Hi! My name is Dr Karl Kruszelnicki and I’m a scientist who loves reading! I have a memory of draping myself over a big single-seat armchair and reading about the Burmese Rebels in the Second World War—they were fighting the Japanese invaders. The Rebels were called “Chindits”. (They were also called Merrill’s Marauders.) Several decades later, my wife asked for the answer to a crossword clue— it just so happened it was for the Burmese Rebels. I let the request float around in my consciousness. After about 15 minutes, my mouth suddenly opened and I heard myself say “Chindit”. It was the correct answer! Books soon became my windows into the Universe. I became fascinated with Science when I was around seven. Somebody gave me an Astronomy book for my birthday. I was astonished to learn the Earth orbited the Sun, and that there were eight other planets (sorry, Pluto!). I was even more astonished to learn there were several hundred billion stars in our galaxy and the Milky Way, as well as several hundred billion galaxies in the Universe. We now know that in our galaxy, each star has at least 1.6 planets orbiting it. I have never lost that sense of awe and wonder. Then at around age 12, I stumbled across Science Fiction. I read one Science Fiction book every day because all I wanted was the way-out Science. I read them very quickly in a speed-reading mode. Science has allowed me to work in a great many industries and research in many areas. People ask me why I have had so many different jobs including medical doctor in the Kids Hospital, breakfast TV weatherman, tester of 4WD vehicles … and more! I did it to earn money and to gain new skills, as well as to keep my brain alive and fresh. One of the most interesting facts I discovered is that Belly Button Fluff is a mixture of dead skin cells and clothing fibres. It is usually blue because on average people wear more blue clothing than any other colour. If I met myself at age 10 I would tell my younger self to get a healthy mind in a healthy body. Find a sport you love that will not give you injuries. Most importantly, read lots and lots of books! Hi! My name is Dr Karl Kruszelnicki and I’m a scientist who loves reading!

I have a memory of draping myself over a big single-seat armchair and reading about the Burmese Rebels in the Second World War—they were fighting the

Japanese invaders. The Rebels were called “Chindits”. (They were also called Merrill’s Marauders.)

Several decades later, my wife asked for the answer to a crossword clue— it just so happened it was for the Burmese Rebels. I let the request float around in my consciousness. After about 15 minutes, my mouth suddenly opened and I heard myself say “Chindit”. It was the correct answer!

Books soon became my windows into the Universe. I became fascinated with Science when I was around seven. Somebody gave me an Astronomy book for

my birthday. I was astonished to learn the Earth orbited the Sun, and that there were eight other planets (sorry, Pluto!). I was even more astonished to learn

there were several hundred billion stars in our galaxy and the Milky Way, as well as several hundred billion galaxies in the Universe. We now

know that in our galaxy, each star has at least 1.6 planets orbiting it.

Find a sport you love that will

not give you injuries. Most importantly, read lots and lots of books!
