20 easy ways toconserve water

Every living thing on the planet requires water to survive.Without water, life as we know it would quickly perish.Despite the importance of water, many do not think ahead towhat would happen if water supplies dwindled. To avoid sucha fate, it's best to begin conserving water whenever possible.

Though estimates vary, most people use between 80 to 100gallons of water each day. So many daily necessities requirewater use. By making a few changes here and there, it's possi-ble to considerably reduce the amount of water we waste eachday.

1. When hand-washing dishes, don't let the tap run. Fill upthe sink and wash them that way then rinse afterward.

2. Wash clothing only when the entire machine is full.3. Adjust sprinklers so that only the lawn and shrubbery are

watered - not the driveway or sidewalks. Or invest in a driphose that waters the roots only and saves water.

4. Invest in rain barrels that can collect water from down-spouts on the home.

5. Water in early morning and early evening to avoid evap-oration from the hot sun.

6. Spread a layer of mulch in planting beds and aroundtrees to keep roots moist.

7. Check the home indoors and outdoors for any leaks.8. Shorten showers by a minute or two. This can save up to

150 gallons of water per person, per month.9. A taller lawn shades roots and reduces the need to water

the grass more frequently.10. Use one glass or bowl all day for food and drink to

reduce the number of items that need to be washed.11. Use a water-efficient showerhead to reduce water con-

sumption by 75 percent.12. If you haven't already done so, switch all toilets to low-

flow toilets.13. Don't wash the car in the driveway. Visit a commercial

car wash that uses recycled water.14. Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth.15. Put water-saving aerators on all faucets in the home.16. Avoid water recreation toys that require a constant flow

of water.17. Use the water conservation cycle on a dishwasher.18. Bathe young children together. Bathe a small child in

the kitchen sink to avoid having to fill up an entire bath tub.19. Report broken pipes or hydrants quickly.20. Use leftover water from pet bowls to water plants

instead of tossing it down the drain.

Taking the mystery out of credit scores

How to handle student loan debt after college

By David UffingtonFICO, short for Fair Isaac Corporation, was

founded in 1956 by a mathematician and an engineerwho were interested in the analysis of numbers -including credit scores. Their work gave creditors ameans of predicting which customers are more orless likely to default on loans. Your score can pre-determine how you're treated by creditors:

1. A high credit scores equates to a lower antici-pated rate of default.

2. Creditors raise or lower the interest rates theyoffer you based on your likely risk of default.

3. The higher your credit score, the better the dealyou'll get on interest and the more money you'relikely to save over time.

The front screen of the MyFico.com website givesa perfect example of potential savings: "A 100-pointdifference in your FICO score could mean over$40,000 extra in interest payments over the life of a30-year mortgage on a $300,000 home loan."

FICO scores range from 300 to 850 and are basedon payment history, length of credit history, newcredit you might open, amount of established creditand the types of credit. A mix of credit types - per-haps vehicle, mortgage, credit card - will yield a bet-

ter score than all credit cards or vehicle only. With all the lender emphasis on credit worthiness,

a simple late payment can damage your credit score. The later it is, the more damage is done.

Here's an additional credit fact: Unfair though itis, the higher your credit score, the bigger the "ding"to your credit if you do miss payments. Here is acomparison of late payment and bankruptcy at twolevels of credit score and the length of time for thescore to rise again:

Thirty days late: Credit score of 680 might be cutto 600-620, but can rise again in nine months. Ascore of 780 might be cut to 670-690, and it couldtake three years for the score to rise again.

Bankruptcy: Credit score of 680 might be cut to530-550, and could take five years to rise again. Ascore of 780 might be cut to 540-560, and it couldtake seven to 10 years for the score to rise again.

For more information on keeping your creditscore healthy, visit MyFico.com.

David Uffington regrets that he cannot personallyanswer reader questions, but will incorporate them into hiscolumn whenever possible. Write to him in care of KingFeatures Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL32853-6475, or send e-mail to [email protected].

