Senior discountsare well earnedBy Matilda Charles

The holiday season can be quiet forsome of us. While it's a great time to sitback and enjoy the books we received andsome of the holiday shows on television,we also need to get out! It only takes a lit-tle planning to join up with friends toenjoy some meals out. The bonus is thatmany restaurants give a senior discount.

Here's a list of a few places you'll finddiscounts, broken down by age. Most givea 10 percent discount or offer a free drink.

For those age 55 and above:Chick-Fil-A, Dunkin Donuts, Jack in

the Box (20 percent off), Arby's, DairyQueen, Popeye's, Fuddruckers, CountryKitchen, Wendy's, Denny's (usually 10percent off, but certain days and times it's20 percent), IHOP, Chili's.

For those age 60 and above:Sizzler, Bob's Big Boy, Golden Corral,

Applebees (15 percent discount), RoyRogers, Burger King, Sonic, Friendly's,Ben and Jerrys.

Be sure to call in advance to make surethere aren't any restrictions, such as daysof the week or times of the day. Not alllocations offer a discount. For those in the55-plus category, call to be sure theyhaven't increased the age to 60.

Don't forget AARP if you're looking fora discount. The website (www.aarp.org)has a list that changes. Click MemberBenefits, then Discounts.

Many of us don't want to ask for a dis-count in restaurants or anywhere else --but we should! We've earned it! Here's achallenge for you for 2012: Ask for yoursenior discount everywhere you go, andkeep track of how much you save throughthe year. You might be pleasantly sur-prised. Carry your AARP card at all times!

Matilda Charles regrets that she cannotpersonally answer reader questions, but willincorporate them into her column wheneverpossible. Send e-mail to [email protected].

Ways to create new holiday traditionsMuch of what makes the holiday sea-

son so special is the traditions that peoplehold dear. While families have traditionsthat stretch back decades, there is plentyof opportunity to embrace new means ofcelebration to breathe new life intoChristmas, Chanukkah or the season'sother holidays.

Chances are you're already hangingstockings or going caroling this year. Youcan add some of these and modify as theyfit for your family.

Feed the wildlife. During the cold daysof winter, birds and small animals thatdon't hibernate may find it difficult to for-age for food. By trimming an outdoor pinetree in edible snacks you'll have a beauti-ful tree and one that benefits the wildlifeas well. String peanuts and other nuts forthe squirrels. Make little ornaments out ofsuet and string for the birds. Berries andcorn can be enjoyed by all. Be sure tochoose a tree that is far enough away fromthe home, so you don't have too manyscavengers hunting and pecking aroundthe house.

Create a photo Advent calendar.

Make your own Advent calendar that hassmall doors that open up to photos of dif-ferent family members. Or use a collectionof children's pictures that showcase howthey've changed as they've grown older.

"Adopt" a child for holiday gifts.

Each year you can bring a smile to a childin need by purchasing a present for anunderprivileged kid. Some post officessponsor "Letters from Santa" events whereparticipants can respond to one of thethousands of letters mailed to The NorthPole. Or work with a local charity thatorganizes events to bring gifts to childrenin hospitals or in foster care.

Holiday story countdown. Every nightin December watch a movie or read astory that tells an uplifting holiday tale.Use this as a method of counting downuntil Christmas. On the night prior, read-ing "'Twas the Night Before Christmas"should suffice.

Remember someone who has passed

on. The holiday season is one made beau-tiful by lit candles and twinkling lights.Remember a loved one or a friend whohas passed away by lighting a remem-

brance candle in his or her honor. It's away this person can still be part of the fes-tivities.

Have a holiday sing-a-long. Sure itmay be tradition to go around the neigh-borhood singing carols, but it's just as funindoors. Have a singing party whereguests are given lyrics to popular tunesthey can sing around the piano or karaokemachine.

Bring some joy to a public servant.

Police officers, firefighters, military per-sonnel ... many of these workers do notget off for the holidays. There are a certainnumber of public servants who mustremain on call in the event of an emer-gency. Treat these people to somethingenjoyable when they may be missing theirown festivities. Cook or cater a meal for afire house, deliver cookies to the policestation or put together care packages forpeople living on a military base.

Banish the holiday blues. When theholidays are set to go for another year, many people find they become a littledown. After all, a home that was oncefilled with merry trinkets may now go

back to the bare essentials. Create a tradi-tion where everyone in the family receivesone more gift - a personalized ornamentthat can be packed away for use next year- that's given in January before the decora-tions are packed away. It's another oppor-tunity to open a present, and it symbolizeslooking forward to the joy of next year.

