Books for Asia Vietnam The Asia Foundation’s Books for Asia program has operated in Vietnam since 1993 through a partnership with the National Library in Hanoi. The program provides high-quality educational materials to help improve the scientific knowledge of Vietnamese citizens, and to promote the devel- opment of various educational fields in Vietnam. Since 2005, the Foundation has worked with the National Library and other local partners to organize a number of innovative events highlight- ing the joy of reading and the invaluable role that public libraries play in bringing information to people from all walks of life. We have worked with librarians all over the country to produce book exhibitions, reading festivals, children’s art contests, writing contests, and internet festivals. The Foundation has also provided a series of trainings for public library staff on service provi- sion and connecting with their communities. Our books help school and university students in Vietnam: n Expand their imaginations, critical thinking skills, and understanding of the world. n Enhance their English-language capacity enabling them to access global information. n Advance their professional knowledge in crit- ical areas including education, medicine, law, engineering, and public administration. Globally, Books for Asia puts nearly one million brand-new books into the hands of students, educators, and local and national leaders in 18 countries annually. The Asia Foundation has been supporting Vietnam’s ongoing transformation since 1993 through a network of committed partners in govern- ment, the private sector, and civil society, and a resident office in Hanoi since 2000. Vietnam's extraordinary literacy rate (over 90 percent) exemplifies a culture with a high regard for edu- cation. Vietnam's rapid economic growth and greater global integration in the past two decades have sparked strong public demand for English-language training, more dynamic teaching methodologies, and the latest scientific knowledge. More effective education and training is a top priority if Vietnam is to sustain its remarkable economic growth and social transformation. VIETNAM Books for Asia supports education at all levels in Vietnam by providing books, software, and other educational materials. The program has distributed over 400,000 volumes of English-language educational materials, with a total value of $15 million, to more than 120 institutions in 35 provinces and cities throughout Vietnam, including: n Over 20,000 students and teachers in 66 recipient universities. Business and economics texts donated by Books for Asia make up more than 75 percent of the library collection at the Hanoi National University School of Business. n Tens of thousands of Vietnamese people through 32 provincial public libraries. n Over 8,000 government officials in 23 governmental institutions.