Today's college graduates face numerous chal-lenges. With the global economy still struggling, thejob market for recent graduates is less than ideal.Competition for jobs is also heated, as high rates ofunemployment have created a job market in whichout-of-work yet experienced professionals are routine-ly competing over entry-level jobs with recent gradu-ates, many of whom have little or no experience intheir chosen fields.

But the difficult job market is only part of the trou-bles recent graduates must face. Mounting debt is amajor issue for many college grads. In the UnitedStates, the Class of 2011 earned the distinction ofbeing the most indebted graduating class in the coun-try's history.

Those facing loan repayment while struggling tofind a job should consider the following tips.

•Don't delay requests for help. Procrastination isn'ta good approach to dealing with debt, whether thatdebt is from student loans, credit cards or personalloans. Recent graduates who cannot find work or who

were laid off should contact their lenders right awayand inquire about lowering or postponing monthlypayments. It's never good to miss a payment, whichwill negatively impact an individual's credit rating andis almost certain to draw a financial penalty. If troubleis on the horizon, consult the lender as early as possi-ble.

•Don't ignore it. Simply ignoring a student loanand not repaying it is not a good approach. The loanwill still be there, and even bankruptcy court is notlikely to discharge a student loan. In other words, indi-viduals are going to have to repay their student loans,so ignoring them is not going to work.

•Don't panic. The current economy could seemdaunting to recent graduates. Some may wonder ifthey will ever find work in their fields or if they willever be able to repay their loans. But panicking won'thelp. Lenders will be willing to work with borrowerswho are honest and straightforward. Avoiding lendersand missing payments will only make the situationworse

Companies today sometimes seem togo too far in advertising their products, but consider Richard Chesebrough, whoinvented the petroleum jelly Vaseline in1872. In order to market his new creationas a salve for cuts and burns, he traveledaround New York state demonstrating theefficacy of the product by burning his skinwith acid, then applying Vaseline to theinjury. A display of his past burns that hadbeen healed with Vaseline would, in theo-ry, convince people to buy the product.

Naturally sweet herb used to sweeten drinksBy Angela Shelf Medearis

My sister, Marcia, loves to garden. She generous-ly shares her plants with me. Recently, she gave me astevia plant as a gift. I use the leaves of this naturallysweet herb to sweeten a variety of drinks. It's alsoavailable commercially in a granular form like sugar.

Stevia is a not-so-new sweetener that recentlymade its way into the U.S. market. Although Steviahas been sold in the U.S. for many years as a dietarysupplement, it was not regulated by the Food andDrug Administration. Now that the FDA has declaredits active ingredient - rebaudioside A - as "generallyaccepted as safe," it is showing up in products liketabletop sweetener packets. PureVia (from PepsiCoand a subsidiary of Merisant, Whole EarthSweeteners) and Truvia (from Coca-Cola and

Cargill), along with some flavored waters and lower-calorie soda and fruit drinks, now contain stevia.

Leaves from the stevia plant are steeped in waterand then processed into crystalline form. These crys-tals create a sweet taste in the mouth, but are calorie-free when digested. As a sweetener, stevia's extract is250 to 300 times sweeter than sugar. This meansonly a very tiny amount is needed to add sweetnessto a food or beverage.

As with any sweetener, there are challenges tousing stevia in food products. Stevia is naturally bit-ter, but tastes sweet after some delay. Although it istemperature and acid stable, the natural bitternessand intense sweetness are challenges the food indus-try will have to overcome. Consumers will need totaste stevia and decide for themselves how well they

like it.Another possible challenge is

the price. Currently, it is expen-sive to use stevia or its activeingredient in foods. Products con-taining this naturally derivedsweetener may be out of manyconsumers' price range.

Like other sugar substitutes, consumers need to watch for anywarnings or concerns with stevia. It has been classified as safe, but it doesn't hurt to try it out slowly to see what effect it has onindividual taste and digestion.

This recipe for Fruit Sorbet uses stevia instead of sugar tosweeten the dessert.