Holiday traditions are fun. Thisyear it may be time to beginsome new ones to add evenmore enjoyment.

By Tresa Erickson

Each year as Christmas approaches, children all overthe world sit down to pen a letter to Santa. Some tellSanta how good they have been and how much they arelooking forward to his visit. Others wish Santa well andremind him what they want for Christmas. When fin-ished, the children slip their letter into an envelope, seal it, address it to the North Pole and slide it into themailbox. Surprisingly, many receive an answer to theirletter, thanks to postal workers and other volunteersaround the world.

Writing a letter to Santa has long been a tradition.Children in Great Britain used to burn their letters inthe hopes the wind would transport them to the NorthPole. Today, that is no longer the case. Children look to

their post office to help them get their letters to Santa.According to estimates, post offices around the worldreceive approximately a hundred Santa letters a dayduring the summer and many times that during the holi-day season. In tough economic times, post officesreceive more than double the usual amount of letters.

While postal workers could let the letters sit, that isnot an option for many. In 1912, U.S. Post ServicePostmaster General Frank Hitchcock began permittingpostal workers in New York City to respond to the let-ters. This was the start of what would become knownas Operation Santa Claus, a program that operates inmany post offices around the country. Hundreds ofpostal workers and volunteers take time out to answerletters. At the Alaskan North Pole, for example, over amillion letters have been sent out.

Other nations have their own version of OperationSanta Claus, including Canada, Finland, France andGermany. France has one of the largest programs, hir-ing over 50 people just to answer letters to Pere Noel. For those who don't live in an area with such a programbut have Internet access, several websites are availablethat accept and respond to letters to Santa by e-mail.

Parties interested in volunteering to answer letters toSanta should check with their local post office first andsee if such a program is available. Due to security rea-sons and mailing costs, post offices will no longer mailor fax letters to volunteers. Volunteers must pick themup in person. If there is no program, perhaps one couldbe started. What child wouldn't appreciate a responsefrom Santa?

History of the crossword puzzleThe crossword puzzle is a beloved yet

relatively new component of popular cul-ture. Crossword puzzles have evolvedinto popular pastimes, educational toolsfor children and methods of keeping thebrain sharp.

Arthur Wynne, an English journalistwho emigrated to the United States in theearly 20th century, is credited with thecreation of the first crossword puzzle. Heis the first modern-day cruciverbalist, orcrossword creator. Wynne wrote the puz-zle for an American newspaper called theNew York World. It was published onSunday, December 21, 1913. The firstcrossword was actually called a "word-cross" and was diamond shaped. The name of the puzzlewas later switchedto "cross-word" and thencrossword.

Wynne said hebased his cross-word puzzle on agame that was playedin ancient Pompeii. Itwas called "magicsquares" when translatedfrom Latin. Although thecrossword puzzle became afrequent inclusion innewsprint, it wasn't until 1924when publisher Simon & Schusterpublished the first collection of cross-words in book form that the crosswordbecame available in a more widespreadmanner.

Crossword puzzles are governed by aseries of rules. There are different typesof grids for these puzzles depending onorigin. For example, crosswords oftenfollow an American style, a British style,a Japanese style, and a Swedish style. Each of these styles has their own seriesof rules. These rules pertain to the num-ber of cells and how many are shaded orwhite. A white cell that is part of twoentries, meaning part of an Across and

Down clue, is called checked. A whitecell that is only part of one clue isunchecked.

Crossword grids such as those appear-ing in most North American newspapersand magazines feature solid areas ofwhite squares. Every letter is checked, and usually each answer is required tocontain at least three letters. In these puz-zles shaded squares are usually limited toabout one-sixth of the design. Anothercomponent of North American puzzles isthat the grid should have symmetry whenrotated 180 degrees. The pattern should

appear the same even if the puzzleis turned upside down. Most

puzzle designs require thewhite cells to also be con-

nected in one mass throughshared sides, which is a

concept called beingorthogonally con-

tiguous.Puzzles are

often standardsizes. Easierpuzzles have

fewer cellsand may have

15x15 squares. Puzzlescan increase in complexity as

they grow larger, up to 25x25. Manynewspapers start out with easier puzzlesearlier in the work week and move to aharder puzzle in time for the Sunday puz-zle.

