About: CAMBODIA Cambodia is located in the southern portion of the Indochina Peninsula in Southeast

Asia. Its total landmass is 181,035 square kilometres (69,898 sq mi), bordered by

Thailand to the northwest, Laos to the northeast, Vietnam to the east and the Gulf of

Thailand to the southwest.

Cambodia's climate, like that of the rest of

Southeast Asia, is dominated by monsoons,

which are known as tropical wet and dry

because of the distinctly marked seasonal

differences.

Cambodia has a temperature range from 21

to 35 °C (69.8 to 95 °F) and experiences

tropical monsoons.

Cambodia has two distinct seasons. The rainy

season, which runs from May to October, can

see temperatures drop to 22 °C (71.6 °F)

and is generally accompanied with high

humidity. The dry season lasts from

November to April when temperatures can

rise up to 40 °C (104 °F) around April.

Climate Cambodia’s economy today is a product of almost two decades of policy transformation from a “centrally planned” to a

“market-oriented” economy that favors investment, trade and private sector development within sub-regional (GMS), regional

(ASEAN and East Asia) and global contexts. Policy reforms along with the end of civil conflict and political stability have fostered

dramatic economic growth, averaging 7.8 percent between 1994 and 2010, lifted per capita income from USD248 to USD735 and

changed the economic structure from an agrarian economy to a more balanced mix of agriculture, industry and services2.

Cambodia’s development strategies have regarded trade and investment liberalization as key to ensuring inclusive sustainable

economic growth that can contribute to poverty reduction and social development. Policy priorities aim to (i) create a favorable

macroeconomic and financial environment; (ii) promote sub-regional, regional and global economic integration and cooperation;

(iii) foster economic and trade diversification and competitiveness; (iv) strengthen private sector participation; and (v) attract

investment through a more conducive business and investment climate.

Cambodia is an active participant in a range of sub-regional and regional socio-economic programs including the GMS, the World

Trade Organization (WTO), Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS), ASEAN and several

ASEAN-initiated schemes including ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA), ASEAN-China FTA, ASEAN-Korea FTA and ASEAN-Japan

FTA.

Culture The golden age of Cambodia was between the 9th and 14th century,

during the Angkor period, during which it was a powerful and prosperous

empire that flourished and dominated almost all of inland Southeast

Asia. Many temples from this period however, like Bayon and Angkor Wat

still remain today. Cambodia's unparalleled achievements in art,

architecture, music and dance during this period have had a great

influence on many neighboring kingdoms, namely Thailand and Laos. The

effect of Angkorian culture can still be seen today in those countries, as

they share many close characteristics with current-day Cambodia.

The Angkorian architects and sculptors

created temples that mapped the cosmic

world in stone. Khmer decorations drew

inspiration from religion, and mythical

creatures from Hinduism and Buddhism

were carved on walls.

Temples were built in accordance to the

rule of ancient Khmer architecture that

dictated that a basic temple layout include

a central shrine, a courtyard, an enclosing

wall, and a moat. Khmer motifs use many

creatures from Buddhist and Hindu

mythology, like the Royal Palace in Phnom

Penh, use motifs such as the garuda, a

mythical bird in Hinduism.

Architecture

3

The architecture of Cambodia developed in

stages under the Khmer Empire from the 9th

to the 15th century, preserved in many

buildings of the Angkor temple. The remains

of secular architecture from this time are

rare, as only religious buildings were made of

stone. The architecture of the Angkor period

used specific structural features and styles,

which are one of the main methods used to

date the temples, along with inscriptions.

Page 5: Booklaet for winter TNs

Cuisine Khmer cuisine is similar to that of its

Southeast Asian neighbors. It shares

many similarities with Thai cuisine,

Vietnamese cuisine and Teochew

cuisine. Cambodian cuisine also uses

fish sauce in soups, stir-fried cuisine,

and as dippings. The Chinese

influence can be noted in the

common chha (Khmer: ឆារ, Stir

frying) and in the use of many

variations of rice noodles. A

particular popular dish of ultimately

Chinese origin is "pork broth rice

noodle soup", similar to phở, called

kuy tieu (Khmer: គុយទាវ). Indian

influenced dishes include many types

of curry known as kari (Khmer: ការ)ី

that call for dried spices such as star

anise, cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg

and fennel as well as local

ingredients like lemongrass, garlic,

kaffir lime leaves, shallots and

galangal that give dishes a

distinctive Cambodian flavor. Banh

Chaew (Khmer: នំបាញ់ឆែវ), the

Khmer version of the Vietnamese

Bánh xèo, is also a popular dish.

