and explicitly provide the rationale for actions or public policies designed to alleviate noxious environmental influences.

The orientation of the volume strongly re- flects-as it should-the biases of the editors. While the uniting of a psychologist and a geog- rapher to produce this volume is not as sur- prising as it would have been a decade ago, it is still nevertheless rare. As researchers, both have been actively involved at various times and in different capacities with the University of Chicago, Clark University, and University of Toronto "floodplain" and "natural hazards" studies, that have had a strong psychological emphasis and public policy and action orienta- tion.

Some criticisms can be levied that are related to the book's perhaps too ambitious goals. Be- cause of the small number of papers included, inevitably one and sometimes two papers must by itself depict a major theoretical perspective. Whether, for example, one paper alone can adequately demonstrate the historical or cultural perspective in explaining man's response to his environment can be questioned. It can also be asked whether the most appropriate paper has always been selected. The Lynn White paper in this volume, for example, could profitably be replaced by a Clarence J. Glacken contribu- tion. This general problem might have been alleviated at the cost of eliminating Part II of the book in which the papers constitute a less cohesive whole, and by doubling the number of contributions in Part I. A stronger volume may have resulted since there have been few attempts to provide a comprehensive overview of multidisciplinary perspectives underlying man's environmental appraisal and coping pro- cesses.

Criticisms aside, this inexpensive volume will make an excellent supplementary reading source in introductory courses in geography and in social sciences. With the editors the re- viewer hopes that ". . . the student who reads this book is someone who cares about the quality of the relationship between man and his physical environment."
