening falls earlier, and hopefully there is a chill and mist in the air, dozens of species of ducks settle in for the winter. The Gadwall, Wigeon, Mallard, Blue-winged Teal, Cinnamon Teal, Northern Shoveler, Northern Pintail, Green-winged Teal, Redhead, Scaup, Surf Scoter, Bufflehead, Red-breasted Merganser, and Ruddy Duck are the most common duck species at Bolsa Chica.

Canada Geese travel thousands of miles in their iconic V formation to escape the snowy north to putter on the Mesa. And until recently,

Brant Geese were not often seen at Bolsa Chica, but when the Tidal Basin was opened and Eel Grass was successfully planted in the water, Brants by the hundreds began to spend their winters at Bolsa Chica. They now arrive in No-vember and stay with us through May, a won-derful example of the success of the full tidal wetland restoration. We hope you can escape the rigor of your day to spend a little time out with the ducks and geese at Bolsa Chica. A Happy Fall to all!

*Special thanks to Marinka Horack for her knowledge of all things ducks.

Holiday MagicAs you gear up for holiday shopping, here is a way you can also give a lit-tle to Bolsa Chica. The Bolsa Chica Land Trust is one of the charities listed with AmazonSmile. So rather than shopping on plain old Amazon, shop on AmazonSmile. It’s the same site, but with some holiday magic thrown in, because Amazon will au-tomatically donate 0.5% of your pur-chases to the charity of your choice. It costs you (and the charitable organizations) nothing, and it’s just like shopping on Amazon normally, but you get to do a world of good.

The only real catch is you have to start your shopping at smile.amazon.com (which means you have to update your bookmark if you want to do this), and shopping from the Amazon apps, Kindle, or through affiliate links won’t count.

So this year, think of the Land Trust when you are ordering that Star Wars toy on-line at 3 a.m. and go to AmazonSmile! Happy Holidays.

FUN PHOTO CAPTION CONTEST “Who does her hair?” is the title of this photo by Lori Norman, but what do you think these birds are saying?

The winning caption will be published in our next news-letter. The winner will re-ceive a newly designed Land Trust tee shirt and mug.

Please send entries to the Bolsa Chica Land Trust office by mail (BCLT 5200 Warner Avenue, Suite 108, Hunting-ton Beach, CA 92649) or by e-mail ([email protected]) with the subject line “Caption Contest” by December 10th.

6 Bolsa Chica Land Trust • FALL 2015

This summer we were busy developing a new program. It is called Adopt-a-plot and is designed for school groups, church groups, scout troops and everything in between. Each participating group will get a plot on the Mesa which they will be responsible for clearing, planting, watering, weeding, and monitoring under our supervision. It’s basi-cally a smaller version of what the Stewards and I do on the areas where we work. The groups will be guided and mentored in habitat restoration techniques and methods by knowledgeable Stewards throughout the whole process. We ask each group to dedi-cate a year to their plot and have people come once a month during a regular Stewards’ work day.

Stewards Start a New ProgramBy Erin Chin, Stewards Coordinator

BOLSA CHICA STEWARDS

Here are 10 reasons to adopt a plot:

1. Team building, leadership skills, building relationships 2. See how Bolsa Chica changes with the seasons 3 Learn the plants and animals that call Bolsa Chica home 4. Socialize with your group and all volunteers and Stewards 5. You can name your plot 6. More responsibility and more hands-on training 7. We offer a certificate/letter of recommendation at the end of the year 8. Each group will receive recognition on our website 9. Watch your plot go from weedy invasive plants to native grasses and sage scrub habitat10. And most important: IT’S FUN, feels great to give back and enjoy nature!

Ready to roll up your sleeves, grab a shovel and restore the Mesa?!

You can contact me for more information at [email protected] or call at 714-846-1001.

Thank You to our Corporate SupportersThe Bolsa Chica Land Trust is grateful for significant financial support of our programs and projects from Southern California Edison/Edison International and the Alcoa Foundation/Alcoa Fasten-ing Systems & Rings. BCLT recently has been the recipient of a $10,000 grant from SCE which will help fund the next year of our Miracles of the Marsh program, and a $15,000 grant from the Alcoa Foundation which will help fund our Stewards habitat restoration project for the next year.

What makes these grants even more special to us is that volunteers from both corporations regularly join us on our Stewards work days and both corporations include us in their philanthropy events and outreach programs. These relation-ships and friendships further our collec-tive emphasis on involving the community in our local environment.

The Land Trust thanks both Southern California Edison and Alcoa, and we will see you on the Mesa!