In terms of American-style puzzleswhere all of the white cells are checked, not all of the solutions will be full words.American puzzles allow for abbrevia-tions, variant spellings or even foreignwords. This isn't the case with Britishpuzzles. Most American puzzles follow atheme.

Crossword puzzles have become acomponent of the daily lives of people allaround the world. They continue to be asource of entertainment and even compe-tition.

Puzzles, games andeducational value

Why do people buy and play games? Entertainment value certainly factors in,but there are several other benefits to puzzles and games, including their education-al value.

Just think about what happens when children (or adults) sit down to play a boardgame or contemplate a puzzle. Individuals come together, learn lessons about get-ting along and strategize. Games also encourage following guidelines for play andwinning or losing with good manners. There are many who believe these are valu-able life lessons, but games and puzzles also may have other intrinsic educationalvalue in the real world.

Although it can't be assumed that playing games or doing puzzles will helpmake better students, there are some indications that playing certain games canhave academic benefits.

In a 2008 study by Geetha Ramani and Robert Siegler, preschoolers wereinvolved in "number line"board game research, where the player had to move agame piece through a series of sequentially numbered spaces. Prior to and after thegame play the children were given math tasks appropriate for their age group. Thekids who were in the control group and didn't play experienced no math skillimprovement. But the ones who had played the line game had marked improve-ment in measured math skills. Ramani and Siegler have also found correlationsbetween the number of board games that a child plays and a greater propensity forbetter preschool math performance.

Puzzles are another form of recreation that also have some educational merit andcould trigger certain areas of the brain, resulting in improvement in intellectualskills. Puzzles develop hand and eye coordination and foster skills in problem-solv-ing. They also encourage kids not to give up until the finished product is reached.

Chess has been a game of strategy played throughout the ages. There have beenstatements that chess can help a child become more intellectual and do better atschool. Others argue the flip side, that it is the intellectual child who gravitatestoward chess play and therefore skews the numbers in the terms of intelligence andchess relation.

Still there is some evidence that chess has educational merit. Markus Scholz ofthe University of Leipzig in Germany studied kids with learning disabilities.Researchers assigned students to receive either 5 hours of math instruction eachweek or 4 hours of math and 1 hour of chess instruction each week. The kids weretested at the beginning of the school year and again at the end. The students whohad received chess lessons showed more improvement in basic math skills likecounting and addition than those who had just received tutoring.

When choosing games for children, educational value is derived most fromgames that require deductive reasoning and not pure chance from the spin of awheel. A game like "Clue" or chess requires strategy and reasoning to become thewinner. Even games like "Connect Four," "Boggle," "Scrabble," and other deduc-tive games are good choices to consider.

Although games and puzzles have the fun factor, there are educational benefitsthat may arise also in play.

Layaway plans make a comeback

Warranties ... needed or not?

If you thought layaway plans had gone the way ofeight-track players and floppy disks, think again. Thedeferred payment or installment plan, once popularwith budget-conscious consumers - especially duringthe holiday season - is making a big comeback.

For people who are unfamiliar with the concept orwere born after the 1980s (when installment plansgave way to credit card purchases and other types offinancing), layaway is a simple way to purchase mer-chandise - interest-free - over time. Consumers selectthe items they want to buy from a retailer offering theplan, make a deposit, which often includes a modestservice charge, and pay for the merchandise over aspecified period. Once the item has been paid in full, the retailer releases the goods to the consumer. Theonly potential glitch is if the consumer fails to makepayments in full or on time. In that event, the retailerhas the option of returning the customer's payments(less service charges) and reselling the items.

While there's no doubt that today's shaky economyhas contributed to the revival of layaway plans, econo-mists and representatives of several of the nation'sleading retailers and layaway providers - Sears, K-Mart, Burlington Coat Factory, Marshall's, TJ Maxx,Toys R' Us, and Hallmark - insist that the recession isonly part of the story. For retailers, layaway plans

open the doors to millions of new customers whowould not be able to make purchases without them. For consumers, paying in installments is increasinglyviewed as a sound financial tool for purchasing neces-sities and managing expenses, particularly during theholiday season.

Overall, layaway plans are heavy on benefits, including:

No fine print: For the most part, retailers' layawayplans are straightforward and easy to understand.

No credit checks: Credit checks are not required toenter into a layaway contract, making it a great optionfor people who are trying to rebuild their credit due toforeclosure or past credit card problems.

No need to leave home: Some retailers havelaunched e-layaway programs, making it possible forconsumers to purchase online over time.