4

Khmer cuisine is noted for the use

of prahok (ប្រហុក), a type of

fermented fish paste, in many

dishes as a distinctive flavoring.

When prahok is not used, it is

likely to be kapǐ (កាពិ) instead, a

kind of fermented shrimp paste.

Coconut milk is the main

ingredient of many Khmer curries

and desserts. Cambodians prefer

either jasmine rice or sticky

(glutinous) rice. The latter is used

more in dessert dishes with fruits

such as durian while jasmine rice

is eaten with meals. Almost every

meal is eaten with a bowl of rice.

Typically, Cambodians eat their

meals with at least three or four

separate dishes. Each individual

dish will usually be one of either

sweet, sour, salty or bitter. Chili is

usually left up to the individual to

add themselves. In this way

Cambodians ensure that they get a

bit of every flavor to satisfy their

palates.

Regional Cambodian cuisine offers some unique dishes influenced by the traditions of local ethnic groups. In

Kampot and Kep, known for its Kampot Pepper Crab or Kdam Chha Mrich Kchei (Khmer: កាា មឆាម្ប្មចខ្ជ ី) in Khmer.

This dish is prepared with a local crab fried with the black pepper from area pepper fields. Kula people, an ethnic

group of Pailin Province, originated Mee Kola (Khmer: មីកុឡា), a vegetarian rice stick noodle dish. In southeastern

Cambodia, the influence of Vietnamese cuisine are strong, evidenced by Bánh tráng which is ubiquitous in

southeastern Cambodia but virtually unknown elsewhere. The region between Siem Reap and Kampong Thom, an

area with many Chinese Cambodians, displays Khmer versions of many Chinese dishes.

Save Poor Children

in Asia

• Department: Soft Skills Training

Cambodia is a great nation that is still recovering from the atrocities of genocide, war, mass starvation and a regime that devastated the country from 1975-1979. Approximately 33 percent of the population is under the age of 15, most of which are impoverished and orphaned. Children roam the streets selling small items in hopes of making enough money to eat and to help support their families. S.C.A.O. is a non-profit, non governmental organization (NGO) in Cambodia that provides home-care, nutritious meals, health-care, education and clothing to orphans and children living in conditions of poverty and social isolation. In a loving, caring environment, 17 children and Mr. Sameth, the director of S.C.A.O., and his wife also live at the Center. Reaching Out Education in Cambodia is limited and expensive. The average monthly wages for a Cambodian worker is about $50 a month while it costs $350-$450 for a year of school. Mr. Sameth believes that education is the key to helping poor children live and share better lifestyles. The Centre provides four free daily English classes Monday through Friday to the children in the Boeng Chhouk village (15 min. north of Phnom Penh). Educating and empowering more children in Cambodia will break the cycle of poverty that has hindered the opportunity for children a better life and a productive future.

By Lucy Tsai, Taiwan

I got too many feelings from this

country. It was really hard to

describe this internship because I

never had the experience to get so

much love at the same time.

However, I felt depressed and

hopeless when I heard about the

government of Cambodia. If I was

just a tourist for traveling, I thought I

won’t know so much about the local

people’s life here. After the

internship, I found that I cherished

everything that I had because in the

past, I seldom cared about what I

owned. I just thought that those

stuffs or love were mine.

Nevertheless, people who are living

in this country need to work very

hard to get what I owned. It gave me

the different concepts about

“getting”.

For the teaching, I tried to search and used different ways

to motivate students. For the high level’s students, they

always could get what I want so I could give them more

different ideas or games during the teaching. But it was

different situations to teach some students who study

English only one or two months. Therefore, I started to slow

down my teaching schedule and changed some processes. I

found one more difficulty is that one of the teaching

assistances sometimes translated the wrong information to

the students so they couldn’t get what I want to told to

them. Also, he always spoke in Khmer when students asked

the questions. Furthermore, few students seldom focused on

the class when I spoke in English and they just wanted to

know about the translation from the teaching assistance. At

the first, I communicated with him but I found the problem

was still there. So we separated into two classes at the end.

I believed that this was a good choice because those

students who really wanted to study English told to me that

they enjoyed the class only speaking and listening in English.