Fruit SorbetYou'll need an ice cream machine for this delicious recipe.

You can use any fruit juice blend concentrate of your choiceinstead of raspberry. This recipe also works well if you substi-tute one (12.3 ounce) box of silken tofu for the yogurt, alongwith 1 cup of milk or soymilk.

2 cups plain low-fat yogurt1/4 cup milk 1/2 cup unsweetened raspberry juice blend concentrate,

thawed1 tablespoon orange juice concentrate1 teaspoon vanilla extract3/4 teaspoon stevia sugar substitute1 banana (optional)

Blend all ingredients together in a blender until smooth. Pourinto the container of an ice-cream machine, and process accord-ing to directions. Makes 4 servings.

Save money with couponsA recent addition to the television line-

up called "Extreme Couponing" hasspurred greater interest in the use ofcoupons. Although many shoppers on theshow end up walking away with wagon-fuls of items for virtually nil to add to theirstockpiles of supplies, chances are mostcasual coupon users are looking for waysto save without going overboard.

Coupons in newspapers (including theBonanza), online and through in-store dis-count programs are essentially free moneyfor the taking. It's never been easier forshoppers to find deals on the products theycommonly use through the clipping ofcoupons. But it's not just about clippingand saving. With a few coupon pointers, shoppers can save even more, and possiblywalk away with a few items free of charge.

•The first way to get started is to figureout if your family is brand-specific or canmanage with a variety of different brands.Being more flexible on brands widens theavailability of coupons - and the deals.

•Coupons are available online. SmartSource, Red Plum, Catalina, among othersoffer printable coupons right from theirWeb sites. It may be necessary to down-load a small application that will properlyconfigure and print barcode coupons to apersonal printer.

•Shop at a store that offers coupon dou-bling. Many stores will double coupons upto $.99. That means a $.50 coupon willdouble up to $1.00. If the item being pur-chased is $1.00, that item is then free.

•Use the available resources to get evenmore savings by purchasing items that areon sale in stores and also have an availablecoupon. There are Web sites, such asCouponDivas.com and CouponMom.com,that will match up coupons offered for theweek with sales being run in particularstores or states.

•Realize that not all the best sales occurat grocery stores. Sometimes area pharma-cies offer deals on items at prices lowerthan the supermarket. Check circulars for

the pharmacy on items needed before pur-chasing them with the rest of your foodshopping.

•While many coupons and stores limitpurchases to one coupon per item, thereare exceptions. If multiple coupons can beused, then there is a greater chance to get aparticular purchase for no cost.

•There are services that will clipcoupons and mail them to subscribers for asmall fee. Those interested in being moreaggressive with couponing can sign up.There are also services that can automati-cally load coupon discounts right ontoshopper loyalty cards. The discount creditswill come off at the register when the cardis swiped.

•It is important to have the discountloyalty card at stores. Although it can openyou up to promotional e-mails and somejunk snail mail, you won't get in-store pro-motions without the card.

•Remember, coupons are only good onthe items frequently bought and used.Don't purchase an item simply becauseyou have a coupon for it, particularly ifyou won't use or like that item. That addsup to wasted money.

•Figure out a coupon organizationalsystem that works for you. Coupons areonly good if they are with you when youenter the store. Also, don't miss out ondeals due to an expired coupon. Routinelyreview the coupons you have to ensurediscounted items are purchased before thecoupons expire.

•Some manufacturers will e-mail ormail coupons simply by signing up as acustomer on their Web site. Others will doso if you fill out a short survey. "Liking"abrand on Facebook is another way to getcoupon deals.

Couponing is one way to save money atstores. It's relatively free, and with theabundance of resources available, it'sbecome even easier to use coupons onmany levels.

Anyone who has ever been far from home for a longperiod of time, whether for work, school or some otherreason, can attest to how great they feel upon receivinga care package in the mail. There's nothing better thangetting a box of goodies from someone back home. Now imagine how great it must be for a soldier sta-tioned thousands of miles away in a country unlike theirown to receive such a package. What a good feelingthey must get when they open a box filled with theirfavorite things from home. Want to make a soldier'sday? Send them a care package.

