#BookBento: A visual representation of your novel
Transcript

#BookBento:A visual

representation of your novel

#BookBento https://www.instagram.com/bookbento/?hl=en

The assignment in summary

• You will create a “Book Bento” image using the book cover and five objects that represent your understanding of the novel

• The image will then be used to create a Thinglink which is a presentation tool that allows “hotspots” in which you can add your paragraphs that communicate your understanding.

• Here are some examples from other schools (your written criteria is different so only observe these to see what a Thinglink can do)

• https://www.thinglink.com/scene/1124773740937216001• https://www.thinglink.com/scene/1029534272651788289

Part 1: the image• The cover of the book and 5 other objects that hold meaning/represent

something in the book• Make your object choices clever, creative and meaningful in terms of connections

to the book• Physical objects, creative photoshopping or cutout visuals are all options to

create your box• Consider: Background, spacing, placement of objects, patterns, colour and variety

of objects etc.• Use a ppt slide OR a photo editing site such as https://pixomatic.us/ platform to

build your image. You can also use your photography skills if you can find all the objects. Use the “square” option on your phone AND use an appropriate background. Or a mix of all???

• Use free images such as Getty Images or stock images on pixomatic if you are doing this digitally

The Image

Here is an example of the beginning of a digital image using piktomatic. I used Getty Images for the conch and google images for the book cover

Part 2-Creating a Thinglink with your image:

• Using Thinglink allows you to make the image interactive with your content: add text, images, links, and video to your image using tags. Just hover over the circles and your content appears. Your Bento Box and tags will take the viewer into the layers of your understanding and critical thinking around these three large learning concepts:

• I understand that texts are socially, culturally, geographically and historically constructed.• I can recognize and identify personal, social and cultural contexts, values, and perspectives in texts including gender, sexual orientation, and socio-economic factors. • I understand how literature deepens our understanding of diverse, complex ideas about identity, others, and the world.

The Criteria for the hotspots• Minimum 5 dots and 5 corresponding images for the Bento Box

image. The items/images can be from the novel or an item that is not in the book but visually relates to an idea/issues/theme.

• One of the dots can be your BEST literary lens paragraph

• PLUS the book cover. It is to have an audio file. Maximum three minutes of you critiquing the book. You can sell it or slam it, but you must have evidence.

• Word count for all the texts parts combined: 1000 words minimum – each text/description section will be like a mini-literary analysis, demonstrating flow from beginning to middle to end with transitions and proper quote integration.

• Make sure you integrate a minimum of two quotes per dot/text section into your writing as evidence. You are excused from quotes for the literary lens dot so there should be 8 quotes total.

Prompt suggestions for the 5 write ups in the hotspots…• I understand that texts are socially, culturally, geographically and historically constructed.

• How can your earlier research (or new research) on the author’s background, inspiration and creative process be included in your new understanding of the book now that you have finished reading?

• I can recognize and identify personal, social and cultural contexts, values, and perspectives in texts including gender, sexual orientation, and socio-economic factors.

• How has your understanding of the book expanded by reading through a lens? ONE OF THE HOTSPOTS IS YOUR BEST LENS PARAGRAPH. The rest of the hotspots can incorporate any of the lens if you choose. Can you link to the question above? Can you bring in any of the discussion questions from your Wednesday Discussions?

• I understand how literature deepens our understanding of diverse, complex ideas about identity, others, and the world.

• What have you learned about the world through this story? What CONNECTIONS can you make to yourself, other pieces of literature, the world? Can you answer one of the inquiry questions with insightful, strong evidence?

Remember..

• 5 hotspots (including the lens paragraph) AND an audio hotspot on the book cover in which you sell or slam the book.

Possible steps:

• Start building your Bento Book Image on a ppt slide or a photo editing site. Start with an appropriate background

• Add the cover of your novel in the middle (personally, I would do the audio recording last BECAUSE you may change your mind or find evidence for your opinion AFTER you have further analyzed the book)

• Choose ONE of your lens paragraphs that shows the most understanding and depth. • Choose a physical object or image that best represents your ideas in the paragraph • Add that image in a space that seems appropriate • What are the other four objects that would fit well in your Bento image?