They never only spoke English in the English class. That

result and response were what I wanted. Besides, I also got

the different ideas and teaching styles for the other

teaching assistances. It was a good way that did the

internship to improve my teaching.

For the life experience, I experienced the countryside’s simple life. I love the people there. They are so friendly and

passionate. Also, it was the best experience to live with the Cambodian and I really enjoyed it. I have a family in Cambodia

now. As the first what I said, I got too many feelings and so much love here. I know how to cherish what I have from this

internship. Thanks all of you to help me during those days that I stayed in Cambodia. Although the government is not so good, I

very love people here. Also, I want to stay here and spend my time with all of you again.

Zhang,

Although I have already come back to

Beijing for a week, but it still seems

like a dream, a dream I haven’t woke

up. Dreaming working with my friends,

playing with my students and living in

Cambodia.

People often say “The world is a book,

if you don’t travel you only read one

page”, it definitely true, only when

you are truly in the strange

circumstance, will you find it virtue

and vice.

If I haven’t been to Cambodia, I will

never embrace the splendid Royal

palace, astonished by the famous

Angkor Wat, exciting to see the sunrise

at the Sihanoukville and moved by the

warm hearted residents.

If I haven’t lived in Cambodia for six

weeks, I may not feel the obvious gap

between poor and wealth here,

realized how happy we lived in our

original life and how guilty of our

extravagance in daily life.

If I haven’t worked in Cambodia, I

could not have the opportunity to

access the lovely children and young

people, even the monks. The college

young especially impressed me, for

they via their struggle to build their

brilliant future, and let me to see the

foresight of their country, they can be

better and they deserve better.

“Every person, every story I learned in

even glad to bargain with the vendors on the

street. […] This is the true Cambodia, you can

observe it from multi aspect, not the single

If I haven’t had a strong heart to decide to go to Cambodia, to explore and experience life here, I certainly have no chance to meet my new friends: Daniel, Nancy, Laura, Nick, VK, Eric, Jenny, Mr. Samnang and others guys. You are so amazing, and help me lead a happy life in Phnom Penh.

Every person, every story I learned in Cambodia is so alive, you can hear it, you can see it, and you can touch it. I like we together brainstorming to schedule what to teach for our students. I like sitting on the motor hanging out with my friends. I even glad to bargain with the vendors on the street. And smiling every time when I recall the memory that night we came back from Siem Reap our bus broke twice. This is the true Cambodia, you can observe it from multi aspect, not the single story we have learnt from our medium.

As for my project, most time we living and working there is joyful, but I cannot deny that once we have hesitation, we have compliant, we have difficulties and we ever feel discouraged. However, the most important point is that we adjust ourselves and conquer it. We cannot ask for more for our living condition, because it is already a good one with no charge. We have an excellent headmaster, he tries his best to take care of us and support us. And he is our idol for fighting with life and career.

My friends working in the project

really bring me so much happy, they

are easygoing and interesting. We help

each other and comfort each other.

What’s more, during our cross culture

communication, they let me change a

new angle to treat Taiwan and our

difference.

Time past quickly, with no realization I

have already sit on my flight back to

my country, I still remember I hug

Daniel and say goodbye, just few days

ago I went snorkeling with Nancy and

cooking with Laura.

But, you know my local friends; the

drizzling night you drove us on your

motors riding across the road to the

riverbank has ironed in my head for my

whole life.

AIESEC is an amazing organization, you

cannot imagine its power, vice versa,

you never know their especially

ability, then you can expect how they

change the life there and life of

themselves! Then call us maybe!

Thank you everyone!

Ye,

Mainland

of China

It is embarrassing but I'd like to admit that

Cambodia is not my first choice at that

time. I dreamed a lot about the infinite

blue, amazing and wonderful Aegean Sea.

And fortunately I did pass the interview,

however I was turned down by the time

slot. Then I re-sent my poster and first

letter to other countries, finally I decided

to go to Cambodia. I believe it is just the

fate. It is the destiny that leads me to

Cambodia.

I would never tell you before I went to

Cambodia, I know nothing but the world

renowned Angkor Wat. But interestingly,

after we did visit the well-known Angkor

Wat, we realized it was just as the Tuk Tuk

driver said "It was nothing but stone, stone,

stone" Still regret that we don't hire a guide

to tell us about the stories of Cambodia, the

royalty and the history. So I we just learnt

the things about Cambodia on our own. "The

contemporary real Cambodia.“

We will always remember the first day

we've been to Cambodia. It was truly late

night. And the first time we met Mr.

