Building Physics - Heat, Air and Moisture. Fundamentals and Engineering Methods

with Examples and Exercises Hugo S. L. C. Hens

2007. 270 pages, 133 figures, 16 tables.

ISBN: 978-3-433-01841-5 59,- Euro / 80,- US$

- content well structured combining theory with typical building engineering practice - applications for students - author with international appreciation (Scandinavia, Benelux, USA, Canada) About the book Bad experiences with construction quality, the energy crises of 1973 and 1979, complaints about 'sick buildings', thermal, acoustical, visual and olfactory discomfort, the move towards more sustainability, have all accelerated the development of a field, which until 35 years ago was hardly more than an academic exercise: building physics. Through the application of existing physical knowledge and the combination with information coming from other disciplines, the field helps to understand the physical performance of build-ing parts, buildings and the built environment, and translates it into correct design and construc-tion. - The book combines the theory of heat and mass transfer with typical building engineering ap-plications. The line from theory to application is dressed in a correct and clear way. In the theory, oversimplification is avoided. This book is the result of thirty years teaching, research and consultancy activity of the author. -

Failed Bridges Case Studies, Causes and Consequences Joachim Scheer 2010. 307 pages, 170 figures, 20 tables. ISBN: 978-3-433-02951-0 79,- Euro / 110,- US$ About the book When bridges fail, often with loss of human life, those involved may be unwilling to speak openly about the cause. Yet it is possible to learn from mistakes. The lessons gained lead to greater safety and are a source of innovation. This book contains a systematic, unprecedented overview of more than 500 bridge failures as-signed to the time of their occurrence in the bridges' life cycle and to the releasing events. Pri-mary causes are identified. Many of the cases investigated are published here fpr the first time and previous interpretations are shown to be incomplete or incorrect. A catalogue of rules that can help to avoid future mistakes in design analysis, planning and erection is included. A lifetime's work brilliantly compiled and courageously presented - a wealth of knowledge and experience for every structural engineer. The World of Footbridges Klaus Idelberger March 2011 183 pages, 351 figures. ISBN: 978-3-433-02943-5 69,- Euro / 95,- US$ Systematic overview, especially for structural engineers About the book Structural engineers are often more interested in spectacular road and rail bridges with enor-mous spans than in relatively narrow footbridges built for modest loads. Local authorities, on the other hand, see pedestrian and cycle bridges in inner-city or rural locations as vital connec-tions and important features of the town or landscape. Designs are often selected on the basis of architectural competitions. As there are no official guidelines for the planning of footbridges, the building techniques and performance of existing bridges are an important source of infor-mation and inspiration for structural engineers, architects and city or rural planners. This book contains 85 examples of footbridges built worldwide over the past three decades and includes open pedestrian and cycle bridges, utility bridges and skywalks in many different envi-ronments. The collection is arranged according to load bearing system and span length. There is a brief description of the location and structural system of each bridge illustrated by photo-graphs, plans, elevations and in some cases construction details. It is a treasure trove for bridge builders.

Cable-Stayed Bridges

Holger Svensson

will be published in May 2012 2012. approx. 450 pages, approx. 800 figures in colour. Hardcover

ISBN: 978-3-433-02992-3 approx. 129,- Euro / approx. 190,- Euro

About the book Around the world large-scale bridges are needed and being built for infrastructure projects, since the 1970s many of them are cable-stayed bridges. This book describes the fundamentals of all phases of design, detailed design and actual erec-tion and uses 250 built examples to illustrate various aspects. The chapters on cables and erection are a main focus of this work as they represent the most important difference to other types of bridges. The bridge examples were chosen according to the following criteria: bridges in which the au-thor was personally involved or where the engineering office of Leonhardt, Andrä und Partner (LAP) had significant involvement as well as those bridges with special constructive features or record span lengths. The most important design engineers are also presented.

Integral and Semi-Integral Bridges Martin P. Burke Jr.

2009. 272 pages.

Hardcover ISBN: 978-1-4051-9418-1

Wiley Blackwell 99,- Euro / 149,99 US$

About the book Worldwide, integral type bridges are being used in greater numbers in lieu of jointed bridges because of their structural simplicity, economy, and durability. Written by a practicing bridge design engineer from the USA who has spent his career involved in the origination, evaluation and design of such bridges, this book shows how the analytical complexity due to the elimina-tion of movable joints can be minimized to negligible levels so that most moderate length bridg-es can be easily and quickly modified or replaced with either integral or semi-integral bridges. Design of Steel Structures Eurocode 3: Design of steel structures. Part 1-1: General rules and rules for buildings. ECCS - European Convention for Constructional Steelwork (ed.) 2010. 446 pages, 295 figures, 105 tables. ISBN: 978-3-433-02973-3 70,- Euro / 95,- US$ About the book This book introduces the fundamental design concept of Eurocode 3 for current steel structures in building construction, and their practical application. Following a discussion of the basis of design, including the principles of reliability management and the limit state approach, the ma-terial standards and their use are detailed. The fundamentals of structural analysis and modeling are presented, followed by the design criteria and approaches for various types of structural members. The theoretical basis and checking procedures are closely tied to the Eurocode re-quirements. The following chapters expand on the principles and applications of elastic and plastic design, each exemplified by the step-by-step design calculation of a braced steel-framed building and an industrial building, respectively. Besides providing the necessary theoretical con-cepts for a good understanding, this manual intends to be a supporting tool for the use of prac-ticing engineers. In order of this purpose, throughout the book, numerous worked examples are provided, concerning the analysis of steel structures and the design of elements under several types of actions. These examples will facilitate the acceptance of the code and provide for a smooth transition from earlier national codes to the Eurocode. Design of Plated Structures. EC 3: Design of Steel Structures. Part 1-5: Design of Plated Structures. ECCS (ed.) 2011 272 pages, 139 figures. Softcover. ISBN: 978-3-433-02980-0 55,- Euro / 75,- US$ About the book The main aim of this book is to provide practical advice to designers of plated structures for cor-rect and efficient application of EN 1993-1-5 design rules. In chapter 1 the purpose, the scope and the structure of the book is explained. In chapter 2 a rather detailed and commented over-view of EN 1993-1-5 design rules is given following the structure of the standard. Shear lag ef-fect as well as plate buckling problems due to direct stresses, shear forces, transverse forces and interactions of these effects are covered. This chapter also includes a reduced stress method and a finite element analysis approach to plate buckling problems. A large number of design exam-ples illustrate the proper application of individual design rules. Chapter 3 and 4 bring two com-plete design examples on a crane runway and a box-girder bridge.