There are only a few drawbacks to layaway plans, but they are worth noting:

Missed payments: Making payments - and makingthem on time - is the key to a successful layaway pur-chase. The penalty for missing payments is the cancel-lation of the layaway contract. However, most plansoffer a seven-day grace period for missed payments. Itis important to know the details of each retailer's planbefore signing a contract.

Here are some tips for some of the most commonitems:

Appliances: Extended warranties for these usuallycome in the form of an extended service contract, which will protect the product against failure one tofour years beyond the manufacturer's warranty.Because most problems occur within the first fewdays of use or long after the manufacturer's warrantyand extended service contract have expired, expertssuggest you stay away from the contract or negotiatewith dealers to have it thrown in for free.

Cell phones: Extended warranties for these usuallycome in the form of a replacement agreement, whichwill provide a new phone in the event the old one islost, stolen or damaged. Whether you purchase thisdepends on the recipient's phone use. If they are con-stantly losing or dropping their phone, you may wantto purchase it. If not or they change phones often, youshould stay away from it.

Electronics: As with appliances, extended war-ranties for these usually come in the form of anextended service contract that provides one to fouryears of protection beyond the manufacturer's warran-ty or runs concurrently with it. Some may eveninclude free performance checks or coverage for prob-lems resulting from normal use. Experts advise youonly buy this for laptops, which are more susceptibleto problems.

Furniture: Extended warranties for this usuallycomes in the form of fabric protection, which issprayed on at the factory and provides a barrieragainst dirt and spills. Some plans come with a two-to five-year stain warranty that guarantees repair orreplacement in the event a stain cannot be removed.Since most furniture is treated anyway before leavingthe factory and some warranties exclude certain stainslike chocolate and red wine, experts advise youagainst getting this.

Delicious sugar cookiesPart of the enjoyment of the holiday

season involves spending time in thekitchen whipping up delicious treats.Particularly for young children, bakingsugar cookies with Mom or Dad and thendecorating the creations can be a festiveway to spend a day.

Those short on time can turn to store-made sugar cookie dough for their cookiemaking, but those who want the authentictaste of cookies from scratch, there aremany recipes from which to choose.

This recipe for rolled sugar cookiesproduces cookies that will hold up well tocutting and baking. They're also quite deli-cious.

Rolled Sugar Cookies(Makes 5 dozen)1 1/2 cups butter, softened

3 cups white sugar

4 eggs

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

5 cups all-purpose flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

2. Mix the dry ingredients together andadd to the wet ingredients until incorporat-ed. Cover and refrigerate the dough for atleast one hour.

3. Preheat the oven to 400 F. On a sur-face coated with some confectioners'sugar, roll out the dough to between 1/4and 1/2 inch thickness (a thinner cookiewill be crispier). Cut out shapes with acookie cutter.

4. Line a cookie sheet with parchmentpaper. Place cookies 1 inch apart on theparchment.

5. Bake around 5 to 7 minutes, or justuntil the edges of the cookies start tobrown. Remove promptly from the cookiesheet and cool on a rack.

6. Decorate the cookies using icing(recipe below) when the cookies cool, or

sprinkle with colored sugar while cookiesare warm.

Cookie Icing(Covers 1 dozen cookies)1 cup confectioners' sugar

2 teaspoons milk

2 teaspoons light corn syrup

1/4 teaspoon almond extract

Assorted food coloring

2. Divide the icing into separate con-tainers to add choice of colors. Mix untilwell blended.

3. Use a piping tip and pastry bag tooutline the cookie in a thin bead of theicing. Allow to dry.

3. Then use a paintbrush to fill in thedesign with the remainder of the icing.

4. Wait an hour or more for the icing tocompletely harden before serving.

Note: Gel colors found in craft stores in thecake decorating aisle produce deep colors withlittle product necessary. They're also less likelyto thin out icings than liquid food coloring.

My husband and several family mem-bers are diabetics, and I'm mindful oftheir health challenges when preparingholiday meals. Holiday celebrations areall about food, and this can be a verychallenging time for individuals dealingwith diabetes. Holiday stress and bounti-ful food can lead to impulse eating andrisky blood-sugar levels.

Forgoing all holiday foods isn't reallyan option for those with diabetes, sincefood is a major part of our celebrations. With some planning and by keeping toyour routine, you, too, can manage yourdiabetes and keep blood sugar under con-trol. Try these tips to help face the holi-days head on.

