D Burton, Acting Principal Term 2 Issue 10 5 July 2019 Monday 22 July is Day 2 Term 2 has been an incredibly busy one at Birkenhead College. This week the school production of Spamalotis in full swing, with staff and students having invested hours and hours of time into the show. A massive thank you to Gaby Reid, Shannon Coulomb and all those involved – its a huge responsibility to take on, and you have done a wonderful job. If you havent seen it, tickets are still on sale for the performance tonight and tomorrow night! Yesterday we had a full school assembly where we introduced the Tui Award. This new award recognises students who uphold the school values of Respect, Whanau, and Pride, and have demonstrated this in a subtle way without seeking anything in return. We had three recipients this term Benjamin McLeod, Raiyan Samir, and Rachel Samuel. Congratulations to all of you, and well done on being such outstanding BC citizens. Finally, it has been wonderful to see and hear the sports results that have been filtering through over the past few weeks. Birkenhead College constantly challenges schools of much larger size, and there are always stories of great sportsmanship and support from our students. Have a safe break everyone, and we look forward to seeing our students refreshed at the start of Term 3. Monday 22 July is Day 2

Term 2 has been an incredibly busy one at Birkenhead College. This week the school production of ‘Spamalot’ is in full swing, with staff and students having invested hours and hours of time into the show. A massive thank you to Gaby Reid, Shannon Coulomb and all those involved – it’s a huge responsibility to take on, and you have done a wonderful job. If you haven’t seen it, tickets are still on sale for the performance tonight and tomorrow

night!

Yesterday we had a full school assembly where we introduced the Tui Award. This new award recognises students who uphold the school values of Respect, Whanau, and Pride, and have demonstrated this in a subtle way without seeking anything in return. We had three recipients this term – Benjamin McLeod, Raiyan Samir, and Rachel Samuel.

Gateway – Automotive

Matthew Russell has thoroughly enjoyed learning about making custom cars at Fraser Cars in Beach Haven. At the same time, he has almost completed all of the units in the Start Up Ignition programme with MITO. This is like a mini apprenticeship into the automotive industry. This achievement combined with his valuable experience at Fraser Cars will give him a huge advantage when he is ready to apply for a full time apprenticeship. Well done, Matthew!

Term 3 Sexuality Education - Health

Next term Year 9 and 10 form classes will be doing a Sexuality Education Health block. Lessons will cover a range of topics such as relationships, communication, assertiveness, sexuality, conception, contraception, consent, healthy choices etc. If you would like to discuss these units or have any questions/concerns please contact Jenni Dryburgh, [email protected] HOD Physical Education and Health Birkenhead College.

Tough Guy / Gal Challenge

Last week the Year 13 PE class participated in the ‘Tough Guy/ Gal Challenge’. They trained hard for over a month to prepare for the challenge. On the day they braved ice, rain, water and a whole lot of mud!

Well done to Jason Bhana and Dawn Sadsad who were the fastest boy and girl on the day. A big thankyou to Ms Dryburgh and Mrs Hurring who helped out on the day.

Spamalot

Our 2019 production opened on Wednesday night. Spamalot is lovingly ripped off from the beloved movie ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail’ and is just the right amount of silly.

This year’s production features a live band and fantastic performances from our talented students! Thanks to all those who have supported the cast and crew during rehearsals!

There may be tickets available at the door, but you can make sure you don’t miss out by booking through https://www.eventfinda.co.nz/2019/monty-pythons-spamalot/auckland/birkenhead

Textiles

Year 12 Textiles students have the context of Sustainable Textiles as their focus for the year. Upcycling and recycling fabrics gave all students the opportunity to make an intricate folded star patchwork cushion while ensuring their precision sewing skills were put into practice.

If you run into difficulties, please email Miss Fuller [email protected] for assistance.