Fire Design of Steel Structures EC 1: Actions on Structures. Part 1-2: Actions exposed to fire.

EC 3: Design of steel structures. Part 1-2: Structural fire design ECCS (ed.)

2010. 428 pages, 134 figures, 21 tables.

ISBN: 978-3-433-02974-9 70,- Euro / 95,- US$

About the book This book explains and illustrates the rules that are given in the Eurocode for designing steel structures subjected to fire. After the first introductory chapter, Chapter 2 explains how to calcu-late the mechanical actions (loads) in the fire situation based on the information given in EN 1990 and EN 1991. Chapter 3 presents the models to be used to represent the thermal action created by the fire. Chapter 4 describes the procedures to be used to calculate the temperature of the steelwork from the temperature of the compartment and Chapter 5 shows how the information given in EN 1993-1-2 is used to determine the loan bearing capacity of the steel structure. The methods use to evaluate the fire resistance of bolted and welded connections are described in Chapter 7. Chapter 8 describes a computer program called "Elefir-EN" which is based on the simple calcu-lation model given in the Eurocode and allows designers to quickly and accurately calculate the performance of steel components in the fire situation. Chapter 9 looks at the issues that a de-signer may be faced with when assessing the fire resistance of a complete building. This is done via a case study and addresses most of the concepts presented in the earlier Chapters. The concepts and fire engineering procedures given in the Eurocodes may see complex those more familiar with the prescriptive approach. This publication sets out the design process in a logical manner giving practical and helpful advice and easy to follow worked examples that will allow designer to exploit the benefits of this new approach to fire design.

Tensile Surface Structures. A Practical Guide to Cable and Membrane Construction.

Materials, Design, Assembly and Erection Michael Seidel

2009. 2400 pages, 368 figures.

ISBN 978-3-433-02922-0 99,- Euro / 135,- US$

Special multi-disciplinary knowledge with practical orientation This book is the first synopsis of the specialized and multi-disciplinary knowledge from structural engineers and architects, from manufacturers and material producers as well as from steelwork and cable assembly companies. It enables planners to go the optimized way in their projects. About the book Tensile surface structures are the visual expression of an intensive examination of the topic of building envelopes in architecture. Advances in design methods, materials, construction ele-ments and assembly and erection planning within the field of lightweight building construction are enabling ever more exacting applications of tensile structures with spatial and structural functions, especially in roofing large column-free areas. - The mechanical characteristics of the materials used raise the question of "buildability". This book provides answers by discussing the fundamental influence of material manufacture and assembly in deciding the most suitable type of building or structure and its detailing. -

The History of the Theory of Structures. From Arch Analysis to Computational Mechanics Karl-Eugen Kurrer 2008. 848 pages, 500 figures. ISBN 978-3-433-01838-5 119,- Euro / 165,- US$ This book really is a gift to all civil engineers Find out what you always wished to know about structural analysis - English edition of the successful German edition of 2002, updated and enlarged About the book This major work is about much more than the origins of statics and its use in building and bridge engineering since the late sixteenth century. It is also about the very ideas of "statics" and "strength of materials" and how they came to be an integral part of the engineer's life; how they were developed into an academic discipline; how they became the subject of growing numbers of technical books and periodicals; and, ultimately, how the epistemology of the sub-ject developed. Drawing on a long series of specialized articles and more than two decades of study, the author begins each chapter with a personal reflection on his involvement with the subject under discus-sion. He demonstrates how engineering thought, far from being abstractly objective, is imbued with the character of its thinkers, their teachers, and their pupils. Kurrer also includes short biog-raphies of over one hundred engineers who made major contributions to advances in structural theory and practice, most of which are illustrated by portraits, and the whole is backed by an extensive bibliography. Author Biography Dr.-Ing. Karl-Eugen Kurrer is Editor-in-Chief of the journal Stahlbau (steel construction), Berlin, since 1996. For more then 25 years Kurrer is working on the history of the theory of structures and structural analysis in the scientific and technological historical context. His numerous articles and presentations as well as his activities for the German Association of Engineers (VDI) met good response and motivated this book. - This major work is about more than the origins and use of statics, it is also about the very ideas of "statics" and "strength of materials and how they came to be a part of the engineer´s life. Fully referenced, with short biographies of over 180 important engineers. - This book has over 40 reviews from known authors and engineers - mostly positive.