Monitor your blood sugar: Maintainyour routine of checking your bloodsugar and monitor more closely if eatingfrequently or at irregular times.

Eat before the party: To avoidovereating, eat sensibly during the day ofa party. Otherwise you'll arrive hungry, making it hard to maintain control. It'simportant to spread your carbohydratesevenly throughout the day to better man-age diabetes.

Be choosy: Look over the food offer-ings, and don't waste calories and carbo-hydrates on foods that you could eat any-time. Save space in your meal plan for"special" holiday treats. Some people findit helpful to keep a food journal duringthe holidays to help track carbohydratesand avoid overeating.

Downsize portions: Trim your portionsizes, especially if you're not certainabout the ingredients in a tempting casse-role or dessert. Control the amount youeat by either limiting yourself to one tripthrough the buffet line, or make the firsttrip primarily vegetables and salad, thenyour second helpings could be small por-tions of heartier, richer fare.

Bring your own healthful food: Foodwon't be a challenge if you take along a

vegetable dish to share that contains littleor no carbohydrates (like my recipe forMicrowave Lemon and Garlic GreenBeans). Others will appreciate the low-calorie option as well. Consider revising afavorite holiday recipe by substitutinglower-calorie ingredients. For example, instead of fried onions in the green beancasserole, add roasted, caramelizedonions and lower-fat mushroom sauce. For dessert, use sugar-free gelatins orpuddings.

Keep eating in perspective: Focus onthe fun, not the food. Enjoy connectingwith family and friends during the holi-day gatherings. Spend your time in con-versation rather than thinking aboutwhat's on your plate. It's often helpful tokeep your back to the buffet table, ormove to another part of the room.

Stay active and get plenty of rest:

Holiday stress and fatigue can be reducedwith adequate sleep and exercise.Physical activity, like walking or liftingweights, will lower your stress, burn calo-ries and help control blood sugar. Lack ofsleep can influence your hunger andincrease stress.

Use these tips and this delicious recipefor Microwave Lemon and Garlic GreenBeans to safeguard your health. Have ahappy holiday season!

Many people know that stress can bebad for your mental health, but as it turnsout, it can also be bad for your physicalhealth. Researchers have linked behav-iors associated with stress, such as drink-ing alcohol, using drugs, or even bingingon comfort foods, with the deteriorationof the adrenal gland. The adrenal glandreleases stress hormones that signal tothe body whether to fight or get out ofthe situation (flight). If mollifying sub-stances are introduced into the body, itnegatively affects the delicate way thestress system works, and the adrenalgland eventually putters out. That meansthe body can be in a constant level ofstress, or a person can feel stressed evenover minor things. This also impacts theheart, liver, blood pressure, and a numberof other factors. Keeping stress in checkis important, but it shouldn't be done in away that does more harm than good.

Many a favorite family tradition come the holi-day season starts in the kitchen. Come the holidays, people tend to gain a pound or two because of theabundance of good food this time of year. It’s nocoincidence that come New Year’s Day, the mostcommon resolution is to shed a few pounds.

While New Year’s Day might be for resolutions, the holidays are all about enjoying good times withfriends and family and enjoying the goodfood that typically comes with thosetimes. Among the more popularand traditional choices isGingerbread Men. Those hostinga party this season can use the fol-lowing recipe for “Gingerbread Men”courtesy of Sara Perry’s “Holiday Baking”(Chronicle Books).

Gingerbread MenMakes About 2 Dozen 51⁄2-inch Cookies21⁄4 cups all-purpose flour

1⁄4 teaspoon baking soda

1⁄2 teaspoon salt

2 teaspoons ground ginger

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1⁄2 teaspoon ground cloves

1⁄4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1⁄2 cup vegetable shortening

1⁄4 cup firmly packed light or dark brown

sugar

1 egg

1⁄2 cup light or dark molasses

1. Into a medium bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, salt, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and nut-meg, then lightly whisk and set aside.

2. In a stand mixer set on medium speed, beat theshortening until creamy, about 30 seconds. On medi-um speed, beat in the brown sugar until light andlump free. Beat in the egg until well blended, scrap-ing down the sides and bottom of the bowl as neces-sary. Beat in the molasses until blended. Turn off themixer, add half the flour mixture, and beat on lowspeed until blended. Add the remaining flour and

beat until blended.3. Using lightly floured

hands, gather the stickydough into a ball. Divide theball in half and flatten eachportion into a 6- to 8-inchdisk. Wrap each disk inplastic wrap and chill for 2

hours or until firm.4.

