“… Underground space utilization has increasing im-portance as it enables us to make alternative use of the earth’s surface for improvement in the quality of daily life. Particularly in urban areas, there is a worldwide trend to keep ground surface as green fields by putting existing surface structures into underground. Consequentially, tunnellers and/or underground space users are really creators of a new and sustainable world. In this aspect, the main title of this Colloquium, “UNDER CITY”, is really timely to discuss how we can utilize the underground space in urban areas. Underground spaces are needed not only for urban transportation but also for marketing area, goods storage, water supply and storage, sewage, waste transport, oil and gas storage, etc. Moreover, since the weather is nowadays abnormal with heavy rainfall (for example, serious flooding that occurred in Bangkok, Thailand last year), the underground structures for flood-ing control are hot issues around the world. The “SMART” tunnel in Kuala Lumpur might be a good example. I sup-pose all these topics will be discussed (along with techni-cal issues) in the Colloquium so that this event is really beneficial to everyone who is interested in “UNDER CITY” …..

Proceedings of Symposium on tunneling in Mediterranean region, Poreč, May 7-8, 2013. The character of submitted articles has defined major area of interest or experiences gained on different sites worldwide that may be used in the region. The focus is on similarities of Mediterranean region to the region of SEE as well as intention of using underground more in the future.
“Underground spaces are needed not only for transportation pur-
poses but also for marketing area, goods storage, water supply and
storage, sewage, waste transport, oil and gas storage, etc. Moreover,
since the weather is nowadays abnormal with heavy rainfall, the un-
derground structures for flooding control are hot issues around the

tially, tunnellers and/or underground space users are really creators
of a new and sustainable world. As the ITA president, I am happy and
proud to say that the underground space utilizations are booming

“...I believe the past experience is really important in design and construction of new tunnelling project. It is equally important for tunnelling engineers to understand the fundamental principles of underground structures formed by excavation (in contrast to above ground structures). In this aspect, it is timely and beneficial to tun-nelling engineers to hold this Symposium to exchange technical knowledge and ideas regarding tunnelling and underground struc-tures among South-East European countries.
Underground space utilization has increasing importance as it en-ables us to make alternative use of the earth’s surface for improve-ment in the quality of daily life. Particularly in urban areas, there is a worldwide trend to keep ground surface as green fields by putting existing surface structures into underground. Consequentially, tun-nelling engineers are really creators of a new and sustainable world. I hope we - ITA, ITA Croatia, and neighboring member nations - take this opportunity to demonstrate to the government officials and de-cision makers that tunnelling and underground structures will offer us green and long lasting benefits....”

Using Underground Space 2011. 240 pages, 2GB USB stickISBN: 978-953-55728-6-2300kn/40€
Proceedings of 1st Scientific symposium on tunnels and underground structures in SEE, Dubrovnik, April 7-9, 2011. This book points out the importance of using underground space in order to improve the quality of daily life. The focus is on construction projects and plans in the future. The main goal is to spread the ideas and knowledge about tunnelling wider in the region.
Drugi uradak edicije stručnih knjiga HKIG bavi se područjem tunelogradnje na području Re-publike Hrvatske. Problematika planiranja, projektiranja, izvođenja i održavanja prikazuje
The second book in the series of professional books published by the Croatian Chamber of Civil Engi-neers (HKIG) deals with the subject of tunnelling in
the Republic of Croatia. The different aspects of the pla-nning, design, construction and maintenance are illustra-ted through the examples of the tunnelling projects imple-mented recently in the Republic of Croatia. The immensity, complexity and state of the art of these tunnelling projects put them into the foreground of the achievements in the contemporary Croatian civil engineering scene. The su-ccessful development and implementation of these type of structures was made possible by undertaking multi-disciplinary approach and paying studious attention to each of the different project phases indispensable for the safe completion and operation of these exacting projects. In addition to reviewing the design considerations and decision making processes, the article presents various examples of the investigation works, design, calculation and dimensioning activities related to the currently valid regulations and guidelines based on the applicable regula-tions in the field of the tunnelling in this part of the Europe. This book is the unique example of the contemporary approach to publishing professional books through appli-cation of the expert knowledge and experience of the de-signers, specialists in the field. This book is intended to the professional and educational circuits over the wider area of this part of Europe.

ITA has performed a survey of the development in the global tunnel market. Over a period of 10 years the tunnelling market has shown a steady growth in Europe, North and South America and Australasia with a global growth over 5% per year during the last decade. The major growth has taken place in Asia where the market has increased by approximately 15 times over a 10 year period. New market has developed particular in the Middle East where we now see a huge activity in the tunnelling industry where there where hardly any market 10 years ago.
We therefore see a bright future ahead of us and we want ITA to play an important role in this. For that purpose we have launched the ITA Strategic Plan 2013-2016 which was accepted by the General Assembly in Iguassu last year. One of the initiatives we took was to initiate an ITA Young Members group, in order to attract young engineers and scientists to our association and industry.
With the increased growth we see ahead it is important that we are able to boost our human resources and know how in order to respond to our societies increased demand for the use of the underground.

“....the significance of utilizing the underground space is increasing, espe-
cially in major cities where daily traffic congestions have a serious impact
on the quality of life of the inhabitants.Cities of South-East Europe are a
good example, where the new methods and technologies for using un-
derground space, may be used to decrease the congested surface areas
by an improved use of the underground. The major challenge is that the
use of the underground space has to be increased to reduce traffic con-
gestions and to improve the quality in every day life and therefore, the
significance of this symposium is to provide new information and to pro-
mote the development of the underground space and its benefits. The
underground space can be used not only for infrastructure projects but
also for shopping centre, energy storage, water reservoir and for drainage
thereby allowing the surface areas to be released for an increased use for
the inhabitants outdoor living. “

“....The problematic of karst has been already mentioned and heavily discussed on the WTC2015 that was held in Dubrovnik 2015 as the part of ITA CET Foundation Training Course. Experiences that were shown there were very useful and gave an overview of the state-of–the-art in tunnelling through for-mations having karst phenomena.
Especially area of Mediteranean coast will very often have a problem of underground structures com-ing in contact with karstic phenomena in limestone formations. Therefore the use of new technologies and methods will give additional support to the use of underground space in the cities with masses of tourists visiting them during summer months. Such additional summer traffic is asking for more capac-ity of traffic lines passing through areas of old cities and location of such new traffic lines could only be underground preserving old city cores on the surface ...“