Boxing up some items and sending them to any sol-dier is not advised. Restrictions are now in place on thattype of giving. It is best to have the name of a soldier, whether through a family you know or an organizationthat will connect you with the name of soldier whoneeds a care package.

Depending upon your budget and time, you mayassemble the care package yourself or arrange for some-one else to do it. There are many organizations that put

together and send care packages to soldiers. You maypurchase a package directly or assist in the effort with adonation of goods, money or time.

Should you decide to assemble the package yourself, there are many items you can send. Before you go shop-ping, ask the family or the organization from which yougot the soldier's name for their recommendations. Youmight discover that the soldier has particular needs orpreferences. Should you receive no recommendations, here is a brief list of items many experts suggest:

•Baby wipes•Batteries•Energy bars or drink mixes•Food flavorings, like seasoning salt and hot sauce•Gum•Hard candy•Hygiene products, like toothbrushes, toothpaste,

razors and eye drops•Plastic storage bags•Prepaid phone cards•Snacks that will not melt, like beef jerky, nuts or

sunflower seeds

If you have been corre-sponding with the sol-dier for a while, youmay have anadvantage in theselections youmake for the carepackage. If youdon't know thesoldier at all, don't worry about it.Bartering is not uncommon among service-men and women. They will appreciate whatever yousend.

The great thing about care packages is you can sendthem as often as you like. If you correspond with thesoldier regularly, you may send them care packages reg-ularly. If you don't, you may contact an organizationspecializing in care packages for soldiers and help outas much as you can when you can. Every little bit helpsand whatever you do will be appreciated and show yoursupport for the U.S. troops.

Make cheap, sweet cleaning glovesBy Donna Erickson

It's easy and fun to dress up drab latexrubber gloves with perky cuffs. Add rick-rack, bows or sparkling brooches forextra bling, and your household cleaningchores won't seem so humdrum. Yourkids can help with the fabric choice, measuring and cutting.

Once you get going, make severalpairs. They're fun to tuck in a basket ofitems for a shower or housewarming giftfor a new family on the block. A whimsi-cal homemade gift from you and yourkids!

Here's the stuff you'll need:

•One pair of rubber gloves with cuffsin the quality and color you prefer, avail-able at grocery and discount stores for adollar or two.

•1/4 yard of oilcloth or water-resistantstiff fabric that is at least 36 inches wide.I found big-polka-dot fabric at IKEA. Iwanted to use blue and red yardage forsummer tablecloths, so I added extra fab-ric for the gloves.

•Measuring tape, marker, scissors andstraight pins

•Sewing machine and thread.•A glue-gun to attach decorative add-

ons such as ribbon, bows, rickrack andbuttons if you wish. Or pin on a brooch. You also may decide to cut the edgeswith pinking shears.

Here's the fun:

Directions for one glove: 1. Trim off the edge of the glove and

make the cuff shorter for a comfortablefit.

2. Cut fabric 4-inches wide by at least

18-inches long. If you prefer fuller ruf-fles, make it longer.

3. Let your child mark 2-inch intervalsalong the edge and then make small knifepleats at each mark. Pin and sew thepleats in place with stitches running closeto the edge. Remove pins. Note: Once Igot the hang of it, I created the pleats oneby one as I sewed.

4. Bring the 4-inch edges of the fabricright sides together, pin and sew a 1/4-inch seam to create a circular, pleatedfabric ready to attach to the glove.

5. Ease the pleated cuff wrong side outover the right side of the glove and pin inplace.

(I placed the 4-inch-long seam abovethe thumb side of the glove.) If the pleat-ed cuff is too large, add another pleat.Remove pins as you sew 1/2-inch fromthe edge.

Turn cuff over the seam and fluff thepleats. Repeat with second glove.

For extra pizzazz, use your imagina-tion and items in your craft box to deco-rate the gloves with add-ons. A glue gunworks quickly.