Samnang, our headmaster. A not tall,

always smile, friendly man. His voice even

sounds very soft actually. He smiled to us

and took us to the school by his little car.

Just felt really sorry for causing such

inconvenience for Mr. Samnang at the time.

Next six weeks, everyday life shows that Mr.

Samnang is really a generous and kind man.

Every time we came back school late we

would call him. If we came across any little

troubles we would ask for his help. And I am

so grateful that he was always patient to us.

Really like a parent to us. Made us feel like

home. By the way, we'd also thank the

keeper of the school very much. For every

time he was woken up by the phone and got

up in the late night to unlock the door for

us.

EP Experience

Sharing Corner

“Never complain about life, be thankful for

what we have got. I really appreciate the days

I was in Cambodia. People asked why you come

here. Now I would answer not to change the

world or Cambodia but to change my life and

then hope others will be touched by what I

have done. And then we will make a

difference to the world together.”

And keeper is only the one of normal

Cambodia people. You can never imagine

how pure how friendly they could be. Across

the street, every time I bought drinks in the

store the strange middle-aged lady would

smile to me. I was sure the smile was from

bottom of heart because it did make me

feel like we are really close, like a distant

relative never seen before. The Tuk Tuk

driver, whom I gave a nickname "shining

eyes", would wave and smile to us every

time we met. The reason we would really

like to buy fruit shake in a certain vendor is

not only because the price is low but also

because she would say hello to us every

time we went to buy and awgung with smile

when we left. Most of times, I am convinced

that Cambodian people live a really happy

and simple life on this tropical land.

But that is not the whole story. After I've

spoken with most stuffs and headmaster, it

will be hardly heard that a university

student will earn his or her own tuition fee

in China, but it is common here. A university

student in the night can also be a Tuk Tuk

driver in the day time. Like the man we met

in the front of the Royal Palace. He told us

he studied from Monday to Friday and

worked from Monday to Sunday. Most of the

teachers in school were university students.

Even Mr Samnang has also got three jobs the

same time. A teacher told me that his

parents were against to his going to

university because it doesn't make a

different. A graduate from university may

still work as a Tuk Tuk driver because they

cannot find jobs. But he just believes

education will change his whole life and

continues study on the money he earned.

Also another teacher expressed his worries

about Cambodia; he said Cambodia was

always controlled by China or USA. When

China or USA provides financial aids to

Cambodia economy, they also asked the

country to follow the rules they make.

I am worried by the status quo in Cambodia but I am

also happy that this land is not polluted by the lust of

material. I still believe Cambodia will be developing

in a positive way. Just because many people are

conscious about the problem also because they are

hard-working.

I suppose the children all over the world should be

similar. They are innocent, noisy, naughty, lazy

sometime and energetic all the time. The first

several days they were very curious about the new

foreign face teachers they've met in class. But days

after days, you would also find they were really

polite and enthusiastic to you. "Hello, Cher!“ “Good

morning, Cher!" Some students were also very shy but

still will say it in a low voice. I did like the short

name of teacher, "Cher"; it is really cute and friendly.

Near the end of teaching I gave them some special

Chinese gifts. I thought only children will be

delighted by those little stuffs.

Finally I would also feel really lucky to know the

AIESECers and colleagues in Cambodia. I'll never

forget the days we ride on motorcycle to the diamond

island and first time in my life I ate a huge ant. After

that I've also tried a leg of huge spider!

I'll remember we four watched the 3D Amazing

Spiderman and Ice Age in a foreign country. I'll

remember the days we spent in Siem Reap in

Sihanoukville. I'll remember it took 8 hours from Siem

Reap to Phnom Penh and we had a big pizza dinner to

make up. I'll remember the unsuccessful but still

interesting sunrise experience. I'll remember the

amazing sunset in the victory beach. I'll remember

the period of life that we lived and shared together.

That is the experience, and life is made up of various

vivid experiences. My life was enlightened so much

just because of you! Never complain about life, be

thankful for what we have got. I really appreciate the

days I was in Cambodia. People asked why you come

here. Now I would answer not to change the world or

Cambodia but to change my life and then hope others

will be touched by what I have