Preheattheoven to

350 F.Line a baking

sheet with parch-ment paper orgrease it lightly andset aside.

5. Remove thedough from therefrigerator and, if

needed, softenslightly for easier

handling. Roll itout 1/8 inchthick on a

lightly flouredboard, between 2sheets of parchmentpaper or heavy-duty plastic wrap, or on a pastrycloth with a cloth-covered rolling pin.

6. Lightly dip a 51/2-inch gingerbread man cook-ie cutter into flour, then firmly press it straight downinto the dough. Repeat, cutting the cookies closetogether to avoid rerolling. Using a spatula, careful-ly transfer the cookies to the baking sheet. If a cook-ie is to be used as an ornament, press a hole throughthe top with a drinking straw or a large skewer.

7. Bake until the cookies are lightly browned, 9to 11 minutes. Let the cookies firm and cool slightlyon the baking sheet before transferring to a rack tocool completely. If desired, decorate the cookieswith icing and decorative candles.

Christmas tree safety tipsHere are a few fire-safety tips you should practice

when decorating a Christmas tree:•Check your tree lights for broken or frayed wires

and loose connections.•Replace non-working light bulbs.•Avoid decorating Christmas trees with candles.•Make sure live Christmas trees are fresh. Don't buy

trees with brown needles or dry limbs.•Consider having the tree sprayed with a flame retar-

dant chemical.•Give the tree plenty of water. Never let the base

holder dry out.•Don't place the tree near a heat source, open flames

or room exits.•Keep light strings and other electrical decorations

out of children's reach.•Always unplug the Christmas tree lights when you

leave the house or go to bed.•Don't burn the Christmas tree or package wrappings

in a fireplace or wood stove.

Homemade ornaments a treat for the holidaysOnce the perfect tree has been selected and placed in

the home, the next task is to take out all of the orna-ments collected over the years and hang them on thetree.

Part of what makes decorating the tree so memorableis the ornaments that have been collected over time -many of them handmade treasures. Looking throughthem is a trip down memory lane, bringing to mind thehappy times these ornaments recall.

Today in a hurried society, it may seem easier to sim-ply head to the store and purchase a box full of orna-ments for the tree. But spending time creating your owncan be a family event that’s a fun way to spend timetogether. Here are a few ideas.

“Tie-Dyed” Balls: Create ornaments that have theimpression of being tie-dyed. Simply buy a box of clearglass ornaments from a craft store. Pop off the metal topand squirt one or two different colors of acrylic paintinto the center of the ball. Replace the top and twirl theball around until the paint coats the inside in a marbledpattern. Place on a surface where the balls won’t roll, such as an empty egg carton, and let dry.Wire Ornaments: Purchase thin craft wire and smallbeads of various colors. Bend the wire into holidayshapes, such as candy canes and stars. This can beachieved by wrapping the wire around cookie cutters astemplates. Thread the beads onto the wire shape until itis completely covered with beads. Use a needle-nose

pliers to twist together the two open ends to seal theornament shut.Popsicle Stick Treasures: Craft sticks, popsicle sticks, whatever you call them, these wooden items can beglued and painted to create a number of ornaments forthe tree. Fashion them into a triangular shape and paintgreen for a Christmas tree. Glue a handful together andpaint white for a snowflake. Dust these ornaments withglitter for even more sparkle on the tree.Craft Foam Creations: Pop into any craft store or eventoy store and you will likely find packages or loosesheets of thin colored foam that can be cut and designedinto everything from sun visors to doorknob signs to funornaments for the tree.

Exploring thefirst Christmas

The birth of Jesus Christ has long beencelebrated on December 25 of every year. Thefirst recorded celebration of Christmas datesback to December 25, 336. However, it is notknown for sure if Christ was even born dur-ing the month of December, much less on theday we come together to celebrate.

It is speculated that Christ may have beenborn as early as November or as late asMarch. However, through time the date ofDecember 25 was adopted as His offical birth-day. In the early days of Christianity, therewasn't much emphasis given to celebrating orrecording birthdays. Rather, the day a saintdied received more emphasis and was consid-ered more significant than a birth.

In terms of Christ, some historians andreligious scholars surmise that Christmaswas chosen to be in December to coincidewith other religious and cultural festivalstaking place at the same time.

Regardless of how it started, Christmasremains a time to share in the wonder ofChrist's birth and the magic of charity andlove this time of the year.
